Abstract:

Abstract:
The large Caribbean muricid originally named Murex asperrimus Lamarck, 1822 (non Gmelin, 1791), and illustrated by Kiener (1881), like many mollusks named in that era, was only given the general locality of “West Indes” in its description. The actual locality of this large and impressive taxon was never published, and it became a lost taxon. Since it was obscure, and specimens were not commonly known it has been unceremoniously synonymized with Phyllonotus pomum (Gmelin, 1791) (see Abbott, 1974). Recently, five specimens of this lost taxon were live collected in the Dominican Republic, ranging in length from 73.8 to 87.0 mm. This taxonomic note removes the taxon from synonymy, elevates it to full species level as Phyllonotus asperrimus (Lamarck, 1822), and fixes its type locality as the Dominican Republic

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of the Workers Party of Marxist Unity (POUM), which played a prominent role in the events of the Spanish Revolution and the Civil War of 1936-1939. The author traces the history of the anti-Stalinist Marxist-Leninist movement from the 1920s, which developed in the context of regroupings of left-wing radi-cal groups in Catalonia. Formed in 1935, the POUM took an active part in the revolutionary events in Catalonia in 1936-1937. One of the priorities of the POUM was to expose the Stalinist leadership of the Comintern and the USSR. The POUM also generated problems for the pro-Soviet Communists due to its rapprochement with the CNT. The decisive conflict occurred during the May clashes 1937 in Barcelona, which led to the transformation of the republican regime. The May winners launched a campaign of harassment of the POUM, which turned into repression, the victim of which was A. Nin and others. However, the Republican system maintained political pluralism, and an attempt to crack down on the POUM leaders through a Soviet-style process failed. However, POUM did not recover from the blow he re-ceived

Abstract:
Multiagent goal recognition is important in many simulation systems. Many of the existing modeling methods need detailed domain knowledge of agents’ cooperative behaviors and a training dataset to estimate policies. To solve these problems, we propose a novel decentralized partially observable decision model (Dec-POMDM), which models cooperative behaviors by joint policies. In this compact way, we only focus on the distribution of joint policies. Additionally, a model-free algorithm, cooperative colearning based on Sarsa, is exploited to estimate agents’ policies under the assumption of rationality, which makes the training dataset unnecessary. In the inference, considering that the Dec-POMDM is discrete and its state space is large, we implement a marginal filter (MF) under the framework of the Dec-POMDM, where the initial world states and results of actions are uncertain. In the experiments, a new scenario is designed based on the standard predator-prey problem: we increase the number of preys, and our aim is to recognize the real target of predators. Experiment results show that (a) our method recognizes goals well even when they change dynamically; (b) the Dec-POMDM outperforms supervised trained HMMs in terms of precision, recall, and F-measure; and (c) the MF infers goals more efficiently than the particle filter under the framework of the Dec-POMDM.

Abstract:
Multiagent goal recognition is a tough yet important problem in many real time strategy games or simulation systems. Traditional modeling methods either are in great demand of detailed agents’ domain knowledge and training dataset for policy estimation or lack clear definition of action duration. To solve the above problems, we propose a novel Dec-POMDM-T model, combining the classic Dec-POMDP, an observation model for recognizer, joint goal with its termination indicator, and time duration variables for actions with action termination variables. In this paper, a model-free algorithm named cooperative colearning based on Sarsa is used. Considering that Dec-POMDM-T usually encounters multiagent goal recognition problems with different sorts of noises, partially missing data, and unknown action durations, the paper exploits the SIS PF with resampling for inference under the dynamic Bayesian network structure of Dec-POMDM-T. In experiments, a modified predator-prey scenario is adopted to study multiagent joint goal recognition problem, which is the recognition of the joint target shared among cooperative predators. Experiment results show that (a) Dec-POMDM-T works effectively in multiagent goal recognition and adapts well to dynamic changing goals within agent group; (b) Dec-POMDM-T outperforms traditional Dec-MDP-based methods in terms of precision, recall, andF-measure.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to one of the most tragic topics in the history of this party and the history of the Spanish Republic as a whole, namely, the trial of the leaders of the Workers’ Party of Marxist Unification. The following unpublished documents stored in the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History were used for the analysis (F. 495. Op. 183): letters, personal files, protocols of interrogations after May Days, lists and reports on the “connection” between Trotskyi and the POUM, reports on the preparation and course of the trial of the POUM. Members of the POUM were accused of participating in a “rebellion”, moving to change the social order of the Republic. The accusation of the POUM connections with Franco did not seem convincing, either in Spain or abroad. The international public’s attention was focused on the trial of the POUM. Despite the fact that Spain failed to organize a show trial in the style of the “Moscow trials” and the “conspiracy between Trotskyi and Fascists” was not confirmed, the verdict had a negative impact on the POUM reputation. Thus, the trial of the POUM remained in history as one of the “black spots” in the interaction between the Spanish Republic and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. However, the prisoners of the POUM resisted pressure, they were supported morally by participants of the campaign of solidarity in Spain and abroad. The struggle for a kind of rehabilitation of the party continued in emigration.

