Abstract:
Despite is global popularity in recent decades, the Divine Mercy devotion has received scant scrutiny from scholars. This article examines its historical development and evolving appeal, with an eye toward how this nuances our understanding of Catholic devotions in the “age of Vatican II.” The Divine Mercy first gained popularity during World War II and the early Cold War, an anxious era in which many Catholic devotions flourished. The Holy Office prohibited the active promotion of the Divine Mercy devotion in 1958, owing to a number of theological concerns. While often linked with the decline of Catholic devotional life generally, the Second Vatican Council helped set the stage for the eventual rehabilitation of the Divine Mercy devotion. The 1958 prohibition was finally lifted in 1978, and the Divine Mercy devotion has since gained a massive following around the world, benefiting in particular from the enthusiastic endorsement of Pope John Paul II. The testimonies of devotees reveal how the devotion’s appeal has changed over time. Originally understood as a method for escaping the torments of hell or purgatory, the devotion developed into a miraculous means to preserve life and, more recently, a therapeutic tool for various forms of malaise.

Abstract:
Although Manuals Offering detailed instructions in private prayer are both a distinctive and highly popular form of post-Reformation English literature, relatively little critical attention has been paid to these texts, either by literary critics or historians of religion. Surveys of English devotional literature, such as Helen White's Tudor Books of Private Devotion and English Devotional Literature 1600-1640 and C.J. Stranks's Anglican Devotion, describe the more prominent of these prayer manuals, but no critical study of this large body of literature yet exists. The reasons for this critical neglect are several. As Sam D. Gill's essay on prayer in the recently published Encyclopedia of Religion suggests, the study of prayer itself is still “undeveloped and naive” (2.489).

Abstract:
Devotion to Mary is one of the most popular religious practices among Catholics, and can be considered one of the oldest forms of popular religiosity. Marian devotions emerged spontaneously as a mixture of elements from local cultures and the Christian faith. However, such practices can become problematic when they overstress certain aspects of human experience together with the role of Mary. This article discusses a text of "The Way of the Cross" which was composed in a dialect of the Lamaholot language as used on the isle of Solor, East Flores. Abstract:
Popular Marian devotion played a vital role in the Catholic Church of Germany during the early modern period, especially during the “golden age of religious revival” experienced by post-Tridentine, baroque popular Catholicism. For example, at least ninety-seven local Marian shrines scattered throughout the diocese of Augsburg attracted pilgrims in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The most famous was certainly Andechs, which drew half a million visitors each year in the seventeenth century from all over the Holy Roman Empire. In turn, Catholics from the diocese of Augsburg traveled beyond the bishopric's borders to major and minor shrines near and far, such as Altötting in Bavaria. Yet while major sites dedicated to the Virgin Mary such as Andechs and Altötting reflected theintensityof ongoing popular Marian devotions, thebreadthof the Virgin Mary's cultural significance is signaled by the large number of Marian shrines within the diocese itself, such as Kobel or Violau, which were mostly small, local affairs that attracted primarily nearby populations as pilgrims and supplicants.

Youn, Heena. "Objects of popular devotion : Longquan ceramic religious figures during the Song-Yuan-Ming period." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2015. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/20355/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates ceramic figures portraying religious images made at the kilns of Longquan in Zhejiang province, China between the Song and the Ming periods. Through a thorough examination of the images' iconography alongside further related sources drawn from diverse areas of study, the thesis offers a new understanding of the cultural and religious importance of the figures and examines how they became prevalent in Longquan and how they were used and valued within and beyond the Chinese mainland. The range of figures examined, including Buddhas, bodhisattvas, deified monks, Daoist deities, immortals and popular gods, allows an exploration of religious beliefs and practices in Zhejiang at that time and demonstrates in particular the significance of the medium of ceramic in the development of popular devotion and its visual imagery in late imperial China. Small ceramic religious figures have so far gone unnoticed, in both the fields of Chinese ceramics and Chinese religious sculpture. Notwithstanding, they are an important part of the long, rich history of Chinese ceramic sculpture. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this exploration of Longquan figures demonstrates that small ceramic religious figures are illustrative of the rich visual and material culture of Chinese religion and provides a glimpse into the spiritual lives and religious customs of the Chinese in the pre-modern period.

