Abstract:
This thesis investigates quantum physics narratives for non-physicists, covering four interlocking modes of writing for adults and children, fictional and nonfictional, from 1900 to the present. It brings together three separate scholarly fields: literature and science, science fiction, and science communication. The thesis has revealed parallels between the approaches to quantum physics in these disparate narratives that have not been addressed before, shedding new light on the mutual influences between science and narrative form. The thesis argues that similar narrative tropes have been employed in popular science writing and in fiction across all age groups, changing non-physicists' ideas of quantum physics. This understanding differs significantly from the professional understanding of quantum physics, as I establish by means of a series of case studies, including popular science books for adults by Alastair I.M. Rae, George Gamow and Robert Gilmore; popularizations for children by Lucy and Stephen Hawking, Russell Stannard, and Otto Fong; children's fiction by Philip Pullman and Madeleine L'Engle; and fiction for adults by Greg Egan, David Walton, Blake Crouch, and Iain Pears. An analysis of authors who wrote for various audiences or in multiple genres, such as Fred Hoyle, Stephen Hawking, and Ian Stewart, shows how the same concerns and conflicts surface in a wide range of stories. Quantum physics is not yet fully understood; the Copenhagen, conscious collapse, many-worlds and other interpretations compete for both scientific and public acceptance. Influential physics communicators such as John Gribbin and Brian Cox have written popularizations in which they express a personal preference for one interpretation, arguing against others. Scientific conflict, which tends to be omitted from university teaching, is thus explicitly present in popularizations, making it clear to the reader that quantum physics is in a constant state of flux. I investigate the conflicts between Fred Hoyle and George Gamow, and Stephen Hawking and Leonard Susskind, to see how they undermine the alleged objectivity of science. The interplay between the different stories of quantum physics shows how the science not only shapes the stories: the stories shape the science, too.

Abstract:
The first four decades of the twentieth century was a period of rapid development in physics. The late nineteenth century discoveries of X-rays, Becquerel rays and subatomic particles had revealed new properties of matter, and the early twentieth century quantum and relativity theories added to the notion that the discipline was undergoing a fundamental change in thought and practice. Historians and scientists alike have retrospectively conceived of a sharp divide between nineteenth century and twentieth century physics, applying the terms ‘classical’ and ‘modern’ to distinguish between these two practices. However, recent scholarship has suggested that early twentieth century physicists did not see this divide as self-evident, and in fact were responsible for consciously constructing these categories and definitions. This thesis explores the creation of the terms ‘classical’ and ‘modern’ physics in Britain, and the physicists responsible. I consider how these terms were employed in ‘public’ arenas (lectures, books, newspapers, museums) influencing the wider reception of ‘modern’ physics. I consider not only the rhetorics employed by ‘modern’ physicists, but also those we would now consider to be ‘classical’, revealing a diverse range of potential definitions of ‘modern’ physics. Furthermore, even within the ‘modernists’ themselves, there was considerable disagreement over how their work was to be presented, as industrially applicable, or of value simply as intellectual knowledge in and of itself. There were also different notions of how scientific ‘progress’ should be portrayed, whether knowledge advanced through experimental refinement or theoretical work. Early twentieth century ‘modern’ physics appeared to discard long held theories, rejecting much of the discipline’s past. As such, physicists’ connection to the legacy of Newton was under threat. Furthermore, the instability of science more generally was revealed: if physicists had shown the old theories to be wrong, then why should the new ones be any different? This had severe implications as to how the public placed ‘trust’ in science. I explore how physicists carefully managed the ‘public’ transition from ‘classical’ to ‘modern’ physics, regaining public trust during a period of scientific ‘revolution’ and controversy.

Andreanov, Alexei. "Transition vitreuse et dynamique lente." Phd thesis, Ecole Polytechnique X, 2007. http://pastel.archives-ouvertes.fr/pastel-00004553.

