Reid, George. "Popes, politicians and political theory: The principle of subsidiarity in 20th century European history." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/27018.

Full text
Abstract:
The transformation of the principle of subsidiarity from a philosophical principle in Catholic social teachings to a constitutional article in the 1992 Treaty on European Union has been a source of confusion for scholars of European integration. Political scientists have examined subsidiarity from the perspective of political philosophy to account for its transformation and to determine its impact on European integration. However, no attempt has been made to anchor the emergence of subsidiarity in a historical context. This thesis employs a historical approach to analyze the transformation of subsidiarity. It examines the political struggles surrounding the principle in the Catholic Church, in German Christian Democracy, and in the debates over European Union in the European Community. It concludes that the transformation of subsidiarity occurred during the debates over the European Union that began in the 1970s and culminated in the ratification of the 1992 Maastricht treaty on European Union.

Sachet, Paolo. "Publishing for the Popes : the cultural policy of the Catholic Church towards printing in sixteenth-century Rome." Thesis, School of Advanced Study, University of London, 2015. http://sas-space.sas.ac.uk/6354/.

Full text
Abstract:
Printing had a huge impact on the development of religion and politics in sixteenth-century Europe. Harnessing the printing press is generally regarded as a key factor in the success of the Reformation. The positive role played by printing in Catholic cultural policy, by contrast, has not been sufficiently recognized. While scholars have focused on ecclesiastical censorship, the employment of print by Catholic authorities – especially the Roman curia – has been addressed only sporadically and superficially. The aim of my dissertation is to fill this gap, providing a detailed picture of the papacy’s efforts to exploit the resources of the Roman printing industry after the Sack in 1527 and before the establishment of the Vatican Typography in 1587. After a brief introduction (Chapter 1), I provide an exhaustive account of the papacy’s attempts, over sixty years, to set up a Roman papal press (Chapter 2). I then focus on two main Catholic printing enterprises. Part I is devoted to the editorial activity of Cardinal Marcello Cervini, later Pope Marcellus II. I discuss the extant sources and earlier scholarship on Cervini (Chapter 3), his cultural profile (Chapter 4) and the Greek and Latin presses which he established in the early 1540s (Chapters 5 - 6). Part II concentrates on the projects for a papal press involving the Venetian printer Paolo Manuzio. After an overview of the sources and previous studies (Chapter 7), I analyse Manuzio’s attempts to move to Rome, the establishment of a papal press under his management and the committee of cardinals which supervised it (Chapters 8 - 10). Chapter 11 examines the printing of the first edition of the Tridentine decrees, undertaken in 1564. Chapter 12 contains the overall conclusion to the dissertation. Documentary Appendixes A and B list the publications sponsored by Cervini and the books printed by Manuzio’s Roman press.

"Which simulacrum of Pope does the Paulista press media build when showing us the leaders of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church after its respective elections?" That problematic guides the present dissertation. Using a corpus from "O Estado de S. Paulo" newspaper pages and the "Folha de São Paulo" in a 135 period of years, it is possible to analyze how this media plans a typology confronting its own values with the ones from the Catholic Church, which shows the thematic role of the Pope. The hypothesis is that the newspaper shows ways of presence for each Pope according to their own interests, trying to deceive the image of the elected Cardinal. Still, in a new perspective of the new theory that despite the restrictions of the Church, the simulacrum carries a way of being in the World deceived by individual characteristics from each Cardinal that is elected - in a syncretism of destinators. This investigation aims to deepen the reflection about language syncretism in the truths of the analyzed pages. On one hand, the Church as a destinator schedules the thematic route for the Popes. This route is lived by one Cardinal, himself as a destinator. In the Saint Peter Basilica balcony, these routes unify themselves and are projected for the World. Captured by the media, the scene is reorganized in another way through the newspaper pages by the language syncretism - verbal, visual and spacial. The theoretical foundation is the Discursive Semiotic, created by Algirdas Greimas and its unfolding in the Social Semiotics by Eric Landowski. It is taken to consideration the Plastic Semiotic, organized by Jean Marie Floch and build on by Ana Claudia Oliveira, especially in the studies of esthesia that make us feel the new Pope. The results aim to the possibility of a link between the simulacrum typologies built by the medias with interaction and risks, showing in the media projection the Catholic leaders and that there is a predominance in the hazards of accidents that reveals a dynamic by visibility. The new is, in fact, a figurativization of the new that remains in its depths with the intentionality and propagations of the Church's old speech

