Abstract:
The article discusses pop culture as a modern phenomenon, the authors analyz-ing the notion of pop culture, its connection with «the mass», the axiological sys-tem of the young technological age generation as well as with the technical pro-gress as the basis of the epoch under discussion. Besides, comparing mass culture works (artefacts) with and juxtaposing them to those of classical culture, the au-thors explore pop culture structure and its connection with mass production conditioning the consumer society standards. Among of the foci of attention are the role of cinema in the formation, development, and functioning of pop culture and cinema product as its apex. One of the problems under consideration is that of pop culture as the sphere of different cultures interrelationships causing the least number of conflicts and thus acting as an instrument of the (seeming) cul-tural convergence of the peoples.

Abstract:
Purpose of the article is to analyze reasons of rapid growth of the Korean cultural product popularity in European cultural environment, to identify coincidence of the worldview, aesthetic, gaming demands of the Western consumer audience and art patterns of the Korean mass-culture. The phenomenon of the rapid popularity growth of Korean cultural products is called the “Korean wave. According to statistics, K-pop forms 2% of GDP (for comparison, Korean aviation – 0,7 %). On March 2020 the artistic heritage of the nowadays most popular Korean pop-band BTS was recognized “the strategic export product” of South Korea. That’s why it is actually to study out reasons for the great popularity of the “Korean wave” among the Western European cultural environment. Methodology. Theoretical basis of the exploration includes authors as of the applying field of cultural science, so of the fundamental one. For example, N. Tytkova (2020) analyzes style peculiarities of the Korean wave, Y. Pak (2015) outlines the genealogy of the phenomenon according to the Korean ethnic mentality specificity. Appealing to the theoretical works of R. Popty (1996) and F. Jameson (2008), T. Vermeulen and R. van der Akker (2010) has facilitated deeper understanding as of the Metamodern features of the actual European culture so the specificity of nowadays Korean pop-culture. Scientific novelty. Popularity of the Southern Korean pop-culture in Europe and Northern America is caused not only by the marketing peculiarities of the K-pop industry but also by its reasoning with key values and demands of the metamodern Western culture, such as “new sincerity”, “sober fanaticism”, “pragmatic romanticism”, “causal esotericism”. Conclusions. The powerful request for the youth artifacts and practices is been formed in the West. But artistic and academic discourse is still been under the influence of distrustfully critical postmodern narrative. Thus, the rupture between the West’s philosophical self-reflective vocabulary and applied requests for the new sincerity, and new romanticism has created favorable conditions for the youth-oriented mass-culture import.

Abstract:
The important issue for a contemporary humanist has been the condition of culture in the postmodernity age. The author puts the currently dominant pop culture, that is too flexible and dynamic, on the opposite site to the high culture. In the postmodernity the pop culture standards determine the character of education space. Young people are looking mostly for enjoyment in the pop culture, what influences directly and indirectly the level of education. The result of this phenomenon is ongoing decrease of the level of schooling (education), what comes to the pauperization of the idea of an university. The communication is very important in the areas of culture and education. The most alarming is that the classical communication medium – vocal word, does not have enough influence to both very important processes: education and upbringing. Currently the most important is media coverage. There is a risk that the role of educator will be taken by computers.

Abstract Nowadays, popular music artists from a wide range of cultures perform in English alongside other local languages. This phenomenon questions the coexistence of different languages within local music practices. In this article, I argue that we cannot fully understand this issue without addressing the sacred dimension of language in popular music, which entails two aspects: 1) the transitory experience of an ideal that challenges intelligibility, and 2) the entanglement with social norms and institutions. Further to which, I compare Latin hegemony during the Middle Ages and the contemporary French popular music, where English and French coexist in a context marked by globalisation and ubiquitous digital technologies. The case of the Middle Ages shows that religious control over Latin led to a massive unintelligible experience of ritual singing, which reflected a strong class divide and created a demand for music rituals in vernacular languages. In the case of contemporary French popular music, asemantical practices of language are employed by artists in order to explore alternative, sacred dimensions of language that challenge nationhood.

