Abstract:
The study examined the influence of work automation on the performance of Nigeria ports. The study population was the entire sea-ports in Nigeria. In line with the purpose of study, the study adopted the survey/cross sectional approach. The major research instrument used collect data was the questionnaire. Thirty (30) copies of questionnaire were distributed to the respondents from the six major sea-ports in Nigeria. The respondents were department heads and senior port managers. Work automation was used as the independent variable of the study and measures of port performances were productivity and the throughput level of the sea-port. Two hypotheses were developed and tested to determine the extent of the relationship between the study variables. Pearson product moment analysis was used to test the stated hypotheses with the aid of statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS 22.0). The findings of the study revealed that to a very large extent, work automations are often used as key performance indicators (KPI) in Nigeria port. This is true of the system of administration of all port management authority in Nigeria. To a very large extent, the study observed that ports give room for the assessment of work automations. To a very large extent, the respondents were allowed to make variety of inputs on work automations in their various sea-ports. Staff of the ports have the requisite skills to give critical assessment on the issues of work automations. Conclusively, it is evident from the study that there is significant relationship between work automations and productivity in Nigerian ports and there is significant relationship between work automations and cargo throughputs in Nigerian ports. Therefore, port managers should improve on the service quality of their port by recommending improve work automation of the port activities in such a manner that will aid the effective performances of the port operations.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Aerial ports are being modernized with automated technologies, but the impact on musculoskeletal injury (MSKI) is unknown.METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study of U.S. Air Force aerial port technicians and traffic management technicians, we compared reported injury rates from January 2006–December 2016 and Veterans Benefits Administration disability compensation claims awarded from January 2001–March 2017. Ton-adjusted injury rates, associated lost/affected duty time, and percent risk attributable to lack of automation were compared at Dover Air Force Base (which features base-specific automation), Travis Air Force Base, Ramstein Air Base, and Yokota Air Base.RESULTS: Injuries most often occurred during aircraft/flight line activities and were typically sprains/strains, with extremities being most affected. Among aerial port technicians there were 8.0 injury reports per 1000 person-years compared to 5.2 per 1000 among traffic management technicians (incidence rate ratio = 1.5; 95% CI: 0.9, 3.0). Of the aerial port technicians with a compensation award, 70.7% included an MSKI component, whereas 75.7% of traffic management awards included an MSKI component. Aerial port technicians at Dover AFB experienced 1.4 injury reports per 1000 personnel per 1000 cargo-tons per year, lower than the other ports: 3.2 (Travis); 3.7 (Ramstein); and 7.6 (Yokota). Overall, 56% of injuries at Travis, 62% at Ramstein, and 82% at Yokota could be attributed to absence of Dover-like automation. However, mean lost/affected duty days at Dover (12.4) far exceeded those at the other bases (range: 4.5–8.6).DISCUSSION: Automating aerial ports may reduce injury rates, but the impact on lost/affected duty time requires further investigation.Bylsma VFH, Webber BJ, Erich RA, Voss JD. Abstract:
There are many reasons for conducting research involving the basic sanitation sector in Brazil, among these reasons are some very peculiar characteristics related to this sector, ranging from features to their design and form of organization to maintenance. This paper provides practical insight into the application of automation technologies in sanitation systems and aims to expose a set of solutions focused on automation of viable water supply that can be applied even in municipalities that manage their own water supply. Automated systems are characterized mainly by the need to purchase to send information from one or more operational control centers to remote stations located in diverse locations such as densely urbanized centers, non-urban areas, restricted access locations, coastal areas, areas port, underground cities and localities of high topography. This diversity of characteristics requires a set of automation solutions. Supervision and management information for the control and management of the supply system in an integrated and efficient.