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 202-210.
This work examines and critically evaluates what the author considers to be the chief concerns of Pope's verse portraits, and particularly attempts to trace the manifestations of these concerns in the formal, rather than argumentative or polemic, qualities of Pope's writing. The works selected have accordingly been primarily those in which the density of poetic description of character was sufficient to indicate implicit qualities of psychological interest, sometimes at remarkable variance with more express argument of contemporary theories. Starting from an initial agreement with Dr Johnson concerning Pope's shortcomings as a philosopher, the author chooses works for detailed study on the basis of the various ways they present human types and characters: through a semi-dramatic narrative presentation, through brief life-histories, through descriptive character-sketches, or through implication of character by environment. The author bases much of his work on the idea of a dual interest in Pope's verse, which is partly satiric and aimed at moral.or social correction, partly humorous and aimed at examination or elucidation of human nature. The Dunciad and An Essay on Man are examples of the two interests as opposite extremes; but in most of Pope's work, the author maintains, the functions are complementary.

Abstract:
John Dalberg Acton, a German-educated historian, rose to prominence in late Victorian England is an editor of The Rambler and a leader of the Liberal Catholic Movement. His struggle against Ultramontanism reached its climax at the Vatican Council, 1869-1870, which endorsed the dogma of Papal Infallibility and effectively ended the Liberal Catholic Movement. Acton's position on the Vatican Decrees remained equivocal until the Gladstone controversy of 1874 forced him to take a stand, but even his statement of submission failed to satisfy some Ultramontanists. This study, based largely on Acton's published letters and essays, concludes that obedience to Rome did not contradict his advocacy of freedom of conscience, which also placed limits on Papal Infallibility.

Clement, Claire. "Médecine et milieu médical à la cour pontificale d’Avignon (1305-1413)." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Avignon, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023AVIG1011.

Full text
Abstract:
How can one caracterize the medical social environment that is progressively emerging in the Avignon region after the papecy established its siege in the city? This question is directing this thesis work, willing to closely scrutinize the actors of this medical socialization. Barbers, surgeons, apothecaries and of course doctors constitute the main protagonists of this study. By establishing a prosopography of 324 Avignon’s health actors, the objective is to replace those actors in their context. The micro-history approach allows us to observe how those practitioners progressively formed a profession. Crossing the sources of practice and the intellectualproductions gives an insight on the close connections existing between the academic medicine – the medicine of treatises and diets – and the reality of the Avignon medical market. In the first place, the social demand of care is coming from the popes and the cardinals. Recruiting academic practitioners with a solid reputation is now becoming a symbol of prestige. Their presence in court is also nourishing the interests of political authorities for the commonweal. We will therefore try to underline the connections between court’s physicians and the ones who practice within the city. Those two figures have frequently been opposed but both of them interact and practice on the same ground. All these elements are attesting the progressive integration of the medical field in society that we can consider as a first form of “medicalization”. After analyzing the characteristics and practices of the Avignon medicalenvironment, we can study it facing major events. The Great Plague and its frequent outbreaks in the 14th century allow the practitioners to spread their intervention field in the city. Subsequently, the plague is an important accelerator of the medical professionalization. In the after-plague period, the collaboration between the health actors and the authorities strengthens. The physician progressively becomes a figure of authority and his expertise exceeds the scope of epidemics. Medicine is therefore an opportunity to integrate court and pope’s and prelates’ domesticity; revealing a seek for social elevation from actors willing to practice their art at the highest level and collect benefits from it

Abstract: Curriculum-hypertexts-pops assumes, in its writing as a thesis, the banality, the ordinary and the common to which the scholastic cultures are sent, in their space-temporal rhythms? It faces this condition of educational practices that are set in motion in three schools, with teachers with different experiences, with educational projects in multiplicities. It is a thesis that inverts in the chaos. And it is made effective on it. The work with concepts of Gilles Deleuze, in the thesis, puts them into fluxes to the curriculum field studies, invading it with attrition. It is not a relaxed chatting, with open channels to dialogue, to the hospitality. It was worked under barbarism, it was necessary to make from the curriculum passage to a violent and deconstructive multitude. The option was to let empty the fluxes of the most common and powerful in the curricular thinking of the school: its organization into spaces and times of the modernity, its centrality in contents, its expectation to communicate to teach. The potentialities of the meeting of the curriculum with the ¿Deleuzian¿ times are, in this thesis, the disturbance of the relations between school and cultures. They are also the draw, lines of ¿story¿ to let curricular politics be considered artistic esthetics

