Abstract:
The relations between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church have long been studied over the years in academia. Much focus has been placed upon the Fourth Crusade as the final act that brought the schism of 1054 into full development between the two churches. However, it was during the First Crusade that the Roman Catholic Church made its first concrete efforts to repair relations with the Eastern Orthodox Church. Yet such efforts were eventually twisted to suit the purposes of some of the crusading lords, and thus becoming arguably the largest blow to church reunification because it lead to the permanent formation of an anti-Greek attitude in Latin Europe.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT - It was right after the global warming phenomenon were firstly noticed that the discussions about the climate change theme began. The Kyoto Protocol and the Copenhagen Conference are considered as being some of the most important international agreements that have determined general and specific goals aiming the contradiction of both global heating and the discharge of green-house effect gases. For the last couple of years several urban projects and contests were introduced with the aim of improving and requalifying cities in order to turn them more environmentally sustainable. Based on this subject other important international projects and strategies were also introduced such as: the consult Le Grand Pari(s), London 2012, city of Masdar and Plano Nacional para Alterações Climáticas within Portugal and the Estrategia Energético-Ambiental para Lisboa. All these projects and strategies are particularly important to the transports sector, defending the use and development of new public transports more environmental friendly (bicycles, electric cars, etc.) It is in fact within this context that the concept of “Transports Interface” happens, urban infra-structures that play a very important role regarding both transports speed and change efficiency, joined together with leisure, market, lodging and services spaces offer. The transports interfaces play a very important role in the development of “urban poles”, a fundamental principle for the definition of the city pos-Kyoto. The interface concept and the intermodal idea are rather recent in Portugal therefore it is particularly interesting the development of the urban project at “Sete Rios” area, where several fluxes are reunited which are nowadays disarticulated and dysfunctional. This intervention project arises against the urbanistic study that has been ordered by Lisbon’s CityHall for this specific area, as we consider that “Sete Rios is a very important transport nodes creating a multifunctional, efficient and dense interface as far as environmental, social and cultural plans are concerned. The theme of “Transports interface” plays the central role within both this report and the project proposal regarding the requalification of “Sete Rios” Railway Station, developed on the enclosures I and II.

The work however presented try to make an analysis of the relation urban-agricultural in the context of the process of metropolization of Natal. On the basis of this approach searched to argue the estruturation of the Brazilian urban space and the relation with the agricultural one, evidencing an academic debate little contemplated, in view of that the space transformations guided by Brazilian industrialization had earned as endorsement a mere urban direction, fact that neglected factors more complex than they for the urban-agricultural relation in the context of the urbanization and, more recently, of the metropolization. Another important factor in the construction of the work was the contextualization of the urbanization of the Rio Grande do Norte, as well as of the metropolization of Natal, where if the significant presence of an agricultural reality made an analysis of the configuration metropolitan in the present time displaying that also remains and reproduces the metropolis, fact that conditions and justifies the treatment of the reality metropolitan for the bias of the urban-agricultural relation. The approach of this relation was directed for the agricultural nestings of the Region Metropolitan of Natal (RMN), understood as fragments agricultural in the context of the metropolis, in view of that a tenuous correspondence of these nestings with the metropolis in the direction of its integration was observed. As methodology one used bibliographical survey in periodic and books and collected secondary data-collecting next to the IBGE and to the INCRA and still were directed a field research where interviews next to the seated ones had been carried through. In this direction, one evidenced that the metropolization also absorbs and even though it reproduces the ruralidade that if verifies in the RMN finishing for mining the idea of an urban one that it excludes the agricultural one. In the case of the RMN, we have agricultural and the urban one exactly if conforming in one space that is metropolitan

Abstract:

Three-dimensional (3-D) modeling of urban environments has numerous applications, including virtual environments, urban planning, and physical simulation. Constructing 3-D models from photographs (images) is thus an important area of research in computer vision, and increasingly, computer graphics. However, despite many years of research, a system that automatically recovers realistic 3-D models remains elusive; most practical systems require significant human input. Unlike automatic algorithms, human-assisted systems are not scalable, both in terms of the number of images processed and the complexity of the generated 3-D model. This thesis describes novel techniques to automatically extract textured 3-D models of urban environments from pose imagery, i.e., images annotated with camera position and orientation in a single global coordinate system. Physical instruments (e.g., surveying, Global Positioning System (GPS), inertial sensors, etc.) are used to provide accurate initial pose estimates to the proposed algorithms. As these estimates are not perfect, I first describe two optimization techniques that refine pose estimates using information present in the images: spherical mosaicing recovers relative rotations between images taken from a single position, and mosaic registration accurately locates mosaics in a global coordinate system. Next, I describe an algorithm that extracts vertical facades from mosaics annotated with accurate pose. The algorithm employs horizontal line segments to detect likely facade orientations and locates these facades using a space-sweep technique. Textures are robustly computed for the facades by combining information from several mosaics using median statistics. I present results for a large pose image dataset ( consisting of about four thousand images taken from eighty-one positions) of an urban office complex. These techniques were successful in recovering all significant vertical facades in the complex, as well as several neighboring facades.

Abstract:

Availability of fresh, healthy produce for low-income people is a growing concern for advocates and public officials concerned with health disparities and diet-related disease. Healthy corner store conversions are a promising strategy to address issues of food access. To be successful, conversion programs must address the challenges of sourcing and selling produce. As a perishable product, produce requires store owner to possess significant skills and infrastructure for proper management. Additionally, corner stores face a supply chain increasingly structured for large supermarkets and must balance the often-competing factors of small scale, affordability, and quality. Finally, programs must consider how to appropriately serve and engage communities to ensure financial viability and maximize health impacts. This thesis explores strategies to improve the provision of produce through corner stores through a review of reports, literature, and practice. Central to these approaches are the goals of increased efficiency and affordability and long-term sustainability. Several corner store programs have demonstrated the possibility for making money through produce sales using a holistic approach that engages community members and provides training and assistance to store owners. Supply strategies range from cooperative purchasing, shared docking with larger stores or institutions, convincing wholesalers to accommodate smaller orders, and developing new distribution infrastructure that integrates small stores into the local food system. This work concludes with key lessons for corner store programs seeking to improve produce supply practices and infrastructure. The discussion also includes opportunities for actors in produce supply and distribution to capture this emerging market and support food access efforts.

