Eleven species are reviewed. A lectotype of Pompilus sogdianus Morawitz 1893 is designated, illustrated and redescribed. The distribution of Arachnospila sogdiana (Morawitz) is limited to Tajikistan only. A new species from Tajikistan, A. gussakovskii sp. nov., is described and illustrated. A new synonymy is proposed for Pompilus clericalis Morawitz 1893 =Arachnospila mongolorufa Wolf & Móczár 1972, syn. nov. Psammochares subocellatus Haupt 1933 is synonymized with Psammochares effodiens f. quadrimaculata Haupt 1929, syn. nov., which is raised to specific status and removed to Arachnospila. The synonymy of Arachnospila sogdiana koenigsmanni Wolf 1970 with Pompilus sogdianus Morawitz 1893 is confirmed. Pompilus turcorum de Dalla Torre 1897 (=Pompilus vagans Radoszkowski 1877, nom. praeocc., nec Costa 1874) is resurrected and moved to Arachnospila. A key to the species for both sexes is given.

Abstract:
The three species and two subspecies of the Evagetes crassicornis species-group are reviewed. A new species, Evagetes orientalis, sp. nov., is described and illustrated from the Russian Far East. A lectotype of Pompilus sahlbergi F. Morawitz 1893 is redescribed. Evagetes crassicornis crassicornis (Shuckard) is recorded for the first time from Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Alaska. A key is presented for both sexes of this species-group.

Two hundred and forty-four valid species in 36 genera are listed. The genus Telostegus Costa, 1887 with the species T. inermis (Brullé, 1833) are newly recorded from Russia. Lectotypes are designated for Salius desertorum F. Morawitz, 1891, Psammochares amurensis Gussakovskij, 1932, and Pompilus cardinalis F. Morawitz, 1891. The generic status of Batozonellus Arnold, 1937, stat. resurr. is reinstated. Five taxa: Ceropales pygmaea pygmaea Kohl, 1880, C. ruficornis Gussakovskij, 1931, Eoferreola anatolica Priesner, 1973, Hemipepsis sinensis (Smith, 1855), and Telostegus nigritulus (Klug, 1834) are excluded from the list of the Russian fauna. The world number of genus-group names of Pompilidae is clarified: 451 nominal names, including 42 unavailable names, were proposed. Of the 409 available names, 254 are currently considered valid.

Abstract:
Microhabitats capacity to support insect species diversity and persistence were evaluated implementing solitary parasitoids and predatory insects according to different phases of herbicide and chemical fertilizer applications. Two species of the genus Xanthopimpla (Ichneumonidae) and one species of the genus Pompilus (Pompilidae) showed relationships on vegetation-type microhabitats, notably natural weeds, leguminous cover crops, and the beneficial plant Turnera subulata, while two species of the genus Evania (Evaniidae) showed relationships with chipped oil palm trunks. One species from the genus Odontomachus (Formicidae) as an exclusive predatory ant was related to both chipped oil palm trunks and the beneficial plant T. subulata. Xanthopimpla parasitoids exhibited abundance fluctuations difference around natural weeds during herbicide application phases between three- and six-years old oil palm stands, with decreased and increased abundance patterns of the former and the latter, respectively. 18 years old oil palm stand showed increased abundance patterns only along with the different phases of chemical fertilizer applications. The importance of natural weeds diversity, restrictions of leguminous cover crops, frequency of herbicide applications, and the arrangements between beneficial plants and wood-based microhabitats that benefited insect parasitoids and predators were discussed.

Abstract:
DNA barcoding studies to elucidate the evolutionary and dispersal history of the current populations of Nautilus pompilius allow us to develop a greater understanding of their biology, their movement and the systematic relationships between different groups. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted on Australian N. pompilius, and COI sequences were generated for 98 discrete accessions. Sequences from samples collected across the distribution were sourced from GenBank and included in the analyses. Maximum likelihood revealed three distinct clades for N. pompilius: (1) populations sourced from west Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines; (2) populations collected from east Australia and Papua New Guinea; (3) western Pacific accessions from Vanuatu, American Samoa and Fiji, supporting previous findings on the evolutionary divergence of N. pompilius. A minimum spanning tree revealed 49 discrete haplotypes for the 128 accessions, from a total of 16 discrete sampling locations. Population similarity reflects oceanic topographic features, with divergence between populations across the N. pompilius range mirroring geographical separation. This illustrates the success of DNA barcoding as a tool to identify geographic origin, and looks to the future role of such technology in population genetics and evolutionary biology.

