No Maastrichtiano, ocorre elevação do nível do mar. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The studied area is located on the Black Sea coast, central-northern Turkey, where Pontides Belt outcrops are exposed. The studied interval belongs to Akveren Formation, a sedimentary section deposited during the Upper Cretaceous to Lower Cenozoic (Lower Campanian to Upper Eocene), as dated by Kirici et al. (2007). Theaim of this study is to present depositional models for the Pontides Belt in the studie darea, based on field geology, sampling, petrographic descriptions, facies association and stratigraphic relations. Akveren Formation is a Lower Campanian to Eocene marine carbonate sequence, withpaleo-Tethyan fauna, well exposed in Pontides Belt at Black Sea coast. Bioclasts accumulations tend to form sigmoidal progradational bars, in high energy shallow water environments. Laterally, lagoonal facies from restricted shallow waters, and slope facies from higher water depth in the external portions of the platform arealso observed. In Paleocene/Eocene, high energy shallow water bioclastic banks parallel to the coastline are formed by red algae and macroforams as Discocyclina. Some calciturbidites and tempestites were also observed, as result of reworking in higher energy transportevents.During Lower Campanian, it was registered a high level sea water system tract with progradation of bioclastic bars. In Upper Campanian, a relative sea level fall occurred, causing partial exposure and erosion of the platform. In Maastrichtian, sea level returnsto rise, but at to lower levels than found in the Campanian. Intense tectonic activityduring Paleocene uplifted the area with intense associated volcanism. The Upper Paleocene/Eocene relative sea level fall led the transport of terrigenous sediments tothe platform, which were reworked during the early stages of the transgressive systemtract.

Ustaömer, Timur. "Pre-Late Jurassic tectonic-sedimentary evolution of North Tethys, Central Pontides, N. Turkey." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/13152.

Full text
Abstract:
Pre-Late Jurassic basement of the Central Pontides comprises a thick subduction-accretion complex, amalgamated since Late Palaeozoic. Detailed structural, sedimentological and geochemical studies reveal a number of major tectonic units, assembled through plate tectonics processes. Two oceanic basins are recognised, separated by two different tectonic units. The first is the Devrekani Metamorphic Unit, gneisses and amphibolites at the base, transgressively overlain by metamorphosed carbonates. This unit is interpreted as basement of a rifted south Eurasian margin fragment. The cover of this unit may be represented by the Palaeozoic of Istanbul and Early Mesozoic sequences of the W Pontides. The second unit is the Cangaldav g Complex, a 10 km-thick, imbricated pile of evolved volcanics and volcaniclastics, overlying oceanic basement, comprising sheeted dykes and basic lavas. This unit is interpreted as a Late Palaeozoic south-facing oceanic arc. The northern oceanic basin is represented by the Küe Complex, a structurally thickened wedge of siliciclastic turbidites, interleaved with a dismembered, supra-subduction zone ophiolite. The Küe Complex is interpreted as a Triassic to Early-Mid Jurassic subduction-accretion complex of southward polarity. The southerly basin is represented by the Domuzdav g-Saraycikdav g Unit, a Palaeozoic-Early Mesozoic subduction-accretion complex of northward polarity, comprising an ophiolitic melange in the north and an accretionary prism in the south, both metamorphosed to blueschist facies. Meta-basites are of MORB type. Structurally beneath is a collapsed Permian carbonate platform, together with its passive margin sequences, both to the north and south. Lavas associated with these passive margin sequences are of within plate-type without an identifiable subduction component. In the proposed model, Palaeotethys was subducted northwards under an active Eurasian margin during Late Palaeozoic time, giving rise to a near continental margin arc. A continental sliver was rifted off (Devrekani), related to transform and/or active margin processes, opening the Küe Basin as a back-arc basin in latest Palaeozoic-earliest Mesozoic time.