Abstract:
Automation is considered as the basis for the introduction of the fourth industrial revolution in ports and for the implementation of a number of innovations. Often the actual results of container terminal automation do not match the expectations of terminal operators. Through the application of scientific methods of investigation – monitoring, comparative analysis, analysis and synthesis of existing publications on the subject – some problematic issues have been established, such as the lack of common standards, pressure by trade unions, processing of exceptions, etc., calling into question the implementation of any good automated terminal project. The synergistic approach in the modeling, construction and exploitation of automated container terminals leads to the conclusion that, on one hand, a solution to the above issues should be sought in the cooperation between all port stakeholders (automation system manufacturers, software developers, terminal and logistics operators, carriers). On the other hand, the competitiveness of automated container terminals depends on the skills of the port specialists. They must be prepared for the monitoring, analysis and management of automated systems, they must be adequately qualified for the integration of systems and for the processing of exceptions, they must be able to foresee the consequences of each of their actions for the whole system.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the denomination of “smart” is associated with several production and management devices and to logistics and distribution, too. Thus, this qualification is used in different application fields. All of them are different and diverse, but the most important common characteristics of these devices or Smart Systems are based on their novel and more efficient way of working. The smart trend is consolidated in the port environment, too. The ports’ need to become more intelligent is modifying their own operations. Therefore, this paper includes an analysis of Spanish Port System, in order to evaluate its ports, considering the new concept called “Smart Port”. Some indicators and measure variables are defined, to allow for quantifying technical items. These items—both quantitative and qualitative ones—which reflect, in the most objective and complete way possible, the adaptation and achievement of characteristics and objectives associated with the Smart Port concept in all ports were studied, in order to obtain an index of Smart Ports that allows us to calculate the ranking of the Spanish Smart Ports. Considering the analysis of the Smart Port concept and its current and future trends, it has been determined that the development of a port must be based on the digitalization, on use of ICT and on automation of port processes.

Abstract:
Purpose Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are technologies that make a global impact by optimizing manual and time-intensive processes using data analytics and robotics, thus making the task more efficient, effective and less time-consuming. This is represented in the cyber-physical context, in which humans and technologies are allowed to coexist and learn from each other. Design/methodology/approach The logistics and supply chain sector consists of numerous partners and stakeholders, and despite the limited inclusion of automation and AI within the sector, there are still many manual and repetitive tasks. Findings Stakeholders in the logistics and supply chain sector are creating awareness and slowly implementing AI and automation within their operations. The majority of shipping and logistics is done through the maritime sector, and this is expected to increase in line with the world’s population. Research limitations/implications Research was limited to Jamaica and a few other countries in the Caribbean. Broadening the scope to include other regional shipping and logistics industry stakeholders would be helpful. Practical implications The removal of sometimes mundane and even more complex manual processes in the logistics supply chain will give rise to more efficiencies and possibly increased revenue. Social implications Creating awareness in the Caribbean of international trends is a challenge. Empowering people to use automation and AI for the mitigation and adaptation of climate change and other disasters is yet to be fully realized. However, those who took part in the study did show a significant inclination toward the use of automation and AI in their every-day lives. Originality/value The purpose of this paper is to examine statistical data on the understanding of automation and AI within education, the port authority and major operators in the shipping and logistics sector throughout the Caribbean.

Abstract:

"Industrialização do processo de desenvolvimento de software: Software Product Lines." Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/8241.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the early days of Software Engineering, researchers and practitioners have sought to improve the software development process. The lack of reuse and the low productivity rates are recurring concerns whose resolution has not proved to be simple. Over the last decade, the research community and industry have been studying the industrialization of the software development process. The ideas underlying this perspective are supported by the proposition that several industrial techniques should be compliant with software development, and that its implementation will bring substantial benefits to the traditional approach, namely, considerable productivity gains, costs reductions and quality improvements to the developed systems. Software Product Lines materialize this ―industrialized‖ version of the software development. The main baseline of this approach, consists on the shift from the present model, in which a system is built from a set of needs stated by a single customer, to a model that aims to the construction of a generic production platform that supports the development of a set (family) of systems that covers a related set of customers’ needs. According to the proponents of this theory, the multi-system approach will allow a massive and systematic component reutilization within the family members, which contributes to a considerable process optimization. This thesis attempts to organize the concepts related to Software Product Lines through a comprehensive analysis of the underlying theoretical principles and its practical implementation through existing techniques and technologies. Based on this knowledge, we propose a family-oriented development model (SPLUP), whose applicability is demonstrated by a case study and prototype development. In addition, two papers were submitted (CENTERIS 2011 and CAPSI 2011 conferences) to systematize the main conclusions and contributions of our work.

Abstract:
Port terminals play an integral role in the transportation logistics chain by providing cargo handling, storage, and warehousing services to a range of shipping lines, freight forwarders, and cargo owners. This chapter reports on a case study aimed at determining the challenges and limitations experienced with the current information and communication technology used in port terminals in Durban and examines how technological, organizational, and environmental factors influence port automation. A quantitative approach was adopted, and a questionnaire was designed to collect data. The findings revealed that adequate technology needs to be acquired, and the compatibility and complexity of the technology have the biggest influence on the automation of terminal ports in Durban. Communication with stakeholders and IT skills retention were found to be the most important organizational factors and customer readiness emerged as an important environmental factor influencing the automation of port terminals in Durban.