Full text
Abstract:

Gillespie, Ian Trent. "Social Supers: A Content Analysis of Non-Physical Aggressions in Popular Superhero Movies." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6127.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years superhero movies have skyrocketed in popularity, bringing with them plots and characters that tend to exhibit high levels of aggression. As social learners, humans often learn from what they observe, and especially emulate characters they admire – including fictional superheroes and villains. Consequently, this study content analyzed non-physical aggressions (verbal aggression, relational aggression, and violent ideation) in the top 25 highest grossing superhero movies between 2005 and 2015. Results found an average of 171.8 acts of non-physical aggression per movie. Females in these movies were also significantly more likely to engage in verbal and relational aggressions, which contributes to gender stereotypes about aggression. Unfortunately, due to a failure in intercoder reliability testing, these results are unreliable.

Abstract:
Ecotourism is a common conservation and development strategy in the Maya, Forest region. New sites of ecotourism consumption, such as El Rematé near Tikal National Park in Guatemala, are developing in response to consumer demand for budget accommodations in this attractive cultural and natural setting. This study analyzes new ecotourism infrastructure developments in El Rematé for signs that this tourism draws on ecological imagery as expressed in popular media - or popular ecology - not on the natural and cultural ecology of the region that is the target of international conservation efforts. Analysis suggests that ecotourism entrepreneurs who effectively associate their product with texts of popular ecology will out-compete the community ecotourism projects supported by the non-governmental organizations managing the Biosphere Reserves in the region, challenging the success of international conservation and development strategies.

Lively, Beth. "Mediated depictions of child physical abuse : a narrative analysis." Virtual Press, 1993. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/864925.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, the media have publicized the social problem of physical child abuse. This study examined three artifacts of physical abuse: the children's book Robin's Story, the popular song "Luka," and the television documentary Scared Silent: Exposing and Ending Child Abuse. Chapter One described each artifact and provided a literature review which detailed the writings about physical child abuse and artifacts discussing this topic. The chapter then posed research questions about how the artifacts viewed abused children and their abusers, the causes of abuse, and the solutions proposed for ending physical abuse.Chapter One finally discussed the narrative framework of rhetorical analysis used to examine the three artifacts. The narrative method used in this analysis employed three steps: 1) An examination of narrative structure, which discussed the plot of the story, the crucial points of the story and the events which supplemented those points, and the steps of breach, crisis, redress, and reintegration in the narrative; 2) An examination of narrative rationality, which talked about the completeness and true to life quality of the story and evaluated the reasons the rhetors gave for following the course of action endorsed by the story; and 3) An examination of narrative standards, including truth standard or how the narrative compares with what the audience believes is true; aesthetic standard or the grammar, setting, and characterization within the story, and ethical standard or the values expressed within the narrative. Chapter Two applied this framework to the children's book Robin's Story. Chapter Three viewed the popular song "Luka" through the narrative framework. Chapter Four discussed the documentary Scared Silent in terms of narrative analysis.Chapter Five then discussed the conclusions of the analysis for each artifact, artifacts discussing physical abuse, and for rhetoric. Some of the conclusions reached were that artifacts discussing physical child abuse should attempt to make their stories universal, that such artifacts need to distinguish between abuse and physical punishment, and that artifacts dealing with this problem must provide concrete courses of action to end physical abuse. This analysis concluded that, while narrative analysis provided the answers to the research questions, this framework needs to be made into a concrete method of rhetorical analysis to ensure that narratives are effectively evaluated. Narrative analysis was positive in this analysis, however, in that it supported the definitions of rhetoric as value, epistemology, motive, drama, meaning, and argument. This analysis found that, to end the problem of physical child abuse, rhetors must work with experts in this field and tailor artifacts from different perspectives to various audiences using different forms of media.<br>Department of Speech Communication