Abstract:
The TV and the video have already been seen as a threat to formal education, accused of spreading a world out of reality, of inducing students to submerge in a world of violence and ideology controlling, and of taking time that students could use studying. However, this pointof view has been replaced as quick as the means of communication and information technology stablish themselves as spaces for socialization and learning. In association with other resources and recent technological breakthoughs, audiovisual productions are present ina variety of mechanisms and environments, including schools, showing that the popularization of technology can give new directions to traditional school practices, consolidating new habits, values and kinds of interaction. In foreign language teaching, for instance, it seems a consensus that TV and video resources can offer students more authentic and meaningful experiences of learning. However, the insertion of new technological resources in teaching (or new uses for old resources) is not a simple process. It deals with several factors, amongst which are the ones related to teachers. They are, effectively, the oneswho determine wether a technology will be implemented efficiently or not. Simply demanding that teachers adopt new practices and technological artifacts in their professional activity without considering how they see the technology, what their expectations and willings are can contribute for it not to be adopted efficiently, even when motivated by political decisions, enactments and laws. This work considers teachers as a key element forchangings to happen in formal education, as well as for the adoption of technological artifacts, like the TV or video, as it investigates how the process of adoption of video and films by a group of english teachers occurs. For that, the theoretical background is based on elements ofSociocultural Theory such as Activity Theory (Engeström, Miettinen & Punamäki, 1999; Tolman, 1999; Lekstorsky, 1999; Lantolf, 2000), the Theory of Expansive Learning (Engeströn, 1999), the Theory of Perception and Action and the Theory of Affordance (Gibson, 1986; Van Lier, 1998; Albrechtsen et al, 2001; Günter, 2003). Concepts like Normalization (Bax, 2003), Multimodality (Granström, House & Karlson, 2002; Massaro, 2002; Chares & Kalterbacher, 2004), Convergency (Jenkins, 2004), and the model of technological adoption conceived by Sandhotlz, Ringstaff & Dwyer (1997) were also largely used. This study consists of an investigation of qualitative nature oriented by the principlesand procedings of action reserch. It verifies the stages/trajectories through which the english teachers of an extension course at Universidade Federal do Piauí went when participating of awork group created to discuss the benefits, problems and procedings related to the use of video and films as a didactic tool. The objectives of this research were to identify whether and how the teachers perceived video and films as a didactic-thecnological artifact, the relationship between positive/negative perceptions and actions directed to the adoption, as well as investigatin on how problem solving activities were conducted. The results show that professional and personal experiences with video and films can affect the way teachers see techology in their work environment. It also shows that rejection is related to a high level ofuncertainties concerning the applicability and efficiency of the technological artifact.