The discovery of a specimen of Nautilus praepompilius Shimansky, 1957, from the Chegan Formation of Kazakhstan confirms that this species is assignable to Nautilus, and that this extant genus extends back to the late Eocene. It is morphologically closest to Nautilus pompilius Linnaeus. The nepionic constriction shows that the hatching size was ca. 23 mm dia, close to that for Nautilus pompilius (ca. 26 mm dia).

SUMMARY Using X-ray analytical studies and computational tomography, the position of the digestive tract of the tetrabranchiate cephalopod Nautilus pompilius L. was demonstrated in a living animal. For the first time, a detailed analysis of the rate of digestion and the duration of the different phases of a digestive cycle has been made using these in vivomethods. At 20 min after food intake, the food has entered the stomach, where it is reduced to small pieces; most is stored in the crop, which is enlarged to approximately four times its original size. The chyme reaches the midgut gland 3 h and the rectal loop 5 h after food intake. The time between food intake and elimination is 12 h. Thus, in Nautilus pompilius,digestion takes approximately the same time as described for nectobenthic sepioids and benthic octopods but is approximately 6 h longer than in loliginids, which have a pelagic mode of life. Furthermore, the three-dimensional structure of the digestive tract of a living Nautilus pompilius L. was demonstrated using computational tomography.

AbstractThe epigram on Casca and his amica senex (p. 120 FPL4 Bl.), whose author’s name is given by the manuscripts of Varro L. 7.28 as Papinius and by those of Priscian Inst. Gramm. 3.11 as Pomponius or Pompnius, is to be attributed to Pompilius, whom Varro also cites in two other places (L. 7.93; Men. frg. 356 A.). Pompilius is not to be considered a tragedian but a writer of early satura following in the footsteps of Ennius and Pacuvius and paving the way for Lucilius. The evidence for this thesis, which was already stated in the 19th century but has been disregarded in recent times, is collected and vindicated.

The Sr, Mg, and Ca chemistry and mineralogy of the shell, beaks, and inorganic compounds of the renal appendages of Nautilus pompilius Linné 1758 reveal a complex physiochemical system of biomineralization. The chemistry of the shell and septal aragonite is similar, and establish that N. pompilius discriminates against the concentration of Sr and Mg in sea water by 78% and more than 99% respectively. Beaks consist of high-Mg calcite (4.4% MgCO3). Renal appendages contain either aggregates of crystals (uroliths) of Mg-oxalate dihydrate with nuclei of hydroxyapatite or disassociated particles of hydroxyapatite or both. There is no evidence that uroliths or hydroxyapatite particles serve as temporary reservoirs of Ca during calcification of septa.

Objectif : En France, peu d’études ont exploré la prévalence du trouble de stress post-traumatique (TSPT) chez les pompiers. Une étude de 2007 retrouve un taux de 1 %, identique à celui de la population générale. Or, les pompiers sont surexposés aux interventions potentiellement traumatogènes et sont donc à risque de traumatismes vicariants, c’est-à-dire par procuration. L’objectif de notre étude était d’estimer la prévalence du TSPT chez les marins-pompiers du bataillon de marins-pompiers de Marseille. Matériel et méthodes : Durant six mois, les marins-pompiers se présentant à leur visite médicale périodique au service médical d’unité ont rempli un autoquestionnaire comprenant des données sociodémographiques, professionnelles et la Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist Scale (PCLS) avec un seuil à 44. Résultats : Parmi les 356 sauveteurs inclus, soit un taux de réponse de 86 %, 4 % (IC 95 % : [2 ; 7]) avaient un TSPT. Les facteurs associés étaient une fatigue durable, des répercussions négatives sur la vie familiale, professionnelle, sociale et le ressenti d’un manque de soutien institutionnel. Conclusion : Ces résultats confirment que les sauveteurs constituent une population à risque. Afin de comparer avec les études internationales, de nouvelles recherches avec la PCL-5 seraient souhaitables.