Full text
Abstract:
This work will address the organization of knowledge in Physical Education classes in two schools in the context of political-pedagogical proposal “Escola Cidadã” of the Municipal Teaching Network of Porto Alegre. The Municipal Network of Porto Alegre Teaching has undergone several transformations over the past twenty-five years since the proposal of education for forming cycles, through construction processes of curriculum frameworks and epistemological changes at each change of management in the Secretariat Municipal Education. However, the proposal of the “Escola Cidadã”, implemented in 1992 and which is guided in the framework of popular education, is still remaining as an official of this school system and, contradictorily to these precepts, the Secretariat Municipal Education is characterized by an efficient management results, based on managerial concepts. Some of the phenomena that cross the teaching work are the result of these contradictions, as the proletarianization and the intensification of teachers‟ work, the loss of autonomy, rationalization and the division of design and implementation of education plans. Still we must consider the different conceptions and pedagogical theories that influenced the teaching of Physical Education, allowing different ways of organizing knowledge in class. Thus, some concerns have arisen in and resulted in this research problem: What knowledge are treated and how they are organized in Physical Education classes in two schools of the Municipal Teaching Network of Porto Alegre? To assist in this process, we make the following specific objectives: Identify what knowledge included in the physical education classes; Understanding how these skills are organized by Physical Education teachers in their planning and in their teaching; Understanding how students organize knowledge treated in Physical Education; Analyze how the treaty knowledge in Physical Education classes articulates with the Project “Escola Cidadã” and the transformation of the Municipal Teaching Network of Porto Alegre. Guided by this research question, methodological option was the qualitative and ethnographic study because it encompasses a set of assumptions and procedures that you care to describe, explain, interpret and understand the representations and meanings that a specific group attributes to their daily actions and experiences. The choice of ethnography is to understand that the school environment and those in it are inserted build values, beliefs, perspectives and own motivations that context and such theoretical and methodological perspective allows us to understand social phenomena and contradictions that pervade the organization of knowledge in the classroom Physical Education. The context of the research were two schools of the Municipal Teaching Network of Porto Alegre. The instruments for obtaining information used in the research were the participant observation, semi-structured interviews with teachers and students, field diaries and document analysis. Information obtained underwent a thorough reading and rereading process, assigning them units of meaning, later grouped into three broad categories of analysis were the discussion of chapters of this dissertation: Conceptions and route of teachers; The school organization and the Municipal Teaching Network of Porto Alegre; the relationship of students with the knowledge. It was possible to understand through these three different elements aspects that are linked to the organization of knowledge in Physical Education classes. Among these aspects, the training of teachers, their experiences, the paths of each of them within the network contributed to the construction of practice and design of Physical Education in each of the teachers. It was also possible to understand the physical and organizational structure of the school as influential aspects in the organization of knowledge, and with the transformations of the Municipal Teaching Network of Porto Alegre and frequent alternations in educational policies promoted by different administrations of the sponsor. Also analyzed aspects related to the students, and the way that your prospects, your desires and tensions contribute to the organization of knowledge. When considering these aspects, all present at the same time and interrelating within the same context, it was possible to contribute to the understanding of the complexity of the contradictions present in the organization of knowledge in a unique way these two schools of the Municipal Teaching Network of Porto Alegre.

