The effect of lithium polysulphides on the cyclic deposition/and dissolution of lithium metal on an inert stainless steel electrode and on a lithium metal electrode in sulfolane solutions has been studied. It has been shown that the addition of lithium polysulphides to sulfolane solutions leads to a significant increase in the cycle life (2 or more times) and cycling efficiency of a lithium metal electrode and a lithium metal on inert stainless steel electrode. It also results in the reduction of the corrosion rate of the lithium cathodic deposits. The positive influence of lithium polysulphid

Abstract Collecting of concentrated cyanide solutions in electroplating shops is quite a common occurrence. These accumulations of 4.5 to 9.0 cu m volume, which may be collected over a period of years, are usually in the concentration range of 1 to 3 per cent cyanide and present considerable dangers as they are stored on-site or transported for treatment or disposal. Common technologies available for the treatment of cyanide-containing wastewaters are generally not applicable to concentrated cyanide solutions, and some special technologies which could be applicable, usually show high capital c

The diffu~ion and permeation of aviation fuel (Avtur) and water in commercial and 'model' polysulphide sealants have been studied using simple gravimetric techniques. For Avtur, the mass uptake behaviour is explicable in terms of normal, Fickian diffusion, and the diffusion coefficient determined has been found to be independent of the experimental method and concentration of the liquid. Water, however, exhibits anomalous diffusion behaviour. Mass uptake by the polysulphides is high and equilibrium is not reached after several months. There is no correlation between the results of permeation,

Chromium contamination of groundwater and soils continues to pose a major environmental concern. Soils may have become contaminated with chromium through former industrial activities geochemical enrichment. The nature of the industrial activity will determine the form and concentration of the chromium as well as the presence of co-contaminants and the pH and redox of the soil. Chemical reductants have been widely used for the transformation of hexavalent chromium in the environment. Over recent decades attention focused on the chemical reductant calcium polysulphide which has performed effecti

Increasing the yield of kraft pulping processes is desirable for both environmental and economic reasons. The addition of polysulphide to the cooking liquor is a solution, which has been shown to increase pulp yield by 1 % or more. One economical approach used to generate polysulphide is the PAPRILOX™ process. In this process, sulphide in white liquor is oxidized to polysulphide in a sparged stirred tank reactor using lime mud and MNO2 catalysts. This thesis investigates the mixing-sensitivity of polysulphide generation in the PAPRILOX™ process, with the goal of determining the optimum

Abstract Fibre shortages and a move towards closed cycle operation have resulted in a renewed interest in polysulphide kraft pulping. Recently, a process has been developed whereby polysulphide is formed directly in the kraft mills causticizers by the addition of air or oxygen. The purpose of this work was to identify materials of construction for polysulphide enriched kraft liquors and to characterize the effect of polysulphide on existing carbon steel equipment. Although the majority of lines nave no history of internal corrosion failures, some lines have suffered serious corrosion. In these latter lines, corrosion has been predominantly caused by one of four corrosion mechanisms: 1) corrosion in the presence of high chloride formation water; 2) corrosion in the presence of sulphur/polysulphides; 3) corrosion in the presence of methanol; and 4) corrosion in the presence of low H2S/CO2 ratios.
