Abstract:
AbstractThis essay examines the history of women’s exhibitions in Spain since the 1930s, considering said shows as a precedent for the first feminist exhibitions in the 1990s, and providing them with a context within their political time. This text delves in some of the projects curated by the author, in which she rescued a number of women artists who had been ignored by the usual histories of contemporary art –especially the female Pop artists from the 1970s– as pioneers of feminist art.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study we discuss the exploitation and exchange of variscite at Pico Centeno mining district during the Copper Age. X-ray fluorescence and diffraction (XRF and XRD, respectively) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses of the mineral recovered at Pico Centeno mining district provides a baseline mineral signature, which was then compared to other Iberian sources and beads from SW Iberian megalithic tombs. We found that the concentrations of trace elements don not allow establishing provenance of the beads, as traditionally claimed. Instead we found that different proportions of phosphate species, which results in P/Al ratios higher than 1, arose during the genesis of the variscite deposits, modifying the concentrations of PO4 3–, H2PO4– and HPO4 2–. Thus, the P/Al atomic ratio should be an indication of provenance as it is established during mineral genesis.

Abstract:
the critical karaoke project was a specific response to the endless parade of polls, lists and casual questions about ‘the greatest songs of all time’ – particularly to how that measure seems mismatched to pop, which bets everything on transitory pleasures, intensities, its own evanescence. a number of critics, scholars, poets and musicians were invited to the experience music project's annual pop conference in seattle, in the spring of 2004, to talk about any one song of their choosing, without making a case for its lasting worth, or cultural importance, truth, beauty, or any of the other high art values. they just had to take a song they had believed, once, for a minute or a decade, was the greatest song ever … and give an account of why they thought that, or how it felt to believe. one of the dreams was to ask for criticism under the sign of the top 40, not the canon. the other was to hear talented writers tell stories about songs, as they appeared in their daily lives. the trick was that all the participants were asked to tell their story in the span of time it took to listen to the song they had chosen – with the song playing behind them.

Abstract:
Abstract Since it was passed, the Clarity Act has been at the core of any secessionist debate in Canada and abroad. Although contested at home, the Clarity Act has earned worldwide prestige as the democratic standard that must be observed when a secessionist debate arises. In the last fifteen years Spain has experienced successive debates about the need to establish a mechanism of popular consultation to address secessionist claims in the Basque Country and Catalonia. Most political actors in favour of such consultations have expressed their will to import the Canadian Clarity Act as a tool to settle disputes on how to conduct a referendum. However, this deification of the Canadian example is, for the most part, based on a misreading of the Secession Reference, only taking into account certain passages while ignoring others. The emphasis tends to be made on the quantitative clear majority test, disregarding other factors. Hence, the aim of this paper is to study the causes of this deification of the Clarity Act in Spain, and its influence on the treatment of secessionist claims that the country is currently experiencing.

Abstract:
Abstract The question at hand is located at the intersection of EU law and national constitutional law, and aims to answer the following problem: namely, how to mitigate federal concerns in the context of infringement procedures and financial sanctions under art. 260 TFEU. This article approaches this question both from the perspective of the Commission and the Court of Justice, as well as from the vantage point of the central and regional governments involved. After analysing the composition of the financial sanctions, we cover the involvement of subnational entities in the infringements proceedings in six tiered Member States (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK) and the relevant national provisions for the partition of financial sanctions. The conclusions pertain to both the central and regional level and the EU institutions concerned, adhering to the multi-level relationship subjacent to this article.

Abstract:
Purpose In the past decade, urban tourism has increased worldwide as a result of the development of peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation platforms such as Airbnb, causing a major disruption to the tourism industry and urban space. The expansion of tourist accommodation in cities has motivated many governments to act, to control its effects and reduce conflicts between tourists and residents. The purpose of this paper is to identify the attractions that have motivated the concentration of P2P accommodation and its effects in specific areas of Valencia different from the historical centre: the Russafa and El Cabanyal-Canyamelar neighbourhoods. Design/methodology/approach The methodology used includes fieldwork and spatial analysis of factors such as the housing market, tourist attractions, local businesses and urban renewal policies. Findings The current spatial distribution pattern of tourist housing in Valencia is the result of the convergence of various factors: the initial presence of tourists in some areas; the evolution of certain aspects of the neighbourhood due to urban renewal; the concentration of tourist and leisure activities; the effects of the legal framework Originality/value Many researchers have addressed the effects of rising short-term rentals (STRs) in cities, but the causes of their concentration in specific neighbourhoods different from historical centres have not yet been sufficiently investigated. This research looks in depth at the urban causes and effects of the spatial distribution of tourist housing in Valencia, to anticipate possible future concentrations of STRs in other areas and to avoid gentrification. The methodology and results could be applied to other cities. The research implies a detailed and analysis of different aspects that act simultaneously such as the housing market, the evolution of the population and changes in the business.