Abstract: Korean Wave (K-pop) is a popular culture that is so favored by teenagers, it has made local culture shift. The transfer of Korean Pop Culture spreads widely through social networks as if it could not be prevented. The entertainment industry, music, films, magazines and other aspects always present everything that is synonymous with Korean culture. Opium from Korean Pop Culture has a devastating impact on adolescents as a result (1) fanaticism of Indonesian teenagers makes it more interested in exploring Korean culture, (2) Not passionate about learning, (3) wasteful lifestyle, (4) The emergence of fanfic no child which leads to pornography and porno-action. This research method uses a qualitative description by describing the K-pop phenomenon that occurs in adolescents and how to deal with the impacts experienced by adolescents, especially Christian teenagers in Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that the handling of Christian adolescents who experience K-pop addiction can be started from the environment where they grew up, among others, the family environment, educational environment, church environment. Both families, schools, churches as well as other youth formation groups have a role to play in instilling Christian values that lead them to experience spiritual growth. When the youth environment continues to introduce who Christ is for their lives, the example needed by youth has been answered through the example in Jesus Christ.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to outline the origins and nature of the pop up retail phenomenon, examine the development and characteristics of pop up shops within the UK and offer some reflections on the impact of pop up shops within the UK’s town and city centres and on the role of pop up shops within the wider retail economy. Design/methodology/approach The paper begins with a brief review of the pop up retail phenomenon and this is followed by an examination of the development and characteristics of pop up shops in the UK. The information on which the paper is based is drawn from the corporate websites of pop up shop operators and property management companies and agencies. Findings The paper reveals that pop up shops have been developed in a variety of formats and locations within the UK and a number of factors driving pop up shop development are identified including high retail vacancy rates in shopping centres, relaxations in planning regulations, the opportunity for retailers and entrepreneurs to market test products and brands and changes in customer behaviour and consumer culture. Looking to the future pop up shops may make but a small physical contribution to increasing the number of retail units on the High Street but by enhancing the experiential environment for consumers, they may make an important contribution to the quality of shopping. Originality/value The paper provides an accessible review of the origins, development and possible impact of pop up shops within the UK and as such will interest property professionals, academics and students interested in changes in the retail environment.

Nowadays, due to the image of life style and value system for young people between Taiwan and China are not as aggressive as before, they are tagged with “Little Happiness” and “Lightly Fresh”. Based on Cheer Chen, the representative of “Twee Pop” in music, and the cultural phenomenon of Twee Pop between Taiwan and China, this paper is trying to figure out the relation among the operation of culture industry, the spectacle/performance of audience and structure of contemporary social structure. In the beginning, this paper decodes the way of how Cheer Chen creates the “Twee Pop” from the view of fans and the modal of culture industry. Above all, besides the unique voice and down-to-earth creation of Chen, the creation of codes relies on the market operation of Magic Stone Music Co. Also, two kinds of style symbols can be categorized from newspaper: one is the symbols of white clothes, jeans and Indie music, which are representative the style of lightly fresh, simple, and personality. The other one is a hipster who focuses on life that composed from the symbols of philosophy, photography and writing. Second, how the fans create their style through the lifestyle of Cheer Chen? On the external spectacle/performance of audience through the representation of Chen’s personal life and the constructed image of “traveller,” fans recognize these imageries as spectacles and become both viewers and performers. On the internal aspect, through the “truly self,” which composed from narcissism, made by Chen, ans are satisfied in watching Chen’s performance. At the same time, they continuously examine themselves and perform to others. The examining and performing process take a shape of mirroring culture. Last, fans of the cross-straits are different at the appearance of contemporary social structure and lifestyle. The 90s generation in Taiwan have more courage to think outside the box on their future plan than in China. And still difference from the 80s generation of cross-straits fans at the marriage attitude, China’s fans are almost married but Taiwan’s fans are all singles. Keywords: Twee Pop, Cheer Chen, cross-straits fans, spectacle/performance paradigm, structure of feeling

Abstract:
Another book on The Simpsons? you might wonder. Isn’t the yellow cartoon troupe around the eponymous chaotic family somewhat worn-out? Perhaps you even ask yourself whether that nineties’ show is still on the air anyhow. Accolades such as "the best TV show of the twentieth century" or "the longest-running scripted series on American prime-time television" have elevated The Simpsons to the pop culture pantheon, while also suggesting the very vintage character of the program. But the label "The Simpsons" refers not just to a show that seems to belong to a bygone television era, it implies a rich narrative universe, including a set of iconic figures, familiar across continents and generations. Through lens of a transmedia studies, Understanding The Simpsons traces the franchise’s trajectory, from its original conception shaped by alternative media traditions to its astounding, long-lived impact as a cult phenomenon in popular culture. Examining the legacy of online fan forums and bootleg T-shirts from the show’s heyday in the early 1990s, as well as the meaning of The Simpsons in contemporary digital culture, this book demonstrates how one of the most popular comedy series of all time has redefined the intersections between the corporate media and participatory culture – and is alive indeed.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter links the Simpsons phenomenon to the emergence of convergence culture, which refers to the blurring of media production and media consumption in the digital age. Various cultural agencies, I argue, have both shaped and expanded the popular narrative associated with The Simpsons. In contrast to most other pop culture texts, The Simpsons’ iconic characters and storyworld are mainly parodic commentaries that reflect sensibilities rooted in popular culture, informing what I call the series’ “popular semiosis.” Furthermore, the chapter discusses the cult series in relation to the label “fan” as well as in relation to media scholarship that adopts the dual role of critical inquiry and pop culture fandom.

