Full textFrench people live a real " love story " with their fire-fighters. But what grounds this " love " that perdures for more than a century, on what is this " bright picture " based ? This is the simple question we tried to answer with the assets of a pragmatic sociology. Fire-fighters do not show a single face, but a composite picture of many " faces ". They are percieved as " risk technicians ", as " fire soldiers " and as " St Barbara fire-fighters ". We formulate the hypothesis that the " love ", this " bright picture " rely on the ability of fire-fighters to create, control and give form to the emotions experimented by " mundanes " (people foreign to the corporation) during an intervention or a public manifestation. If the " point of view " (onlloking and judgement) of the " mundanes " have evolved during the two last centuries, with the rise of these faces, fire-fighters were able to invent new means of " bonding " (affective and materialised bonds) who link them with the " mundanes "

Full textThis research examines how to explain and increase organizational commitment of Volunteer Firefighters (VF) of French Fire Departments (FD). In the first part, we intend to fill a gap of organizational knowledge on French Fire Departments. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we demonstrate FD can be considered, in a certain extent, as a Mintzberg’s professional bureaucracy, involving complex relationship between Career Firefighters and VF. In the second part, we question the commonly accepted idea of “volunteer crisis”. An exploratory study partly undermines such statement but show some concerns for sustainability of such a model. For this reason, FD needs to increase effort and to find new ways to attract and retain VF. Research data is made up of a qualitative study (47 semi-directive interviews). A quantitative study (173 questionnaires, return rate 52%) were held to broaden findings of the qualitative study. In the third part, findings are presented and discussed along with their practical implications. Findings are divided in two parts: environmental factors and organizational factors of VF commitment. Environmental factors have a strong influence on decision to apply and to last for a long time in FD. Managing environmental factors can turn out to be productive but has to be done by circuitous ways. Amongst organizational factors of VF commitment, operational activities come to first rank. VF commitment seems to be negatively correlated with brigade’ size and more precisely seems depend on the presence or not of Career Firefighters in brigade. Finally, in order to present profile and assess brigades’ attractiveness for VF, a 4-dimension model is developped

Full textDaily tasks of firefighters may induce significant musculoskeletal constraints, cardiovascular risks, burnout and injuries. The aim of this doctoral work was to characterize the specific injuries of French firefighters, and to analyze influence of physical activity (PA), burnout, coping strategies, personality traits, and achievement goal in this injury occurrence. We hypothesize that injuries of French firefighters would be explained by both psychological and physiological factors. Through four experimental studies, the main results indicate that ankle sprain is the major injury in this population. Although SP missions are dangerous and varied, paradoxically injuries occur during the hours of PA practice in day guard. In addition, the total number of hours AP practiced per week is associated with injury. We also observed that the performances achieved in the Y-balance test, the "weight bearing lunge test" are predictive of ankle sprains. Although our investigations have highlighted that the injury was caused by psychological (e.g., burnout) and physiological factors, practicing sessions of AP is compulsory and required in this job, and paradoxically remains the largest provider of occupational incident

Full textThis social historical research brings a better view of the constitution of French firemen and their knowledge of the job since the beginning of the 19th century. The concept of understanding how this group is structured, how they were considered the rites of consecration and was built the social representation of this specialised body, today it is seen as having athletic qualities (on the sport field) and heroic. From a prior work of a social image rupture, the analysis anchors on the constitution and the training of personal care, consecration rites and devices for the practice, elaborated by this corporation during the 1818-1966 period. The main hypothesis is that the main challenge for each group have to impose or to preserve the legitimate concept of a good fireman and also his perfect way to organize himself. The professional world is then configured (and reconfigure through time) from symbolic internal conflicts but also with cooperations bringing diversed capitals. One of these capitals especially asked and different from the others-is the sport corporal capital. It is the main challenge for professional culture which is made and then later shown amongst the institutions of socialisation. By treating many cultural aspects and the organisation of the firemen, the study emphasizes the needs for the training of sports programmes, ranking and the men selection, categorise through strongly diversified bodies. The analysis has proved the technical evolutions and has followed the reorganization, its complexity, cleavages, the conflicts which animate and bring evolutions

