Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major public health problem yet it remains the third most common and the second deadliest cancer for both men and women in the United States and in Europe, owing to diagnosis at advanced stage and variable response to the treatments. However, the incidence and mortality appear to be steadily declining in countries with programmatic screening and it remains critical to characterize CRC molecular subtypes to identify new biomarkers. CRC display a wide clinicopathological and molecular heterogeneity and arise from different carcinogenesis pathway. Approximately 20% to 30% of CRC occur by the means of the serrated neoplasia pathway. CRC from the serrated pathway are associated with frequent epigenetic instability (CIMP, CpG island methylator phenotype) which causes most sporadic microsatellite instability (MSI) CRC through epigenetic inactivation of MLH1 and frequent BRAF mutation. CRC from the serrated pathway frequently display a mucinous pattern and are prone to express secreted mucins MUC2 and MUC5AC. Early identification of serrated pathway precursor lesions is currently challenging since the progression to adenocarcinoma in this pathway is particularly brief. We assessed in this study clinicopathological and molecular features of colorectal carcinomas and polyps and we analyzed the interest of mucin genes MUC2 and MUC5AC to classify serrated polyps and to identify the precursor lesions of CIMP/MSI carcinomas._x000D_A series of 418 CRC and 330 polyps was included in the study, with 218 serrated polyps and 112 conventional adenomas. We assessed the molecular profile (KRAS/BRAF mutations, MSI, CIMP, MGMT methylation, MLH1) and the expression and methylation profile of MUC2 and MUC5AC genes and further correlation with clinical and pathological data were performed. We show that MUC5AC hypomethylation is a specific marker of CIMP/MSI CRC, independently of other clinical or pathological factors. We show moreover than MUC5AC hypomethylation is an early event of carcinogenesis, specific to microvesicular hyperplastic polyps (MVHP) and sessile serrated adenoma (SSA) suggesting a filiation between these two lesions and also a progression of MVHP to SSA, SSA with dysplasia, and then to MSI/CIMP CRC. MUC5AC hypomethylation was moreover highly specific of BRAF mutated, CIMP or MSI serrated lesions. In conclusion, our results suggest that the MUC5AC mucin is involved/plays a role in the development/progression of colorectal tumors of the serrated pathway. MUC5AC hypomethylation occurs early during carcinogenesis and may be of interest for the diagnosis of serrated polyp especially in the presence of ambiguous morphology and to early detection of polyps carrying a malignant potential. Our results suggest moreover that some MVHP may progress to SSA and CIMP/MSI CRCs highlighting the importance to perform biopsy of serrated polyps during endoscopy to identify microvesicular subtype among colorectal hyperplastic polyps, which could require a minimal surveillance

Abstract:
AbstractCoating processes are emerging for new applications related to remanufactured products from End-of-Life materials. In this perspective, their employment can generate interesting scenarios for the design of products and solutions in circular economy frameworks, especially for composite materials. This chapter would give an overview of coating design and application for recycled glass fiber reinforced polymers on the base of the experimentation made within the FiberEUse project. New cosmetic and functional coatings were developed and tested on different polymer composite substrates filled with mechanically recycled End-of-Life glass fibers. Afterwards, recycled glass fiber reinforced polymer samples from water-solvable 3D printed molds were successfully coated. Finally, new industrial applications for the developed coatings and general guidelines for the coating of recycled glass fiber reinforced polymers were proposed by using the FiberEUse Demo Cases as a theoretical proof-of-concept.

Abstract:
AbstractBiobased polymers are of great interest due to the release of tension on non-renewable petroleum-based polymers for environmental concerns. However, biobased polymers usually have poor mechanical and barrier properties when used as the main component of coatings and films, but they can be improved by adding nanoscale reinforcing agents (nanoparticles - NPs or fillers), thus forming nanocomposites. The nano-sized components have a larger surface area that favors the filler-matrix interactions and the resulting material yield. For example, natural fibers from renewable plants could be used to improve the mechanical strength of the biobased composites. In addition to the mechanical properties, the optical, thermal and barrier properties are mainly effective on the selection of type or the ratio of biobased components. Biobased nanocomposites are one of the best alternatives to conventional polymer composites due to their low density, transparency, better surface properties and biodegradability, even with low filler contents. In addition, these biomaterials are also incorporated into composite films as nano-sized bio-fillers for the reinforcement or as carriers of some bioactive compounds. Therefore, nanostructures may provide antimicrobial properties, oxygen scavenging ability, enzyme immobilization or act as a temperature or oxygen sensor. The promising result of biobased functional polymer nanocomposites is shelf life extension of foods, and continuous improvements will face the future challenges. This chapter will focus on biobased materials used in nanocomposite polymers with their functional properties for food packaging applications.

