Magpantay, Josef Joachim L. "Anatomy of a financial center's global competitiveness in the context of Michael Porter's model of national competitive advantage a theoretical analysis." Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/464.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout history, a number of financial centers have risen and fallen. While the significance of some centers have deteriorated, a small number of centers have emerged as today's leading financial centers by meeting a specific set of necessary conditions needed to successfully address the growing financial needs of the regions they are located. Furthermore, an even smaller number of financial centers have been able to sustain and expand their initial dominance in the financial industry by continuously satisfying a more focused set of conditions and factors. This thesis focuses on adapting Michael Porter's Diamond Model in determining, clustering, and expanding key factors that have historically given cities such as London, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo their current status at the pinnacle of the financial centers of the world. This thesis begins by taking Porter's model that addresses national competitive advantage nations from a macroeconomic point of view, and adapting it to the development of financial centers at a microeconomic level. It utilizes Michael Porter's established grouping corners for identifying a vast array of macroeconomic and microeconomic factors that have historically played critical roles in increasing productivity and efficiency within a center's financial industry. Additionally, this thesis categorizes these factors into parameters that form a theoretical model designed to showcase the path to global financial dominance for an aspiring financial center. With the adaptation of Porter's model outlined in this thesis, financial centers are given a figurative blueprint of what constitutes a successful financial center. The theoretical model analyzes the necessary conditions and environments that a center needs to recreate within itself, or are endowed with, in order to be a globally competitive financial center.

Abstract:
University performance assessment emerged as an active and growing field of research alongside the emergence of neoliberalism in the public sector in the 1980s. With increased interest in evaluation methodologies and their application two knowledge gaps emerged: (1) the absence of a universal method to assess the performance of universities; (2) a lack of knowledge and expertise to perform these evaluations. The direction of the present research in pursuance of closing the identified knowledge gaps was determined to a great degree by the consideration that when universities are predominantly viewed as corporate enterprises, an investigation into the assessment of the performance of universities should explore and exploit the lessons to be learned from the corporate sector. Here, the review of the literature hinted at using Porter's seminal diamond model as a generic approach to assess the competitive strength of higher education institutes. The contribution to methods in the present research includes the identification of the key attributes of each corner of the diamond and their relative importance in the determination of the competitive condition of the diamond for the assessed universities. In addition, there is an adaptation of Porter's Four stages of competitive development model and thematic maps providing illuminating insights into the process of creating and upgrading competitiveness in research. The contribution to professional practice in this thesis is that its findings help university decision makers frame the numerous determinants of research performance into a coherent pattern so providing them with a succinct overview of the competitive condition of the university and simultaneously avoiding an information overflow. The discoveries in the present research will enable university decision makers to understand the cause-and-effect relationships between the determinants and performance better and will give direction to strategy development.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the issue of cluster dynamics. The theoretical basis is the Porter’s diamond model of industrial clusters and the analysis pursued in the thesis considers the impact of foreign ownership on Porter’s determinants of successful cluster: factor conditions, demand conditions, supported industries and, finally, firms’ strategies and structures. According to Porter, sustainability of clusters is a function of its dynamics and propensity to change, which in turn depends on these four components of the national home base. The analysis is based on a comprehensive set of case studies conducted for the life science industrial cluster located in the Stockholm-Uppsala area. The results indicate that foreign ownership has positive effect on the dynamism of the cluster.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Title: The Internet and Marketing: A case study of SmartGuy AB. and PostNord AB. Level: D-Level Final Master Thesis in Business Administration Authors: Naa A. Allotey and Ashenafi T. Degefie Supervisor: Professor Akmal Hyder Date: 2013 June Aim: Technology has changed the way businesses are being done specifically in the internet marketing. Even though the growth & development of internet marketing is rapid, many new firms doing e-business are increasing. To make use of this ever increasing opportunity many companies without adequate knowledge and lack of concepts about internet marketing enter into this business that leads into failure. This study examines how businesses use the internet as an effective marketing tool in order to increase business efficiency and survive in the competitive business. The study also identifies the various problems that are affecting the internet marketing business and review possible strategies. Method: The study adopted a qualitative method through a deductive approach. Research questions were developed to gather the data. A semi structured interview was conducted with personnel from Nordpost and SmartGuy. The data was analysed and linked with the theory to provide answers to the research questions. To enhance the richness of the study secondary data sources has been employed in a form of scientific articles, literature, annual reports from the case companies and online sources.  Results and Conclusions: The result of this study shows that the rapid development of online marketing makes it imperative for businesses to seriously consider the internet as a marketing tool in order to remain competitive. There is no specific strategy to adopt but firms could develop internet marketing strategies depending on the nature of their business in order to cope up with the ever changing environment. It also identified the difficulties traditional marketers face when integrating internet marketing. The conclusion is that businesses can overcome the barriers affecting Internet marketing if they take time to identify their micro and macro environments and adopt appropriate strategies. Suggestions for future research: Although this study identified that there are some factors affecting the internet marketing and suggested key elements in developing e-marketing strategy, the results of this study and conclusion, to some extent have some limitations.  Firstly there are only two case companies investigated which makes it hard to generalize the outcomes. Secondly, current literatures in the area of study were very limited showing that researchers are not really giving time to this all important topic.  Thus future research could look more into this subject area, broaden the scope of the investigation to more companies and could also concentrate in the areas where there is a need for a unique strategy development for different internet companies. Future researchers could also look at how the transition from traditional to internet marketing could be made very simple. Contribution of the thesis: The study provides significant insights into the factors affecting internet marketing and e-business strategies that can be adopted to make it an effective marketing tool, a topic often overlooked by published material. Even though there are no specific e-marketing strategies to directly copy or implement, the study suggests specific areas a business should take into consideration while developing the strategy. For businesses, the question of using the internet as a marketing tool should be one of ‘when, why and how’. A well-structured and well thought out business plan which is still applicable is the backbone of any company who is going to be successful in the e-commerce industry.