Full textThis work deals with the institutionalisation of fire-fighters in France between the beginnings of the Third Republic and the present day. It looks again at the myths which surround fire services :- the so-called " fire soldier " or regular fireman and the " volunteer " fireman. The image of the " fire soldier " came into being at the end of the 19th century in fact whereas until that time main role was the maintaining of public order. This metamorphosis was the result of a long process during which a group of players strived in this direction, linked by a common interest in disarming the fire-fighters and taking away from them some of their military attributes. This work was first of all fruit of the national federation of fire-fighters made up of dignitaries who embraced the republican ideals and were satisfied to see their businesses protected against the fire risk. This body found an ally in the State. The public authorities were trying to impose an institutinal system and were statisfied to see the disarming of the fire-fighters, a potential danger in the hands of the town councillors. They did not fail to take advantage of this situation in order to set up, with the backing of the federation, a single fire-fighter status and assert its pre-eminence aver the organisation of fire services. On account of the social and political role of the fire-fighters at the local level, the members of Parliament took up their cause within the parliamentary arena. The internalisation of the new role assigned to the fire-fighters was awquired through the setting in place of competitions for fire-fighting exercises and fire-engines by the federation. The politicians, the press and the manufacturers of fire-fighting equipment took the opportunity to redefine the image of the fire-fighter. Without presenting a single front, the various players in the fire insurance field helped to stenghten this phenomenon. The mutual insurance system for instance authorised the federation to reward the fire-fighters for giving up their arms – the former incentive to recruitment. The singel status set in place by the State and the federation was challenged by the local authorities, in particular the largest among them, on political and social grounds. Architects and other officers employed by them produced a professional status which was in opposition to the republican model. After the second world war, these two models continued to be in opposition to one another, but the increase in the number of interventions and their diversification and technical nature, such as the changes made to the territorial organisational framework of the fire services, contributed to the decline in the volunteer services. The image of the volunteer fireman only continued to exist thanks to a retranslation of the policy and the symbolic work performed by the federation

Full textFirefighter's workload fluctuates between extreme states. On the one hand, firefighters must respond to a wide range of emergencies requiring intense and sustained physical and psychological efforts. On the other hand, they may find themselves in situations of prolonged waiting between occurrences of these critical events, and thus be exposed to heavy workplace boredom. Their daily life is characterized by constant unpredictability, which has been little studied in favor of more attractive subjects such as exposure to post-traumatic stress disorder. However, this emergency and waiting overlay suggests complex and dynamic organizational dynamics, particularly in relation to the many fluctuations in their daily workload. No studies have been carried as of yet to explicitly understand the variation factors of firefighter’s workloads as well as the strategies they implement to maintain a balanced workload. This thesis aims to document the workload of Quebec firefighters in a way that faithfully reflects its dynamic and fluctuating nature, unlike the static measurement common on this topic. This study is necessary and fills several theoretical, empirical and methodological gaps in the literature on occupational health and emergency trades. Through its ethnographic approach, this study provides an in-depth understanding of the active roles of workers and their organizations in managing workload. Firefighters’ work has so far been studied with quantitative approaches that limit our understanding of the dynamic and complex aspects of workload. To fill this gap, the first article of this thesis proposes a dynamic model of workload understanding. This model was developed by grouping together two research areas generally considered epistemologically incompatible. Anchored by a pragmatic posture, this model proposes a junction between the job crafting and the ergonomic concepts and methods associated with the activity analysis. It also highlights the need for qualitative or mixed methodologies to adequately illustrate the different interactions between the dimensions of the model and to represent the actions of individuals according to their significance for them and their impact on workload perception. The empirical articles of this thesis are based on a qualitative ethnographic study conducted in two fire departments of Quebec. Participant observation consisted of 342 hours of observation of firefighters’ work, including day and night shifts. Data collection was distributed between five barracks divided between the two municipalities. The observation periods have documented the reality of the firefighters involved in peripheral and central barracks during the four seasons of the year. 28 permanent and 15 temporary firefighters were observed, and out of these, 17 individual interviews were conducted. The first empirical article focuses on boredom at work perceived by firefighters during waiting periods between emergency interventions. It aims to answer the following questions: How is boredom manifested in fire stations, and what factors influence its perception by firefighters? Results show that an organizational context where low demands are systematically expected is perceived as more tiring than firefighting activities. The study highlights that being chronically bored leads to a vicious circle in which individuals become less and less able to manage time spent on non-urgent activities. Whereas other studies have mainly focused on firefighters’ reactions in emergency situations, this research sheds light on their reactions to boredom and offers tangible managerial courses of action. The second empirical paper deals with firefighters’ dynamic workload fluctuations. It aims to document factors influencing firefighters’ workload and to document the strategies that allow firefighters to manage to the best of their abilities the unpredictability of these characteristic fluctuations of their daily lives. The results illustrate how changes in the environment, demands, and individual and organizational resources cause variations in workload perceptions. In contrast to current literature, not only variations in demands would result in variations in perceptions of workload. The results also highlight the active role of the individual in managing his workload and how the implementation of job crafting strategies balances their perceived workload. This study demonstrates the importance of taking an interest in the firefighting profession beyond emergencies. It states that their workload is not a simple phenomenon that is limited to the amount of demands they are required of them. On the contrary, firefighters’ workloads fluctuate due to multiple environmental, organizational and individual factors. Above all, firefighters are not passive targets of variations in their environment: by implementing job crafting strategies, they are empowered in actively building their own workload.