This network has an outstanding importance in the life of those from popular classes, in an even enhanced way when it refers to people with great limitations, as it is the case of many people with physical disability. In this context, the social network becomes fundamental as to lessen the difficulties that these people face as regards the set of limitations inflicted by the disability, and the socio-economical context in which they take part, urging as well the need for the professionals who act in the basic care services make use of these networks support. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the personal social networks value in Popular Education in Health practice, encouraging the interaction between the professionals and the social networks, as concerns the production of more intense health actions for the physical disabled people, who belong to popular classes. Hence, an action-research with two phases was developed: in the first one, a mapping of the social networks of disabled people was done by means of semi-structured interviews, as well as the making up of the disabled people s history; in the second phase, the social networks activation/mobilization through meetings and personal contacts was accomplished. Apart from the interviews, the data were collected by records in a research diary. The data analysis was based on thematic units which were organized in categories. Thus, results showed the existing difference between the social networks of the people who belong to the same social class and cope with the same problems, as well as the erosion which occurs in the social network of the disabled ones who live alongside the urban areas, imposing them diverse degrees of isolation and making the rehabilitation process difficult. The isolation between the researched people may be attributed to several factors, and the social network mobilization presents itself as an important possibility to overcome this condition and to collaborate with these subjects´ organizations, rescuing their self-esteem and providing autonomy. The practices of Popular Education in Health are a very fertile ground for the work with the social networks. For this reason, the social network notion can contribute to widen the actions of Popular Education in Health, pointing out intervention ways which enable a major practical and theoretical visibility of the social networks in these actions, so that the basic care services can be more dynamic.<br>A rede social pessoal é constituída por pessoas que convivem com o sujeito em sua realidade cotidiana e que são acessíveis ao contato.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the circulation of physical music media (78rpm records, LPs, CDs, tape) in the independent music marketplace. It is based on six months of ethnographic fieldwork in Austin, Texas, amongst the producers of goods for the independent marketplace, independent music stores and consumers of these goods and services. Against prevailing constructivist interpretations, I will argue for the value of authenticity as an analytical anthropological concept because it unites what my research participants value about materiality, technology, and marketplace relationships. In the independent marketplace for physical music media, authenticity is a multi-local, multi-vocal phenomenon. A nexus of economic rationales, design, reproduction-technologies, histories and personal conduct interact in an ongoing process that authenticates music commodities and their marketplace. This means that particular commodities are sought out over others on account of the multi-local authenticities they anchor. The thesis firstly demonstrates how the independent music scene safeguards claims to authentic identities by constructing an opposition to the mainstream, drawing on discourses of ethical production and consumption, sound technologies, spaces of consumption and cultural production. Secondly, I will uncover how physical music media and sound-reproduction technologies are assessed as effective providers of authentic musical reproductions according to their historical contingencies and performative material capacities. Thirdly, I develop the notion of the scene (Shank 1994) from its previously genre-fixed perspective to encompass multiple musical styles operating within a common social network of producers, retailers and collectors. The pluralistic scene I describe utilises multiple musical genres and nuanced notions of materiality and authenticity to establish their complex hierarchy of sonic and technological experiences.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an attempt to define the constellation of circumstances and ideas, which has determined my strategy in the paintings and performances submitted for examination. Unlike many artists I do not accept the fact of postmodernity. On the contrary, art and life remain suspended between the future and the past, the essential modernist condition. I argue for this in the introduction and the first two chapters, through a description of the performance work of Joseph Beuys and on my reaction to it in a performance in which I attempted to examine the practical paradoxes of art making in late modernity. I take my position largely from the Frankfurt school and succeeding debates about their work up to Zizek. For, while we remain in modernity we cannot regard it simply as an unfinished project. It is no longer possible to adopt an avant-garde position in ones practice. The central section of the thesis contains a series of studies of the careers of major artists who have faced up to the paradoxes of modernity from Picasso to Richter and Parr. Through their successes, failures and sometimes duplicity, a practical profile emerges a guide to the limits of contemporary practice. The last chapter concerns my paintings as a response to this profile.