Abstract:
Recent findings demonstrate that nutrition during the fetal and neonatal periods can affect the life span of an organism. Our previous studies in rodents using a maternal low protein diet have shown that limiting protein and growth during lactation [postnatal low protein (PLP group)] increases longevity, while in utero growth restriction (IUGR) followed by “catch up growth” (recuperated group) shortens life span. The aim of this study was to investigate mechanisms in early postnatal life that could underlie these substantial differences in longevity. At weaning, PLP animals had improved insulin sensitivity as suggested by lower concentrations of insulin required to maintain concentrations of glucose similar to those of the control group and significant upregulation of insulin receptor-β, IGF-1 receptor, Akt1, Akt2, and Akt phosphorylated at Ser 473 in the kidney. These animals also had significantly increased SIRT1 (mammalian sirtuin) expression. Expression of the antioxidant enzymes catalase, CuZnSOD, and glutathione peroxidase-1 was elevated in these animals. In contrast, recuperated animals had a significantly increased fasting glucose concentration, while insulin levels remained comparable to those of the control group suggesting relative insulin resistance. MnSOD expression was increased in these animals. These data suggest that early nutrition can lead to alterations in insulin sensitivity and antioxidant capacity very early in life, which may influence life span.

Gabriel, Clara Gonzalez de Miranda. "Equipo Crónica : a case study on the art work as an "object of criticism"." Thesis, McGill University, 1998. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=21211.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper will look back on the work of Equipo Cronica, who worked between 1964--1980, to reveal a production of art that centered on issues of originality and value that were grounded in attempts at social activism and a redefinition of the role of art vis-a-vis society. To achieve their goals, I will argue and describe how the two man team of artists used serialism, objectivity, hybridity, appropriation of mass media iconography and techniques, and parody to produce something that was neither an art object nor an ordinary object, but an object of criticism. The historical relevancy of such an art lies in its claims of participating in a political critique of the culture industry controlled by the oppressive Franco regime, and its wary outlook on the rapid modernization of Spain into the neo-capitalist state it is today within the multinational world order.
The relevance of such an examination lies in how their intentions to create a new relationship between art and society is still pertinent today in modern Spain. Since the death of Franco in 1975 there has been a feeling in Spain that the eyes of the world have been on its new democracy, leading to a campaign, led until recently by the Socialist government, to prove Spain is a modern state that has recuperated from 40 years of isolation. It has tried to demonstrate that it is progressive, not only economically and technologically, but culturally. Over the last twenty years a veritable culture industry has boomed in Spain which has been generously backed by its federal and regional governments. As Spain zealously and rapidly finds its place in the globalized multinational world order, I will demonstrate that the issues of identity pertinent to Equipo Cronica, and the tactics they used to address it, can still contribute a critical position to present-day discussions.

Abstract:
AbstractThe role of hypoxia in renal disease and injury has long been suggested but much work still remains, especially as it relates to human translation. Invasive pO2 probes are feasible in animal models but not for human use. In addition, they only provide localized measurements. Histological methods can identify hypoxic tissue and provide a spatial distribution, but are invasive and allow only one-time point. Blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) MRI is a noninvasive method that can monitor relative oxygen availability across the kidney. It is based on the inherent differences in magnetic properties of oxygenated vs. deoxygenated hemoglobin. Presence of deoxyhemoglobin enhances the spin–spin relaxation rate measured using a gradient echo sequence, known as R2* (= 1/T2*). While the key interest of BOLD MRI is in the application to humans, use in preclinical models is necessary primarily to validate the measurement against invasive methods, to better understand physiology and pathophysiology, and to evaluate novel interventions. Application of MRI acquisitions in preclinical settings involves several challenges both in terms of logistics and data acquisition. This section will introduce the concept of BOLD MRI and provide some illustrative applications. The following sections will discuss the technical issues associated with data acquisition and analysis. This chapter is based upon work from the COST Action PARENCHIMA, a community-driven network funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) program of the European Union, which aims to improve the reproducibility and standardization of renal MRI biomarkers. This introduction chapter is complemented by two separate chapters describing the experimental procedure and data analysis.