Full textMost Fire and Rescue services and Medical Emergency services are organised along the lines of one of two schools originating in the United Kingdom and in Germany. In order to present these schools we first decided to analyse the history of the regulations they operate under, by writing them in the form of a generic equation: f(Risks, Operational Resources, Time to attend). Fundamental differences regarding officer status, allocation, operational resources quality and quantity, recording of planned vs. Actual performance indicators, etc. Became apparent. We then solved the proposed equation for Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and France. Finally, we demonstrated the cost-efficiency of Fire and Rescue services and Medical Emergency services when considered in association with the economic structures they have to protect

Full textThe Atlantic-Pyrenean volunteer firemen represent 75 % of the operational active intervention force. The French national fire brigade of public sector essentially lies on the everyday commitment of women and men involved in civil security missions on the French national territory. Being engaged as a volonteer fireman demands to be able to both lead a double life and assume a double identity. It demands to serve the general interest being linked, in the same time and in parallel, to an employer in the public or private sector. Our research-work mainly aims to reveal that a total or subdivided skills transfer, can be implemented, combining the two active spheres, the volunteering and professional ones. Before developping the main ideas, our research paper starts by making an overview on the definition of “Volunteering” compared to “Voluntary work”, to carry on by focusing on the commitment features : What are the common values connecting the two spheres ? How can they meet and be combined ? How can they exist ? What are the hidden characteristics of such self sacrifice? In order to light our research, we have depicted the volunteers firement history to catch how the voluntary engagement appeared, has been built and is still so strongly rooted in the French civil security. To overhaul our hypothesis, we have drawn our own, skill model based on common points identified in the two professional spheres, taking into consideration the employers and the volunteers perceiving, demands and expectations. To complete our analysis and to adhere to our professional experience and needs, we have studied how stronger social relations and partnerships between, particularly, public sector and companies, can be developped through continuing training, corporate sponsorship and voluntary engagement integration in the employers company social responsability. All this has converged to show that the voluntary engagement system remains to be brittle : major limits have been detected because of accrued operational sollicitations for fewer volunteers