Several studies have shown that the dropout rate of students in a blended mode of education presents itself as a worldwide problem. Addressing this problem is a permanent challenging proposition. In this sense, this study addresses the issue of evasion in a supporting pole serviced by the Universidade Aberta (Open University of Brazil (UAB)), in partnership with Universidade Federal do Cearà (Federal University of Cearà (UFC)), through the Virtual Institute of UFC. At this pole, three undergraduate courses work under the management of the Institute: Bachelor in Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts in English, and Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese. Our objective is to reveal the reason for the dropout rate at the Rubens Vaz pole (Rubens Vaz school). This initiative is justified by the increasing number of students dropping out in this type of education and the difficulties experienced in every moment of history of this upward educational proposal. This study reveals that public policies, based on social studies about the causes of this social, educational, and economic low motivation towards semi-presential education, act as a viable tool of investments as a motivator to avoid dropouts which are faced as a complex problem. The data was collected through a questionnaire applied via email. The survey sample was formed by students and tutors who develop classroom activities at that pole. We used the model of Vincent Tinto (1975) as a tool tester for the causes that led to the permanence of the remaining students and the dropout of the other students. The conclusion reveals that the investigated causes permeate the reasons that have taken students to relinquish their courses. Factors such as safety, resistance to semi-face methodology, management, and structure of the pole represents, according to students and tutors, topics that can lEaD students to quit. In return, the AVA and the good relationship between students and tutors stand out positively in the continuity of the students in the course. The study found a dropout rate of 11.11% and a compatible national average.

Abstract:
The contemporary city is challenged by various social, cultural, political and environmental complexities. The increasing demands on cities globally puts pressure on governments and local communities to manage existing public assets and space, as well as designing and developing new infrastructure that is required to service a variety of urban dwellers. However, the level of community engagement undertaken during the city-making process commonly takes a one size fits all approach, with the level of engagement reduced to informing people, rather than collaborating with them. Top-down approaches to city -making, generally championed by government and private enterprise, have arguably failed to engage and inspire communities in meaningful ways. Likewise, bottom-up initiatives driven by local communities have also proven to be difficult in promoting effective and lasting impacts on official city-making initiatives. The thesis reports on the design, implementation and deployment of a series of pop-up interventions, which used a combination of digital and analogue media, as well as their effectiveness for allowing people to submit their views, thoughts and opinions on various city-making initiatives. The findings and recommendations, which emerged from the research, illustrate the potential of combining social, analogue and digital interactions by outlining a number of comprehensive frameworks. First, this includes a collaborative and inclusive design approach, referred to as middle-out design. This approach draws on the collective knowledge from stakeholders at the top and everyday people at the bottom, in order to meet somewhere in the middle. Second, an urban acupuncture framework was developed as a guide to deploy pop-up community engagement programmes locally or city-wide. Third, a set of design patterns was created for the design and development of digitally augmented pop-ups.

Abstract:
A trend of temporary interventions is sweeping through Western cities in the 21st century. Being anything from art on street benches or small pop-up stores to street festivals, food trucks or urban farms, these expressions have recently been given more attention by the academic world and city authorities. Such expressions are often clustered under umbrella concepts such as tactical urbanism, temporary urbanism, DIY urbanism, guerilla urbanism and pop-up urbanism. In this thesis the expressions and the way in which they are organized are called Tactical and Temporary Urbanism Initiatives (TTUI). In the Swedish municipality Nacka east of Stockholm, a small peninsula called Kvarnholmen has hosted actors with short-term commitments during the summer of 2014; a project called Under Konstruktion. Situated at the site were an art & exhibition center, a ‘magical’ garden, a food caravan, a night club and a festival. In parallel, Kvarnholmen is developing into a city district as part of a municipal aim to build almost 15000 new apartments over the next 15 years. The initiators of Under Konstruktion, Nacka municipality and the developer KUAB, have aimed to put Kvarnholmen “on the map” during the time of construction (among other intentions) and have brought in the above actors to realize this ambition. The thesis evaluates Under Konstruktion in order to answer the research question; what is the potential role and function of tactical and temporary urbanism initiatives within municipal planning and urban development processes in a Swedish context? Based on previous research and 11 interviews with project actors, it is discussed why TTUI should be implemented in municipal planning and what kind of knowledge and structures that are needed for an implementation to take place. Potential risks associated with TTUI implementation is also discussed. The evaluation shows that several ambitions have been achieved. The project was well-attended and a medial success but heavy workload and poor communication added stress and a negative touch. More involved actors and better anchoring within the municipal organization is suggested, and the cherry-picking of actors is questioned. Under Konstruktion has mainly been concerned with market strategic goals, which is not the main intention of TTUI and merely one piece of an urban development strategy. It is argued for that such a TTUI strategy in other locations in Nacka could possibly hasten gentrification processes. The thesis suggests broad TTUI implementation to recognize and adapt to global trends, basing the implementation on its advantages to rationalize land use, support creativity and diversify citizen participation processes. Such an approach have risks worth considering, for instance conflicts between actors, citizen ignorance or lack of bottom-up creativity. It would also be time-consuming, require resources and a questioning of municipal professions. Through the unique character of Under Konstruktion, Nacka has shown commitment to create vibrant districts, but not yet have TTUI become a significant part of its urban development strategy. With the current massive development in mind, implementing a short-term perspective cannot be hastened but step-by-step included to permeate the long-term strategic framework.