Abstract:
Industry and academic circles continue to attempt to label brand community behaviours, borrowing analogies from subcultures such as religion (“evangelists”), slang (“geeks, mavens, haters”), science fiction (“fanboys”), and science (“alpha”). Although sometimes used as generic terms, upon examination, these and other such labels, can define the spectrum of brand attachment in a specific way—through narrative, metaphor, and cross-cultural labelling. Such labelling is happening already. This chapter parses the current meaning of one term from another into a folksonomy, or classification system developed by those steeped in the culture. This segmentation enables further research into specific fan types, along with industry recommendations for approaching each segment based on the behavioural characteristic inherent in both the historic and common usage of the word. It also moves toward the standardisation of these terms in industry and academic circles in order to further enable a lingua franca relating to this phenomenon.

Keats, Jonathon. "Mashup." In Virtual Words. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195398540.003.0027.

Full text
Abstract:
The origin of the mashup is a matter of debate. According to one theory, the phenomenon began in 2001 with the XFM radio broadcast of the song “Stroke of Genius,” a bootleg remix by the deejay Freelance Hellraiser that incongruously set the pop vocals of Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle” against garage rock instrumentals from the Strokes’ “Hard to Explain.” A competing hypothesis credits the culture-jamming Evolution Control Committee, which in 1993 satirically layered the brutal rap lyrics of Public Enemy over swinging Latin arrangements of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Other theories cite Club House’s 1983 medley of Steely Dan’s “Do It Again” and Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean,” Frank Zappa’s ’70s experiments in xenochrony, King Tubby’s ’60s dub remixes, John Cage’s ’50s compositions for a chorus of radios, and even the Renaissance practice of quodlibet. Although some of these may have been influential—and all are reminders of the role remixing has forever played in the creative process—this long tail of influences scarcely anticipates the explosion of songs combining vocals from one source with instrumentals from another following the Freelance Hellraiser’s XFM debut. In a matter of months mashups numbered in the thousands, with juxtapositions including Missy Elliott vs. the Cure, Art Garfunkel vs. Watership Down, and Whitney Houston vs. Kraftwork. Evoking a wrestling match, A vs. B became the standard formula for citing sources, generally in parentheses following a title playing on names of the original songs. (For instance, “Smells Like Teen Booty” was a mashup of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with “Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child.) The sounds of these remixes were as varied as the source materials, and the motivations were as disparate as the historical influences, with intended targets ranging from dance club entertainment to cultural critique. What these works shared, and have in common with the countless additional musical (and video) mashups that have since joined them, is the notion that culture is interactive, a feedback loop rather than a mail chute. Whether done in tribute or ridicule, or simply to create something beautiful, these songs mash up the standard distinction between consumer and producer.

Abstract:
Educators seek to convey information that increases knowledge and competence. A necessary condition for accomplishing these goals is to attract attention to their information. Attracting attention can be difficult. Other people, nature, and many variations of consumer society and pop culture compete for a prospective learner’s attention. People can also pay attention to things that are not “in the room” when an educator is presenting potentially important information. Prospective learners can think about events that happened in the past or events that could happen in the future. At any moment, there are many things to which people can pay attention. In this chapter, we will review basic facts about how people direct their attention. To this end, I establish simple principles that educators can use to make their presentations more memorable to more people. Individually and collectively, these principles are not an automatic recipe for success, but they can help educators avoid common mistakes in how they convey information to others. . . . The chapter’s main lessons are as follows: Learning requires attention. Human attentive capacity is extraordinarily limited. For an educator to get a prospective learner’s attention, the prospective learner must perceive the information as something they can use to achieve highly valued aspirations. These aspirations can include making bad things go away. A phenomenon called motivated reasoning sometimes leads people to pay attention to information because of how it makes them feel, rather than basing their attention on the information’s true relationship to their aspirations. Educators can benefit from considering the concept of motivated reasoning when choosing how to convey information. Many educators overestimate the amount of information to which prospective learners are willing or able to pay. Correcting these estimates can help educators increase knowledge and competence more effectively. . . The chapter reaches these conclusions in the following way. Section 7A offers basic definitions that clarify attention’s role in learning. Section 7B shows how challenging earning attention can be. Section 7C explains how to make information more memorable for more people. Section 7D concludes.