Abstract:
An integrated array of analytical methods -including clay mineralogy, vitrinite reflectance, Raman spectroscopy on carbonaceous material, and apatite fission-track analysis- was employed to constrain the thermal and thermochronological evolution of selected portions of the Pontides of northern Turkey. (1) A multimethod investigation was applied for the first time to characterise the thermal history of the Karakaya Complex, a Permo-Triassic subduction-accretion complex cropping out throughout the Sakarya Zone. The results indicate two different thermal regimes: the Lower Karakaya Complex (Nilüfer Unit) -mostly made of metabasite and marble- suffered peak temperatures of 300-500°C (greenschist facies); the Upper Karakaya Complex (Hodul and the Orhanlar Units) –mostly made of greywacke and arkose- yielded heterogeneous peak temperatures (125-376°C), possibly the result of different degree of involvement of the units in the complex dynamic processes of the accretionary wedge. Contrary to common belief, the results of this study indicate that the entire Karakaya Complex suffered metamorphic conditions. Moreover, a good degree of correlation among the results of these methods demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy on carbonaceous material can be applied successfully to temperature ranges of 200-330°C, thus extending the application of this method from higher grade metamorphic contexts to lower grade metamorphic conditions. (2) Apatite fission-track analysis was applied to the Sakarya and the İstanbul Zones in order to constrain the exhumation history and timing of amalgamation of these two exotic terranes. AFT ages from the İstanbul and Sakarya terranes recorded three distinct episodes of exhumation related to the complex tectonic evolution of the Pontides. (i) Paleocene - early Eocene ages (62.3-50.3 Ma) reflect the closure of the İzmir-Ankara ocean and the ensuing collision between the Sakarya terrane and the Anatolide-Tauride Block. (ii) Late Eocene - earliest Oligocene (43.5-32.3 Ma) ages reflect renewed tectonic activity along the İzmir-Ankara. (iii) Late Oligocene- Early Miocene ages reflect the onset and development of the northern Aegean extension. The consistency of AFT ages, both north and south of the tectonic contact between the İstanbul and Sakarya terranes, suggest that such terranes were amalgamated in pre-Cenozoic times. (3) Fission-track analysis was also applied to rock samples from the Marmara region, in an attempt to constrain the inception and development of the North Anatolian Fault system in the region. The results agree with those from the central Pontides. The youngest AFT ages (Late Oligocene - early Miocene) were recorded in the western portion of the Marmara Sea region and reflect the onset and development of northern Aegean extension. Fission-track data from the eastern Marmara Sea region indicate rapid Early Eocene exhumation induced by the development of the İzmir-Ankara orogenic wedge. Thermochronological data along the trace of the Ganos Fault –a segment of the North Anatolian Fault system- indicate the presence of a tectonic discontinuity active by Late Oligocene time, i.e. well before the arrival of the North Anatolian Fault system in the area. The integration of thermochronologic data with preexisting structural data point to the existence of a system of major E-W-trending structural discontinuities active at least from the Late Oligocene. In the Early Pliocene, inception of the present-day North Anatolian Fault system in the Marmara region occurred by reactivation of these older tectonic structures.

Abstract:
The analysis of apatite fission tracks is applied to the study of the syn- and post-collisional thermochronological evolution of a vast area that includes the Eastern Pontides, their continuation in the Lesser Caucasus of Georgia (Adjara-Trialeti zone) and northern Armenia, and the eastern Anatolian Plateau. The resulting database is then integrated with the data presented by Okay et al. (2010) for the Bitlis Pütürge Massif, i.e. the western portion of the Bitlis-Zagros collision zone between Arabia and Eurasia. The mid-Miocene exhumation episode along the Black Sea coast and Lesser Caucasus of Armenia documented in this dissertation mirrors the age of collision between the Eurasian and Arabian plates along the Bitlis suture zone. We argue that tectonic stresses generated along the Bitlis collision zone were transmitted northward across eastern Anatolia and focused (i) at the rheological boundary between the Anatolian continental lithosphere and the (quasi)oceanic lithosphere of the Black Sea, and (ii) along major pre-existing discontinuities like the Sevan-Akera suture zone. The integration of both present-day crustal dynamics (GPS-derived kinematics and distribution of seismicity) and thermochronological data presented in this paper provides a comparison between short- and long-term deformation patterns for the entire eastern Anatolia-Transcaucasian region. Two successive stages of Neogene deformation of the northern foreland of the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone can be inferred. (i) Early and Middle Miocene: continental deformation was concentrated along the Arabia-Eurasia (Bitlis) collision zone but tectonic stress was also transferred northward across eastern Anatolia, focusing along the eastern Black Sea continent-ocean rheological transition and along major pre-existing structural discontinuities. (ii) Since Late-Middle Miocene time the westward translation of Anatolia and the activation of the North and Eastern Anatolian Fault systems have reduced efficient northward stress transfer.