Abstract:
This research approaches the updating of utopian impulses through the poetic trajectory of the Belgian-Mexican artist Francis Alÿs and his intertwining with the notion of the right to the city developed by Henri Lefebvre. More specifically, it questions the potential for reflection and transformation that this artistic production presents in relation to our way of thinking and occupying public spaces, both from a time and spatial point of view. The empirical object is Francis Alÿs oeuvre carried out in large western cities, mostly Latin American, between the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first. These actions are discussed facing the theoretical contributions from authors who are contemporary to Francis Alÿs: Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Jacques Rancière, Michel de Certeau and Néstor García Canclini. The concepts that underlie all the research, however, such as public space, right to the city and utopian impulse, go back to two thinkers from the early twentieth century: Henri Lefebvre and Ernst Bloch. The dialogue between theory and practice, seeking in artistic works the updating of the concepts brought by the cited authors and aiming to identify the reverberation of these practices in theory, forms the backbone of this master’s dissertation.

The fast growth of cities causes the meeting of urban areas and the increase of political, economic and social influence between nearby cities, resulting in a process known as metropolization, which, in turn, causes direct impact on the way people and goods move through the cities - that is, on urban mobility. Especially in developing countries like Brazil, where the metropolitan areas (RM) lack of political interest and planning structures to ensure the governance of these areas, the effects of metropolization can cause irreversible negative impacts on mobility. As results of the claims of the Urban Reform, instruments such as the Statute of the City, the National Policy of Urban Mobility and the newly created Statute of Metropolis emerge as support to Brazilian RMs in achieving efficient mobility. According to these instruments, the various urban actions must be planned together to achieve more organized, socially fair and environmentally viable cities. From this situation, this study sought to show if the major infrastructure projects of urban and road expansion deployed in the Metropolitan Region of Natal (RMN), which physical and territorial transformations were intensified in recent decades, have been planned in accordance with mobility management. Firstly, the most important projects of the functional metropolis ? formed by the municipalities of RMN that have strong integration ? were listed. Then, a criterion called "Metropolitan Cohesion Potential" was established to define which projects were more relevant on the RMN?s territory as limitations of this study did not allow analysis of all projects. The International Airport Alu?zio Alves, the Light Rail and Metropolitan Road presented the highest potential of metropolitan cohesion, so they were analyzed considering their relationship with mobility management, primary objective of the research. It was investigated if the structuring project meets the steps of the new type of desirable urban mobility: promotes investments in the poorest areas of infrastructure; causes population density and induces mixed land uses; contributes to the compactness; encourages democratic access of the population to goods and services; has a structure that indulges the transport of non-motorized means and collective motor; enables integration of modal; and seeks to cause less environmental damage. From this analysis, it can be seen that the RMN entails the consolidation of an urban environment with efficient mobility, to promote sustainable development in its territory, or in a contrary manner, fosters a disorderly growth by allowing structuring projects to be deployed separated from the mobility management.

Abstract:
This thesis examines what roles linguistic, stylistic and sociocultural factors play in the popularity of contemporary Chinese-English bilingual codeswitching songs released between the years of 2004 and 2010, making a case study of the urban youth audience of Shanghai. It is significant as it is the first large scale study into Chinese-English songs that has looked at all of these three factors: linguistic, stylistic and sociocultural, but also because it compares the findings in these three areas from corpus analysis with an audience study. A corpus of 150 songs from popular codeswitching performers was collected, and was analysed individually in relation to the linguistic, stylistic and sociocultural factors with regard to features that may enhance the popularity of these songs. To this was added an audience study based on fieldwork in Shanghai which included participant observation and data collection from online surveys and individual interviews. First a linguistic analysis was done on syntactic grounds based on the Myers-Scotton 1993 Classic MLF (Matrix Language Frame) model, and this was followed by an analysis of the metaphorical functions of these songs following general pragmatic theories of Gumperz (1982). A stylistic analysis was then done on the corpus, using theories of literary stylistics from Leech (1969) and the stylistic findings of recent codeswitching researchers. This stylistic section also examined modes of language use after Hymes. The sociocultural aspects within the songs were examined using a social anthropological framework, and used research in the East Asian setting by Gao Liwei (2007) and Yang Mei-hui (1997) on identity formation, as well as the Accommodation Theory of Giles and Smith (1979), and other research relevant to codeswitching in the East Asian pop culture context, such as J. Lee (2004, 2006). Data collection was also carried out based on Hymes’ (1971) ethnographical techniques, and Blom and Gumperz’s (1972) participant observation. The findings from each of the factors were discussed in relation to the audience study and the results show that: 1) These codeswitching songs are both a reflection of the singers’ and audiences’ need to present a particular identity, negotiated within the particular expectations of music, genre and location. 2) Chinese-English codeswitching songs are a reflection of the high levels of English codeswitching in Shanghai, Chinese, and also wider East Asian popular culture, and reflect a growing bilingual or multilingual identity in wider East Asia. 3) The English within the Chinese-English codeswitching songs is localised to a Southern Chinese, almost a Shanghai context. 4) The uses to which codeswitching is put, or how codeswitching appears in songs, depends on many factors, and so it is difficult to clearly define the functions, stylistic techniques, or sociocultural purposes of codeswitching in songs consistently across different genres, chronological periods (due to changes in language use over time), or between cultures. Despite this, it is hoped that the number of unique findings from the corpus analysis and the discussion in this study could enlighten or stimulate future studies examining codeswitching in songs.

The metropolitan regions of Northeast Brazil are being gradually included in a scenario of international investments, which are motivated by the restructuring of both touristic and real-estate sectors. The new capital, real-estate developers and space configurations that result from this process indicate the need for the creation and implementation of public tools which should, at least, allow the mitigation of the urban impacts and environmental losses resulting from this situation. The effects on landscape and on the socio-spatial configuration result from the intensification caused by the dynamism of the "real estate-tourism" sector. There is a regional integration as an expression of the urban expansion of the metropolitan area of Natal. This study investigates the uniqueness of the restructuring and territorial integration of coastal areas and the strategies of the circuit of capital accumulation formed by linking the real estate to tourism. It is intended to increase the understanding about the strategies of tourism, real estate and public policy agents involved in this territorial reconfiguration and in the fund-raising needed for the investments, to understand the existing social and environmental effects and their future trends and also to understand the forms of spatial production as results from the practices of approaching the land transformation and the tourism valorization of the landscape, in a synchronous manner, first in the Northeast region and, as a focal study, in the Metropolitan Area of Natal. Likewise, it is intended to apprehend the current processes of metropolization of the eastern coast of Rio Grande do Norte, in addition to indicate its physical-territorial transformation and the types of projects/developments promoted by the market in the recent period. Based upon analysis undertaken for the Metropolitan Region of Natal RN, this piece of work presents some considerations on possible legal instruments that can be adjusted to the municipalities which are experiencing the impact of this peculiar and recent phenomenon in the region, caused by the arrival of the real estate-touristic capital. It is also intended to point out basic proposals to the forms of public intervention, in a speculative way, starting from a Metropolitan Planning project within a medium and long term
Abstract:

