Abstract:
Most theoretical treatments of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements of porous media assume ideal pore geometries for the pores (i.e. slabs, spheres or cylinders) with welldefined surface-to-volume ratios (S/V). This same assumption is commonly adopted for naturally occurring materials, where the pore geometry can differ substantially from these ideal shapes. In this paper the effect of the roughness of the pore surface on the T2 relaxation spectrum is studied. By homogenization of the problem using an electrostatic approach it is found that the effective surface relaxivity can increase dramatically in the presence of rough surfaces. This leads to a situation where the system responds as a pore with a smooth surface, but with significantly increased surface relaxivity. As a result the standard approach of assuming an idealized geometry with known surface to-volume and inverting the T2 relaxation spectrum to a pore size distribution is no longer valid. The effective relaxivity is found to be fairly insensitive to the shape of the roughness but strongly dependent on the width and depth of the surface geometry.

Abstract:
In the numerical simulation of fluid flow and solute transport in porous media, finite element method (FEM) has long been utilized and has been proven to be efficient. In this work, an alternative approach called random walk particle tracking (RWPT) method is proposed. In this method, a finite number of particles represent the distribution of a solute mass. Each particle carries a certain fraction of the total mass and moves in the porous media according to the velocity field. The proposed RWPT model is established on a scientific software platform OpenGeoSys (OGS), which is an open source initiative for numerical simulation of thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes in porous media. The flow equation is solved using finite element method in OGS. The obtained hydraulic heads are numerically differentiated to obtain the velocity field. The particle tracking method does not solve the transport equation directly but deals with it in a physically stochastic manner by using the velocity field. Parallel computing concept is included in the model implementation to promote computational efficiency. Several benchmarks are developed for the particle tracking method in OGS to simulate solute transport in porous media and pore space. The simulation results are compared to analytical solutions and other numerical methods to test the presented method. The particle tracking method can accommodate Darcy flow as it is the main consideration in groundwater flow. Furthermore, other flow processes such as Forchheimer flow or Richards flow can be combined with as well. Two applications indicate the capability of the method to handle theoretical real-world problems. This method can be applied as a tool to elicit and discern the detailed structure of evolving contaminant plumes

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate forced convection of air through open cell foams. It can be numerically investigated either by implementing the time efficient macroscopic models or computationally expensive microscopic models. However, during the course of this study, it was observed that the macroscopic models are not sufficient for determining the desired key parameters. Nevertheless, it is still possible that these macroscopic models can be used to design an application accurately with minimum time efforts if the concerned key parameters are already known through other means. Accordingly, in this work, a methodology is developed to determine the desired key parameters by implementing the microscopic models, which are further used into the macroscopic models for designing different applications. To validate the proposed methodology, a set of steady state and transient forced convection experiments were performed for a set of ceramic foams having different pore diameter (10−30 PPI) and porosity (0.79−0.87) for a superficial velocity in the range of 0.5−10 m/s.

Abstract:
Charged hydrogels are ionic polymer gels and belong to the class of smart materials. These gels are multiphasic materials which consist of a solid phase, a fluid phase and an ionic phase. Due to the presence of bound charges these materials are stimuli-responsive to electrical or chemical loads. The application of electrical or chemical stimuli as well as mechanical loads lead to a viscoelastic response. On the macroscopic scale, the response is governed by a local reversible release or absorption of water which, in turn, leads to a local decrease or increase of mass and a respective volume change. Furthermore, the chemo-electro-mechanical equilibrium of a hydrogel depends on the chemical composition of the gel and the surrounding solution bath. Due to the presence of bound charges in the hydrogel, this system can be understood as an osmotic cell where differences in the concentration of mobile ions in the gel and solution domain lead to an osmotic pressure difference. In the present work, a continuum-based numerical model is presented in order to describe the time-dependent swelling behavior of hydrogels. The numerical model is based on the Theory of Porous Media and captures the fluid-solid, fluid-ion and ion-ion interactions. As a direct consequence of the chemo-electro-mechanical equilibrium, the corresponding boundary conditions are defined following the equilibrium conditions. For the interaction of the hydrogel with surrounding mechanical structures, also respective jump condtions are formulated. Finaly, numerical results of the time-dependent behavior of a hydrogel-based chemo-sensor will be presented.