Abstract:
Chapter 6 commences in 1342, with a new front opening against the bishop of Porto in the battle for jurisdiction over that city, and with Alfonso XI facing an ultimatum from the pope. We read of Pedro de Casis, the king of Castile’s man at Avignon, and his machinations, papal provision, and the royal civil service. The chapter moves on to the pope’s investiture of Luis de la Cerda with the Canary Islands, questions concerning the identity of Alfonsus de Hispania, and the 1344 siege and capture of Algeciras. A future French pope’s sermons are shown to be doctored by a Spanish amanuensis intent on proving the supremacy of the king of France, ‘except for the king of Spain’. The revised statutes for the archbishop of Braga’s chapel are considered. Finally, Guillelmus de Rivoforcato’s heirs energetic but failed attempts to salvage some of their putative inheritance are described.

The chapter explores the development of Elastic 3D Spaces as a research group, its span of inquiry, along with developments to date, using old and new technologies, including stereoscopy and augmented and virtual reality. Elastic 3D Spaces alludes to the space in front of a screen where images appear when using stereo to create 3D, where objects pop out of the screen. The perception of depth stretches if the viewer can move, hence elastic space. The chapter explores art projects whilst positioning the subject area involving both arts and science researchers and explains the topics it covers. Elastic 3D Spaces is interested in comparisons between 3D experiences and stereo 3D experiences from projection to virtual reality.

Abstract:
This chapter contains instructions for helping clients with ADHD to reduce distractibility. Clients are taught to gauge their attention span, the length of time that they can reasonably expect themselves to work on a boring or difficult task, and then to break tasks down into smaller chunks that will likely take that amount of time. The chapter also contains information on teaching the “distractibility delay” skill. The client sets an amount of time during which he or she commits to staying on task. If distracting thoughts pop into the client’s head during that time, he or she writes them down. After the agreed-upon length of time, the client can decide if they are tasks that need to be done immediately, tasks that can go onto the task list, or tasks that are pure distractions and can be discarded. A case vignette illustrates the use of these techniques.

In Chapter 8 all the strands of evidence are drawn together within an overarching synthetic analysis of patterns of human activity through time, which are then interpreted in terms of the development, use, and past experience of Sha Po’s multi-period cultural landscape. The shifting patterns of human activity during the 6,500-year span of the study also permit the changing backbeach landform to be modelled as it expanded westward through time. Social landscape reconstructions, aided by artist’s impression drawings, focus in particular on activities evidenced during the Bronze Age, Six-Dynasties-Tang period, and Qing to early twentieth century.

Abstract:
This story could begin with a fictional horse named Velvet, or perhaps behind the keyboards in a smoky bar in Halmstad, and it might have had a very different ending were it not for the unlikely excursion of a few medicinal chemists to the exotic southern part of the periodic table into the realm of the Lanthanoids. One or two generations of movie aficionados and the celebrity-hungry populace were upset, intrigued, or just plain nosey when another chapter in what seemed to be the never-ending story of Elizabeth Taylor, last of the great Hollywood divas, was revealed in February 1997. Dame Elizabeth had been diagnosed with a brain tumour just before her 65th birthday and was due for an operation in a few weeks. As it turned out, this non-malignant tumour, which was easily removed by surgery, was probably the least of her medical problems, but when singer Marie Fredriksson fainted in her home in 2002 and the causes were revealed to be a potentially deadly cancer tumour, the situation was radically different. The fate of the 44-year-old, half of the immensely successful pop duo Roxette, affected a different generation to those who had been following the career of Elizabeth Taylor since the 1940s, and was also deeply unsettling since the victim was a woman in the prime of her life with young children. Brain tumours are difficult to deal with—you cannot just break open the skull and poke around until you find them, there far too many sensitive connections and devices that may be broken. Their precise location is a key issue, and for that you need to look inside the head without opening it. The most powerful method is what scientists call Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging, known to the public simply as MRI as the little word ‘nuclear’ may have associations that would be unhelpful in situations in which calm and composure may be necessary, both for the patient and relatives. Looking inside human bodies has been of tremendous importance for medicine, but has also meant business opportunities, both for the unscrupulous and the upstanding.