Biodiversity is all around us, in what we wear, eat, into objects from our daily, past and future lives. It is present as an explosion of colors and hues, sounds and smells. It is both invisible and inescapable. The discourses on biodiversity are also multiple: it is the basis of life on Earth, it is essential, and yet suffers constant threats. In this thesis we seek to raise possibilities of working with biodiversity as a theme in an urban environment, the São Carlos Ecological Pole, and to understand the meanings attributed to biodiversity by researchers and students in the Life Sciences and similar areas, and to envision possibilities for addressing the concept of biodiversity in environmental education processes conducted within the principles of a critical environmental education. We conducted a qualitative study, using naturalist research techniques and the Delphi Method, and used a philosophical hermeneutics perspective to interpret and understand the data. This research generated nine categories of meaning attributed to biodiversity: Concreteness, Symbolic, Knowledge, Holism, Kaleidoscope, Hidden, Threatened, Inclusive and Exclusive, listed 16 sets of concepts considered essential, organized in spheres that contemplate aspects of scientific content, values and action, and six suggestions of themes that can help the process of learning about biodiversity: Experiencing biodiversity; "Opening your eyes" for biodiversity; Exercising dialogue/discussions; Acknowledging the importance of biodiversity and the limits of human interference; Biodiversity in our own territory; Overcoming teaching fragmentation. The results are ideas, suggestions, possibilities to be explored from the perspective of a critical environmental education, and must be contextualized in processes that respect the multiplicity of views on environmental issues, and seek understanding and to build agreements that allow for action in favor of the diversity of life on Earth.

Abstract:
Considering that much of the world's population already lives in cities, thinking sustainably requires understanding the dynamics of cities, seeking alternatives to large and complex issues emanating from the so-called sustainable development. Urban sustainability poses challenges to governments and the whole society in order to meet current demands, preventing and mitigating the negative effects generated because of economic growth. Therefore, there is the need for integrated management between agencies of different government sectors and different policy areas and the need for reflection on new designs for planning and management of public policies in the context of spatial planning, to combine economic growth, environmental preservation and quality of life of the population. In this sense, the present study aimed to analyze the change of the social system and the effects on urban sustainability of the city of Rio Grande / RS, from the installation of the Naval Pole. Therefore, we sought to basement on the assumptions of Urban Sustainability in Theory of Social Systems and the Theory of Punctuated Equilibrium. Thus, it was possible to analyze the implementation of the Naval Pole in the city of Rio Grande, identifying the effects of the urban unsustainability produced by the Naval Pole from the perspective of the Theory of Social Systems, and analyze the process of change occurred in the city, linking the evidence found the deep structure of the social system and Discontinuous Change Model, admitting that some disorders are able to break the balance and cause a number of changes, not necessarily gradually. In the context of this research, this score was associated with installation of the Naval Pole, in the city of Rio Grande in Rio Grande do Sul. The use of more than a theoretical approach proved to be relevant in this study, given the diversity of elements analyzed and the amount of data to be analyzed provided by the various stakeholders who were interviewed. To accomplish the goals of this research, an exploratory research of qualitative and descriptive nature was carried out between 2006-2014. We used primary and secondary data sources to carry out the surveys indicated. Regarding the primary data were conducted semi-structured interviews with 39 stakeholders present in the social system of Rio Grande and directly or indirectly related to Naval Pole. Data were analyzed from the content analysis methodology and grouped into categories of positive and negative effects on the economic dimension, environmental and social. The effects of the political dimension were analyzed from the Discontinuous Change Model and in view of the deep structure of social systems. Among the results, the economic dimension, perceived positive effects as increased GDP and GDP per capita, local entrepreneurship increase in tax revenues and own the city revenue, increased investment in the Federal University of Rio Grande, port of Rio Grande, in residential and commercial real estate projects, as well as financial incentives from the government in order to foster the Local Productive Arrangement. Among the negative economic effects, there is the decline in consumption in seasonal periods of project completions as well as inflation in the real estate sector and its consequences of increased demand for real estate in the city of Rio Grande. Among the positive environmental effects realized by the development of partnerships and cooperation for environmental monitoring of the municipality, environmental monitoring itself, the improvement of urban infrastructure in terms road and airport network. Among the environmental effects taken as negative, are the deforestation of green areas for the enterprise installation, environmental governance problems that result in conflicts between public and private environmental management, the negative effects provided for in the environmental permits and environmental impact studies of the project . Regarding the negative environmental effects of urban character has swelling and densification of urban infrastructure, the precariousness of industrial and municipal solid waste management, collection of incipient sewage, difficulties in collection and disposal of household waste, increasing consumption of natural resources according to the demands of large enterprises as the Naval Pole, and the negative consequences generated in terms of urban traffic because of the population increase that causes the increase in the number of vehicles and pedestrians on the road. Regarding the positive social effects, the increase stands out investment in skills and employment generation and from the ownership of the local workforce and increased purchasing power (income). Among the negative effects highlight those related to health, education, security, hand external work and professional training, migration and population growth, removal and transfer of families and houses of industrial areas, social conflicts in terms of culture shock and characterized xenophobia by interaction with workers from other locations, besides the existence of sub-human living conditions for the migrant population. The results contribute empirical evidence demonstrating the positive and negative effects of a project like the Polo Naval Rio Grande and its implications for the context in which it operates, elucidating what is the dynamic process of change in this social system. Such effects demonstrate the (in) sustainability that the project because in some dimensions and can assist in the diagnostic process to seek measures to help solve or mitigate the negative effects. In addition, the findings of this study may also contribute to public and private managers, higher education and research institutions, can develop strategies and plans of joint actions in trying to mitigate those economic effects, environmental, social and negative political as well how to leverage those considered positive, balancing the dimensions analyzed. Thus, the search can become a basis for further studies in an attempt to further studies in each of the dimensions and their effects, as well as assist in developing a more effective urban planning, to set public policies consistent with the problems arising out of Polo Naval. Therefore, you can take steps to balance economic growth, environmental protection and people's living quality, considering the need to pursue development in a sustainable manner.