Rice, Samuel P. "Role of a Late Cretaceous volcanic arc and related units in tectonic assembly of the Tethyan Suture Zone, Central and Eastern Pontides, North Turkey." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/11311.

Abstract:
The Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture zone (IAEZ) in the Central and the Eastern Pontides, N Turkey comprises a stack of mainly Upper Cretaceous-Early Tertiary thrust sheets that record the development of: 1) a subduction-accretion complex; 2) a rifted continental margin volcanic arc and associated fore-arc basin, and 3) a backarc basin and its sedimentary fill. Alternative tectonic models are considered in this thesis in the light of structural, sedimentary, igneous geochemical and palaeontological evidence. A tectonostratigraphic revision of the Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary Neotethyan units in the Central and Eastern Pontides, combined with new biostratigraphic ages is used to constrain the timing of events associated with the assembly of the suture zone. All of the Late Cretaceous Neotethyan units exhibit a pervasive north-vergent shear. The age of north vergent deformation is constrained by the oldest overlying sediments (Kadikizi Formation and Sipikör Formation) as pre-Eocene. Large-scale southward thrusting followed, forming the present thrust stack. Whole-rock geochemical analyses of basic igneous rocks obtained by X-ray fluorescence indicate the presence of a volcanic arc within the suture zone. The geochemistry of the Neotethyan ophiolites (found to the north of the arc units in both areas) suggests they may represent emplaced backarc basin lithosphere. Screens of metamorphic rocks within the ophiolite in the Eastern Pontides, together with geochemical evidence for a partially enriched mantle source of arc volcanic rocks in the Central Pontides suggest that the arc-backarc system formed by rifting of the continental margin of Eurasia. Using petrographic evidence thick (<1500 m) sedimentary successions found within the suture zone are interpreted as arc apron, forearc, backarc and syn-collisional basins respectively. It is inferred that Neotethys was subducted northwards beneath the Eurasian margin associated with oceanwards trench-retreat, development of a volcanic arc and a backarc basin during Late Cretaceous time.

Abstract:
The study in object gives a synchronical description of the pontic Greek language (dialect of xaldhia) spoken in Greece since 1924 by exchanged populations from eastern turkey. The work is divided in three sections : 1) general introduction to the pontic speaking group, 2)descriptive grammar of the language, 3) an extent sample of the corpus, with translation and comments. - the introductive section gives short historical survevy of the pontic area, with an exposition of the field-work conditions. - the grammatical section describes first the phonological structures and, after that, the morpho-syntactic structures of pontic. The latter begins with the description of the morphology of n phrases and of the v phrases. The work gives a very particular attention about the aspectual system and the relations between syntactic structures and enonciative markers. The last chapter looks upon the patterns of spatial markers, which are a rather original feature of the language. - The work ends with a corpus constituted by several texts exemplifying the main grammatical rules explained above. Besides their intrinsic linguistic weight, the texts are also important by giving basic informations about crucial issues of pontic society and they give the possibility to sketch out the socio-historical context of the described language

Abstract:
This thesis is to my knowledge the first full-length examination of Evagrian apatheia. Chapter One contextualises Evagrian apatheia by outlining Evagrius' cosmology and anthropology. Attention is drawn to the centrality within them of the distinction be-tween unstable and stable movement and to Evagrius' characterisation of apatheia and empatheia in these terms. Apatheia, as the stable movement of the soul, is noted to be the foundation for the transformative contemplation by means of which the fallen nous re-ascends to union with God. The anthropology section describes Evagrius' understanding of the nous, soul, body and heart. Chapter Two examines the psychology and phenomenology of empatheia. Section One focuses upon the logismoi, discussing what Evagrius means by the term logismos, noting the inherence of pathos to the logismoi, explaining his concept of the 'matter' of the logismoi and discussing his eightfold classification of 'most generic logismoi'. Section Two focuses upon pathos, discussing the meaning of the term within Greek philosophy, how Origen understands it and how Evagrius himself understands it. It then discusses the cognitive 'building blocks' of the logismoi, the empathē noēmata and the arousal of pathos. Section Three describes the phenomenology of empatheia. Chapter Three establishes that the subject of apatheia is the tripartite soul in its entirety, then adduces evidence for apatheia's being the stable movement of the soul. It then dis-cusses Evagrius' spiritual characterisations of apatheia – first as death and resurrection and then as love and knowledge, the latter including practical moral knowledge as well as knowledge of transcendent realities. The holistic, embodied nature of spiritual knowledge as understood by Evagrius is emphasised, as is the inseparability of knowledge from love. His understanding of apatheia is shown to be profoundly Christian, and in particular Pauline. Following a discussion of how apatheia is attained, the chapter concludes with a summary description of apatheia as understood by Evagrius.