Abstract:
Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has remained preoccupied with questions of how globalization shapes identity from his art-house success Y Tu Mamá También(2002) to his Hollywood-financed films Children of Men(2006) and Gravity(2013). Perhaps the most overlooked project in Cuarón’s filmography is his 1998 adaptation of Great Expectations, which shifts the narrative to the Gulf Coast and New York City in the 20th century. Though failing to connect with critics and audiences upon its release, the film’s renegotiation of the imperial centre and focus on a setting once colonized by Spain makes the adaptation a cogent commentary on immigration and class mobility within a globalized United States. By paring down the narrative to focus on Pip and Estella’s romantic and sexual liaisons, Cuarón exposes how the waning Empire embodied by Ms. Havisham (now Dinsmoor) uses the young people’s emotions and sexuality to further its agency. Employing the camera’s seemingly objective gaze to dilute Pip’s first-person narration, Cuarón depicts his protagonist as a powerless spectator in the world around him whose status and sexuality are defined by Empire’s authority.1010

Abstract:
Cervical cancer is a leading cancer among women, being the second most gynecological cancers in the developing countries, accounting for about 6 million new cases every year and 3.5 million deaths. The Cervical cancer is easily detectable by simple screening tests, like visual inspection methods, pap smear examination, and the recent HPV DNA test methods. If the precancer conditions are diagnosed, treatment can be done by ablation or excisional methods. The women can be followed by periodic cervical biopsy examinations, ideally once in 6 months for 3 years. If, at the end of 3 years, there is no evidence of cervical precancer, then the women will not develop invasive cancer stages. The HPV vaccination of adult and adolescent girls, offer more than 90% protection against Cervical Cancer. Thus, Cervical cancers are early detectable, effectively treatable and successfully preventable. The author, having been the Principal Investigator for one of the largest Cervical Cancer Screening programs in India, atAmbillikai, Tamil Nadu, India, during 2000–2007, which was in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer – IARC / WHO. The program was successful in reducing the Incidence Rate of Cervical Cancer by 25% and Mortality Rate due to Cervical Cancer, by 35% in a span of 5 years. From the experiences of this “Proof of Concept” project, the author has advocated, “SMASH” strategy of Raj©, for Cervical Cancer Elimination by 2030, which is deliberated in detail, i n this chapter. Hope that, this will serve as a Global Public Health Treatise, for the health care planners and providers in particular and the community at large, worldwide.

Abstract:
In Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), teachers often complain about the quality of service offered by the Ministry of Education (MOE). They generally describe it as poor because of the delays incurred during the processing of most requests. Poor service to customers (teachers) of an organisation implies a productivity deficiency. At MOE, requests made by teachers can turn into long waiting for the process to be completed or issues to be resolved. This has become a burden to teachers who are left to suffer the consequences as it appears little is being done to improve the system. To investigate the challenges associated with productivity issues and quality management (QM) practices at the MOE Port of Spain (POS) Office, a recent study was undertaken comprising of site visits and interviews with stakeholders (MOE staff and teachers) with the aid of online surveys. This paper presents the main findings of the survey, aiming to explore issues concerning QM processes, and identify the factors affecting the provision of quality services to teachers. The current quality culture and leadership styles of the MOE-POS Office would be addressed. The paper concludes by underlining the mechanisms of employee empowerment enabling a path to attain productivity/quality improvement, specifically for processing common requests or resolving issues at the MOE-POS Office.

Abstract:
Two dimensional (2-D) axisymmetric finite element models (FEMs) are often used as a simplified means of modeling cylindrical nozzles that intersect cylindrical pressure vessels. An axisymmetric model represents the vessel as a spherical shell rather than a cylindrical shell. Therefore, analysts must correct the stresses predicted by the 2-D model to account for the three dimensional (3-D) effects caused by the true nozzle geometry, which are not represented by the 2-D axisymmetric simplification. This paper presents total stress correction factors for the nozzle blend radius region of Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) Feedwater, Core Spray and Recirculation Inlet nozzle geometries. The correction factors are defined by taking the ratio of the total hoop stress from the 3-D nozzle FEM to the total hoop stress obtained from the 2-D nozzle FEM. Eighteen (18) separate nozzle designs were evaluated. These cases are considered to span the range of dimensions expected for General Electric type BWR-2 through BWR-6 Feedwater, Core Spray, and Recirculation Inlet nozzles.

