We adopted allometric models to identify the most appropriate body size/shape characteristics associated with physical performance activities of Greek school children. Children underwent assessments for aerobic and anaerobic fitness, flexibility and hand-grip strength. Results suggest that the inverse Ponderal index and not BMI is the most appropriate body-shape indicator associated with running and jumping activities. Height was negatively associated with flexibility, but both height and weight were positively associated with hand-grip strength. In conclusion, allometric models provide a valu

Certainly, we must address the far reaching ideological concerns that permeate any performance, but within specific parameters, within the confines of a particular performance, the interrelationship of material components demands that we deal with the physical presence that appears before us. The main purpose of this chapter is to ponder the compensation system that characterizes SMEs the most, both internationally and in Colombia, and to know about social responsibility regarding compensation. To reach this objective, a trip is made through the history of salaries worldwide up to compensation in Colombia, when the minimum legal wage in force is defined. Social responsibility in a compensation system is pondered and the forms that characterize compensation in organizations, mainly in SMEs, are described. It is concluded, among other aspects, that incentives for performance is the way used by SMEs to compensate their collaborators, specially their CEOs.

This introductory chapter ponders on the connections between poetry and music, their similarities, and also what sets them apart. It talks about music and poetry from a maker's standpoint, in particular how poetry and music are performed and that poetry turns out to share with music in performance, was connected with other qualities both genres share. These qualities, in turn, have more to do with technical, makerly concerns than with types and occasions of performance. They are more concerned with something intrinsic to how music and poetry are structured than simply with the giving and receiving of a particular experience.

This chapter ponders the cultural significance of performances of American Jewish music and musical artists in contemporary European Jewish communities. It explains how performances of liturgical and secular music expressing a European Jewish heritage could nourish the ongoing 'liberal Jewish renaissance' in Germany, such as the appearances of the Reform cantor Rebecca Garfein in Berlin in the late 1990s. It also mentions the 'Klezmaniacs' in Poland and Ukraine in 2000 that awoke enthusiasm among Jewish youth and resentment among their non-Jewish neighbours. The chapter demonstrates how performers were both ambassadors and pilgrims of American Jewish culture. It discusses the twentieth-century American Jewry that used sound to build bridges and facilitated a transnational Jewish exchange.

This chapter ponders how to best measure academy-business partnerships. While metrics, key performance indicators, balanced scorecards, objectives and key results, and dashboards are important, questions remain on what to measure, how, and a number of complex dynamics that exist given the multi-variate, multi-level, and multi-dimensional considerations. While many tools, indices, and checklists have emerged, none specifically report on academy-business partnerships. Thus, it is also the time of data chaos. The Clevenger Nexus is in ongoing development and considers three axes, which would need to include a host of variables in each area of investment, issue, and innovation. Various statistical methods, opportunities, and challenges are explored relevant to the journey and process of developing such a model.

Full text
Abstract:
An air quality monitoring network (AQMN) is a basic piece of environmental management due to that it satisfies the major role in monitoring of environment emissions, in special relevance to target air pollutants. An adequate installation would lead to support high efficiency of the network. Therefore, AQMN pre-layout should be considered as an essential factor in regarding with the location of fixed measurement stations within AQMN, as the minimum number of sampling points. Nevertheless, once AQMN has been already installed, and given that the spatial air pollutants pattern can vary along time, an assessment of the AQMN design would be addressed in order to identify the presence of potential redundant fixed monitoring stations. This approach would let to improve the AQMN performance, reduce maintenance costs of the network and consolidate the investment on those more efficient fixed stations. The chapter includes aspects relative to air pollutants measured by networks, their representativeness, limitations, importance, and the future needs. It ponders the need of re-assessment of the AQMN layout for assuring (i) a right evaluation of the human being exposure to atmospheric pollutants and controlling the environmental emissions into the atmosphere and (ii) an adequate performance of the network along time.