This dissertation illustrates an empirical application of Porter's (1990, 2004) Diamond Model using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM; Wold, 1975, 1982) method in order to assess the effects of the microeconomic business environment on firms' competitive advantage and the government's supportive role in improving such an environment. It follows a concurrent triangulation design and takes firms in the Portuguese Engineering & Tooling cluster as the basic unit of analysis. The findings from the path analysis derive from a total number of 168 questionnaire responses obtained from firms in the cluster, which were subsequently triangulated with secondary data and interviews conducted with several cluster stakeholders. These findings reveal a positive effect of the related and supporting industries, the context for firm strategy and rivalry, and the factor (input) conditions at the cluster level on firms' competitive advantage. Government action has also been shown to have a positive effect on the four determinants of the Diamond Model. Conversely, respondents' perceptions do not support a positive effect of the demand conditions at the cluster level on firms' competitive advantage. The positive and negative effects of the Engineering & Tooling cluster's environment on the competitive edge of firms highlight the catalytic roles of the government and collective action in cluster upgrading.

Export development plays an important role in promoting economic growth and development. Understanding of export competitiveness has primarily been pursued in terms of economic variables and market conditions. This study involved an investigation into the determinants of export competitiveness of yerba mate cocido industry in Paraguay and to develop a framework to enhance the competitiveness of yerba mate cocido industry. This study takes Michael Porter’s (1998) diamond of national competitive advantage model that includes: demand condition, factor condition, related and supporting industries, firm strategy, structure and rivalry, role of chance and the rol of government; to assess the nature of competition and Paraguayan competitiveness respectively. This integrated approach is essential to identify the possible strategies for the Paraguayan Yerba Mate Cocido industry to improve the competitiveness. A qualitative research approach was used and Porter’s diamond model was taken as proposed model of this study. Face to face interviews with the structured questionnaire was used to collect primary data from the three different sources, two from the Paraguayan government (REDIEX) and one from the private sector (Centro Yerbatero Paraguayo). Key stakeholders of yerba mate cocido exporting area were considered as the respondents. Supported by the empirical evidences, this research reveals that the intensity of competition in the global Yerba Mate Cocido industry is very high. Moreover, Paraguay has many unfavorable conditions together with some favorable conditions. Finally some strategies are recommended to improve the Paraguayan competitiveness in the global tea industry.

