Duffy, Bernadette. "The values formation of children growing up in an informal settlement." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24362.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the phenomena of pre-adolescents growing up in an informal settlement and explored how needs and wants influenced their value and moral formation. The research was located within the specific context of a qualitative interpretivist study. A phenomenological research design was used to highlight how these young people construct their personal identities rooted in their unique value and moral structures. The criteria used to choose the participants included pre-adolescents between the ages of 10 and 14 who lived alone without parental care or who were left alone for long periods during the day. The selected participants were young people who were daily exposed to adverse conditions and who had to make real life choices. Data on how these pre-adolescents viewed their situation were collected using stick figures, collages, drawings and observations, followed by in-depth individual and focus group interviews and discussions on moral dilemmas. The aim of interviewing the young people personally was to explore their own views of the realities of their lived experiences and how they perceived the world around them. From the empirical evidence and the theories studied a number of significant themes emerged that indicated a strong need for emotional and social support, besides their obvious material needs. The major themes were (1) family and community, (2) emotional needs, (3) financial and material needs, (4) protection and security, (5) moral choices and needs, (6) education and (7) religion. The findings of the study revealed that individuals progress through various stages of moral growth and development as they grow from childhood to adulthood, and that children are not born with an innate moral or value system. These have to be taught through the process of socialisation whereby they learn social values, morals, attitudes and expectations as these are communicated from one person to another. The findings also showed that these young people are able to act in a caring, concerned, altruistic and resilient manner, just as much as they are able to act in a destructive manner. These young people are as able to do good just as they are able to do bad things. They have a strong sense of moral rightness and wrongness and the values that underpin morality. It showed that even when their basic human needs are unmet they can still make choices that reflect good moral values. They have the capacity to transcend themselves and to make radical change in their personal lives and in turn contribute to the well being of a better society. Since this was an exploratory study of specific marginalised young people in a particular environment which focused more on pre-adolescents’ espoused theory and how they would act if faced by moral dilemmas, it suggests the need for further exploration and research on the theory in action by studying the reasons why preadolescents engage in at-risk behaviour.
Antimicrobial peptides are important components of defense system in various organizations against possible invaders. They are generally small (100 aminoacids), cationic and amphipathic. They have stimulated the interest of the scientific community for its ability to act against microbes that cannot develop resistance to these peptides. That is, they emerge as complement and/or alternative to the use of conventional antibiotics. This study developed a computational model of a hybrid peptide pediocin A (Nterminal) and plantaricin 149a (C-terminal), two bactericidal peptides. Experimental data obtained by the group of prof. Dr. Rosângela Itri (IFUSP) were used for modeling and compare the results. MD simulations were made of the peptide interacting with pure and mixed POPC and POPG membranes. These simulations were performed using the parameters of the force field GROMOS 53A6 and 54A7. Simulations with a single copy of the peptide revealed that the force field 54A7 was the most appropriate for modeling these systems. The secondary structure maps showed that the peptide acquires a more ordered configuration when interacting with membranes with higher amounts of POPG in its composition. The simulations with two copies of the peptide suggest that the peptide interacts and penetrates the POPG layer via the C-terminal part. In the simulation with POPC membrane, none of the end portions remained stable within the membrane. The effect of increasing the peptide concentration of was examined by placing five and ten copies of the peptide to interact with the membranes. In the POPC membrane, the peptides do not form a single cluster and they cause little disturbance in the bilayer. In the POPG membrane, the interaction of peptides cluster is enhanced, causing large deformation and practically destroying the lipid bilayer. This phenomenon suggests a possible carpet mechanism of action of the peptide on the phospholipid membrane of bacteria.

Hay-Whitton, Alexander Mark. "Pope's portraiture : a critical examination of portraiture in the poetry of Alexander Pope." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/21879.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 202-210.
This work examines and critically evaluates what the author considers to be the chief concerns of Pope's verse portraits, and particularly attempts to trace the manifestations of these concerns in the formal, rather than argumentative or polemic, qualities of Pope's writing. The works selected have accordingly been primarily those in which the density of poetic description of character was sufficient to indicate implicit qualities of psychological interest, sometimes at remarkable variance with more express argument of contemporary theories. Starting from an initial agreement with Dr Johnson concerning Pope's shortcomings as a philosopher, the author chooses works for detailed study on the basis of the various ways they present human types and characters: through a semi-dramatic narrative presentation, through brief life-histories, through descriptive character-sketches, or through implication of character by environment. The author bases much of his work on the idea of a dual interest in Pope's verse, which is partly satiric and aimed at moral.or social correction, partly humorous and aimed at examination or elucidation of human nature. The Dunciad and An Essay on Man are examples of the two interests as opposite extremes; but in most of Pope's work, the author maintains, the functions are complementary.