Romantic love is one of the most habitual subjects in the international pop-rock songs since the 1950 s. It is a regular topic in the Brazilian pop-rock songs in the same period, too. Those Brazilian and international pop-rock songs have built a romantic love imaginary that has been disseminated by the cultural industry and mass communication media. In this research, we look for understanding the processes that have participated in the building of the Brazilian pop-rock songs imaginary, based on their lyrics and music, and in the histories, tastes, world visions and networks of a group of Brazilians composers that are representatives of this kind of song. This research looks for understanding through the imaginary the cultural identification process established among the composers and the audience of these songs. The mapping of romantic love imaginaries and the investigation of their construction processes can be revealing of a individual feeling of sharing and belongingness to specific imaginaries in the songs universe. The hypothesis is that the Brazilian pop-rock imaginary is produced by world visions convergence and by seduction, cultural identification and adhesion of composers and audiences to a specific musical ethos, that transcend boarders and result in an aesthetic, ethic and behavior approximation between Brazilian and international pop-rock songs. The investigation maps the romantic love imaginaries in the international pop-rock hits, in the second half of 20th century, and that built in the Erasmo Carlos, Rita Lee, Lobão and Pato Fu songs, Brazilian composers representatives of these musical genres in the same period. The investigation looks for identifying, using a semantic romantic love mapping, what are the main symbolical elements in these imaginaries that came from the creative processes of Brazilian composers, and became references of the approaching between Brazilian and international pop-rock songs. The theoretical reference in this research brings authors in the imaginary field, such as Gilbert Durand and Michel Maffesoli, semiotics, such as Charles Sanders Peirce, Roland Barthes and Umberto Eco, and culture and communications, such as Jesus Martín-Barbero and Stuart Hall. The conclusion shows how songs and creative processes of Brazilian composers built a romantic love imaginary that could be a expression of the feeling of belongingness and cultural identification process, that brings closer local and global aesthetics, ethics and behaviors established by successful songs

Abstract:
The topic of the thesis is a design of an urban structure fitting into the 21st century amidst former military barracks in Brno Černá Pole. The area is square-shaped and defined by the borders of the streets Provazníkova, Mathonova, Bieblova, and Generála Píky. The area is currently divided among three owners: Ministry of Defence & Armed Forces, Resort of Justice, and National Cyber and Information Security Agency (NÚKIB). The premise of the thesis is to build a new city quarter which would provide Brno's citizens with housing solutions, job opportunities, cultural and leisure centres not only for the new but also for the current inhabitants. The design includes also several blocks which aggregate multiple functions: housing, commercial premises, and administrative buildings. Generous volume of space has been given to public spaces, most prominently a square with a new town hall for Brno-sever, culture centre and a park. The examined area is situated between two busy roads which is why designing a suitable connection of the area and the overall traffic situation within the area was essential. This thesis aims to unify the area, cut short the traffic connections and create a compact city quarter close to the centre of Brno.