Abstract:
Jerome McGann observes that 'Deceptive apparitions haunt romantic writing'. This thesis investigates one such haunting apparition; it analyses the ways in which selected eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century poets engage with the poetry of Alexander Pope. The received view of "Romantic" anti-Popeanism is expressed in comments such as that of William Hazlitt's 'I do not think there is any point of sympathy between Pope and the Lake School: on the contrary, I know there is an antipathy between them'. There is plenty of evidence to suggest some Romantic writers had an aversion to the previous literary age. In a letter to his brother and sister-in-law in March 1819, for example, Keats reviews a play by mocking that it 'was bad even in comparison with ... the Augustan age'. Pope had been the pre-eminent figure of Augustan poetry. Hence, the argument runs, Pope was rejected wholesale by Romantic poets. Such an understanding of literary history is, however, too dogmatic. Rather than accepting the view that the progression from Pope's era to the Romantic period involved a sudden pivot in taste, I explore how Popean poetic principles filtered into the development of his successors' literary aesthetics and ideas about poetry. The central questions I ask are how, and in what ways, Pope's successors used Pope's poetry to formulate their own poetic visions. I address these questions in four main chapters. In the first, I analyse Joseph Warton's An Essay on the Writings and Genius of Pope. I show that Warton's Essay on Pope should not be taken as a denigration of Pope's poetic achievement, and suggest ways in which Pope's work permeates his, and his brother Thomas', poetry. In the second, I examine the response to Pope's Iliad, a text which prompted conflicting reactions among his successors. In particular, I appraise William Cowper's response to Pope's translation, not only as contained in his prose discussion of it, but also as revealed by his own translation. My third chapter considers ways in which Wordsworth plays with Pope's poetic legacy, and acknowledges Pope's contribution to the formulation of his own ideas of what constitutes good poetry. In the final chapter, I illustrate that even in the poetry of Keats - who, at times, vociferously rejects Pope as a mere handicraftsman - there is a sympathy in song between brother-poets. Literary criticism has often stressed the prominence of authors such as Lord Byron, Erasmus Darwin and George Crabbe in Pope's poetic reception and legacy. Yet Pope haunts other writers in subtler, but no less compelling, ways. As Samuel Taylor Coleridge observes, in Biographia Literaria, 'many ... formed ... their notions of poetry, from the writings of Mr. Pope'. What I try to give colour to here are some of the ways in which subsequent 'notions of poetry' were 'formed' from 'the writings of Mr. Pope'.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to nd types of curves which would allow for the construction of a path that could be traversed by a vehicle. It seems that a minimal constraint for such a path is the continuity of curve's curvature. This leads to a closer look at the three types of curves: Clothoids, which are able to smoothly connect straights with arcs of a constant curvature, interpolation quintic splines, which are C2 smooth in the interpolation nodes and -splines, these belong to the family of quintic polynomial curves too, however, they are characterised by the vector of parameters which modies the shape of the curve. The thesis is accompanied by an application allowing for manual construction of the path composed of spline curves.

Walsh, Tim J. "Capillary properties of model pores." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1989. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/10469.

Full text
Abstract:
Liquid menisci in small pores exhibit a curved surface across which there is a significant pressure difference. The capillary properties of such surfaces are important in many areas of science and technology. Pores of uniform section can be broadly classified according to whether the perimeter is smooth (as in cylindrical tubes) or angular (as in triangular tubes). A meniscus that is entirely bounded by the pore walls has a curvature that is inversely proportional to the tubes' hydraulic radius. A meniscus in an angular tube, however, has liquid wedges in the corners and this reduces the effective area of the pore. In the past it has been difficult to calculate the curvatures, of this class of menisci. Some recent studies have shown that a relatively straightforward, but hitherto neglected, method originated by Mayer & Stowe (1965) and Princen (1969a) can be applied to analyse wedging menisci. However, the method has lacked a comprehensive experimental verification. This investigation follows on from the previously limited studies. A standardised method for the application of the analysis is described, the results from which are compared to observations made using modified experimental procedures. The behaviour of the capillary surfaces formed in several model pores are analysed with the method. The model systems studied are rectangular ducts, the pores formed by a rod in an angled corner, by two contacting rods and a plate and the space between a rod and a plate. For the latter two shapes the analysis is extended to include systems of mixed wettability which have a particular bearing on enhanced oil recovery operations. Experiments in which curvatures are inferred from observations of capillary rise, are performed using two comparative techniques. An involved procedure confurns predictions of meniscus curvature to within 0.3%. Use of a more straightforward, though less accurate, technique enables variations of curvature with tube shape or contact angle(s) to be conveniently studied. Results obtained are excellent and confmn the theory within the determined experimental errors. In addition the analysis has been extended to predict more complex meniscus behaviour. The tubular space formed by three rods and a plate gives rise to a whole family of meniscus shapes. With certain geometries a capillary surface regards the tube as a pore doublet where the behaviour in one neighbouring pore depends on that in the other. The capillary properties of this model system shed light on the behaviour of adjacent pores in a porous medium undergoing drainage (ordesorption). Experiments show excellent agreement with predictions of meniscus shapes, curvatures and, most interestingly, points of spontaneous transition from one meniscus shape to another. The system also has a potential future application because one panicular arrangement of rods produces a meniscus with a curvature virtually independent of the geometry. This makes it suitable for producing a standard meniscus of known curvature.