This work is part of the research named Educar/criar sem violência: prevenção da violência física familiar contra crianças, which dealt with families whose children participate, or participated at the time of the research, in Escola de Circo, in Goiânia (GO), one of the extension programs of the Instituto Dom Fernando (IDF) at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Goiás (PUC-Goiás). The present research is qualitative and all the process was based on the theoretical and methodological principles of Vigotski’s social-historical psychology, focusing on the historical and dialectical materialism perspective. Two families participated and members of three generations were interviewed: grandmother, mother, and child(ren). It is important to point out that one of the families participated with two children, totaling seven individuals. According to the core meanings of the participants, it was possible to apprehend the senses of intrafamilial physical violence against children attributed by each one of them. In a general perspective, physical violence against children was and continues being one of the main, if not the main, method used in the education of this three generations under study. Although it is a naturalized and banalized phenomenon for the interviewed grandmothers, mothers, and children, contradictorily, all these subjects expressed their suffering and/or affirmed their sorrow for having experienced such violence. In conclusion, each generation understands physical violence against children in a peculiar way: for the grandmothers, it is legitimated, although they reject the one that leaves physical marks in the body or the type they consider more severe; the mothers live a reflection about its use in their children’s education, although they find it difficult to interrupt the usage of this method of education; and finally, the children reported suffering when they are the victims, but it is difficult for them to imagine other models of education.<br>Neste estudo, buscou-se apreender os sentidos da violência física intrafamiliar contra crianças atribuídos por três gerações de famílias de classe popular.

This study examines the potential of Physical Education as a discipline that promotes the school inclusion of students coming from a lower class of the EMEF "Ricardo C.C.

Abstract:
Popular geography magazines like National Geographic (NG) provide readers with a lens of the world around them. Yet sadly they often only serve a limited utilitarian purpose as dust collectors on coffee tables of hospital waiting rooms or doctors’ practices. It should be of little surprise then that the relative importance of geographic magazines as a representational forum has been underestimated historically. The importance of geographic magazines as an outlet for creating and disseminating preconceived visions of what may be termed ‘popular geographies’ has only become the subject of scrutiny in the last two decades. Authors including Lutz and Collins (1993) and Rothenberg (1994, 2007) have reflected critically upon the place of NG as a powerful ideological institution for legitimating particular visions of the world in the wider corpus of the discipline of geography. Yet while there has been a substantial volume of work dedicated to unravelling the situated lens of NG there has been no research devoted to deciphering the lenses of other geography magazines such as Canadian Geographic (CG), Australian Geographic (AG) or New Zealand Geographic (NZG). These magazines also embody the ideals of adventure, discovery and nature made famous by NG but purvey geography through distinctively national narratives. Through discourse analysis the thesis examines these three magazines in order to unravel geographic imaginations of nationalism in CG, AG and NZG and in the process challenge divergent conceptions of geography itself as both an academic discipline and popular subject.

Abstract:
Albert Einstein published the English translation of Relativity: The Special and General Theory in the midst of two big events in 1920: the confirmation of the two theories of relativity and spacetime in 1919 and the Nobel prize in physics in 1921. The new global celebrity wanted to make the theories intelligible and readable for an international English-speaking audience, an audience that also included antagonistic scientists and even anti-Semites. The aim of this thesis is to do a rhetorical analysis of Einstein’s character, his ethos, in Relativity, with a specific focus on creation of credibility in regard to his historical context: scientific ideals, values and norms as well as the political and cultural tendencies in Europe during the early 20th century. This was done firstly by identifying the implied auditor. Secondly, based on the material, I have identified three stereotypes or characters – the professional idealist, the mentor and the internationalist –  which emphases different features and capacities that are crucial for the credibility of the text. Thirdly, by using these stereotypes and in regard to the specific historical context, I investigated how Einstein developed his primary ethos into a secondary ethos in the text. The rhetorical analysis of Einstein’s Relativity shows that his ethos stands in relation to the social and cultural perception of the virtuous epistemic scientist; to fight prejudices regarding being a Jewish-German theoretical physicist; and, noteworthy, a way to produce a well-needed international space – a crucial alternative to continue the positivistic knowledge production counter to the nationalistic project.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>商學研究所<br>105<br>Nowadays, social media are gaining vast amount of attention in the context of public relation management by both organizations and individuals. This phenomenon is evident with numerous successful examples in practice. One of them is the well-known Facebook Fan Page, using the word-of-mouth effect by celebrities or popular bloggers to affect consumers’ purchasing decision. While there are different factors that drive the effect, including source, message and receiver, most existing studies focus their analyses on only one of the three factors. In light of that, this research establishes an angle that takes all three of the factors under consideration. And in each factor, one variable is picked up for the analysis, including the physical attractiveness of the fashion bloggers, the content of post and the centrality of visual product aesthetics (CVPA) of consumer. Hopefully, this research could compensate for the missing part of existing literature, and are applicable to the development of marketing strategy in practice. This study is a 2 X 2 X 2 experimental design, using physical attractiveness of popular fashion blogger, the content of post and CVPA of consumer as independent variables; product attitude and purchase intension as dependent variables. The following results are found in the context of fashion apparel industry by this research: 1. Physical attractiveness of popular fashion blogger does not significantly affect the advertising effect. 2. Whether content of post is in narrative or evaluation style, does not significantly affect the advertising effect. 3. Consumers with higher CVPA receive greater advertising effect. 4. Better advertising effect is found in the combination of high bloggers’ physical attractiveness with narrative style posts; and moderate bloggers’ physical attractiveness with evaluation style posts. 5. The interaction between CVPA of consumer and the content of posts does not significantly affect the advertising effect. 6. Better advertising effect is found in the combination of high bloggers’ physical attractiveness with low CVPA consumers; and moderate bloggers’ physical attractiveness with high CVPA consumers.