National energy security in Taiwan is vulnerable, because of its high dependency on imported fossil fuels. Approximately 98% of Taiwanese fuel reserves are shipped from abroad, thus Taiwanese government relies on volatile oil prices and does not have a control over the petrol price within the country. It is considered as an important problem, because of its complicated political situation and that is why the government is trying to find alternative energy resources. One of the options is fuel with additive of bioethanol, which gained a wide popularity in many countries in the last decades. In order to understand the current state of bioethanol industry in Taiwan and in this way, look for improvement propositions, this industry was compared to that of Germany, one of the world’s leaders in bioethanol production and one of the biggest consumers in the EU. Porter’s Diamond Model was used to elaborate the competitiveness of bioethanol industry in both countries, next, their competitiveness was compared. After the analysis, it was found that German bioethanol industry have several advantages over Taiwanese. These were used to derive possible points of improvement in the Taiwanese bioethanol sector. Overall recommendation to Taiwan bioethanol industry is to continue supporting the use of bioethanol through increasing Research and Development projects and popularizing this alternative among customers.

Sinngu, Takalani. "Competitiveness of the South African citrus fruit industry relative to its southern hemisphere competitors." Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18703.

Full text
Abstract:
The South African citrus fruit industry faces enormous challenges in the global markets, such as an increasing demand for higher quality citrus fruits, as well as increasing fierce competition from the southern hemisphere citrus producing countries. Its long history of global integration makes it highly sensitive to international developments, as well as domestic ones. The purpose of the study is to investigate the competitiveness of the South African citrus fruit industry relative to its southern hemisphere competitors – namely, Argentina, Australia, Uruguay, Chile and Peru. Both local and international literature on the citrus fruit industries was used as part of the analysis. In addition to this, a variety of methods and techniques were applied. These included the three well-recognised indices which were used to calculate the competitive indices of various citrus fruit product categories – namely, the Balassa Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA#) index, the Net Export index (NXi) and the Relative Revealed Comparative Trade Advantage (RTA) index. Time series data on South African and southern hemisphere major producing countries’ citrus fruit imports and exports were used to calculate the competitiveness indices using Excel spreadsheets. A structured questionnaire was also used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data of expert views from key industry stakeholders. Data collected were analysed using Excel spreadsheets and the Porter methodology. The competitiveness analysis of this study clearly pointed out that the South African citrus fruit industry reveals more competitive advantage in some citrus fruit products than its southern hemisphere counterparts. The results of the RCA#, NXi and RTA indices analyses clearly showed that the domestic industry has a stronger and relatively higher revealed competitive advantage in three citrus fruit product categories – namely, oranges, grapefruit and grapefruit juice than its southern hemisphere competitors. However, its orange competitiveness decreases when moving from primary orange to orange juice. This means that the value-adding opportunities are still lacking in the orange sub-sector. One possible reason for this could be the high rates of return recorded for farm-level applications of technology for most primary orange commodities. This study identified the availability of skilled employees, quality of unskilled labour, cost of doing business in the industry, services from financial institution, electricity supply, land reform and some other government policies, such as trade policy, labour policy, BEE policy iv and tax system as the major factors impeding the competitiveness of the industry. The list also included the current climatic conditions, high incidences of HIV/AIDS and crime, economic instability and the cost of technology and infrastructure in the industry. Despite the challenges mentioned above, quality of skilled labour; general level of development and quality of infrastructure and technology in the industry; quality of soils; the availability of scientific research institutions and the collaboration of the industry with these institutions; availability and quality of local suppliers of primary inputs; and market information flow were found to have a positive influence on the competitiveness of the industry. In order for the industry to enhance its competitiveness, a number of recommendations and strategies are suggested at the end of this study.