Abstract:
The presented master’s thesis deals with description of short fatigue cracks and can be divided to the several parts. In the first part, theoretical background of fatigue of materials and fracture mechanics parameters which can describe fatigue cracks is presented. Following part describes how to determine fracture mechanics parameters by finite elements method. Due to the shape of propagated fatigue crack, numerical model was established as a three-dimensional. Results obtained based on this model, was compared with literature with very good agreement. Than real shape of propagated short crack was used for description of the experimental data. It was shown, that plastic part of J-integral is suitable parameter for description of the short cracks.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to describe behavior of cracks in layered polymer materials. Quasi-brittle fracture (through the initiation and subsequent crack propagation mechanism) under low stresses is the most common mode of failure of polymer materials. In this case plastic deformations are localized in the vinicity of the crack tip and linear elastic fracture mechanics description of the crack behavior can be used. The knowledge of fracture parameters change during the crack propagation in multilayer body is a key point for establishing of the maximum load and consequently for the assessment of the residua lifetime. In contrast to homogeneous bodies the estimation of stress intensity factors for multilayer (composite) structure is numerically more elaborated and the fracture mechanics approach is complicated by the existence of interfaces between single layers, where material parameters are changed by a step. Special attention is paid to the configuration of a crack growing close to the material interface and along the interface. For the crack with tip on the material interface the effective values of stress intensity factor based on the crack stability criteria are estimated. It is shown that under special conditions (depending mainly on the elastic mismatch of materials) the existence of material interface has positive influence on the lifetime of the multilayered structure.

Abstract:
In recent years, emotions have become a popular lens for historical analysis. Building on existing scholarship, this thesis explores the emotions of Pope Gregory VII, an eleventh-century pope notable for his reform efforts and role in the Investiture Controversy. Focusing on Gregory’s papal letters, this study will analyse the displays of three key emotions: anger, love, and sorrow, to determine how and why Gregory used these displays to achieve his political and religious objectives. Gregory wielded emotional rhetoric in his papal letters to solidify his papal authority, construct and maintain key relationships, and garner support for his reform agenda.

Zorich, Jonathan P. "Alexander VI: Renaissance Pope." PDXScholar, 1996. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/5213.

Abstract:
The life of Pope Alexander VI has been the object of controversy for centuries. He has often been portrayed in terms of moral extremes. Those historians who have been critical of his methods and motives have depicted the Borgia pope as evil incarnate. For them, Alexander VI was the ultimate symbol of papal corruption. Those historians sympathetic with the church have claimed that Alexander was a slandered and misunderstood figure. In reality, Alexander VI could most accurately be described as temporal prince so typical of the Renaissance. In many respects, he was no better or worse than any other pontiff of his age. Of all the so-called secular popes, Alexander VI has been singled out as a figure of exceptional immorality and corruptibility. Unlike some orthodox Roman catholic authors determined to completely whitewash the pontificate Alexander VI and the Renaissance papacy, my aim is to engage in an impartial critique of the existing evidence. We will see that Alexander VI was a typical pope of the Renaissance, obsessed with temporal concerns, sometimes at the expense of his duties as head of the Roman catholic Church. He was also a man completely devoted to the advancement of his family, making sure that every member of the House of Borgia was achieved the highest level of power and influence. In spite of the justified charges of nepotism, many historians have repeated many of the false tales regarding Alexander's personal character. These will be shown to based on little more than unsubstantiated rumor and innuendo.
