Thin film transistors with different polymers (PTFTs) as active channel layers have been fabricated and studied in this work. Three different fabrication procedures were used to fabricate long and short channel PTFTs on silicon substrates and long channel PTFTs on glass substrates. It has been shown that the success rate of fabrication of PTFTs on glass substrates with anodic Al 2O3 gate dielectrics is higher than that on silicon substrates with thermally grown SiO2 gate dielectrics.<br>The characteristics of PTFTs fabricated using several polymers were studied. A chemical bath deposition technique has been used in the fabrication of thin film transistors (TFT), which have been deposited on a 200mum polymer substrate. This thesis documents the chemistry and microfabrication techniques used to create the TFTs. Because TFTs have not been fabricated on plastics in this manner before, insights gained from understanding the mechanical properties of the polymer, and how these interact with those of the inorganic components of the TFTs, were used to guide development of processes specifically suited to adapt the polymer to TFT fabrication.

Charge transport in semiconductor channels of organic field-effect transistors (FETs) depends largely on the molecular ordering of organic semiconductor molecules. This is particularly demanding for polymer-based FETs, where channel semiconductors are non-molecular in nature, and generally form semiconductor films of low crystallinity. As a result, great theoretical and practical interests have been directed towards facile solution processes that can transform a low molecular weight (MW) and low mobility conjugated polymer into a high crystalline order and high-mobility semiconductor.