Abstract:
The relationships between society and nature have broadened in the last decades, owed, among other factors, to the phenomenon of urbanization. In the Northern Coast of Rio Grande do Sul this process drove the economical diversification and the incident of problems in rare ecosystems and of great vulnerability. In this sense, the main inquirenment is based on the hypothesis that urbanization is a potential vector of sustainable development for the Northern Coast of Rio Grande do Sul. The aim of this work is the proposition of directives and instruments of action based on the sustentability landmark, to subsidize politics of regional and urban development. The methodology that has orientated this research is characterized for the analysis of the interactions between society and nature in two scales of approach, the regional and the local. Among the conclusions of the work in the regional scale which include 21 municipalities, could be pointed out that: a) the politics of State, the emancipations, the migrations and the entrepeneurship are the principal factors of the urbanization process; b) the region presents four municipal socioeconomic profiles; c) the biggest urban environmental lack is the basic sanitation; d) the environmental social diversity of the Northern Coast sets itself up as important element for his development and for the construction of a regional identity. The production of two graphic models on the territorial dynamic and the proposition of directives of regional character stand out as original contributions. Three priority sectors of intervention were identified through the spacial analysis in the local scale (Capão da Canoa municipality): the basic sanitation, the environmental and cultural preservation and the control of the use and occupation of the land. It was noticed that the soil impermeabilization, besides enlarging the superficial drainage leads, among other factors, cause the seccionment of the dune fields in backshore, compromising the sanitary quality of the beach sand and the balneability of the water. The proposed measures are characterized by multifunctionality, implantation low cost and spacious social search. Among the original contributions for the urban scale could be proposed: a) basins of deadening in the shares (reservoirs) and in the green areas (lakes) to minimize the impacts of the superficial drainage towards the beach system; b) a protection zone to the coast with a least bealt of not occupation of 50 m of width to the rearguard of the beach (short term) to reduce the impacts resulting from the waves energy and a belt of 150 m of width (long term) as prevention to an elevation of the medial sea level in the next one hundred years; c) the adoption of preventive measures and of the use control and occupation of the urban land, through urbanistic instruments predicted in the City Statute. Through the methodology and the development of the work and his objectives in the regional and local scales, was possible to confirm the initially formulated hypothesis. The conclusion is that the political decision for the adoption or not of the measures and actions here set out depends essentially on cultural changes. The commitment of the public power, of the civil society and of his institutions is a decisive factor to transform the Northern Coast of Rio Grande do Sul in an Environmental Sustentability Pole.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at analysing, in the contemporary world (1980-2013), the trajectory of catholicism, in the wake of microhistory, through the study of its actors, its territories and its communities, the modes of ecclesial government. We will highlight the paradox of the fabric of the local Church which expands and fragments, but also contracts and polarizes, forcing the Ordinary, in his government, to think of a paradigm shift: from the challenge of proximity to the one of unity, taking into account the plurality of communities and associated territories. To support our analyses, we will study the dioceses of Rennes, Autun and Frejus-Toulon. A shift from the logic of enclosures to the dynamics of a centralizing pole will be apprehended, sometimes in tension, by Church actors, in the light of four issues structuring the argument: « biotope » (rural/urban), community diversity, activism and the question of identity (status of clerics, co-responsibility, modalities of evangelization, communautarism...).History and social geography will enable us to renew the problems of spatial and religious belonging by starting from questions about the territory according to precise indicators: networks of the faithful and militants, the contribution of new communities (numbers, pastoral strategies, government), episcopal options in favour of a particular territory or ecclesial group... For the historian, space can be considered as a heuristic tool, in which changes of scale have been imposed in short time. By delimiting our research (1980-2013), we want to focus on the interior of aeras that no longer possess the relative homogeneity that history lent them before the 20th century. Our research are presented in a three-part structure. The first part is intended above all to be contextual, in the light of postmodernity and secularization, which modify the modes of belonging to a religion declared by many in palliative care. We will analyse the close links between Catholicism and its modes of territorial integration (rural/urban) from our dioceses of reference. We will present the recompositions of the forms of militancy in the diocese of Rennes, a breeding ground for Catholic Action that is increasingly sterile and leaving room for very urban familyist militancy. The second part of this thesis will address the issues of ecclesial governance in our three dioceses of study. We will study, in the short time, the evolution of the « munus regendi » of bishops and priests with the crossing of generations; with the principle of co-responsibility and the differentiated development according to the dioceses of the permanent diaconate and of the laity in ecclesial mission. We will particularly develop the Toulon case for which few in-depth studies have been carried out. Finally, the third part will focus on the problem of the growing development of a polarized Catholic witness in search of visibility. We will analyze the genesis of the Renewal and its trajectory in the diocese of Rennes. We will look particularly at the Emmanuel community, its promotion of the new evangelization and the fundamentalism of its pastoral modes. Then, with a certain priestly fruitfulness and a chaotic dialogue with Rome (Motu proprio in 1988 and 2007), the very heterogeneous traditionalist galaxy remains the framework of contemporary mutations that we will study in the dioceses of Rennes and Autun. Finally, we will change scale by focusing on the city-sanctuary of Paray-le-Monial, militant pole and laboratory incubator of a « new Catholicism », on the articulation between the various territories (city, sanctuary, parish) and the actors in place

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of the diploma project was to repurpose the area of military barracks in the residential neighbourhood of Černá Pole in Brno. The thesis sets out to design a new urbanistic concept within the already existing structure, devise a new town square, a park and a town hall for the district of Brno-Sever. In this project, I aimed to fill in the chasm in the current construction and create a new lively neighbourhood. The selected area is to provide its residents with high standard of living and a rich selection of facilities. The essential aspect was to focus on different types of the residential development that surrounds the given perimeter. The eastern and the southern side reveals terraced houses and family houses, while on the west side the conservatory of the Mendel University is laid out and in the north high-rises can be seen. Through this project a new space emerges, activated through various types of residential development while blending with the residual structures. Also, another goal was to design a new town hall for Brno-Sever with a cultural centre, situate a new kindergarten in the area and construct a community centre with sports facilities. Due to the lack of more prominent town square in the city district Černá Pole, the positioning of this feature was highly significant in my project. The designed square should be multifunctional, enabling the residents or wider public a wide range of utilization.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a mathematical optimization model and a methodology for the optimal design of district heating and cooling networks. The various constraints in energy balances, costs and environmental criteria can be considered in order to propose structures of flexible and innovative networks. The model allows the consideration of heating (or cooling) networks at different temperature levels, as well as different production sites and heat demands. The network’s layout as well as the optimal architecture of the heat production systems are achieved by minimizing either the total exergy consumed or the total cost for the investment and operation of the systems. The developed mathematical model is formulated into a multi-period MINLP problem. The constraints of the model are presented in nested models. The first model M1 considers the multi-period aspect and includes the constraints related to the heat exchanges between production/demand streams with the network and a thermal storage. The second model, called M2, contains the entire model M1 as well as new constraints for sizing heat pumps with variable COP. The model M3 includes the model M2 as well as new constraints for the geographical layout of the networks and the consideration of electricity balance in the problem.A methodology is also presented making it possible, using the model M3, to deal with complex and realistic case studies. The methodology proposes a decomposition of the problem following three consecutive steps. This methodology is then used for the optimization of a new district, considering heat pumps, seasonal heat storage and PV production

Duffy, Michael James. "Small wind turbines mounted to existing structures." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/34765.