Abstract:
Ionic hydrogels belong to the class of polyelectrolyte gels or ionic gels. Their ability to swell or shrink under different environmental conditions such as change of pH, ion concentration or temperature make them promising materials, e.g. for microsensoric or microactuatoric devices. The hydrogel swelling exhibits nonlinear effects due to the occurrence of different interacting transport phenomena. Numerical simulations are an essential part in the ongoing development of microsensors and microactuators. In order to determine transport effects due to diffusion, migration and convection a multiphase mesoscale model based on the Theory of Porous Media is applied. The governing field equations are solved in the transient regime by applying the Finite Element Method. By means of the derived numerical framework a detailed investigation of the different transport phenomena is carried out. Numerical experiments are performed to characterize the dominating transfer phenomena for ionic gels under chemical stimulation.

Abstract:
Tuscany of the mid-seventeenth century was renowned for its luxury crafts and had one of the most vibrant scientific communities in Europe. The Medici family presided over a state whose political stability astonished contemporaries, in which wise rule and good fortune had spared their subjects the worst ravages associated with the Thirty Years' War. The city of Livorno was the Medici state’s greatest prize and the most innovative port in Italy. The introduction examines the development of Livorno and other free ports in three registers: as part of the Italian response to the rise of the Atlantic world; as implicated in the creation of a new kind of commodity market; and as a neglected problem in the history of economic thought. It suggests that free ports should be central to our interpretation of economic change in early modern Europe and the Mediterranean.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Pore network modeling is a relatively new approach for simulation of fluid flows in porous media of the fuel cells. The porous media is simulated with a network of pores connected to each other through throats. The radius of the pores and throats, the length of the throats and other geometric specifications of the network is extracted with respect to the tomography of the porous media under study. The flow of the fluid though the network is then studied using simplified Navier-Stokes equation (usually Darcy’s law). In this paper, a pore-network approach is adopted in order to study the motion of liquid water inside GDL of PEM fuel cells. The effect of wettability of the medium is examined on the movement of water droplets inside the GDL.

Abstract:
The use of porous-media burners in air-heating systems, gas turbine combustors, and steam generators is a potential method to reduce pollutant emission levels. Biofuels, such as canola methyl ester (CME), are an attractive alternate energy resource; however, pure biofuels have lower energy content than petroleum-based fuels. Therefore, the combustion characteristics of blends of Jet A and CME were studied in a porous-media burner. Two silicon carbide coated carbon-carbon matrix porous media of square section were used. The upstream porous medium with a pore size of 8 pores per centimeter (20 pores per inch) served as the evaporation porous medium; the downstream porous medium with a pore size of 31 ppcm (80 ppi) was used as the combustion porous medium. The CME-Jet A fuel blends were injected from an air-blast atomizer into a coflow of hot air, which entered the evaporation porous medium. The combustion characteristics of three blends (volume percentages of CME equal to 25%, 50% and 75%) were studied at four different initial equivalence ratios. The global pollutant emissions, axial temperature profiles and the radiative heat fraction of the flame downstream of the combustion porous medium were measured. The results indicated that for lean air-fuel mixtures, the addition of CME to Jet A resulted in a reduction of the CO emission index. However, the NOx emission index was increased with the CME content in the blend for a given equivalence ratio. Also, the maximum flame temperature increased with equivalence ratio. In general, it was found that the porous-media burner was useful in reducing emissions and controlling flame temperatures.

Abstract:
A pore-network model is adopted to simulate fluid flow in porous media. The model is examined for two different hydrophobic loadings. A new algorithm for displacing the fluid inside the porous medium is developed. The algorithm uses an effective pressure as a combination of capillary pressure and hydrodynamic pressure. The capillary pressure is a function of pore size distribution and the wettability characteristics of the medium while the hydrodynamic pressure is correlated to the local saturation of the pores. Thus, the algorithm automatically switches between the capillary driven and the viscous displacement mechanisms based on the value of the local capillary number. The results are compared with the available experimental and numerical data.