The ‘living fossil’ Nautilus pompilius is thought to use olfaction as its primary sensory system during foraging, yet neither the organs responsible for olfaction nor the mechanisms or behaviors associated with odor tracking have been subjected to experimentation. Flume testing under dark conditions revealed that Nautilus could consistently detect and follow turbulent odor plumes to the source over distances up to 10 m, exhibiting two types of orientation behavior while sampling in three dimensions. The paired rhinophores were necessary for orientation behavior: when they were temporarily blocked either uni- or bilaterally, Nautilus detected odor but could not track the plume and locate the source. Animals that were tested post-blockage were able to track and locate the source. The role of the 90 thin tentacles remains enigmatic; they seemed to be able to detect odor, but they were not capable of guiding orientation behavior towards a distant odor source. Bilateral chemical sensing by rhinophores in three dimensions may have been the Umwelt of ammonites and belemnites before the evolution of complex eyes and fast locomotion in modern coleoids.

AbstractIntraspecific variation of organisms is of great importance to correctly carry out taxonomic work, which is a prerequisite for key disciplines in paleontology such as community paleoecology, biostratigraphy, and biogeography. However, intraspecific variation is rarely studied in ectocochleate cephalopods (ammonoids and nautiloids), for which an excessive number of taxa was established during the past centuries. Because intraspecific variation of fossilized organisms suffers from various biases (time averaging and taphonomy), an extant example is needed for actualistic comparison. We applied 3D morphometry to 93 specimens of Nautilus pompilius from three different geographic populations. This data set was used to examine the intraspecific variation throughout ontogeny in detail. Although there are slight differences between the populations as well as some measurement biases, a common pattern of intraspecific variation appears to be present. High variation in morphometric variables appears early in ontogeny and then decreases gradually in the following ontogenetic stages. Subsequently, the variation shows an increase again before maturity until a sharp increase or decrease occurs toward the end of ontogeny. Comparison with intraspecific variation of ammonoids and belemnites illustrated that some groups have ontogenetic patterns of intraspecific variation that are similar to that of N. pompilius. This implies that the abovementioned ontogenetic pattern of intraspecific variation might be common in some major cephalopod clades.

The complexity of the Nautilus pompilius shell is analyzed in terms of its fractal dimension and its equiangular spiral form. Our findings assert that the shell is fractal from its birth and that its growth is dictated by a self-similar criterion (we obtain the fractal dimension of the shell as a function of time). The variables that have been used for the analysis show an exponential dependence on the number of chambers/age of the cephalopod, a property inherited from its form.

L’article sera divisé en trois parties. Premièrement, nous exposerons les modalités d’appropriation de l’induction et de l’itération dans une démarche de recherche mixte. Deuxièmement, nous montrerons comment les données qualitatives obtenues lors d’observations et d’entrevues ont contribué à l’élaboration d’un questionnaire de recherche. Troisièmement, nous verrons à l’aide d’exemples la pertinence d’une analyse mixte pour l’élaboration et la validation interne et externe de la théorisation.

The cirri of the digital tentacles ofNautilus pompiliusare covered by annular ridges, more pronounced on the oral (adhesive) than the aboral side. On the oral side the epithelium is thicker on the proximal and outer surfaces of the ridges than on their distal surfaces. Prominent electron-dense granules occur in the cells of the thick epithelium, but are absent from the thin epithelium and the epithelium of the aboral surface. These granules contain mucopolysaccharide and may be responsible for adhesion.The digital tentacles ofNautilusare used for attachment to, for example, prey, the substratum, or the partner's shell during mating. Their general structure and histology have been described by Owen (1832), Willey (1898), Barber & Wright (1969), Fukuda (1987) and Kier (1987). The mechanism of adhesion is still uncertain. Barber & Wright (1969) report epithelial cells of two types: pigmented cells containing pigment granules 0–5–1 µm in diameter, interspersed with a small number of mucus-producing cells which may help with the adhesive process.

Caused by habits such as poor diets, lack of physical activity practice or smoking, non-communicable diseases were elected by the World Health Organization as one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century, despite a lot of information produced in social media focused on preventing this type of disease. This paper presents the Pompilos Model, which aims at improving computer-aided social support by suggesting beneficial health resources and revealing what inuences other people's health, so to foster better health behaviors in social relations. In order to evaluate the model's feasibility, we performed a random experiment during one month and half with two groups to assess the influence of messages related to the prevention of chronic diseases. Those messages presented information on a healthier diet, the practice of physical activities, and ways to lose weight, from monitored Twitter profiles on the habits of health assistant web application's users. So it would be possible to manage food intake, the practice of physical activities, and weight control. Messages related to the prevention of chronic diseases, such as a healthier diet, the practice of physical activities, and weight loss from monitored Twitter profiles were directed to an intervention group as a way to re-engage users in their care activities. With this information, we found a correlation between message reading and the access to the application history feature among intervention users.