Abstract:
In the rainy Pontic mountains (Northeast of Turkey) people sing and dance at the sound of the kemençe, a tiny three stringed fiddle. Through fieldwork in those mountains, the purpose of this dissertation will be to describe what would be called a “communal use” of music: a musical tradition not understood as art (the creation of artists) but as a common within a certain community. From this observation, the goal will also be to understand the logics of folklorisation and commercialization at work in Turkish music since a century

Abstract:

The goals of the thesis: 1. Determine the physiological morphological and biochemical parameters of the dolphins’ blood with regard to their age and sex. 2. Determine the influence of the size of the pools on the respiratory rate of dolphin females and calves during the postnatal period. 3. Analyze the diseases affecting dolphins and the frequency of their occurance. 4. Study morphological and biochemical changes in dolphins blood parameters with regard to the diseases. 5. Identify the causes of death through pathological, anatomical, histopathological and microbiological examinations. The research has broadened the scientific knowledge about the Black sea dolphins’ (Tursiops truncatus ponticus) physiological characteristics and pathological conditions. It has been found out that the size of a pool has influence over the Black sea dolphin females and calves' respiratory rate as well as behaviour. Bearing in mind that there are genetic differences among other Tursiops truncatus dolphins, in the current research healthy Black sea afalins’ blood physiological morphological and biochemical parameters have been identified with regard to their age and sex. It is the first time in Lithuania when the frequencies of... [to full text]

Abstract:
John Cassian is an Eastern-educated monk writing in the early fifth century for the monks of Gaul and is crucial to the development of Western monasticism through the transmission of Greek ascetic ideas to the Latin West. He is heavily influenced by the teachings of Evagrius Ponticus, a prolific late fourth-century Egyptian monk crucial to the development of Christian mysticism; however, there has been no clear line drawn between the influence of Evagrius and Cassian's own originality. While Cassian uses Evagrian asceticism to the fullest, he nevertheless places it onto a divergent theological foundation which fundamentally alters that inherited asceticism. Evagrius' asceticism is shaped by his anthropology, cosmology, soteriology, and eschatology - all of which are based on his understanding of Creation and Christology. The monk working through Evagrius' asceticism sees the world and all the divisions in it - e.g. body/soul, human/angel/demon, vice/virtue - as a temporary construct which facilitates the eventual obliteration of all divisions through salvation - including divisions between good and evil. Cassian, however, writes twenty years after Evagrius' death and in a changed theological atmosphere, in which Evagrius' basic premises have become more controversial. Cassian is able to work an ascetic program previously defined by Evagrian theology into a legitimate and coherent asceticism based on a different understanding of Creation. This resembles Evagrius' asceticism to such an extent, that he has been called "merely a Latin translator". However, through fleshing out and comparing Cassian's understanding of the practical, the eight principal vices, the spiritual battle, and the contemplative life, it becomes clear that Cassian has a fundamentally different understanding of Creation and Christology, and this changes the relationship between body and soul, created and Creator, and corruption and salvation - all fundamental areas in an effective and coherent asceticism. Therefore, although the frame of his asceticism is Evagrian, the theological underpinnings of that asceticism create a vastly different experience for the monk through a different definition of humanity and the relationship between created and Creator.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The process of drug discovery is long and tedious. Besides, it is relatively inefficient in terms of hit rate. The identification of candidates through experimental testing is expensive and requires extensive data on the mechanisms of the target protein in order to develop efficient assays. Virtual screening can considerably accelerate the process by quickly evaluating large databases of compounds and determining the most likely to bind to a target. Some success stories have emerged in the field over the last few years. The objectives of this work were first, to compare common tools and strategies for structure-based virtual screening, and second, to apply those tools to actual target proteins implied notably in carcinogenesis. In order to evaluate the docking and scoring programs available, the protein kinase GSK3 and a test set of known ligands were used as a model to perform methodological studies. In particular the influence of the flexibility of the protein was explored via relaxed structures of the receptor or the insertion of torsions on the side chains of residues located in the binding site. Studies concerning the automatic generation of 3D structures for the ligands and the use of consensus scoring also provided insights on the usability of these tools while performing a virtual screening.Virtual screening of the human protein Pontin, an ATPase implied in tumor cell growth for which no inhibitors were known, allowed the prioritization of compounds from commercial databases. These compounds were tested in an enzymatic assay via a collaboration, and led to the identification of four molecules capable of inhibiting the ATPase activity of Pontin. Additional screens of in-house oriented databases also provided at least one innovative inhibitor for this protein. On the contrary, a study of the human PLA2-X, a phospholipase that requires a Ca2+ atom to bind to its active site in order to catalyze the hydrolysis of its substrate, revealed the limits of our docking tools that could not handle the metal ion and the need for new tools