Zorich, Jonathan P. "Alexander VI: Renaissance Pope." PDXScholar, 1996. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/5213.

Full text
Abstract:
The life of Pope Alexander VI has been the object of controversy for centuries. He has often been portrayed in terms of moral extremes. Those historians who have been critical of his methods and motives have depicted the Borgia pope as evil incarnate. For them, Alexander VI was the ultimate symbol of papal corruption. Those historians sympathetic with the church have claimed that Alexander was a slandered and misunderstood figure. In reality, Alexander VI could most accurately be described as temporal prince so typical of the Renaissance. In many respects, he was no better or worse than any other pontiff of his age. Of all the so-called secular popes, Alexander VI has been singled out as a figure of exceptional immorality and corruptibility. Unlike some orthodox Roman catholic authors determined to completely whitewash the pontificate Alexander VI and the Renaissance papacy, my aim is to engage in an impartial critique of the existing evidence. We will see that Alexander VI was a typical pope of the Renaissance, obsessed with temporal concerns, sometimes at the expense of his duties as head of the Roman catholic Church. He was also a man completely devoted to the advancement of his family, making sure that every member of the House of Borgia was achieved the highest level of power and influence. In spite of the justified charges of nepotism, many historians have repeated many of the false tales regarding Alexander's personal character. These will be shown to based on little more than unsubstantiated rumor and innuendo.

Clingham, G. J. H. "Johnson on Dryden and Pope." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1986. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.232978.

Full text
Abstract:
This work argues that a misunderstanding of the structure and content of Johnson's literary biography has prevented us from seeing that the Lives of Dryden and Pope are profound and challenging criticism. Inappropriate generic and historical criteria have been imposed on the Lives of the Poets so that the relation between biography and criticism has falsely been seen as discontinuous, and, concomitantly, Johnson's central, animating critical value of Nature has been defined solely in terms of neoclassical formalism, or, at best, associated with psychological value. As a preliminary to a discussion of the Lives of Dryden and Pope I demonstrate how (i) Johnson focuses in Nature an experience of life which is distinguished from the commonplace but which is also deeper than psychology; and (ii) that Nature is rooted in a religious experience associated but not absolutely equated with Christianity and which provides Johnson with a conception of memory to mitigate his sceptical sense of the discrepancy between the intentions and achievements of a writer. With reference to the Lives of Milton, Butler, Rochester and Parnell, I discuss how the structures of the Lives work to trace the way a poet realises his own genius, and how Johnson's thought operates redemptively to establish a memory for the poet who does not. Two large, related chapters apply this knowledge of Johnson's literary biography in detailed analysis of his encounter with the lives and works of Dryden and Pope. Modern and contemporary criticism is compared to Johnson's understanding of Dryden's translations -- in which, I argue, Johnson finds Dryden's genius most fully realised -- and of Pope's Rape of the Lock and Iliad Book I, and what they reveal of Pope's mind and his relation to his art. These Lives indicate (i) that the continuity of past with present embodied so attractively in Dryden's translations is informed by his Catholicism and reveals Nature; and (ii) that Pope's sacrifice of Nature maintained the integrity of his personal character-and offered the age a refinement it sought -- but also revealed a split between art and Nature -- not characteristic of Dryden -- which made civilized writing problematic. In conclusion I briefly draw out Johnson's general historical position represented by his comparison of Dryden with Pope, as he looked back on the Lives of the Poets and on the previous century.

Pope, Jaric Ross. "Towards the poetics of the immediate experience." Thesis, Montana State University, 2010. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2010/pope/PopeJ0510.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The title of this thesis is 'Towards the Poetics of the Immediate Experience' because that should be the quest in attempting to embrace a process-relational worldview. In an attempting to create things we should embrace poetry because it begins to tap into our basic transcendental and mysterious way of experiencing the world. Our immediate and poetic experiences of the world are not only the beginnings of knowledge and reason, but by embracing poetry, we are also embracing a metaphysical and spiritual quality to the work. This pure way, which allows us to both create, experience, and know the world poetically is crucial to understanding a reality that is determined in each moment of 'becoming' and 'perishing' by what is in essence 'feelings'. By 'feeling' nature in its constant and flowing state of 'becoming' and 'perishing' we can begin to understand the 'true' nature of reality. The worldview that supports the universe as constantly in a state of 'becoming' and 'perishing', and interconnected is from process-relational thought. Acknowledging everything as determined by 'feelings', or what we as humans perceive as emotions, which are the true components of our poetic knowledge and found in our basic intuition, leads us to desire an architecture that is truly poetic and spiritual by evoking emotions from the dynamic changes found in nature.