After the collapse of Soviet Union in 1990s, Russia has successfully transferred from planned economy to a market-based one; however, it has not performed so well in transforming its economic structure and chose to rely on its abundant natural resources such as oil, natural gas, metals etc. When commodity prices were high, Russia’s economic development looked good at first glance, however, the recent trends in both global and Russian economy show that such strategy is not sustainable. Russian economy needs a new engine of growth, and, after taking into consideration the vast territory, lack of infrastructure as well as relatively weak industrial base, software industry seems to be a very suitable choice. This study uses the diamond model proposed by Michael Porter in 1990 and amended by John Dunning in 1993 to assess the international competitiveness of Russia’s software industry from two perspectives: - feasibility for foreign firms to outsource software development to Russia, - possibility for Russian firms to create products and services that are competitive on the global market Unlike previous researches on this topic, this paper not only outlines the strengths and weaknesses that Russia’s software industry has right now, but also proposes a series of policy measures for decision makers at various levels aimed at supporting the strengths and addressing the shortcomings. In this study, policy implications have been arranged in a system based on the four determinants of Porter’s diamond and have been divided into five levels, namely individual firm, industry, cross-industry, government and multinational; also, the importance of cooperation and coordination between various levels has been emphasized many times. The results have been organized into a table to make it easier to grasp the essence of this research. It has been found that, while Russia does have competitive advantage in, for example, highly skilled human resources, also, the deterioration in macroeconomic environment has had a limited impact on the IT and software industry development, such issues as shortsighted firm strategies, shortcomings in startup ecosystem, slow adjustment of education system to latest tendencies on the labor market, serious lack of non-tax support from the government as well as low level of globalization has become an obstacle to a further improvement in global competitiveness of the industry in question. In order to withstand the competitive pressure from China, India and other emerging economies, policy and decision makers at various levels should coordinate their efforts in addressing those shortcomings and making software industry a new engine of growth for Russian economy.

Abstract As far as the growth of the domestic economic developement is concerned, the establishment of the industrial park contributes a lot to industrial developement and economic growth. However, over the past few years reveal that many of old industrial parks are out-dated and obsolete, thus rendering them incapable of manufacturing and/or producing state of the art or high-tech goods and services. An industrial park biggest competitive leverage lies on its optimal environment and conditions for manufacturing and providing quality services. If an industrial park does not posses such environment and conditions, it loses its competitive edge. The professor of the Harvard University in America and the author of « The Competitive Advantage of Nations” brings up the theory of ‘’Diamond system’’,which indicates that the nation plays a crucial role in the success of enterprise’s competitiveness. Some nations seem to be able to provide better environment that boosts the industry progress and upgrading than other nations. The relation between a nation and the industrial competitiveness is equivalent to the capability of a nation to boost the industry in order to improve and innovate. Porter elucidates that innovation is not only based on the new techniques researched and developed by industry, but also on the location of it, both of them will decide whether the innovation activity is successful or not. The subject of this thesis focuses on “The Porter’s Diamond Model” as a study on how to improve Taiwan’s industrial parks’ competitive edge. The result tells us that the five dimensions to accelerate the competitive capacity of industrial parks differs from the degree of importance and satisfaction, which means that the five dimensions of the industrial parks do not live up to the expectation of the clients of an industrial park and thus there are still a lot of room for improvement to accelarate the competitiveness of the industrial parks. According to clients of an industrial park, their satisfaction in doing business with such park are:cost of real estate for either leasing or buying; availability and accessibility of assistance in the administrative procedures and the manufacturing of goods and products;cost saving;flexibility in switching and changing of skills and upgrading them;availability of assistance in modernizing technology from traditional methods to state of the art, and so on. The five requirements mentioned above are the main concerns of clients. However, the quality of costumer service is just as important. At the same time, an industrial park must constantly strive to provide the best services possible to maintain any competitive edge. Therefore, in order to accelarate the competitiveness of the industrial parks, service centre needs to work on these gaps.

Abstract:
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Engineering, 2020
In 2017, it was estimated that South Africa had about 80% of the manganese global resources, but produced only about 36% of the global manganese production. About 90% of the global output of manganese is currently utilised in steel production a nd there is currently no substitute for manganese in steel production. The global outlook for steel demand is expected to continue on a growth path into the near future. The expected increase in manganese demand is expected to lead to the need for the global manganese industry to invest in additional production capacity to meet the demand. South Africa needs to be more competitive regarding its significant manganese resources in order to grow her share of the global production. The aim of this research study was to conduct a competitiveness analysis of the manganese industry using Porter’s diamond model. Porter’s diamond model was used because when it was compared to other competitiveness analysis models, it was found to be relatively more holistic. Porter’s diamond model has four main aspects of the model, which are the factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, and company structure, strategy and rivalry. The competitiveness of the South African manganese industry was compared to the manganese industries in Brazil, India, Ukraine, Australia, and Gabon since these countries have significant manganese resources outside of China and are major manganese producers. The South African and Gabonese manganese industries were found to be less competitive in terms of the factor conditions compared to Australian, Brazilian, Indian and Ukrainian manganese industries. However, when it comes to the demand conditions, related and supporting industries and company strategies, structure and rivalry the South African manganese industry was found to be competitive or on par with the other major manganese producing countries. Overall, the Australian, Indian and Brazilian manganese industries were found to be more competitive than South Africa and Gabon. In conclusion, the South African manganese industry was found to be less competitive when Porter’s diamond model was used to analyse competitiveness. The South African manganese industry requires significant improvement mostly in the factor conditions in order to be competitive like Australia, Brazil and India. Issues such as quality education of its citizens in key sectors that drive the economy, the upgrading of the manganese, the management of scarce water resources, access to electricity and the threat of renewables on electricity costs, limited capital resources and foreign direct investment, and logistics competitiveness need to be addressed