Although fandom has a rich history within pop culture, it is difficult to know what constitutes a fandom, what differentiates fandoms from similar phenomena as well as what different types of fandoms exist and how fandoms are formed and maintained. In this chapter, the authors define fandom and the related member actions that create and maintain fandoms, as well as delineate the concept from the similar fan-brand communities of transactional brand communities, social brand communities and brand publics. A typology for fan-brand communities is presented with two dimensions: 1) motivation for engagement; and 2) social status and relationship type. This typology can help guide researchers, brands, and marketers in effectively managing different subcultures of fans. This chapter may be used as a starting point for further understanding of fan-brand community-based relationships.

Abstract:
This chapter applies the EIF Model by Buschfeld and Kautzsch (2017) to the case of South Korea, where English has a special status due to the military involvement of the US after World War II, and where the desire for English is both strong and persistent. The continuing deployment of American soldiers to South Korea in combination with the factors of globalization and the global mobility of individuals contributes to a strong presence of English in the East Asian nation. This chapter proposes to add the factors of ‘presence of English in the linguistic landscape and within the L1’ as well as ‘cultural phenomena’ to the forces to be included in the EIF Model as these potentially influence further development of the respective variety. Consequently, English loanwords in Korean and the phenomenon of K-Pop are discussed from a World Englishes perspective. In the end, South Korea is placed between the stabilization (phase 2) and nativization phase (phase 3) of the EIF Model.

Abstract:
In the summer of 1660, a strange phenomenon followed Mount Vesuvius’s eruption: red or black crosses started appearing on people’s linen, clothes, and even limbs. Since the Neapolitan people feared that the crosses were a supernatural occurrence and a terrible omen, the political and ecclesiastical leaders promoted the publication of books providing reasonable and pious explanations of the phenomenon. Among the authors who intervened in the debate over the nature of the crosses were Carlo Calà (who was hoping to gain favor with both the Viceroy and the Pope) and Athanasius Kircher, one of the leading protagonists of early modern Catholic culture. This chapter explains how the common interest in the crosses and Kircher’s scientific curiosity for fossils and giants provided Carlo with the opportunity to approach Kircher and make him aware of the case of his ancestor Giovanni, with the hope that the illustrious Catholic intellectual might support it.

Abstract:
Disc degeneration is a multifactor phenomenon. It has been found that intervertebral disc (IVD) cells respond to such factors as pH, osmotic pressure, genetic factors, and mechanical loading (Guilak, 1999). During daily activities the human intervertebral disc is exposed to oscillatory hydrostatic loads that produce pressures >2MPa in vivo (Nachemson, 1964 and 1979). It is known that dynamic loads with critical frequencies close to that of the in vivo human spine resonant frequency (4–5 Hz) have a destructive effect on disc tissue properties (Pope, 1993). Whether this destructive effect is purely mechanical, due to loading magnification, or biological, affecting cell metabolism, is unknown. Previous work (Merryman, 2002) showed that there was no significant effect upon monolayer IVD cells loaded at 15Hz, while lower frequencies (1 and 8Hz) altered collagen synthesis compared to control. To address this issue, we developed a mechanically active culture system capable of delivering a wide range of loading frequencies and amplitudes of hydrostatic pressure to cultures of disc cells. Nucleus pulposus cells of pig discs were isolated and suspended in alginate beads. Alginate cultures were divided into 6 groups; five groups were exposed to cyclic pressures of frequencies 1, 3, 5, 8, and 10Hz with the same amplitude of 1MPa, and group 6 was the control group (no loading). Cultures of different groups were loaded for 3 days (30 minutes daily) in a hydraulic chamber filled with culture media. The effect of loading frequency on collagen metabolism among different groups was compared by measuring incorporated [3H]-proline into collagen for medium and total extracts. The results indicated a poor synthesis rate and more degradation near the 5Hz frequency.