The purpose of this work is to delimit the functions of the Roman priests in charge of resolving officially the prodigial crisis which punctuate the history of republican Rome, in order to sketch out an overall view of the procuration of prodigies in Rome : who were the people involved, which rites were used and, particulary, what form could take, in fact, a so complex procedure ?. .

Abstract:
Nakamura and Katakura (1995) suggested that the brainstem neuronal circuitry required for mastication pattern generation is set up in series (i.e.: one nucleus relaying onto the next nucleus in a chain-like fashion). In their model, the ventral region of the midline reticular formation (RF) formed the first stage. This was driven tonically by contralateral monosynaptic corticobulbar inputs. In their turn, these neurons drove neurons in the more dorsal nucleus gigantocellularis to become phasically active. These were thought to project to pre-motor neurons in the caudal parvocellular RF that then projected to MoV. Our data revealed that cortical information reached both dorsal and ventral medial brainstem areas in the nucleus Pontis Caudalis (nPC) with similar latencies of about 5.8ms. Thus, we suggest a model that cortical information enters the brainstem in a parallel fashion, and that cortical inputs are not preferentially distributed to ventral nPC. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
This work is a critical edition and presentation of the memoires du sieur de pontis (memoirs of the sieur de Pontis). These first memoirs written in port-royal, were published in 1676 and then overshadowed by the memoires de monsieur de Pontis, published in 1678. In 1657-8, the writer, du Fossé, a follower of Antoine Lemaistre, encouraged the officer Pontis to relate his life in camps and at court in order to discern how god led him to port-royal. The success in 1676 indicates the qualities of this account of actions, in which the spoken word is assimilated into the written word. In 1678, the publishers corrected oversights and made many concerted changes which gave rise to a new project. The unified, sustained tone met with requirements of the classic taste. Questions arise: why publish a text in 1676, calling for such extensive work two years later? The importance port-royal attached to these atypical memoirs, to their rapid publishing and then to their perfection, invites conjecture: in these last days of peace within the church, this account of conversion may be an indirect, self-interested tribute to the "war king". It is at any rate aimed at the old nobility, the ally which honored Port-Royal and often followed its direction

Pontin/Reptin complexes offer new therapeutic opportunities despite the fact they are still notwell known. In addition to their ATPase activity, multimeric complexes of Pontin/Reptin were reported as hélicases able to unwind nucleic acids. Molecular modeling techniques are a powerful tool to study proteins, both a docking and molecular dynamics were applied.Considering the size of a twelve sub-units complex, simulations taking into account all atoms were too expensive in terms of computational costs. A mesoscopic approach, called coarse grain, was used to reduce the number of particles. The calculation time saved with this model allowed the study of Pontin/Reptin complexes in the presence of diverse partners like small ligands (ATP or ADP) and/or nucleic acids. Reverse transformation from coarse-grain to the atomic level led to a DNA double helix opening along to the single strands rearrangement.Several mechanistic hypotheses for the complex helicase activity were formulated from these results