Since the government initiated the national health insurance in March 1995, the insurance revenue has been very limited. Over the past 15 years, the number of hospital has been reduced to 270 by 33% due to the implementation of the payment control system. To maintain competitiveness and sustainable development, the hospitals must develop the self-paying market out of the fierce domestic competition market. The international medical tourism industry has experienced a rapid growth. In 2011, the output value of the international medical tourism is expected to be 400 hundred millions. As Taiwan has various travel resources, outstanding medical care quality and reasonable charges, how do the hospitals find their competitive advantages to compete with international competitors, also target on the 400 hundred million medical tourism business opportunities, and allow the tourism industry to regain growth with the support from government? This study conducts a qualitative research by using “document analysis” and “in-depth interview”. Based on Porter’s diamond model and SWOT analysis, this study discusses the development of Taiwan’s medical tourism and also explores whether Taiwan has competitive advantages over its major competitors in Asia such as Singapore, Thailand and India. Further, the advantages, disadvantages, weaknesses and opportunities were given as references for government, medical organizations and the tourism industry to create Taiwan’s competitive advantages toward the international trend of the medical tourism. Through the analysis of interview, it is found that Taiwan mainly targeted on Chinese market and has language and location advantages over its major Asian competitors Singapore, Thailand and India. However, it is very necessary for Taiwan to improve the cross-strait relationship, to prioritize the medical health travel, and continuously promote the critical care medicine in order to get more business opportunities in the medical tourism industry. Comparing to its major competitors, however, Taiwan does not have relative advantage of medical quality, expertise and price. Besides, Taiwan should enhance its horizontal alliance and international marketing and revise the relevant regulations in order to improve its competitive advantages. The recommendations of this study have the following three perspectives: (1) speed up the construction of medical tourism area to develop the clustering and the pull through effects; (2) build strategic alliance among hospitals to promote medical care travel;(3) actively modify the medical law to allow the medical advertisements and the commercialization of medical organizations.

FPD (Flat Panel Display) is one of “Two Trillion and Twin Star Development Program” lead by Taiwan’s industrial policy. Taiwan reached No. 1 capacity in end-product value and capacity by 2007, but then market share is declined gradually after Economy Tsunami in 2008. Due to the G8.5 capacity expansion in China and Korean makers keep leading in technology; Taiwanese makers are facing the most challenge situation. Recently an article entitled &;quot;Survival battle of Taiwanese makers in 500 days” mentioned about the upcoming eight G8.5 lines in China will be full in mass production soon. How do Taiwanese makers react to this situation and take immediately action to secure business? The management of firms has to face external challenges during growing up, seize chances under a dynamic environment, well utilize national competitive advantage to change industrial structure, learn to master the complex but reality competition with diversity orientation in addition to its core competitiveness, and then enhance its own competitive advantage through co-opetition strategies. Under current situation and fast technology development, we need to study FPD in a wider view to keep Taiwan’s competitive advantage. This study selects FPD industry, which is representative of the most competitive optoelectronics industry in Taiwan, for empirical study. It utilizes Michael E. Porter''s &;quot;diamond model&;quot; as the theoretical basis for the interpretation and analysis in order to gain a macro perspective to further competition strategic analysis. The study include the factors of production, supply and demand conditions, supply chain of brands, corporate strategy and brand manufacturers to compete with the industry, the role of government to integrate industry resources, the future challenges and opportunities. All discussion on above topics is based on the core of FPD industry, and takes interviews with managers of supply chain in-depth. This thesis is to identify the key success factors for co-competing strategies, and to enhance competitive advantage of Taiwan''s FPD makers while competing business with China, Japan, and South Korea makers. Most of all, it takes a further step to look into the possibility to combine research advantage of IT industry, utilize and bridge its strength to world-class home appliances, medical and automobile electronic brands. Finally, it suggests Taiwan government to refer the industrial development vision and strategy of China, Japan and Korea, and integrate FPD industry resources for a better tomorrow.