Abstract:
Polymer flooding is one of the most promising EOR methods (Smalley et al. 2018). It is well known and has been used successfully (Pye 1964; Standnes & Skjevrak 2014; Sheng et al. 2015). From a technical perspective we recommend that polymer flooding should be considered as a viable EOR method on the Norwegian Continental Shelf for the following reasons: 1. More oil can be produced with less water injected; this is particularly important for the NCS which are currently producing more water than oil 2. Polymers will increase the aerial sweep and improve the ultimate recovery, provided a proper injection strategy 3. Many polymer systems are available, and it should be possible to tailor their chemical composition to a wide range of reservoir conditions (temperature and salinity) 4. Polymer systems can be used to block water from short circuiting injection production wells 5. Polymer combined with low salinity injection water has many benefits: a lower polymer concentration can be used to reach target viscosity, less mechanical degradation, less adsorption, and a potential reduction in Sor due to a low salinity wettability effect. There are some hurdles when considering polymer flooding that needs to be considered: 1. Many polymer systems are not at the present considered as green chemicals; thus, reinjection of produced water is needed. However, results from polymer degradation studies in the IORCentre indicates that a. High molecular weight polymers are quickly degraded to low molecular weight. In case of accidental release to the ocean low molecular weight polymers are diluted and the lifetime of the spill might be quite short. According to Caulfield et al. (2002) HPAM is not toxic, and will not degrade to the more environmentally problematic acrylamide. b. In the DF report for environmental impact there are case studies using the DREAM model to predict the transport of chemical spills. This model is coupled with polymer (sun exposure) degradation data from the IORCentre to quantify the lifetime of polymer spills. This approach should be used for specific field cases to quantify the environmental risk factor. 2. Care must be taken to prepare the polymer solution offshore. Chokes and vales might be a challenge but can be mitigating according to the results from the large-scale testing done in the IORCentre (Stavland et al. 2021). None of the above-mentioned challenges are server enough to not consider polymer flooding. HPAM is neither toxic, nor bio-accumulable, or bio-persistent and the CO2 footprint from a polymer flood may be significantly less than a water flood (Dupuis et al. 2021). There are at least two contributing factors to this statement, which we will return in detail to in the next section i) during linear displacement polymer injection will produce more oil for the same amount of water injected, hence the lifetime of the field can be shortened ii) polymers increase the arial sweep reducing the need for wells.

Abstract:
Injecting a polymer solution into a porous medium significantly increases the modeling complexity, compared to model a polymer bulk solution. Even if the polymer solution is injected at a constant rate into the porous medium, the polymers experience different flow regimes in each pore and pore throat. The main challenge is to assign a macroscopic porous media “viscosity” to the fluid which can be used in Darcy law to get the correct relationship between the injection rate and pressure drop. One can achieve this by simply tabulating experimental results (e.g., injection rate vs pressure drop). The challenge with the tabulated approach is that it requires a huge experimental database to tabulate all kind of possible situations that might occur in a reservoir (e.g., changing temperature, salinity, flooding history, permeability, porosity, wettability etc.). The approach presented in this report is to model the mechanisms and describe them in terms of mathematical models. The mathematical model contains a limited number of parameters that needs to be determined experimentally. Once these parameters are determined, there is in principle no need to perform additional experiments.

Abstract:
As the State of California continues to grow, demand for enhanced infrastructure such as roadways and highways escalates. In view of the current average highway lifespan of 15–20 years, the improvement of asphalt binders leads to material sustainability by decreasing required maintenance and increasing the lifespan of roadways. In the present investigation, enhancement of asphalt binder properties was achieved by different methods of mixing varying compositions of graphene nanoparticles with an SBS polymer and asphalt binder. Additionally, experimental evaluation and comparison of the rheological and mechanical properties of each specimen is presented. Graphene nanoparticles have attracted great curiosity in the field of highway materials due to their incredible rigidity, even in small quantities. Addition of as little as 1.0%nanoparticles in combination with polymers in an asphalt binder is expected to increase the rigidity of the material while also maintaining the beneficial polymer characteristics. Evaluation of the effect of the mixing design established that the methods for application of graphene to the polymer-modified asphalt binder are critical in the improvement of a roadway, resulting in resistance to premature aging and strain from constant road operation.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the United States Multi-Society Task Force recommends the use of old snare polypectomy (CSP) for < 10 mm polyps. However, recent randomized clinical trials (RCTs) showed some conflicting results in cold forceps technique including cold forceps polypectomy (CFP) and jumbo forceps polypectomy (JFP) compared with CSP in diminutive colorectal polyps (DCPs) (≤5mm), especially in 1-3mm polyps. Condition being studied: Current studies have some conflicting results in the cold forceps technique vs cold snare technique for diminutive colorectal polyps (≤5mm). This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the cold forceps technique with the cold snare technique in 1-5mm polyps. We evaluated these two techniques in terms of complete resection rate, mean polypectomy time, rate of retrieved polyps, and complication.