Abstract:
The article hypothesises that the opposition of ‘publicity/privacy’ concepts (alongside with other fundamental dichotomies, e.g. spiritual/material, social/individual, political/personal) in the media era, and first of all in the era of the Internet together with related communicative resources, is no longer productive. The study was performed via discursive analysis since it concerns methods of making use of the original concepts of ‘publicity’ and ‘privacy’. The author also addresses media survey methods since it is a contemporary media context that guides changes in the balance between the concerned phenomena. The deconstruction method is also important since the theatre institution itself, on the example of which the phenomenon of the interpenetration of the public and the private is examined, is deconstructed and shadowed by absolutely new theatrical practices. The culturological approach is the paradigmal prism through which the declared topic is researched, since the study goal is to demonstrate how ‘current’ (Z. Bauman) changes of the modern cultural landscape change habitual ideas on some or other dichotomies, particularly the dichotomy of ‘publicity/private’. The aforementioned research tools were used in the study to address theatrical practices explicitly demonstrating the removal of the dichotomy of public and private. A closer look was taken at the play ‘Questioning’ staged by the contemporary Petersburg theatre Pop-up, and where invasion of publicity into the area of privacy and intimity, and exposition of aspects taken out from ultimate existential depths constitutes the very essence of the play. The article concludes that such theatrical practices can take place when the cultural horizon is extended to enable the attribution of a new semantic scope, in particular ‘forced publicness’ (E. Shulman).

Full text
Abstract:
The necessity to improve broiler thermotolerance and live performance led to the following hypothesis: Appropriate comprehensive incubation treatments that include significant temperature management changes will promote angiogenesis and will improve acquisition of thermotolerance and carcass quality of heavy broilers through epigenetic adaptation. It was based on the following questions: 1. Can TM during embryogenesis of broilers induce a longer-lasting thermoregulatory memory (up to marketing age of 10 wk) that will improve acquisition of thermotolerance as well as increased breast meat yield in heavy broilers? 2. The improved sensible heat loss (SHL) suggests an improved peripheral vasodilation process. Does elevated temperature during incubation affect vasculogenesis and angiogenesis processes in the chick embryo? Will such create subsequent advantages for heavy broilers coping with adverse hot conditions? 3. What are the changes that occur in the PO/AH that induce the changes in the threshold response for heat production/heat loss based on the concept of epigenetic temperature adaptation? The original objectives of this study were as follow: a. to assess the improvement of thermotolerance efficiency and carcass quality of heavy broilers (~4 kg); b. toimproveperipheral vascularization and angiogenesis that improve sensible heat loss (SHL); c. to study the changes in the PO/AH thermoregulatory response for heat production/losscaused by modulating incubation temperature. To reach the goals: a. the effect of TM on performance and thermotolerance of broilers reared to 10 wk of age was studied. b. the effect of preincubation heating with an elevated temperature during the 1ˢᵗ 3 to 5 d of incubation in the presence of modified fresh air flow coupled with changes in turning frequency was elucidated; c.the effect of elevated temperature on vasculogenesis and angiogenesis was determined using in ovo and whole embryo chick culture as well as HIF-1α VEGF-α2 VEGF-R, FGF-2, and Gelatinase A (MMP2) gene expression. The effects on peripheral blood system of post-hatch chicks was determined with an infrared thermal imaging technique; c. the expression of BDNF was determined during the development of the thermal control set-point in the preoptic anterior hypothalamus (PO/AH). Background to the topic: Rapid growth rate has presented broiler chickens with seriousdifficulties when called upon to efficiently thermoregulate in hot environmental conditions. Being homeotherms, birds are able to maintain their body temperature (Tb) within a narrow range. An increase in Tb above the regulated range, as a result of exposure to environmental conditions and/or excessive metabolic heat production that often characterize broiler chickens, may lead to a potentially lethal cascade of irreversible thermoregulatory events. Exposure to temperature fluctuations during the perinatal period has been shown to lead to epigenetic temperature adaptation. The mechanism for this adaptation was based on the assumption that environmental factors, especially ambient temperature, have a strong influence on the determination of the “set-point” for physiological control systems during “critical developmental phases.” Recently, Piestunet al. (2008) demonstrated for the first time that TM (an elevated incubation temperature of 39.5°C for 12 h/d from E7 to E16) during the development/maturation of the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-thyroid axis (thermoregulation) and the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-adrenal axis (stress) significantly improved the thermotolerance and performance of broilers at 35 d of age. These phenomena raised two questions that were addressed in this project: 1. was it possible to detect changes leading to the determination of the “set point”; 2. Did TM have a similar long lasting effect (up to 70 d of age)? 3. Did other TM combinations (pre-heating and heating during the 1ˢᵗ 3 to 5 d of incubation) coupled with changes in turning frequency have any performance effect? The improved thermotolerance resulted mainly from an efficient capacity to reduce heat production and the level of stress that coincided with an increase in SHL (Piestunet al., 2008; 2009). The increase in SHL (Piestunet al., 2009) suggested an additional positive effect of TM on vasculogenesis and angiogensis. 4. In order to sustain or even improve broiler performance, TM during the period of the chorioallantoic membrane development was thought to increase vasculogenesis and angiogenesis providing better vasodilatation and by that SHL post-hatch.