Abstract:
Current standardized e-learning systems are centred on the concept of learning object. Unfortunately, specifications and standards in the field do not provide details about the use of well-known knowledge representations for the sake of automating some processes, like selection and composition of learning objects, or adaptation to the user or platform. Precise usage specifications for ontologies in e-learning would foster automation in learning systems, but this requires concrete, machine-oriented interpretations for metadata elements. This chapter focuses on ontologies as shared knowledge representations that can be used to obtain enhanced learning object metadata records in order to enable automated or semi-automated consistent processes inside Learning Management Systems. In particular, two efforts towards enhancing automation are presented: a contractual approach based on pre- and post-conditions, and the so-called process semantic conformance profiles.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated trends to digitalization and automation, which allow us to acquire massive datasets useful for managerial decision making. The expected increase of available data (including big data) will represent a potential for an increasing deployment of management decision support systems for more general and more complex tasks. Sophisticated decision support systems have been proposed already in the pre-pandemic times either to assist managers in specific decision-making processes or to perform the decision making fully automatically. Decision support systems are presented in this chapter as perspective artificial intelligence tools contributing to a deep transform of everyday management practices. Attention is paid here to their new development in the quickly transforming post-COVID-19 era and to their role under the post-pandemic conditions. As an original contribution, this chapter presents a vision of information-based management, which far exceed the rather limited pre-pandemic visions of evidence-based management focused primarily on critical thinking.

Abstract:
The reduction of post-harvest losses and value addition of the horticultural corps has attained the higher priority of the current research works. Grading is the major phase in post-harvest handling. Presently grading is done on the basis of observation and through experience. Various drawbacks associated with such manual grading are subjectivity, tediousness, labor requirements, availability, inconsistency, etc. Such problems can be alleviated by incorporating automation in the process. Researchers round the clock are working towards the development of technology-driven solutions in order to grade/sort/classify various agricultural and horticultural produce. With the motto of helping the researchers in the field of grading and quality assessment of fruits and other horticulture products, the present work endeavors the following major contributions: (1) a precise and comprehensive review on technology-driven solutions for grading/sorting/classification of fruits, (2) major research gaps addressed by the researchers, and (3) research gaps to be addressed.

Abstract:
A number of industries in other sectors have experienced substantial improvements in productivity due to the implementation of new technologies and associated working practices. In the industry of the built environment these new technologies and working practices are helping to bring about global “construction industry transformation.” Very large and complex three dimensional design and construction information databases can now be aggregated and managed collaboratively over the internet by large project teams working remotely from each other. Whilst person to person meetings are still essential for project teams, a certain amount of remote working can be accommodated. In the past, construction projects experienced many problems resulting from incompletely coordinated and two dimensional construction information that often contained inaccuracies and inconsistencies. The improved quality of design and construction information that is being produced now is making it possible to deliver better quality buildings. By reducing abortive works on site, buildings can be delivered on time and with reduced post construction claims and penalties. Accelerated and enhanced innovation is being enabled by connecting state of the art modelling and simulation technologies directly to the three dimensional design and construction databases. This is making it possible to deliver previously impossible designs. Affordable mass customization and the potential for industry supply chain integration is being enabled by the application of automation to design and construction information management. Additional improvements in efficiency and innovative design, delivery and facilities management are being made possible by this integration of all aspects of the supply chain (i.e. industry supply chain integration). In addition, substantial improvements to the everyday quality of life throughout the world will be brought about by the growing application of parametric generative computer-aided design, virtual prototyping, and lifecycle analysis and simulation.

Abstract:
Mini-invasive surgery deserves increasing attention to lower the post-operative stay in hospital and lessen falls-off complications. This leads to the trends in robots, as innovative integrated computer-aided implements. Out of front-end haptic effectors, the background support is turning to inclusive on-duty functions, e.g., surgical planners, operation assistants, etc., making possible the rethinking of protocols to progressively embed the innovations offered by the micro- and nano-technologies. The chapter brings in surgical robotics, with focus on technology and design issues of the remote-mode operation assistants. The investigation leads to define the technical characteristics of a CRHA, Co-Robotic Handling Appliance, to be purposely developed, to support the duty-split approach surgical planner. The expected features are outlined, including analysis of operation potential of special-purpose contrivances (i.e., automatic changing device of the surgical tools) and of scope-driven enhancers (i.e., exploration of the intervention theatre, IT).
