In the greater metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil, close to 20 million people share water resources across multiple uses, from industry to recreation to basic household use. These resources have come under increasing strain due to urban expansion, poor planning, and, more recently, climate change. Conflicts among uses and their underlying principles are increasingly adjudicated in courts, with the Ministério Público (Public Prosecutor's Office) acting as a key advocate for both human rights and environmental protection. As legal interventions become more common in policy questions, how a

However, historically, favelas are represented as empty areas on official maps. On the one hand, this situation reinforces the persistent invisibility of these areas, on the other hand, it demonstrates the lack of information for interventions. The traditional topographic surveys in loco or even the surveys generated from aerophotogrammetric refunds are deficient for the representation of the morphological complexity of the favelas. Introduction: The development of breast cancer is heterogeneous and there are variations in its morphologic and biological characteristics. Several risk factors for breast cancer have already been identified, including the age group. It is wellestablished that the incidence of breast cancer increases from the age of 65. Older patients are more likely to have tumors which are positive estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (RP) and, HER2 negative, which are associated with better outcomes. In contrast, younger patients with triple-negative breast cancer and HER2 positive are associa

Introduction: Stroke is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Late complications, such as sexual dysfunction, have a direct impact on psychological and emotional aspects and directly affect the quality of life of these patients. Objectives and methods: We present a cross-sectional study that aimed to determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with ischemic stroke followed in the neurovascular outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, using the Male Sexual Quotient (MSQ) questionnaire. The MSQ can range from 0-100 points. Higher values indicate better s

Abstract:
How does the proximity to a metro station affect urban development in Latin America? While the literature assessing the causal impacts of transportation infrastructure has grown in recent years, only a few papers have focused on the effects of metro systems in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, and identifying the precise impacts of such investments is far from straightforward. We apply a Synthetic Difference-in-Differences (SDiD) approach to estimate the effects of the expansion of Line 5 of the São Paulo metro system in Brazil on land use and property features. Findings: On average, there was no systematic association between school reopening and COVID-19 incidence or mortality in So Paulo State, up to 12 weeks after reopening. This was also the case for schools in most vulnerable conditions. Aggregate mobility was already high before the school reopening and did not significantly increase afterwards. This paper demonstrates the range alternative central tendency measures for WTP produced under alternative parametric and nonparametric approaches using data gathered from a recent referendum CV survey that was conducted in Brazil to analyze a large, multi-phase water quality improvement project. This paper investigates the effects of political (mis)alignment on public service delivery when mandates are shared between state and local governments. We analyze sewage treatment policies in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Relying on difference-in-differences estimations, we establish a causal relationship between political alignment and higher sewage treatment provision. Conceptually, we find that, with uncertain local commitment and weakly enforceable local obligations, shared mandates lead to a moral hazard issue implying service under-provision. Our results show that political alignment

This technical paper argues that Monte Carlo risk analysis offers a more comprehensive and informative way to look at project risk ex-ante than the traditional (and often arbitrary), one-influence-at-atime sensitivity analysis approach customarily used in IDB analyses of economic feasibility. The case for probabilistic risk analysis is made using data from a project for cleaning up the Tietê river in São Paulo, Brazil. A number of ways to handle uncertainty about benefits are proposed, and their implications for the project acceptance decision and the consequent degree of presumed project risk
