Pope John Paul II contributed more than any other Pope in Christian history to interreligious dialogue. This article reviews the pastoral approach of Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) to interreligious dialogue (IRD) and its application in the Archdiocese of Mombasa, Kenya. The Roman Catholic Church (RCC) embraced IRD during the Vatican II Council (1962-1965) convened by Pope John XXIII, who passed on in 1963. While his successor, Pope Pius VI, guided the council and laid grounds for IRD by shifting from its exclusive theology of the pre-Vatican period, Pope John Paul II directed and shaped the pa

In his much quoted article ‘How to be a Counter-Reformation Saint’, Professor Peter Burke remarks on the ‘crisis of canonisations’ which afflicted the papacy in the middle years of the sixteenth century. That particular crisis, of course, was that there were no canonizations. As the veneration of saints came under attack from the reformers, successive pontiffs thought it politic to refrain from creating yet more. In the long pontificate of the late Pope John Paul II (1978—2005), the longest in papal history apart from that of Pope Pius IX (1846–78) — whom John Paul beatified, along with Pope J

Abstract The chapter examines the Italian reactions to the election of John Paul II to the papacy. Within the profound global transformations that characterized the 1970s, the author highlights how for many observers Wojtyla's election put an end to the Church’s age-old Italo-centrism and presented the image of a strong, universal brand of Catholicism, a guide and response to contemporary anxieties as society became increasingly fragmented and unsure of its identity.

The article reflects the impact of encouragement by John Paul II on the Lithuanian struggle for Independence. Three messages by the Pope were the most important: proclamation Bishop Jurgis Matulaitis the Blessed in 1987, promotion Bishop Vincentas Slad-kevičius to cardinal in 1988 and the trip to Lithuania in September 1993 directly related with the pull-out of the Red Army. Sustainable independence unites rather than divides people of different cultural backgrounds and delights rather than arouses someone’s anger in society. This chapter explores Pope John Paul II's denunciations of antisemitism. Since his election in 1978, John Paul II has repeatedly broken new ground in relations with the Jewish community. As the texts on Jews and Judaism compiled under the title Spiritual Pilgrimage by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) show, his writings, homilies, and speeches on Jewish themes represent a remarkable contribution to the historic dialogue between Jews and Catholics today. This ‘spiritual pilgrimage’ culminated in his becoming the first Roman pontiff to visit a synagogue in the Eternal City (or elsewhere) in 1986,