This work aims at investigating the devotional trajectory of rubber tappers from the Acre River Valley, who managed to re-signify in the course of many decades the popular devotion brought from the Brazilian northeastern region, producing new meanings for their lives through faith. It seeks to show the importance of faith and devotion of hundreds of devotees who inhabit the forests and towns in the Acre River Valley. It also intends to present the various manners those rubber tappers have found to overcome daily difficulties, such as diseases, dangers in the forest, attacks by poisonous animals, and falls from trees or bridges. This research, though grounded in popular religiousness, shows the fragility or the mere state of abandonment of the in-forest inhabitants, and it thus justifies the search to understand the reasons that lead them to turn to faith and popular devotion in order to find ways to overcome daily difficulties and the absence of government assistance. It entertains the hypothesis that those devotees find meaning and reason to life through their faith in Santa Raimunda (Saint Raimunda), and in the protection She offers. Interviews and direct contacts with them during pilgrimages in the varadouros (small roads in rubber plantations), beads, and homage at Santa Raimunda´s tomb gave us the opportunity to gather rich and important data. The results show that the devotion to Santa Raimunda do Bom Sucesso (Saint Raimunda of Good Success) kept and still keeps the devotees men and women ready for their daily struggles, giving meaning to their lives and renewing their hopes. Devotion provided them strength to live in the rubber plantations as long as possible, and continues to support their lives in the periphery of the capital city of Rio Branco

Abstract:
This abstract aims at describing the structure of the pilgrimages taking place to the sanctuary of São Severino do Ramos situated in the city of Paudalho in the diocese of Nazaré in Pernambuco, Brazil, and trying to understand their characteristics. It parts from the four districts that compose the diocese and accentuates the reasons and strategies used by the transportation contractors who perform these constant pilgrimages to the Santuário do Engenho Ramos. Pilgrimage being a universally known religious practice, the Santuário de São Severino answers to the necessity the pilgrims feel to go to certain hierophanic places in order to deepen their experience of the Holy. In the Northeast of Brazil, this sanctuary has considerable importance because of the thousands of devotees who visit it (yearly) and identify it as a place capable of conceding the blessings most necessary to human life through the mediation of São Severino. To reach the aim we have set ourselves, there were realized twenty semi-structured interviews with the transportation coordinators of the pilgrimage five in each of the four sectors of the diocese of Nazaré. To get more information about the phenomena of the pilgrimages in the vicinity of the old Engenho Ramos, we also interviewed another nineteen people who know facts about the relationship between the pilgrimages and the sanctuary of São Severino. From a theoretical point of view, this research sought dialogue with the contributions of Carlos Alberto Steil, Annette Dumoulin, Mircea Eliade and Aldo Natale Terrin, among others. This essay is divided into three chapters: the first one introduces the genesis of the sanctuary in question; the second brings out the result of the interviews realized in the four sectors of the diocese; and the third analyses some of the characteristics that are common to pilgrimages. The essay aims at being not only a contribution in the field of Religious Sciences, but also a compass that wants to give direction to the pastoral initiatives of the diocese of Nazaré where popular religiosity is concerned.

I killed the saint: popular devotions and multimediations This research investigates the relationships, dialogues and porosities between non-canonical devotions in Brazil and Argentina and the discourses that permeate them: from a guadalupean model of christianization in the continent to mediatic propositions. In the corpus of the research five cases of popular devotion in both countries have been examined: Menina sem Nome (Nameless girl), Tânia Maria and Aída Curi, in Brazil, and Gilda and Difunta Correa (Diseased Correa), in Argentina. These cases have been analyzed under the perspective of cultural mestizaje, of baroque mechanisms of culture in Latin America, as well as that of border culture. Narratives in printed communication media have been examined under the hypothesis that fabulation and veneration are constantly created, recreated, and updated by each other, since these media occupy the role of traditional Catholic hagiography. This circularity is analyzed by Jesús Martin-Barbero as popular acts by which elements of culture are resignified. Being Latin America the locus of mestizaje and hybridization, investigating this non canonic sacred also means to understand the fictionalizing processes of life and mythologizing of everyday life elements. These devotional practices suggest a recreation of social reality, with exchange and reallocation of powers in a spectacular, fantastic, even fabled way inventing a lively and plurisignifying text. The role of such printed media seems to be preponderant as an itinerary for such elaborations, but it is from hence that the theme of this study arises: which are the translations elaborated so that printed news become sacred practices?

The objective of this study was to understand the genre of relations, through maternity, that they had been being structuralized, in elapsing of the tradition of the Jewish-Christian culture, inside of the official and popular Catholicism. We adopt, as component of analysis, the devotion of our lady of help Perpetual, gift in the prayers carried through in the Mother church of Campinas, in Goiânia. This religiosity is presented in so dynamic way that, weekly, fifteen prayers are celebrated, always on Tuesday. Hourly, the rotation of fiduciary offices and teams of liturgy happens, for the celebration of a new ritual, always followed for thousand of people. This research made possible an understanding of that the fiduciary offices that adhere to this genre of rite do it for cultivating in itself a great load of real fear and imaginary privations, in its existence human being. The relation established in this devotion occurs due the fact to see in Mary the face of mother of the perennial aid, in its shortage. For this reason, we choose the way of the analysis of the genre of relations, a time that the fiduciary offices resemble the faith in the maternity of Mary, to the ideal mother of human being. Men and women assure, without questionings, that the maternity must be a service of devotement the God and in this social construct idealized by the andocentric tradition, the women are inflicted to the submission and the social exploration. To reach, four pillars had supplied the basement of theoretical sustentation: maternity, genre, religion and devotion catholic to the mother of the help Perpetul. Authors as Durkheim, Bourdieu, Berger, Parker, Scoth, Daluran, Gebara, amongst others, they had been of essential relevance for the perception of the raised conjecture.