Abstract:
In the processing industries several membrane technologies are used to separate and concentrate various fluid stream where the concentrate or/filtrate has high value products. Nevertheless, pore blocking is one of the major factors determining the applicability, efficiency and performance of the membrane filtration and separation system. Inside and outside membrane pore blockage leads to concentration polarization and cake buildup that reduces the flux rate and increases losses in system efficiency. Several experimental and theoretical works exist that describe the pore flow and blocking process. However, a limited amount of published work integrates the pore blocking with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The change in the fluid stream and membrane characteristics during the process are the major challenges in CFD modeling. This paper presents the initial simulations of two-dimensional CFD models that directly model the actual micro pore flow and the porous medium flow (Darcy flow). Various pressure and pore sizes (porosity and permeability) were simulated. For the first model, pore flow model, simplified two-dimensional micro pores were modeled and the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations were solved in all regions including pores. Appling various inlet pressures, the velocity and pressure in all fluid regions are simulated. In second model, the membrane region is modeled as porous medium and the flow field is simulated by using porous medium characteristics. The porous medium characteristics, porosity and permeability, were estimated from pore flow average outlet velocity. The result indicates that both models with equivalent values can be used to predict the overall flow fields. However, both models have to overcome challenges to be widely used. With the direct pore flow (pores flow) simulation, mesh generation becomes a challenge since the membrane pores are very small as compared to the inlet and outlet regions. The pore flow simulation results indicate that CFD can be used to understand the membrane flow characteristics and fluid mechanics. It also can be used to design and / or select a membrane system. For the simulation of membrane as porous medium, the detail of flow through the porous medium including the inlet and outlet effects becomes obscured. However, the system overall performance can be simulated using CFD model for porous medium.

Abstract:
Utilizing the double-porosity approach it is assumed that porous medium is constituted by two groups of pores in such way that major mass transport takes place mostly along the network of larger pores (group 1) and these larger (stem) pores are surrounded by the medium formed by the dead-end porous of fractal geometry (group 2). Solving analytically equation for the stem pore from the group 1 and accounting for the mass exchange with pores from the group 2, it is proved that diffusion in a stem pore should be described by the fractional differential equation. Based on this result, equation of mass flux that models non-Fickian diffusion in complex fractal medium is proposed. Applying this generalized form of mass transfer equation for modeling the contaminant transport in fractured porous aquifer leads to a fractional order differential equation, where mass exchange between blocks and fractures is modeled by the temporal fractional derivatives. This equation is solved analytically.

Abstract:
We present a modeling study of the effective thermal conductance of metal foams as a thermal interface focusing on the electronics cooling applications. Metal foam material as a porous media has been considered for several applications because of its significantly large surface area for a given volume. In the electronics cooling, aluminum porous heat sinks have been well studied. It is not only cost effective due to the unique production process, but also attractive for the theoretical modeling study to determine the performance. In the past studies, effective thermal conductivity for heat transfer through solid with the tetrahedral geometry, while the pores, assumed to have vacant volumes, has been modeled. Instead of allowing the refrigerant flow through the connected pores in the porous medium, we considered the vacant space filled with stationary air. The major transport of the heat is considered to flow through the solid bridges, which connect the onside to the other side directly. Thus, the porous density for our application shall be relatively lower than the best value for heat sink applications. It must, however, be in a specific range such that it is mechanically compliant to make proper contact to both, the cooling target surface and the heat sink surface. It is obvious that the smaller pore ratio makes the metal foam stiffer. We model the contact thermal performance with considering the mechanical stiffness as a function of pore ratio as well as an intrinsic thermal conductance across the metal foam. Due to the limited literature of the variation of the pore size, we present the first order analysis assuming a fixed and uniform pore size.

Abstract:
Evaporation process is a crucial part of many fundamental industrials and medicals process. This paper numerically model a novel method of steam generation and enhanced evaporation using solar thermal energy. In this model, a capillary-raised fluid flows through a porous medium under localized heating condition, and the phase change from liquid to vapor at the liquid-vapor interface occurs. The hydrophilic porous material facilitates the capillary forces for better transportation of the bulk water through the porous media to the surface of porous media where the absorbed solar energy deliver to the amount of water inside the pores. The high capillary force due to the micro size inter connected pores inside the medium will rise the fluid from the cold bulk reservoir and the highly concentrated solar radiation focused inside the medium will evaporates the liquid very effectively. Based on this approach, the absorbed solar energy is delivered into the specific small pores of porous media that initiate the localized evaporation process. The steam generated from this economical technique could be used greatly for thermal solar desalinations process, sterilization process, etc. A CAD model of such porous media was developed using SolidWorks package. The mesh will be generated on the CAD file and the model was imported into the ANSYS Fluent for solving the governing equations. The mass transfer along with the fluid flow and heat transfer then solved. The simulations were done under different conditions including the hour distribution of irradiation in an average summer day and winter day to estimate steam generation rate. Produced vapor were from 13.96 kg/m2 to 18.95 kg/m2 in typical summer and winter days, respectively. The results show a temperature changes between 26.9°C and 54.4 °C. Development of the 3D numerical model and its implementation in existing data facilitates better understanding of the transport phenomena through the porous media.