Full textEmergency department professional, passer-by, parent represent three main characters of emergencies and first aid situations, from the call to the Fire Brigade to the arriving in pediatric emergency services. The research is grounded in three fieldworks (Paris fire Brigade call centre and two big pediatric emergency services). It intends to unfold three types of participation through the activities done by those three characters, especially during interactions at the very beginning of the situation. Their coordination, articulation, and even contiguity reveal their activities toward patients and show a triadic structure of the “first aid interactions” through which patients enter helping and medical processes. From alert to action, cure to care, medical acts to following care, the emergency situation enlarges, implies more people than just a patient and a professional all of them only partly conscious of each other‘s activities, other places than just emergency services, and other tempos than the one of the professionals. We aim at showing that first aid interaction is neither dyadic nor just institution matter. It is built collectively, on roles and places for “third parties”. The recognition of this “helping Third” as sociological character and of triad as an interactional specific pattern is necessary to pragmatically consider first-aid system as a set of plural commitments, crossing familial, civic and expert fields of concern. Theoretically, the research contributes to a “third-party sociology” by enlightening a third party dimension even if not triadic in first-aid intervention delivered by emergency public services

Full textOperational activity exposes firemen to danger and often leads them to touch the frontiers of society or the limits of the human body. Mobilisation of their body in these conditions bears upon their attitudes, their perceptions, their decision making and problem solving process, building the planting of the firemen’s operational culture. Dissonant relations this latter could maintain with administrative culture has an impact on the functioning of fire and rescue services. The exploration of this issue and the search for acculturation, with an eye to facilitate the functioning of the fire and rescue service welcoming the researcher, has been realised through an action-research process dealing with: Complete immersion of the researcher in the operational world (training, interventions), and in administrative world, allowing him to refer on this double experience in an analogical way when interacting with firemen, and to tackle the epistemological posture of the sociologist in an original way. A perspective of endogenous development referring on knowledge, skills, attitudes, think/act modes, and symbolical resources of operational culture The creation and the sustaining of a network of “marginal-sécant” persons that have a liberty of passage between both cultures The use of breaching and conative training skills, allowing to catalyze awareness, providing the physical mobilization of the firemen’s administrative managers, the mediation function of the action research, and agreement between groups and individuals This approach has contributed to make a democratic culture emerging in the administrative functioning of the fire and rescue service

Full textThis thesis is part of a project to design a learning platform funded by STDI, a company specialized in the development of digital applications for teaching purposes. This project took place at the CERV (European Center for Virtual Reality) with the aim of relying on technologies related to virtual reality. In continuity with several works previously carried out at the CERV, our scientific approach has focused on introducing the analysis of human activity into a real training situation in the design loops of a collaborative training platform. This work of analysis was carried out in collaboration with the SDIS 56 in the framework of the practical training of chiefs in a fire brigade. This work was based on three research subjects, each of which raised specific scientific issues : studying the complexity of the decision-making activity of the operators in the situation of intervention ; the coordination of the crew in intervention ; and the activity of trainers in situations of risk training.By making methodological choices inspired by the naturalistic approach, our different levels of analysis have revealed several results. The individual analysis emphasizes the decision-making alternation between analysis of the situation and implementation of the intervention, as well as the importance of the anticipation and planning processes. The collective analysis reveals the articulation during the intervention of the individual sense-making activities according to the personal objectives and the spatial and functional configuration of the team. Finally, the analysis of the activity of trainers make it possible to specify their role as simulations managers and that of facilitators during the debriefings allowing a construction of knowledge a posteriori.Taking into account our different results, we have considered the global nature of the virtual training environment and developed some ideas for the improvement of existing teaching tools

Full textThis PhD thesis is based on research conducted between 2015 and 2018 within The French Academy for Fire, Rescue and Civil Protection Officers, to which close to 3000 firemen, including 1000 Officers in training, participated. This thesis studies, based on a psychosocial approach, the interpersonal regulations at play during the decision-making processes of Mission Rescue Officers (MRO). Theses complex processes play a major role in the unrolling of rescue operations and in the office of MRO, as well as in the attribution of their leadership. The MRO’s decision-making depends on the collective’s actions and grounds the decisional biases in a psychosocial context. As a social subject, and in order to maintain a good quality of interpersonal relationship, the MRO follows a psychosocial logic framed by a set of rules from social means and origin, in parallel to a logic of operational performance. The author questions the dynamic of interpersonal processes based on social representation theories and highlights the criteria on which the acknowledgement of the MRO’s leadership by their team depends to assert their leadership, and which the MRO cannot ignore. As a result of this research a training model is presented which ultimately aims to improve decision-making processes. This model comprises a succession of levels. A first level consists in the development of personal skills towards decision-making. These skills will allow officers to prevent and counteract the negative effects of cognitive biases and heuristics in judgment. A second level, aims to build and solidify the collective as a skill set