Abstract:
At the age of five, dear reader, I walked into my first- grade classroom and fell in love with learning. I must have become seriously smitten, for not one year since that time have I not been in schools . . . and it’s been more than sixty years! My passions have been consistent: education, learning, teaching. Teachers, students, schools. Scholars, writers, thinkers. Seeking, studying, wondering. Writing, speaking, mentoring. I remain committed to helping my fellow learners as we navigate our way through our lives. I did my first teaching as a fifth grader, when I showed a first grader how to tap- dance for the annual school play. Maybe that was when I got hooked on teaching. The majority of my career has been spent in university settings, guiding future teachers and working with children. Through it all, I have been consistently drawn to the nuggets. Whether I’m reading a book, listening to a lecture, or studying great thinkers, the small gems of wisdom I’ve found have always made me shiver. When I discovered a bit of simple wisdom, I felt it to my core. I would remember it. I would look for and ponder connections. I would begin to see its scope and profundity, and I would try to tell everyone about the idea. Those nuggets became my bedrock for trying to understand people. From my undergraduate days, I realized that I was privately more passionate about studying and understanding people than I was about studying and understanding music, which I had thought would be my career. Early on, I knew that my destiny was not on the performance stage: it was in teaching, writing, and mentoring. In the 1990s, after a year of extreme conflict and adversity, I decided I wanted to learn about mediation. I wanted to understand how we experience conflict and what we can do to resolve it. I became certified in basic mediation, family mediation, and victim- offender mediation. For seventeen years, I have volunteered to mediate cases for Justice Court in Bozeman, Montana. Mediation continually teaches me about people: what hurts us, what threatens us, what reconciles us, what smooths our troubles.

Abstract:
Some educators become troubled when they watch award ceremonies for teachers and news segments about schools. Very often in those settings, videos show teachers engaged in dramatic, highly animated activity. Nearly all have bold personalities, and students’ enthusiasm can verge on frenetic. Why might educators be troubled about these images of education? Because the implicit message seems to be that full- throttle dramatic behavior equates with teaching. That groups jumping and shouting equates with learning. Animation can be delivered on a sliding scale that we turn up or turn down, based on students’ learning needs and desires. Varying intensities of verbal and nonverbal communication are important for all teachers to master. Vocal expression and volume, posture, eye contact and expression, gestures, movement, and proximity— all are behaviors that contribute to our animation and teaching personae. If we generate all the energy and excitement in the room, we may be missing out on helping all our students learn. If we treat teaching as entertainment, as our performance of the lesson, we may be missing out on learning how our students learn. Variation in intensities and types of animation is pedagogically sound and educationally warranted. Quiet and calm may need infusions of bold and invigorated. Boisterous and loud may need times of peaceful and hushed . . . all for the benefit of student learning. A self- check may help us reflect on teaching tendencies and ponder the point at which our entertainer personalities may be subduing students’ learning. • Are we the primary generator of ideas during our classes? • Do we rely on quips, jokes, and teasing to engage students? • Does our level of animation and drama drive the class and the lesson? • Does the proportion of our teacher- talk greatly outweigh student- talk? • Do we value quiet, hesitant student contributions as much as eager, enthusiastic ones? It is every teacher’s challenge to notice and adapt for the benefit of students. Whether our comfort lies in being “a sage on the stage” or “a guide at the side,” we know that we likely need to do both for the benefit of students’ learning.

A simplified two-degree-of-freedom model is considered as the reference model and then a comprehensive eight-degree-of-freedom model is developed as the simulation tool. In the next step, the comprehensive control system has been designed. The control system based on the yaw rate error of the actual vehicle comparing to the predefined reference model, the actual vehi

Abstract:
Abstract Cycle-to-cycle variation (CCV) of in-cylinder flow strongly affects the performance and efficiency of spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) engines. In order to achieve a precise flow control inside the engine, the underlying dynamic features of flow field CCV must be thoroughly investigated. In this work, large-eddy simulations (LES) with 50 consecutive cycles are employed for high fidelity numerical realizations of engine flow under motoring condition. To supplement the numerical analysis, time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are also conducted in several cut