Turner, Adam Chase. "Framing a Pope: Analyzing Media Frames in The New York Times Coverage of Pope Francis." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91391.

Full text
Abstract:
This study extends notions of framing theory by drawing from research analyzing the framing of Pope Francis within coverage from The New York Times. The mass media has, since the election of Pope Francis in 2013, provided him extensive coverage on a myriad of issues. Previous studies have noted Pope Francis' propensity to draw massive amounts of media attention towards his actions and statements, even noting the potential for Pope Francis to control the media narrative through his own implementation of frames. Drawing on framing theory, this study examines the ways in which coverage of Pope Francis is defined by The New York Times by finding relationships between the issues addressed in Papal coverage, the frames implemented within this coverage, the valence of the messages, and the presentation of Pope Francis himself. This thesis yields that coverage of Pope Francis within The New York Times has shifted from positive valence to primarily neutral valence when comparing the first three years of his papacy to second three years. The findings of this thesis could potentially inform future studies which may wish to determine potential for frame transfer due to the content of articles or for studies which may wish to delve deeper into the issue with a much larger sample.
Master of Arts
Since Pope Francis’ election, the mass media has focused heavily on his statements and actions. Previous literature attests to the notion that Pope Francis is unique among his predecessors when it comes to media coverage, primarily due to his propensity to make statements or moral recommendations that seemingly oppose or deviate from traditional Catholic values. This thesis explores the relationship between Pope Francis and the American mass media by analyzing 226 articles published by The New York Times within the first six years of his Papacy. The findings of this thesis point to notions related to the valence of Papal coverage, which began as primarily positive but have shifted in nature from the beginning of Francis’ Papacy. The findings of this thesis also point towards the religious nature of Papal coverage and also the potential for sexscandal coverage to shift representation of the Pope.

Baldwin, Philip Bruce. "Pope Gregory X and the crusades." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2012. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/2506.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the crusading movement during the reign of Pope Gregory X in the latter part of the thirteenth century, before the Latin presence in the Levant came to an end. It seeks to demonstrate the important position of this little-known pope, who formed the bridge between what can now be seen as two separate eras in the crusading period, namely, the era of the traditional passagium generale, and the ‘new’ era of the passagium particulare. To do this, it will study Western and Muslim sources to understand the condition of the Holy Land during Gregory’s pontificate to see the effect it had on the manner in which he organised his crusade, using both traditional and ‘new’ methods. By drawing on sources from crusading in Iberia, it will show that Gregory approached the crusade flexibly, and was not, as commonly described by historians, wholly obsessed with the Holy Land. It also seeks to dispel one of the more popular myths surrounding Gregory, which is that he wanted to change the government of the kingdom of Jerusalem by putting Charles of Anjou in charge there. A study of the Angevin chancery records – little used by crusade historians – will demonstrate that it was not Gregory’s idea, but rather Charles’ own. Finally, using Gregory’s papal registers and chronicle evidence, this study will attempt to imagine the crusade that would have occurred had Gregory not died prematurely. This includes a discussion of the unprecedented scope of its recruitment as evidence of Gregory’s exceptional ability as a crusade organiser, as well as the evidence and reasons for a dramatic change in direction away from Egypt.

Navsaria, Koneshverrie. "Pope John Paul II: a psychobiographical study." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/3539.