Full textThis research focuses on nurses from fire brigades undergoing continuous training in the field of pre-hospital emergencies. The aim is to study the impacts of mistakes made during simulations and the sustainability of training, on the medium-term, depending on the degree of reflexivity gathered during debriefing, compared to the level without audio video instrumentation. The research method is mixed, quantitative and qualitative. The taxonomy of initial mistakes highlights mistakes in cognitive processing and non-technical mistakes, essentially in leadership, communication and organisation, which are consistent with literature. The influence of stress and emotions on the apprenticeship process is also listed. However, leadership reveals to be the main cause behind initial mistakes. The degree of reflexivity is correlated to the type of debriefing used, video footage proving to be the most efficient. Although the influence of filmed debriefing on the avoidance of initial mistakes is not statistically proven on the medium-term, qualitative analyses of corpora reveal the efficiency of simulation for the professionalisation of nurses working with emergencies and the limitation of repeated mistakes on the field. A link between training and permitted mistakes is observed during the debriefing period.Training is more fruitful in simulation rather than in real-life situations and the temporality of reflective processes is a favour from curriculum training. However, simulation can lead to mistakes due to posture confusion during role play.Highlighting the difficulty to take on a leader posture for a response team allows room for recommendations towards trainers

Full textDespite the large expenditure that is dedicated to forest fire suppression in Euro-Mediterranean countries, Australia and North-America, firefighters still face large and severe fire events which eventually entrap them. Investigation of Fire Services’ internal reports addresses here the weather and terrain leading to these dangerous fires. In France, strong wind is the main driver of the largest fires and of the fires that entrap firefighters. However, high temperature is also a key contributor as it influences violent fires with high rates of surface spread. In Australia, a lot of firefighters’ entrapments are due to shifts in wind direction, but others are associated to strong winds in rugged terrain. Whatever the regional specificities, more than 100 firefighters’ entrapments across the world were investigated to find the contribution of dynamic fire behaviors in these entrapments. The results return three different types of fires. During topography-influenced fires, in mountainous area, almost all the entrapments happen on slopes steeper than 20°, prone to flame attachment. During wind-driven fires, leeward slopes prone to vorticity-driven lateral fire spread are the most prominent configurations associated with entrapments. Finally, during convective fires, which are the most violent, entrapments can happen far away from any dangerous configuration. Firefighters should adjust their training courses and promote fire behavior analysts (FBAN) capabilities to benefit from the results of this work and improve their safety. FBAN may consider feedbacks from previous fires to suggest the most efficient and secure firefighting strategies and locations

Full textPompeius’ sons, Cnaeus and Sextus, are two major players of the civil wars of the end of the Roman Republic. This thesis aims to reconsider the political and military career of these two characters, between 47 and 35 BC., raising two issues: how do they build their legitimacy and power? How is their political entourage composed, how is it functioning and evolving? To deal with these questions, we have many literary sources at our disposal – including the works of Cicero, Appian and Cassius Dion – and, to deepen our investigation, two large preliminary studies had to be carried out: firstly, a detailed examination of the two brothers’ monetary issues, to analyse the representation of their power and legitimacy; secondly, a prosopography of their entourage, which allows to identify the partisans of Pompeius’ sons and to understand how this group is formed and evolves. The achievements of these two studies, rendered possible a more in-depth analysis of the political and military paths of Cnaeus and Sextus Pompey in different contexts (first, in the Iberian Peninsula, between 47 and 44; then in Sicily, from 43 to 36; finally, in the provinces of Asia and Bithynia, in 35), and to add new elements to the ongoing reflections on the nature and functioning of "political parties" in Rome at the end of the Republic