Abstract:
Nanoporous materials consist of nanosize voids embedded in a solid matrix. The pores can be closed or open and have various shapes and sizes. Their applications range from optical and optoelectronics devices to biosensors. In order to effectively utilize and characterize nanoporous media for these various applications, models that describe their effective optical properties are necessary. Numerous effective medium models have been proposed. However, validations of these models against experimental data are often contradictory and inconclusive. This issue was numerically investigated by solving the two-dimensional Maxwell’s equations in absorbing nanoporous silicon thin-films. All interfaces are assumed to be optically smooth and characteristic pore size is much smaller than the wavelength of incident radiation so electromagnetic wave scattering by pores can be safely neglected. The envelope method was then used to retrieve the effective index of refraction and absorption index from the computed transmittance. The numerical results agree very well for both the index of refraction and the absorption index with a recent model obtained by applying the Volume Averaging Theory (VAT) to the Maxwell’s equations. However, commonly used models such as the Maxwell-Garnett, Bruggeman, parallel, and series models systematically and sometimes significantly underpredict the numerical results.

Abstract:
Two-dimensional Nano-porous (NP) and micro-porous (MP) materials are currently used in a variety of applications which require the knowledge of the thermal conductivity (k). In NP and MP materials, two pertinent length scales determine the phonon thermal conductivity: 1) the ratio of inter-pore distance, δ, and the mean free path (m.f.p.) of phonons, 1, 2) the ratio of the pore diameter, d, and the m.f.p. of phonons. This is schematically shown in Fig. 1. In the traditional diffusion-approximation (macroscopic models) based models (1 ≪ d, δ) for the thermal conductivity of porous materials, the effective thermal conductivity, keff, of the porous material for a given shape of the pores and direction of the heat flow is only a function of the volume fraction (φ) of the pores. Therefore, in the diffusion approximation, keff can be written as keff=kmf(φ)(1) where km is the thermal conductivity of the host medium. Our focus is on cylindrical pores. We only consider the heat flow in the transverse direction as shown in Fig. 1a. For example, if φ <40%, Maxwell-Garnett effective medium model (MG EMM) can be used. f(φ) for MG EMM is given by f(φ)=1−φ1+φ(2) Experimental data on two-dimensional micro-porous silicon made of cylindrical pores have shown that the macroscopic model given by Eq. (1) grossly over predicts keff of the porous materials. In MP and NP materials, the phonon transport is ballistic in nature because of the dominant scattering of phonons from the pore boundaries. Ballistic transport becomes dominant when m.f.p is comparable to or larger than d and δ. In this regime, the Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) must be solved without invoking the diffusion approximation. Solving the BTE for such a complex network of pores is a challenging task, and a few previous works exist where BTE was solved numerically under various simplifying assumptions regarding the geometry and the arrangement of the pores. Both of these investigations assumed rectangular pores for two-dimensional composite or cubical pores for three-dimensional composites; however, in reality, these pores are never so simple in their geometry. Typically, these pores are cylindrical in shape for two-dimensional composites and nearly spherical in shape for three-dimensional composites. The solution of BTE for the multitude of non-planar pores, although achievable, will be a very tedious task.

Abstract:
Abstract Porous media compressed air energy storage (PM-CAES) is an emerging technology that stores compressed air in an underground aquifer during the off-peak periods, to mitigate the mismatch between energy supplies and demands. Thus, PM-CAES involves repeated two-phase fluid flow in porous media, and ensuring the success of PM-CAES requires a better understanding of repetitive two-phase fluid flow through porous media. For this purpose, we previously developed microfluidic channels that retain a two-dimensional (2D) pore network. Because it was found that the geometry of the pore structure significantly affects the patterns and occupational efficiencies of a non-wetting fluid during the drainage-imbibition cycles, a more realistic microfluidic model is needed to reflect the three-dimensional (3D) nature of pore structures in the underground geologic formation. In this study, we developed an easy-to-adopt method to fabricate a microfluidic device with a 3D random pore network using a sacrificial sugar template. Instead of using a master mold made in photolithography, a sacrificial mold was made using sugar grains so that the mold could be washed away after PDMS curing. First, we made sugar templates with different levels of compaction load, and found that the thickness of the templates decreased as the compaction load increased, which suggests more packing of sugar grains and thus lower porosity in the template. Second, we fabricated PDMS porous media using the sugar template as a mold, and imaged their pore structure using micro computed tomography (micro-CT). Pores within PDSM samples appeared more tightly packed as the compacting force increased. Last, we fabricated a prototype PDMS channel device with a 3D pore network using a sugar template, and visualized flow through the pore network using colored water. The flow visualization result shows that the water was guided by the random pores and that the resultant flow pattern was three dimensional.