Full text
Abstract:
This psychobiography is focussed on the life of Pope John Paul II, whose historical personage epitomises the redemptive theme of triumph over tragedy and eternal hope. A phenomenological approach to the study allowed the researcher to observe the subject’s lived experience through the theoretical lens of Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory as well has having his faith development illuminated by Fowler’s faith development theory. Together, these theories highlighted significant aspects of Pope John Paul II’s personality development, for the greater purpose of uncovering the significance of his historical personage by reconciling his spiritual, political and academic attributes. This psychobiographical undertaking was grounded in qualitative research in the form of a single case. Two methodological strategies were used in this study. Firstly, Alexander’s model was used to organise, extract, prioritise and analyse data. The indicators of salience ensured that all significant parts of biographical data were carefully considered for analysis. Guba’s criteria for trustworthiness guided the methodology to ensure reliable data extraction and interpretation. Posing specific questions to the data enabled the researcher to extract units of analysis relevant to the aim of the study. Secondly, the use of conceptual frameworks and matrices enabled the longitudinal exploration, categorisation and description of the stages of psychosocial and faith development. The findings of this psychobiographical study of Pope John Paul II strongly support the importance of Erikson’s (1950) theory in understanding the processes of personality development in an individual life. In this psychobiographical study, the complex process of adaption and growth was highlighted by Erikson’s (1950) theory and placed periods of Pope John Paul II’s development in context. This study also demonstrated that gaining meaning in life through faith (Fowler, 1981) provides the individual with greater internal support when adjusting to life changes. Furthermore, greater intentionality on the part of therapists to thread faith and spirituality into their practice, is evidence of the eugraphic impact of this study.

Jones, T. "Alexander Pope and the vocabulary of Augustan criticism." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.605682.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis traces connections between late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century literary criticism, contemporary literary criticism and the poetry of Alexander Pope. I look at four topics: visual art, gender, finance and history. The thesis shows how vocabulary associated with each of these topics is used in Augustan literary criticism, contemporary literary criticism and Pope's verse. Vocabulary associated with the first three topics is frequently used in Augustan literary criticism to evaluate and judge literary works. In contemporary literary criticism, these vocabularies are used to provide a context in which to explain and criticise literature: the images produced by literature, the way in which literature relates to gender and gender politics, and the effect of economics on the production of literature are the dominant concerns of much of this writing. Augustan literary criticism is closely connected to the study of history, so closely that often no distinction is made between the two. Much recent criticism is also concerned to see literature as the product of historical forces. Pope wrote verse on all four of these topics. By offering readings of the relevant poems, I show how one of the fundamental questions of literary criticism, how meaning is produced in writing, may also be profitably put to the contextual material which literary criticism often provides as an answer to that question. I present the study of literature and literary criticism as the study of meaning. The thesis offers a summary of contextual approaches to Pope and to poetry in general, and presents much new work on the modes of Augustan literary criticism. It substantially alters the standard characterisation of the early eighteenth century as dominated by Locke's linguistic philosophy, analyses a broader and more challenging set of philosophical approaches to language, and demonstrates in close readings of verse the sophistication and seriousness of the poetic works of Pope and many other Augustan writers.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between Cypress Gardens and the state of Florida. Specifically, it focuses on how the creator of the park, Dick Pope, created his park after his own idealized vision of the state, and how he then promoted both his park and Florida as one and the same. The growth and later decline of Cypress Gardens follows trends in Florida's growth patterns and shifts in tourism. This study primarily uses a combination of newspaper sources and promotional pictures and other media from the park to explain how Pope attempted to make Cypress Gardens synonymous with Florida. In doing so, this paper presents a history of the park during the Pope family ownership (1935-1985), while also looking at the legacy of the park until 2004.

Smith, Andrew Philip. "Pope Leo IX 1049-1054 : a study of his Pontificate." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/30786/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis poses a simple but intriguing and powerful question. Can Pope Leo IX (1049-1054) continue to be described as a reforming or reform-minded pope? The approach taken rethinks Leo and rethinks reform and the analysis of each, taken together, leads to a fresh evaluation of what Leo did and how he went about it. This thesis focusses on his pontificate and is not a full life biographical portrait. The historiographical background of the last one hundred and thirty years is comprehensively analysed. This analysis shows that the descriptor of reform has been applied to Leo consistently over that period but that only one attempt has been made to define reform. This thesis puts forward a new definition of reform which is used to provide a framework for evaluation and for clarifying the answer to the thesis question. Leo’s extant papal letters and other sources provide the basis for a new and full analysis of what Leo actually did in his Synods. This analysis shows that Leo used his Synods for complex and multi-faceted purposes. These purposes were not so much to push a reform agenda but more to resolve disputes, to deal with simony and to deal with very many issues related to Church governance. Leo’s letters are also used to analyse afresh the reasons for his many journeys. The analysis shows that Leo’s journeys were undertaken for multiple reasons and were not specifically related to the long standing view that the journeys relate to Leo’s attempt to Europeanise the papacy. Finally the letters are utilised to ask questions of Leo’s overall policy approach to papal governance. This analysis puts forward new ideas about the team in the papal office and reveals a complex landscape of influences. Taken together these strands of analysis show a complex picture and highlight a new perception of Leo and that the long held premise of seeing Leo through the single prism of reform confuses and obscures the real nature of his policy approach and his pontificate. The conclusion of this thesis is that Leo can no longer be accurately described as a reforming pope but rather as an important one who was both a conservative and traditionalist. The implications of this for the grand narrative of the history of eleventh century Europe are considerable. The roles of the other principal actors need to be thought out afresh; the notion of reform itself needs to be reconsidered and the antecedents of the so-called Gregorian reform fall to be re-evaluated.