Abstract:
I am interested in working on the poetics of exile and of death in Les Tristes et les Pontiques, a series of collections composed by Ovid during his nine-year exile. This study is concerned with the ovidian poetic discourse which oscillates between death and the transcendence of death through art. The theme of exile as related to death, which is a common theme in Modern literature, is, in fact, not a modern invention. Our poet, for instance, stands for evidence for this fact since he developed this theme in his two collections. This theme has drawn the interest of Sulmonese specialists. However, the question has been tackled only within the framework of punctual approaches which briefly deal with the question and could not give credit to the complexity and the originality of Ovid’s exile writing. My thesis purports to fill up this gap. In my opinion, the main contribution of Ovid’s poetic work lies in the ambivalence of the relationship between exile and death. I am concerned with three main points: lexicon, themes and a study of intertextuality and autotextuality, which are present in every section of the thesis. The first section deals with intertextuality in Les Tristes et les Pontiques as well as the various elements which reflect the impact of exile on Ovid’s writing. The second section aims at shedding light on the characteristics of the universe of the ovidian banishment, in its most concrete aspect, as reflected in his poetic discourse. The third section is devoted to the study of the ambivalence of the poetics of exile and death: from death to the immortality of a rescuing art. Decline and death affect his body as well as his spirit and his creative capacities. Yet, it is through art that he reaches immortality and that his pain is rendered universal

In this thesis, I investigate the complex and contradictory dimensions of the settlement of the Greek diaspora originating from the Soviet Union in Greece since 1985. This analysis learns from this group's historical journey during the last two centuries. The historical departure of analysis leads to an analysis of the two models of this group's settlement in Greece. On one hand, a state strategy of controlled settlement in Trace took place, with important demeographic and socio-cultural consequences for this peripheral geographical region. On the other hand , a voluntary settlement of this group in the broader capital territory of Athens led to the development of novel forms of residential and peripheral urban spaces. .

Abstract:
Background: Norepinephrine and glutamate are among several neurotransmitters implicated in the neuropathology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Glia deficits have also been demonstrated in people with MDD, and glia are critical modulators of central glutamatergic transmission. We studied glia in men with MDD in the region of the brain (locus coeruleus; LC) where noradrenergic neuronal cell bodies reside and receive glutamatergic input. Methods: The expression of 3 glutamate-related genes (SLC1A3, SLC1A2, GLUL) concentrated in glia and a glia gene (GFAP) were measured in postmortem tissues from men with MDD and from paired psychiatrically healthy controls. Initial gene expression analysis of RNA isolated from homogenized tissue (n = 9-10 pairs) containing the LC were followed by detailed analysis of gene expressions in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes (n = 6-7 pairs) laser captured from the LC region. We assessed protein changes in GFAP using immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting (n = 7-14 pairs). Results: Astrocytes, but not oligodendrocytes, demonstrated robust reductions in the expression of SLC1A3 and SLC1A2, whereas GLUL expression was unchanged. GFAP expression was lower in astrocytes, and we confirmed reduced GFAP protein in the LC using immunostaining methods. Limitations: Reduced expression of protein products of SLC1A3 and SLC1A2 could not be confirmed because of insufficient amounts of LC tissue for these assays. Whether gene expression abnormalities were associated with only MDD and not with suicide could not be confirmed because most of the decedents who had MDD died by suicide. Conclusion: Major depressive disorder is associated with unhealthy astrocytes in the noradrenergic LC, characterized here by a reduction in astrocyte glutamate transporter expression. These findings suggest that increased glutamatergic activity in the LC occurs in men with MDD.

Abstract:
The thesis studies the presence and influence of the Iranian peoples and tribes in the Pontus region from the origins to the fall of the Achaemenid Empire. While the sedentary Iranian people have been the center of attention, this work focuses firstly on the nomadic Iranian peoples originally living in western Siberia and who moved later in the north-Pontic region. In the absence of Cimmerian and Scythian written documents, the first part of thesis attempts to reconstruct a historical narrative of the migration and invasion of these people through the references made to them in ancient Greek and Assyrian texts, as well as by archaeological evidence. Modern debate about the Cimmerians’ linguistic and ethnic affiliation continues at a lively pace, for the existing documentation is both sparse and full of contradictions. Nonetheless, the inclination today is to consider them as an Iranian people. The second part of thesis traces the history of Scythian tribes in the North Pontic region. The first Scythian legend of origin, as related by Herodotus is studied and it is suggested that this legend incorporates typical features of Iranian legends of origin. The third part of the thesis studies the history of Pontus regions in the Achaemenid period and attempts to evaluate the impact of Persian and Iranian presence there. This part discusses the political status of the Pontus regions within the Achaemenid empire and attempts to determine the nature and the level of political incorporation of these regions into Achaemenid administrative organization. The work concludes by reviewing the written, archeological, artistic and various other sorts of evidence which suggests that there was not only a permanent presence of Persians and Iranians of the imperial diaspora, but also a considerable impact by the Achaemenid political and cultural influence in the Pontus region. This was due to the intense intercultural exchange between these Iranians and local populations