Abstract:
Obesity is a major concern not only of the Czech Republic, but of all developed countries of the world. It is therefore a global pandemic, against which it is necessary to introduce effective measures. According to epidemiological studies, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe are among the states with the highest prevalence of obesity. In most European countries, the prevalence of obesity in women is higher than in men, by about 3-6%. But a big issue is childhood obesity, which predisposes individuals to obesity also in adulthood. This results in an increased risk of premature morbidity and mortality due to complications of obesity. In obese children the risk of musculoskeletal diseases and cardiovascular and respiratory systems is increased. Obesity often leads to disorders of sexual development, skin complications and changes in the psyche. According to the World Health Organization, there are about 43 million overweight or obese children in the world. The treatment of childhood obesity is not simple. It is necessary to establish a long-term strategic plan, based on the lifestyle change focused on nutrition and eating habits, physical activity and strengthening the self-confidence of the child. This diploma thesis was carried out by the quantitative research through the secondary data analysis. The research group consisted of children registered at the general practitioner for children and adolescents, Šárka Mičanová, M.D. The main goal of my thesis was to survey the prevalence of obesity and overweight in children at this selected pediatric office. Four hypotheses were stated for the research. Hypothesis No.1, children with a high BMI at the age of 5 years show the signs of obesity also at the age of 15-17-years, has not been confirmed. Hypothesis No.2, in childhood, obesity originating in alimentation prevails over obesity of endocrinological origin, has been confirmed. The hypothesis that obesity prevalence has increased in recent years has not been confirmed. The last hypothesis presuming that levels of biochemical markers in children with overweight and obesity do not differ from those of children with a normal weight has not been confirmed.

Title: Frequency of normal weight obese preschool children and its physical fitness - selected populations of children from 6 Prague kindergartens. Objectives: The goal of this thesis is to find out the occurence and physical fitness of preschool age children with normal weight obese and compare it with physical fitness of normal weight non-obese preschool children and children with overweight and obese. Methods: Observation is the main method used in this thesis (regarding to title). We analysed 289 preschool aged children and chose BMI index in the range of 25th to 80th percentil, according to Vignerova at al. (2006) along with values of each skinfold higher then 85th percentil according to Bláha et al. (1990), to identify normal weight obese children. Physical fitness was based on several tests: multistage 20 metre shuttle run, standing long jump, sit-ups, sit- and-reach, throw ball with alternative hands. To analyse all the facts and get results we used descriptive statistics, tests of normaltity and ANOVA. Results: We identified n = 12 normal weight obese children (4,15 %) from all participating children. Results of research showed us that normal weight obese children were worse than normal weight non-obese children by 5,80 %, respectively by 4,76 %. Children that were overweight and obese had...