Professor Michael E. Porter (1990: Competitive Advantage of Nations) First propose the Diamond Model to explain why a nation can get international success in a specific industry. There are six determinants of the Diamond, which are (1)Factor Conditions, (2)Demand Conditions, (3)Related and Supporting Industries, (4)Firm Strategy, Structure nad Rivalry in the Country, (5)Government and (6)Chance. The main goal of Taiwan economic development plan cross centuries is to develop Taiwan to be the Asia-Pacific Operation Center. We have a great chance to make Taiwan "the Marine Transshipment Center", the key of success is to upgrade the competing capabilities of our ports. However, we need to know what are the specific items of the competitive advantage of ports? The study is trying to establish a class of efficient indices for evaluating the competitive advantage of ports, by applying Porter''s Diamond Model. According to the six "cuts" of the Diamond, we consider the propose indices in related literatures and some potential indices of efficiency might be explored. We will extract efficient indices with the helps of expert questionnaire and calculate the relative weights between these indices. Then we will try to formulate an Evaluation Model of the competitiveness of international ports, based on Porter''s Diamond. Finally, we will survey the competitive advantage of ports in Asia-Pacific area, and try to propose several alternatives of improvement for our ports.

With the rapid progress development of Internet technology and application, all developed countries are actively planning the prospective information and communication policies, with the expectation to provide comprehensive infrastructure and application service of broadband network, so as to promote the growth of information and communication industry and further improve the national competitiveness. With the whole construction of infrastructure and increasingly high penetration rate of the mobile devices, people have higher network demands: such as wider network coverage, larger bandwidth, and more flexible mobility. This thesis firstly discusses about WiMAX’s position in the wireless network technology and the current situation of WiMAX industry in other countries all over the world from the perspective of nation competitiveness. Next it makes comparison with the environmental conditions for Taiwan’s WiMAX development, attempting to work out the best development direction for reference when making decisions. The structure of the whole thesis takes Michael Porter’s diamond theory as the basis, the Five-Pointed Diamond Model developed by Chen Cheng-Nan and Tang Da-Chen as the reference foundation. After that, through the interview with the experts from the benchmarking enterprises or institutions in the WiMAX related industries, it verifies the obtained data by the DEMATEL method, and finally obtains the following conclusions: (1) Apart from improving the networking industry clusters and getting rapid response, the government should take part in making the new-generation technological specification, for the protection of the patented technology will make the practitioner more competitive in the global competition. (2) In spite of rapid development of other wireless broadband technologies, WiMAX still keeps innovation in this specification competition. Till now it has become a candidate of generation-Ⅳ mobile communication technology, and won’t cause any technological integration problem for the vendors that have invested into it earlier. (3) Among the five dimensions affecting the industrial competitiveness, “governmental support” and “local demands” can bring the greatest influence, into which the resources should be put primarily. The great support and promotion of governmental policies takes a crucial position, so the system operator should also think about the potential market, so as to make the right products and supplementary plans, but not make blind investments. This is the way to popularize it and improve the industrial development.