The disabled people are great persons because they are givers and not takers. They can teach us to live a life with joy and laughter in spite of the pain. Pope Francis is conscious that the cause of the pain has to do with a throw-away culture. That is why he always reminds everybody to hear the voices of our brothers and sisters who are poor, sick, marginalized. He wants to promote the culture of encounter because the culture of encounter is the opposite of the throw-away culture whose victims are precisely the weakest and most fragile human beings. To see the world through the lens of encounter is to realize a presence of a merciful God who first encounters us in love. Pope Francis encourages us to take the disabled person on as Good Samaritans, with solidarity, charity and mercy. He says that we don t have to fear of opening the doors and going out to encounter, serving with love and tenderness especially the disabled people because they are true resources of humanity.

Brunner, Melanie. "Pope John XXII and the Franciscan ideal of absolute poverty." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2006. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1095/.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis offers an investigation into Pope John XXII's view of the Franciscan poverty ideal and his reasons for rejecting the doctrine of the absolute poverty of Christ in the bull Cum inter nonnullos (1323). After establishing the state of the question in the introduction, the first two chapters situate John XXII's discussion of Franciscan poverty in the context of his pontificate and the process of decisionmaking at the curia. Chapter I presents a historical overview of the course of the poverty controversy and of the curial debate, while chapter II focuses on the development of the pope's approach to some of the issues he encountered during his pontificate. This chapter examines John's legal training, his suppression of the Franciscan Spirituals and the role of the Spiritual crisis in shaping his view of Franciscan poverty. I also compare the pope's treatment of the Spirituals to his reform of the order of Grandmont. The Spiritual crisis can be interpreted as having focused the pope's attention on the implications of the Franciscan poverty ideal for the structure of the church, and chapter III therefore moves to a discussion of the ecclesiological implications of Franciscan poverty and John's reaction to this (potential) threat. It is shown, however, that the pope's unease about the Franciscan ideal went beyond the ecclesiological problems posed by the Franciscan order, and the final two chapters turn to a discussion of John's specifically theological and legal objections to the Franciscan poverty ideal as they are set out in his Franciscan bulls. Chapter IV examines the theological reasons behind the pope's condemnation of the Franciscan ideal and especially his discussion of the scriptural title of Franciscan poverty. It is demonstrated that the pope rejected the idea that evangelical and apostolic poverty could be defined as non-ownership of material goods. Chapter V then explores John's discussion of dominium and the Franciscan ideal from a legal perspective. John's definition of dominium as an essential part of the human condition marks his most fundamental disagreement with the Franciscan order, and I suggest that this disagreement over the role of dominium in the history of salvation was at the heart of John XXII's unease about the Franciscan poverty ideal.

The formal unification of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, and the later addition of the Roman capital in 1870, sparked criticism from Papal authorities and fostered a growing secularist sentiment among royal political leaders. Yet the Kingdom of Italy also sought to mediate those differences, having formed a liberal constitutional monarchy under the former King of Savoy, Carlo Alberto (and later, his son, Vittorio Emanuele II). This thesis will address the urban manifestation of the conflicted relationship between the Papacy and the new royal government of the Kingdom of Italy in Rome, with a particular regard for the manner in which the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II portrays the Risorgimento king. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II also serves as the means by which French and British models operative in Italy can be evaluated, with the consequences of this urban intervention analyzed in relation to the particular practice of conservation employed in Italy at the conclusion of the nineteenth-century. The history of this urban intervention will first be indexed against three successive periods in the royal Italian government (the Destra, Sinistra, and Giolittian parliaments), all of which proposed differing visions for the new capital. The history of Roman urban planning will then be considered with regard to the pre-Risorgimento initiatives of Pope Pius IX and Cardinal Merode, the municipal :Development Plan of 1873, and the later royal Development Plan of 1883 (the plan that generally defined the avenue's construction).
(cont.) The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II will then be investigated in greater depth, paying particular attention to the Development Plans of 1873 and 1883, the official Variant of 1886 (which was actually built), and a selection of other unofficial counterproposals. The intention is to demonstrate that the Italian admiration for British political and conservation models- which do have a common philosophical basis-were somewhat contradictory in application, resulting in a uniquely modern approach to urbanism in Rome and a surprisingly respectful treatment of ecclesiastical structures (even despite the ongoing conflict between Papal and royal authorities).