Abstract:
The research aimed to analyze the relationship between the devotee and the holy Shrine of St. Severino Ramos in Paudalho-PE, seeking to identify the symbolic exchanges in manifestations of popular devotions. The foundation was built from the works of Pierre Bourdieu, Alberto Beckhauser, João de Deus Gois, Eduardo Hoornaert, Faustino Menezes and Renata Teixeira, Sylvana Brandão, among others. From the methodological point of view, it is considered that the path followed was a phenomenological approach using specialized bibliography of popular religiosity in studies to understand the concepts related to the topic, between devotion to the saints, shrines, religion and popular religion, Catholicism and sanctoral religious tourism. A descriptive exploratory survey was used to investigate the relationship of symbolic exchanges on promises, miracles and votive among devotees of San Severino Ramos, at the Shrine of St. Severino Ramos in Paudalho-PE, in the light of the notion that all search for the sacred has as starting point urgent human needs, as well as gratitude for such needs have been met. The work consists of three chapters with the first contextualizes them on devotion to the saints throughout history, addressing questions about the origin; devotion to the saints in Brazil; devotion to St. Severino Ramos and sanctuary that bears his name in Paudalho-PE. The second chapter covers the concepts related to the theme of religion and interfaces with the popular religion, popular religion and Catholicism sanctoral; popular religiosity and religious tourism. The third focuses on the religious manifestations and symbolic exchanges at the Shrine of St. Severino Ramos bringing the search results. From the analysis, we sought to understand the religious phenomenon that occurs in that area to subsequently submit final comments and proposals on the issue to thereby contribute to the study of the religiosity of the northeastern people and therefore collaborate to produce a knowledge of interdisciplinary nature of the field itself as epistemological Sciences of Religion.

Abstract:
AbstractBreath and breathlessness are flashpoints in medieval literary texts. Medieval medical theories, rooted in classical thought, emphasise the bodily spirits and in particular, the ways that motions of the ‘vital spirit’—closely connected with breath—cause powerful physical responses that write emotions on the body in sighs, swoons, and even death. Physiological theory was complemented by theological notions of pneuma, the Spirit of divinity and life. The movement of breath plays a key role in depictions of emotion from love to grief, and in visionary or mystical experience. This essay explores breath and breathlessness in a range of English secular and devotional literary texts: popular romance writing, the medically alert fictions of Chaucer, and visionary works including the Revelations of Divine Love of Julian of Norwich and the spiritual autobiography of Margery Kempe. In all these works, concepts of the vital spirits and the role of breath in emotion are central. The play of breath underpins and shapes depictions of romantic love, explorations of the boundary between life and death, and ideas of spiritual revelation, creating narratives of profoundly embodied, affective experience.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the circulation of characteristically religious patterns and processes through popular culture. Although religious themes might appear in cultural media, popular culture also generates formations that seem to operate like religion. This chapter highlights three ways in which popular culture acts like religion in the formation of communities of sacred allegiance, the devotion to sacred objects, and the rituals of collective effervescence in sacred exchange. Illustrations are drawn from professional sports, consumer products, and entertainment media. As a business enterprise and cultural formation that displays all three of these features, Tupperware can be analyzed as a popular cultural religion, a religion of plastic that demonstrates the plasticity of religion in the modern world.

Abstract:
The story of Bodhisattva Guanyin with a Fish Basket (or Fishmonger Guanyin) already has attracted attention of scholars of Chinese literature and popular beliefs, as it represents an indigenous modification of the Indian Buddhist deity; but until now scholars in different countries mainly have studied textual variants of this story dating back to the late 19th — early 20th centuries. At the same time, precious scroll devoted to the story of Guanyin with a Fish Basket is still recited by local performers in the city of Changshu and its vicinity now. The analysis of the Precious Scroll of Guanyin with a Fish Basket in the context of recitation practice of “telling scriptures” in Changshu allows demonstrating the special features of functioning of a Chinese Buddhist narrative in the folk ritual practice. In this variant of a precious scroll, the story of Bodhisattva Guanyin converting the inhabitants of a fishermen village is combined with the veneration of local tutelary deities, placed on the “family altars”; thus representing the secularized form of Chinese Buddhist devotion.