Abstract:
Our previous studies have shown that stress intensity factors (SIFs) are influenced considerably from the presence of the Bauschinger Effect (BE) in thick-walled pressurized cracked cylinders. For some types of pressure vessels, such as gun barrels, working in corrosive environment, in addition to acute temperature gradients and repetitive high-pressure impulses, erosions can be practically induced. Those erosions cause stress concentration at the bore, where cracks can readily initiate and propagate. In this study, The BE on the SIFs will be investigated for a crack emanating from an erosion’s deepest point in a multiply eroded autofrettaged, pressurized thick-walled cylinder. A commercial finite element package, ANSYS, was employed to perform this type of analysis. A two-dimensional model, analogous to the authors’ previous studies, has been adopted for this new investigation. Autofrettage with and without BE, based on von Mises yield criterion, is simulated by thermal loading and the SIFs are determined by the nodal displacement method. The SIFs are evaluated for a variety of relative crack lengths, a0/t = 0.01–0.45 emanating from the tip of the erosion of different geometries including (a) semi-circular erosions of relative depths of 1–10 percent of the cylinder’s wall thickness, t; (b) arc erosions for several dimensionless radii of curvature, r′/t = 0.05–0.4; and (c) semi-elliptical erosions with ellipticities of d/h = 0.5–1.5, and erosion span angle, α, from 6 deg to 360 deg. The effective SIFs for relatively short cracks are found to be increased by the presence of the erosion and further increased due to the BE, which may result in a significant decrease in the vessel’s fatigue life. Deep cracks are found to be almost unaffected by the erosion, but are considerably affected by BE.

Abstract:
The energy supply of the future in the EU will be a mix of renewable, fossil and nuclear. There are 145 nuclear power reactors in operation in 15 out of the 27 EU countries, with installed power ∼132 GWe. The age distribution of current nuclear power plants in EU is such that in 2010 most of them will have passed 20-years and approximately 25% of them 30 years of age. The decrease of energy supply from nuclear generated electricity can not always be compensated in a reliable and economical way within a short time span. For this situation utilities may be keen to upgrade the reactor output and /or to ask their regulatory bodies for longer term operation. Under the research financed in the Euratom part of the Research Directorate (RTD) of the European Commission several projects explicitly address the safe long term operation of nuclear power plants (NULIFE, LONGLIFE) and the topics proposed in the 2010 call explicitly address issues concerning component ageing, in particular non metallic components, i.e. instrumentation and cables (I&C) and concrete ageing. This paper presents an overview of the plans for long term operation (LTO) of nuclear power plants in the EU. Special emphasis is given on research activities on component ageing management and long term operation issues related to safety.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of large, high pressure Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage bullets has become a common, and often assumed safe, practice in the petrochemical industry. The Engineering Equipment and Materials Users Association (EEMUA) is an organization that attempted to address design aspects related to mounded or buried bullets. Publication No. 190 published by the EEMUA [1] became a standard practice in the industry. However, the design recommended, and therefore addressed, by Publication 190 is for bullets directly supported by soil (i.e. without saddle supports). However, it has been noticed by the authors that many users are requesting these storage bullets be supported by saddles resting on foundations in order to minimize the chance of unexpected settling and any motion of the bullets under ground. The large span of these bullets requires more than two saddles adding to the complexity of the design due to statically indeterminate construction, differential settlement and uneven supports. This paper focuses on major issues related to the design of such bullets. First, the loads induced by mound weight, pressure due to mound, and the loads due to longitudinal thermal expansion and soil resistance to this expansion is analyzed. Next, a method for calculating the multiple saddle reactions and bending moments at spans and supports is provided. A simplified method for assessing the effect of differential settlement between saddles is proposed.

"Vibration Tests of 3-Story Benchmark Structure With Three Semiactive Dampers." In ASME 2010 Pressure Vessels and Piping Division/K-PVP Conference. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2010-25360.

Full text
Abstract:
In a previous paper the authors developed a semiactive damper that generates electrical power, and carried out vibration tests using a 3-story benchmark structure at NCREE, Taiwan in 2006. At that time, the dampers were installed at 1st and 2nd floors. The damper has a large inertia mass by flywheel and controllable damping force by generator, and a load capacity of 30 kN. In the test, the damper at 1st floor was only controlled by Bang-bang control that was based on Lyapunov function. In this paper as the next step, in order to demonstrate more effectiveness of vibration suppression, the dampers are installed at all floors of the 3-story structure, and vibration tests using the same structure are carried out again in 2008. The control law which is proposed here is based on Lyapunov function or predictive switching control for all of damper at each floor. The structure has 9 m high, 3 m wide, 2 m span, 18 tons total weight. Several earthquake waves normalized to be 150 gal are inputted horizontally to the base by a shaking table, and the seismic responses of each floor are estimated quantitatively. It is obviously from the experimental results that the seismic reductions for acceleration and displacement in case of large inertia mass are much better than the case of small one, but control effect is decreasing. Because seismic reduction can be depended on a balance between inertial force and controllable damping force, and plus the one of the reason is time delay of the damper. At last, we can summarize that the semiactive damper is available for seismic isolation in practical use.