Abstract:
What is a wetland? What does this category imply? Is it different from a land which is wet? This thesis addresses these questions through a study of environmental conflicts in two protected wetlands in Agro Pontino, Italy. This region, 70 kilometres south of Rome, was affected between the 1920s and the 1930s, by one of the most important operations of land reclamation of that time, conducted by the fascist regime which drained the largest marshland in Italy, i.e. the Pontine Marshes. Based on fieldwork in protected wetlands considered as the remnants of the Pontine Marshes, the thesis includes the analysis of various original case studies, such as the activities of Environmental Interpretation and farming, among others. Moreover, it discloses archive records that cast new light on the social and environmental context of the Pontine Marshes. The thesis explores how farmers and conservationists relate with a particular kind of environment, namely wetlands in conservation areas; their relations with non-humans; their different reading of the history and evolution of these landscapes and the connections between these aspects and the conflicts affecting these areas. These conflicts concern different ideas of what a wetland should be and the appropriate practices aimed at implementing those ideas. The research, which is influenced by the work of Tim Ingold, challenges the established notion of wetland, based on a topographic and spatial understanding of the world, suggesting that wetlands are patterns characterized by movements, tasks and activities: entanglements of innumerable life-lines traced by human and non-human beings in the accomplishment of their tasks. It is in this entanglement which politics emerge, conflicts flourish and life goes on. Accordingly, I argue that following these life-lines and exploring what I call the geography of the meshwork, can disclose new interpretative perspectives to understand environmental conflicts.

Grigoletto, Aude. Thesis, Bordeaux 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012BOR21946/document.

Abstract:
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the main primary cancer of the liver and is often associated with poor prognosis. Our team has demonstrated that Reptin and Pontin, two AA+ ATPases, are overexpressed in HCC compared to normal liver. Moreover this overexpression is also associated with poor prognosis. In the course of my PhD, I demonstrated that shRNA-mediated silencing of Reptin is sufficient to inhibit tumor growth and even can promote their regression in xenografted mice. These encouraging results suggest that Reptin might represent a novel therapeutic target in HCC. As the use of siRNA as therapeutic tools is still debated, the targeting of Reptin enzymatic activity might represent a more relevant approach to impair its functions. To this end I first proposed to determine the involvement of Reptin ATPase activity in HCC oncogenesis. My results show that ATPase inactive Reptin mutants (D299N and E300G) play dominant negative roles toward Reptin functions and are unable to complement for the depletion of endogenous Reptin, thereby leading to a significant decrease of cell growth and to a significant increase of apoptosis in HuH7 and Hep3B cells. These results show that Reptin’s ATPase activity is necessary for HCC cell growth and survival. Moreover, using a transcriptomic approach that compared gene expression upon siRNA-mediated Reptin or Pontin silencing, we identified specific genes whose expression is under the control of those proteins and whose functions might provide mechanistic explanation to Reptin’s involvement in HCC. Collectively, the results obtained during my PhD thesis have characterized the contribution of Reptin ATPase activity to HCC growth and development and might represent a founding step in the understanding of Reptin’s biology in cancer development

Abstract:

Jang, Jih Lirng. "Participating in God : a pilot study of a novel intervention for depression based on the spirituality of Evagrius Ponticus." Thesis, Durham University, 2018. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12937/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has three parts. The first is to investigate the spirituality of Evagrius Ponticus to see whether it is suitable for constructing a spiritual model to meet the challenge of depression. The second is to translate Evagrian teachings and practices of prayer into a novel, manual-based intervention to help people suffering from depression, which is designated as the 3R (reconnect, reorient, reintegrate) programme. The third is to report on the design and execution of a qualitative pilot study to test the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of this intervention. The results of the pilot study demonstrated improvements in symptom reduction and clinical benefits. The overall evidence suggests that the 3R intervention does hold therapeutic promise for alleviating depression. The 3R programme is believed to be the first manualised spiritual intervention for depression, and the first theologically-based Christian intervention.