This paper analyzes Pope Francis’s view of politics, particularly politics in the United States. Beginning with his speech before a special joint session of Congress on September 24, 2015, this paper explores many of the themes the Pope introduces in this speech, and compares those themes to those in other works he has published since being elected Pontiff in 2013. Then, this paper applies what he has said about contemporary American politics with the analysis of other scholars of American politics. Ultimately, I find that the Pope is very aware of problems in the United States, but hopes to present a positive alternative to address what he identifies as the contemporary world’s ills

Abstract:
This thesis examines the transformation of gender identity in the early eighteenth century; it demonstrates the ways in which the entry of women into print culture destabilized traditional gender norms; and it demonstrates the effect of such changes upon the life and poetry of Alexander Pope. The first chapter, which is mainly historical, contextualizes women's participation in print culture. It describes how their presence in print signified gender as an artificial or socially constructed category (as opposed to traditional notions of it as absolute and essential). The second chapter surveys various poetry and correspondence of Alexander Pope in order to demonstrate the difficulties and anxieties experienced by Pope as he attempts to deal with fluctuating gender codes of the day. He requires a stable notion of the private feminine Other in order to establish his masculine and public self, yet it is shown that Pope is inexorably linked with the feminine Other from which he endeavours to distance himself; thereby, he unwittingly contributes to the slippage of these terms. The third chapter ties together all the issues discussed in the previous two chapters through a close reading of The Dunciad. Pope's anxiety about gender identity is revealed: he represents his culture, especially literary culture, as having fallen into "feminization" because it has ostensibly rejected masculine values in preference to feminine ones. The reign of Queen Dulness engenders the conditions whereby the body has enslaved the mind, madness has overpowered reason and empty rhetoric has replaced meaningful language. Although Pope attempts to distance himself from all that he represents as corrupt and effeminate in The Dunciad, he is, nevertheless, implicated in the perversion of the very patriarchal systems which he is attempting to uphold. Wilmoth, Traci Carol. "The Role of Richard Savage in Composing Pope's Dunciad." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32080.

Full text
Abstract:
Murderer, bastard, spy: Richard Savage was no stranger to scandal and controversy. And yet, for a man who lived such a varied life, little is known for certain about him. There are rumors, suggestions, and accusations, but little that can be said without debates and arguments. It certainly does not help that Savage is often marginalized in eighteenth-century scholarship as scholars seek to discover and analyze all they can about his more famous, and more upstanding, contemporaries. While Savage's relationship with Johnson is well known and discussed frequently, all that is known of his relationship with Pope is that he contributed information to Popeâ s Dunciad Variorum (1729) and that Pope later contributed large sums to Savage's support. Pope was the driving force behind Savageâ s retirement to Wales, possibly alluded to in Johnsonâ s London (1738), as well as the chief financial contributor to this retirement plan. No serious effort has been made to connect these two important episodes in Savage's life, perhaps because no serious effort has been made to establish the extent of his involvement with the Dunciad. It may have been this connection with Pope that drew Johnson to Savage in the first place. The intent of this thesis is to clarify the nature of Savageâ s collaborations with Pope and the extent of his contributions to the Dunciad Variorum of 1729. The Dunciad seeks to make fun not only of Popeâ s critics, but of writers who write for bread, the â hack writersâ of Grub Street. It was here that Pope would most likely turn to Savage for information; Savage was much better acquainted with those writers than was Pope. But Savage may have done more than simply supply Pope with gossip, and I will consider the possibility that he had a more active role in the publication of the Dunciad Variorum.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation analyses taste, the conceptually vague discriminator of judgement, as it related to the numerous proposed strategies for evaluating creative writing between the Restoration and Alexander Pope's death in 1744. It investigates discussions about literature before the well-known efforts, such as Samuel Johnson's Lives of the Poets (1779-81), to elevate certain authors as exemplars of English writing. The raison d'etre of an authoritative system for judging literature was to restrain personal whim and prejudice by guiding individuals towards a specific manner or appreciation.