Abstract:
In the case of time-consuming or arduous activity the individual bone, modifications of the individual skeleton may occur. Specific activities or movements are predominantly responsible for these modifications and are likely to be carried out for long periods from a young age of the individual. One of these modifications is considered to be some of the so- called non-metric traits on the postcranial skeleton. Special attention is being paid to changes of the articulation facets and changes in some muscular or ligaments' binding areas which are considered to be possibly related to excessive physical stress, occurring through the lifetime (squatting position). With respect to the frequency of 30 postcranial non-metric traits 293 skeletal remains in the Great Moravian population from the settlement agglomeration Mikulčice-Valy (9th - 10th century) have been compared. The primary goal of this research was to determine the frequency of non-metric traits and to verify the relationship with sex - age or the potential laterality differences in the case of bilateral traits. Then, based on the variability of non-metric traits, two different socio-economic groups were compared - the castle (burial site III. church) and the hinterland (burial sites Prušánky and Josefov). The highest incidence of traits was...

Abstract:
7 ABSTRACT The occurrence of enthesopathies is associated with muscle insertion sites and physical activities. The aim of this work is focused on two basic target areas. In the methodical section, I tested two methods of enthesopathy evaluation (Crubézy, 1988; Villotte, 2006) and I monitored the influence of age and physical stress on the incidence of enthesopathies in a documented skeletal collection from Greece. The main aim was then the evaluation of enthesopathies in the Great Moravian population from the settlement agglomeration Mikulčice-Valy (9th -10th century) using the selected method and the subsequent interpretation of the results attained, taking into consideration the archaeological facts relating to the given locality. Based on the observed degrees of concordance between the repeated evaluations, I used Villotte's method (2006) for final evaluation. I proved the correlation between the prevalence of enthesopathies and age in individuals from a recently documented skeletal collection. I was unable to demonstrate the influence of physical activity on the incidence of enthesopathies. This is apparently due to the small number of individuals with manual and non-manual occupations. In individuals from the Mikulčice settlement agglomeration, I recorded a demonstrable difference between individual...

Harvey, Michael Joseph. "Seeing the supplements : a rhetorical visual analysis with fitness advertisements." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/5901.

Full text
Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)<br>This study uses a rhetorical visual analysis to investigate supplement advertisements within the top three fitness magazines, according to circulation, to provide a richer understanding of the message construction within the visual images the advertisements contain. The advertisements were selected at random over a time span of a year and a half within each of the magazines, totaling nine separate advertisements for analysis. The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent, if any, the construction of advertisements in men's fitness magazines operates as ideographic images establishing legitimacy as determined through application of Sonja Foss' rhetorical visual analysis methodology. Previous research has identified various analyses of visual images within the fitness culture, however, rhetorical visual analysis of supplement advertisement does not appear to have been investigated prior to this project which is the primary concern for the initiation of the current research. Employing rhetorical analysis in order to understand visual images provides a perspective that is imperative to identification of elements and functions of visual images. The current findings indicate that images in advertisements in men's fitness magazines do not establish rhetorical legitimacy, as understood from a rhetorical perspective. However, when examined through a traditional aesthetic intentionalist perspective, the construction of the advertisements operates as ideographic images, establishing legitimacy through the image. This information provides us with the understanding that advertisements within current muscle magazines are operating under a traditional viewpoint, and as such, produce traditional perspectives. The advertisement industry within this genre is reliant upon the consumer first knowing what the product is and then realizing how the image fits into that function. The limitation within this perspective of the advertisement industry is the consumer's knowledge base concerning the product, the product being explained through text and the time the consumer is willing to spend on correlating the intent or function with the images presented.