Full text
Abstract:
Small wind turbines, and especially urban-mounted turbines which require no dedicated pole, have garnered great public enthusiasm in recent years. This enthusiasm has fueled widespread growth among energy conservationists, and estimates predict that the power produced nationally by small wind will increase thirty-fold by 2013. Unfortunately, most of the wind resources currently available have been designed for larger, rural-mounted turbines; thus, they are not well suited for this nascent market. A consequence of this is that many potential urban small wind turbine owners over-predict their local wind resource, which is both costly and inefficient. According to a recent study published by Encraft Ltd., small wind turbines mounted to buildings far underperformed their rural pole mounted counterparts. As a proposed solution to this problem, this project introduces the concept of a Web-based Wind Assessment System (WWAS). This system combines all the necessary resources for potential urban small wind turbine customers into a single web-based tool. The system also presents the concept of a modular wind measurement system, which couples with the WWAS to provide real-time wind data measurements. The benefits of the system include its ease of use, flexibility of installation, data accessibility from any web browser, and expert advice. The WWAS prevents potential clients from investing in a system that may not be viable for their location. In addition, a small wind turbine is designed in this project, which has a unique modular mounting system, allowing the same baseline wind turbine to attach to various structures using interchangeable mounting hardware. This includes such accessible urban structures as street lights, building corners, flag poles, and building walls, among others. This design also utilizes concepts that address some of the challenges associated with mounting small wind turbines to existing urban structures. These concepts include: swept tip blades and lower RPM to reduce noise; vibration suppression using rubber shims; a netted duct to protect wildlife; and a direct-drive permanent magnet generator to ensure low starting torque. Finally, the cost of this system is calculated using off-the-shelf components, which minimize testing and certification expense. This small wind turbine system is designed to be grid-connected, has a 6 foot diameter rotor, and is rated at 1 kW. This design features a unique modular interchangeable mounting system. The cost for this complete system is estimated to be $2,050. If a users' site has an average wind speed of 14 mph (6.5 m/s), this system will generate a return on investment in 8.5 years, leaving over 10 years of profit. The profit for this system, at this sample average wind speed, yields over $4,000 during its 20-year design life, which is a two-fold return on investment. This project has implications for various stakeholders in the small wind turbine market, including designers, engineers, manufacturers, and potential customers. Equally important is its potential role in guiding our future national--even global--energy agenda.

Abstract:
The subject of this diploma thesis is a project of a new town hall for the district of Brno - sever. Current town hall is situated in the inconvenient building on the Bratislavská street and few decentralised offices are located in separate places. The project should solve current problems as well as to follow current trends in contemporary town hall design. Town halls of these days must cover many functions, not only the accommodation of local government, but also to be the actual centre of the town - the centre of culture, economy and services. The new town hall building is located on corner plot of land in the compound of old Brno Černá Pole barracks. The building provides leasable commercial units as well as office space for the municipal government.

Abstract:
The study analyses the American neo-avantgarde as well as the narratives of Swedish post World War II art history, through a specific subject position. The Swedish painter Barbro Östlihn (1930-1995) lived in New York from 1961, where her work was exhibited and received on a new art scene. Despite the strong focus within Swedish Art History on the 1960’s and the American art scene, Östlihn seems to be marginalized in its narratives. Studies of selected corpora of American art criticism, and of segments in the Swedish art scene in the 1960’s are maintained. Discursive and field-related mechanisms, which help to explain what positions were available, are revealed. Transnational processes of avant-garde culture between Manhattan and Stockholm are discussed, e.g. through an analysis of the American pop art show at Moderna Museet in 1964. This becomes the backdrop for the final chapter’s discussion of the narratives in post World War II Art History in Sweden. In the interpretation of Östlihn’s work-process, her use of photography is understood as a strategy to connect her painterly work with urban space. The painterly and the photographic are merged, as in other artistic practices in a historical moment of crisis in painting. The studio, the site where modes of art production are constructed, is one point of departure in a spatial analysis of the art field. Another is the ongoing urban renewal on Lower Manhattan and its impact on artistic work and on how artists are positioned. Östlihn’s co-operation in the work of her husband Öyvind Fahlström, is understood as a merging of a traditional division of work between genders, and new co-operative modes of art-production. The study is the first academic work on Barbro Östlihn, and covers the time span 1960-1969. Feminist theory, Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory and Michel Foucault's discourse theory is used as its main framework.

This thesis is based on sustainable urbandevelopment and focuses particularlyon social sustainability, but also economicsustainability. The thesis addresseswhether the physical structure (streets, buildings, parks, roads) and land use (venues, function mixing, activity areas) cansupport crime prevention and reduce thefear of crime and the context for thissurvey is Herrgården in Malmö, Sweden. Basedon the theoretical principles; humanscale, populated urban space, natural surveillanceand management an understandingof the relationship between physical environment, crime and fear of crime is derived.A status report and a sustainabilityanalysis of the situation in the Herrgårdenis made. The area Herrgården is mappedand analyzed through an observationschedule based on the theoretical principles. The analysis of the physical structureis complemented by crime statistics, analysis of hotspots` geographic positiontogether with input from the security survey.Interviews with people working in thearea complements the study. The sustainability analysis shows thatHerrgården is a vulnerable and weak resourcearea and the residents lacks anchoringto the community by their low participation. The inhabitants of Herrgårdenfeel a low degree of satisfaction, trust, and collective strength, lowest for thedistrict.Furthermore, residents in Herrgården statethat they feel a high level of fear ofcrime and a high proportion of residentsrefrain activities due to fear of crime, although victimization is not remarkablyhigh.Analysis of the physical structure andland use based on the principles of thetheory; human scale, populated urban spaces, natural surveillance and managementshows that there still is much to do.The analysis of crime statistics shows threedistinctive hot spots in the area;Rosengårdsskolan, area with the allotmentsand the old mansion of Rosengård(today Drömmarnas hus, multiactivities forchildren and young). The sustainability analysis shows thatequality and participation in Herrgårdenneeds to be strengthened. In order to reducethe crime and the fear of crime in Herrgården efforts involving many stakeholdersand a broad collaboration, especiallyat the local level, is needed.Furthermore, it is necessary to have alocal connection to the residents especiallychildren and young people who make upa large proportion of the inhabitants. Tochange the physical structure to remainlong-term investment and not suffer fromvandalism and littering, it is importantthat people in the area have a voice andthe opportunity to make comments and suggestionsearly in the process. As part of the thesis a projectplan is established, aimed at strengthening primarilysocial but also economic sustainability, which includes developing a genericmodel for a local crime prevention andsecurity-building program that focus onphysical structure and land use, SAFE &SECURE. The project aims to reduce fear ofcrime and reduce opportunities for crimebut also to increase the equality and fullparticipation of people living and working.Keywords/tags: sustainable urban development, social sustainability, crime preventionand reduced fear of crime, urbanplanning, crime, safety, security, GIS,spatial planning, spatial analysis, landuse, populated urban space, city life, eyeson the street, participation, hot spots