Full text
Abstract:
During years 2005–2006, a series of semi-large scale experiments on specimens containing underclad (embedded) crack were performed in NRI Rez. The experiments were performed within EU PHARE project EUROPAID/116529/D/SV/CZ, in cooperation with VTT, FNS, TVONS (Finland) and Tecnatom (Spain). The aim of the project was to investigate fracture mechanics properties of cladding, in particular, to establish the role of cladding in the fracture/failure process of the specimen, and based on obtained results to improve the current procedure for evaluation of integrity of WWER reactor pressure vessels. The specimens were manufactured from artificially aged material of decommissioned (not operated) reactor pressure vessel of WWER 440 Type NPP. Each of the specimens contained through-thickness crack embedded in the base material (with approx. 3 mm ligament separating the upper crack front from cladding), and was loaded by four-point-bending loading at room temperature. During loading, majority of specimens exhibited pop-ins followed by ductile tearing of cladding and final failure; only 3 specimens fractured through suddenly, without preceding pop-ins. Evaluation of the experiments concentrated on both process of cleavage fracture in base material and process of ductile tearing in cladding. In the presented paper, the results of experiments are in detail described, including photos from the experiments and photos taken with using high-speed video camera during some of experiments.

In ASME 2013 32nd International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2013-10419.

Full text
Abstract:
A general assumption in performing vortex-induced vibration (VIV) analysis of pipeline free spans is both ends of the free span are fixed and/or pinned in order to simplify computational simulations; however, DNV Recommended Practice F105 states that these boundary conditions must adequately represent the pipe-soil interaction and the continuality of the pipeline. A computational methodology is developed to determine the effects of pip-soil interaction at the ends of a free span. Three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations are performed by coupling the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes from STAR-CCM+ with the finite element analysis (FEA) codes from ABAQUS. These FSI simulations in combination with separate coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) simulations are modeled to mimic real word conditions by setting up boundary conditions to factor in the effects of pipe-soil interaction at the ends of the span. These simulations show a mitigation of overall stresses to the free spans; as a result, the integration of pipe-soil interaction in free span assessment may prove cost effective in the prevention of unnecessary corrective action.

Download (2417Kb) | Vorschau Abstract Biofilm-like properties can form on sea surfaces, but an understanding of the underlying processes leading to the development of these biofilms is not available. We used approaches to study the development of biofilm-like properties at the sea surface, i.e. the number, abundance and diversity of bacterial communities and phytoplankton, the accumulation of gel-like particles and dissolved tracers. During the expedition POS537 we used newly developed and free drifting mesocosms and performed incubation experiments. With these approaches we aim to investigate the role of light and UV radiation as well as the microbes themselves, which lead to the formation of biofilms. With unique microbial interactions and photochemical reactions, sea surface biofilms could be biochemical reactors with significant implications for ocean and climate research, e.g. with respect to the marine carbon cycle, diversity of organisms and oceanatmosphere interactions.

DIPLANOAGAP: Distribution of Plastics in the North Atlantic Garbage Patch Ponta Delgada (Portugal) – Malaga (Spain) 17.08. – 12.09.2019 The expedition POS 536 is part of a multi-disciplinary research initiative of GEOMAR investigating the origin, transport and fate of plastic debris from estuaries to the oceanic garbage patches. The main focus will be on the vertical transfer of plastic debris from the surface and near-surface waters to the deep sea and on the processes that mediate this transport. The obtained data will help to develop quantitative models that provide information about the level of plastic pollution in the different compartments of the open ocean (surface, water column, seafloor). Furthermore, the effects of plastic debris on marine organisms in the open ocean will be assessed. The cruise will provide data about the: (1) abundance of plastic debris with a minimum size of 100 μm as well as the composition of polymer types in the water column at different depths from the sea surface to the seafloor including the sediment, (2) abundance and composition of plastic debris in organic aggregates (“marine snow”), (3) in pelagic and benthic organisms (invertebrates and fish) and in fecal pellets, (4) abundance and the identity of biofoulers (bacteria, protozoans and metazoans) on the surface of plastic debris from different water depths, (5) identification of chemical compounds (“additives”) in the plastic debris and in water samples.