Abstract:
Abstract An obvious anatomical sex difference in adult humans concerns the size and shape of the larynx, with resultant differences in vocal pitch; this is usually deeper in men than in women. These structural and vocal sex differences develop during puberty when, under the action of testosterone, the cartilages and muscles of the male larynx enlarge and the vocal cords increase in length. The thyroid cartilage, the largest of the nine cartilages which make up the larynx, becomes especially prominent in some males, causing a bulge to appear in the midline at the front of the neck; this is the pomum Adami, or Adam’s apple (Figure 8.1). Darwin (1871) was well aware of this sex difference in Homo sapiens, and noted parallels in the greater size of the larynx and deeper vocalizations of various male mammals. He considered that ‘man appears to have inherited this difference from his early progenitors. His vocal cords are about one third longer than in woman, or than in boys.’

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the assertions that Orwell ascribed to some form of Trotskyism. Central to these is his fighting with the quasi-Trotskyist POUM militia in the Spanish Civil War. But this and the following suppression of the POUM were experiences that fostered his analysis of the degeneration of the Russian Revolution and hence were the seed-plot of both Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. He saw the Kronstadt mutiny of 1921 (for the repression of which Trotsky had responsibility) as the pivotal event in Russia and hence the reason for the emergence of what he termed ‘oligarchical collectivism’. His almost certain intellectual indebtedness to the American James Burnham, himself a former Trotskyist, is emphasized, as is his assessment of Trotsky whom, unsurprisingly, he held in low esteem.

Strategic environmental evaluation: Case study, Urban Plan, POUM Besalú (Catalonia). According to the existing legislation in Catalonia it is necessary as a preventative method to carry out a process of environmental evaluation for planning and for public programmes which would allow for the integration of environment issues in the decision making processes. The urban town plans are considered to be public plans and therefore they must take into account this environmental evaluation. In particular they must consider the necessary actions as well as the specific documentation which the existing regulation requires (article 7 of the 9/2006 Regulation of 28 April relating to the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment). &#x0D; &#x0D; As an instrument for environmental evaluation, the Urban Town Plan (POUM) Besalú 2007, has done a report on environmental sustainability, (ISA). The objective of this report is to offer a series of sustainable criterion which serve as a basis for the town planning development, basing itself upon the integration of the sustainable principals established in: The 305/2006 Decree, the State Legislation 9/2006, the Directive 2001/42/CE and the blueprint of the Catalan Environmental Evaluation Legislation for Plans and Programmes (AAPP).&#x0D; &#x0D; The urbanistic Legislation and its Regulations indicate to be clearly in favour of a sustainable urban development based upon the rational use of land in order to create compatibility between growth and the necessary economic dynamism together with social cohesion, respect towards the environment and the quality of life of the present and future generations. &#x0D; &#x0D; According to the Directive 2001/42/CE, the sustainable environmental elements which ought to be incorporated into the Urban Town Plan need to be integrated from the beginning of the decision making process which is required in the establishing of the general layout plan. For this reason it is necessary to establish the following environmental objectives:&#x0D; * Environmental diagnosis of the site.&#x0D; * Establishment of environmental objectives.&#x0D; * Setting up of pointers for compliance of the established objectives.&#x0D; * Incorporation of environmental objectives in the setting up of town plans, regulations, programming and financing.&#x0D; * Verification of compliance with established objectives.&#x0D; * Deployment measures and follow up.&#x0D; &#x0D; According to the Town Planning article 3.1 of the Legislative Decree 1/2005 dated 26 July, the concept of sustainability related to urban layout is understood as the following: ”Sustainable urban development is defined as the rational use of land and the environment and it involves the combination of the needs of expansion with the preservation of natural resources while taking into consideration landscape, arqueological, historic and cultural values with the intention of guaranteeing the quality of life of present and future generations.” &#x0D; &#x0D; This case study wishes to highlight the importance of the environmental analysis and the evaluation of the most important social-environmental characteristics in the new sectors of proposed growth and in the areas subject to modification and/or transformation the same as those in the immediate territorial context(this measure is required in the reference Document emited by the appropriate environmental body “Girona Land strategic environmental evaluation Office”) in order to justify the urban plan in accordance with urbanistic and sustainable social-environmental criterion.