Abstract:

This essay will discuss the planning and development of the city of Rome during the reign of Pope Sixtus V followed with a discussion of the significance of this development in the history of sixteenth century Rome. Pope Sixtus V acquired the help of a capable architect, Domenico Fontana (1543-1607), to create an interlinking road system by the end of the sixteenth century that connected churches in the east end of Rome to an earlier built road system connecting the west end of Rome to form a network of roads covering the entire city under this system. The innovative part of Pope Sixtus V’s planning for Rome was the inclusion of aqueduct leading to the west end of Rome, providing a convenient ways for more people to populate the less developed east end of Rome. This urban developing plan was invaluable to the development of a modern Rome. The legacy of former Popes from the sixteenth century pointed out a motif for Pope Sixtus V in developing the city of Rome. The sixteenth century popes had been striving to improve traffic condition, scenery, and functionality of the city through designing networks of roads. The process started in west end of Rome because it was more heavily populated with problems needing urgent fixes. Then this process gradually spread east into the barren part of Rome. Pope Sixtus V took the experiences from his predecessor and created an elaborated network road system and carefully designed urban scenery in the east end of Rome. The road system Pope Sixtus V created not only helped the citizens of Rome, it also contributed to the safety and convenience of the pilgrims. This transformation of Rome in a positive way was the proof that popes did make contributions to Christianity at the time. Therefore, the planning of the east end of Rome and the interlinking network of roads during the sixteenth century served as a practical, beautiful, and even popular public infrastructure.

Abstract:
Detroit continues to stand out as emblematic of failing urban economies, infrastructure, density, and form. But its spatially dominant urban relationships also provide the opportunity required to transform unsustainable, expanding megalopolises. Taking lead from the recently established Detroit Works Project, De-Center transforms existing urban conditions to propose a network of urban islands that respond to the extreme conditions created through modern planning. It demands that architecture and urbanism act as a single project.

In general, migration always affect quality of environment. Change in population and space caused by migration also affects quality of life and the integrated development. The study tries to examine such phenomena. Factor analysis and cluster analysis techniques are applied in the study to classify, in terms of pattern of urban development, towns and cities of Changhua County. Some cities of Changhua City for each pattern were picked to undergo testifying analysis. The steps are: 1.delineate the change in space of neighbor hoods from 1976 to 1991 by reading and mapping birdview photographs; 2. outline the relationships between scale of urban development and population change, and between change of traits of urban development and population change by comparing and analyzing population change data, 3. define the relationship between migration and industry development using characteristics of population, economic development and urbanization as indicators. The results show that the urban development patterns have the following characteristics : the stronger the centralization, the higher the grading of space scale, and the larger the development rate and population density; city space may expand rapidly initially , but more and more gently thereafter , and this well applies to the change of population density too; close-type cities are affected less by main roads, same as the population growth, which means not too much change occured in the city as a whole; space of less-developed cities grows slowly, so does the population density. Grading of space scale of less-developed cities remains the lowest.

Abstract: This work presents an approach for the revitalization of vacant and neglected buildings and spaces, introducing the use of a pop-up architecture with a temporary and cultural character. These environments are characterized by episodes or events that appear suddenly and have a limited period of use, which may appear in one space and re-appear in another after a certain amount of time. The initial research establishes the bases for pop-up and temporary use of spaces, while pointing its potential. In order to focus the program on a concept, we developed the study with a focus on urban markets as they are known for their itinerant character and are now in decay of their original context, given the emergence of new forms of consumption, more static and centralized. It is intended to redefine the market's concept, combining trading with a cultural program that arouses interest and interaction in the places where it is located. Through the analysis of case studies it will be possible to demonstrate the temporary use's strategies relating it to the social environment in which it operates. When presenting possibilities for redefining objectives through ephemeral architecture with temporary and temporary uses, there is an opportunity for renovation, avoiding the dependence on massive (re) constructions, thus sustaining the heritage of a city. The strategic approach of the practical essay will support the transition space and present provisional projects, which have the possibility of using space as a secondary mean, while a more primary use of space is under development. The architectural elements that contributed most to these new strategies and dynamics are the cultural and artistic equipments. These programs, evolving from their classic configuration of instruction to the contemporary configuration of persuasion, see their development invested in a visual and symbolic performance. It's new role will be to attract the visitor.

We currently live in an era in which the concern around ecology and sustainability is of utmost importance. In all the different areas of knowledge, it is urgent to make this concern a priority and to adapt our societies lives to a more sustainable reality at all levels: ecology, social and economic. The use of the individual transportation methods as the main form of transportation, along with the demographic growth, has brought chaotic scenarios to cities. Therefore, it is necessary to rethink mobility within them to consequently improve the quality of life to all citizens. Specifically focusing to the city of Braga, the project will consist in, after an analysis about the mobility within the city and the structural and demographic evolution the city had over the years, making a proposal to improve and restructure the mobility system in order to align the city’s profile with the requirements towards a more sustainable future.

The warning message that planet earth is about to be depleted of its precious resources gave birth to global industrial pursuit of “sustainable development.” “Sustainable design” that effectively integrates energies and reduces environmental destruction will be the primary development strategy to keep up with the green environment movement and intensify global competitiveness. For major urban scenic arteries, his study integrates scattered urban information facilities, such as street lights, traffic lights, road signs, traffic signs and pedestrian count-down lights, in a modularized street-light set through flexible approaches. Thereby, it beautifies the views of a city and creates urban landscapes that carry local features of a particular metropolitan area. Based on the design concept of “sustainable development,” this study first explores various dimensions including beautification of shared-pole street lights, regional landscapes, and legal provisions pertinent to installation of street lights. It identifies design requirements and concerns of shared-pole street lights as basis and reference for design of shared-pole street lights. Two types of shared-pole street lights of two different creative concepts are developed accordingly for comparison, analysis and individual production cost estimate in order to understand whether the shared-pole street light designed for this study can better meet the requirement of current major urban arteries and serve as design reference for future designers of shared-pole street lights.