During the business running process, the executive managers must learn how to control the complicated and diverse factors in the reality competition, and thus to understand the advantages of the enterprise itself and environmental changes. Due to the application market which is gradually expanding and the product technology is keeping upgrading, Taiwan''s flat panel industries need to vigorously continue maintaining capital investment. But also because of the need to invest huge amounts of capital constantly, the allocation of resources derived from the country and society has become big concerns, the industry usually moving up &; down also has gradually caused serious social issues. Since the financial turmoil, the strength of mutual growth and decline among major manufacturers, which includes Korean manufacturers significantly, enhanced competitiveness and market share caused by depreciation of Korean won, panel self-sufficiency policy formulation and implementation in China, the decline in Japan''s LCD industry, etc. . Therefore, in the current situation and future development of the industrial structure changes, we need to study the macroscopic point of view and understanding of the following issues panel industry to continue to strengthen Taiwan''s relative competitive advantages: What is the impact of the international competitiveness of the flat panel industry factors? How government and business work together to create industrial competitiveness? How companies seeking competitive advantage? What are the major strategic issues? The flat panel industry in Taiwan are selected for the empirical study and Michael E. Porter''s "diamond model" are used as the theoretical basis for the analysis of competitive strategy. Research directions include the factors of "factor conditions ", "demand conditions", "related and supporting industries", "firm strategy, structure, and rivalry". High level executives of the flat panel makers, relative materials, equipment and other suppliers are chosen as the scope of the questionnaire. There are total 20 interviews, and 15 questionnaires were valid. For different development strategies and competitive advantage results of the questionnaire, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) proposed Thomas L. Saaty as an analytical method for the information and cross-validation analysis. Then this research have the proposal and executive directions about how to improve Taiwan''s flat panel industry and the relative competitive advantage internationally, as well as the implementation level to provide the best possible future competitive strategy. According to the research study, obtained the following conclusions and recommendations: 1. The most concerned dimension of the diamond model by the managers in the panel industry is “Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry." 2. The main policy of the second hierarchical structure are focused on "human resources", "market growth mode", "related industries", "manufacturing strategy", "government with", among which "related industries" is weighted sort first. 3. The top five strategies of the third hierarchical structure are summarized as follows: 3.1 Construct a complete flat panel industry supply chain system. 3.2 Priority to the development of high growth, high profit items in the market. 3.3 Focus on the mobile device market. 3.4 Enhancing investment in the field of education, and enrich the number of domestic high-tech talent and quality. 3.5 Innovative product development strategy.

Nano-technology is a multi-field development field mixed science and technology comprehensively, including physics, chemistry, material science, optics, electronics, biology, etc... The countries all over the world generally believe that lead the motive force of the next industrial revolution, will be changed from information technology, biotechnology to nano technology, and decide to make the investment in a more cost-effective manner . While the countries continuously developed nano technology in the whole world, Taiwan should be chosen to develop the nanotechnology industry tactics to some extent, elected the most suitable development tactics. This research analyzed present situation and excellent-inferior position of Taiwan nano science technology development, through Porter’s competitive advantage model, and put forward the suggestion of Taiwann nanotechnology development strategy on the original tradition and Hi-Tech industry. On the other hand, the stage of nano technology is still sprout, it is the most important how to innovate and form industry's clustering. Through the analysis of the key success factors of nano-industry, this research has designed a suitable innovative service platform of Taiwan nano industry, in order to improve the national whole competitiveness of Taiwan. Through study, the most suitable for Taiwan nano-industry development is traditional livelihood nano industry ,which can apply nanotechnology innovation to most of the original products , for instance petrochemical industry , plastics , textile , electrical home appliances, and food industry ,etc.; The second is to apply the nanotechnology to form the hi-tech industry that has gathered in Taiwan ,such as information technology industry, semiconductor industry and, photoelectric industry; The third is the new developing industries, for instance , biotechnology , environment and energy industry, etc., which still takes a very long time to develop and may not be profitable; The last is the industries that hope the nanotechnology to make the transition of industry upgrading , for instance metal, material, and machinery industry ,etc. For the Taiwan basic research talent insufficient, it’s better that only focus on some key fundamental nano materials. By analyzed Taiwan main nano-industries,we got the conclusion of the main competitive strategies of Taiwan nano-industry as follows: 1.The main strategies of Taiwan nano industry should be difference or focus on difference. 2.Taiwan should make the transition for the traditional industry of people's livelihood with industry's scale, and the commercialized nanotechnology application from the low reaches 3.The stepping alliance's mechanism and platform must be set up , which could make the relevant industry, officer and studying work together. 4.The nano products should be qualified and managed to secure the people. 5.It still needs a long-time development investment of the nanotechnology industry, and professional technique and multi-domain talents cultivation are the key points.

Abstract:
Context of study: The rise of China’s labor costs, and the fact that lower-wage countries have now manufacturing capacity, has pushed domestic apparel manufacturers to emphasize on two more profitable sectors: product development, and retail. This reflects a shift from Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to Original Brand Manufacturer (OBM), which brings challenges for the Chinese apparel companies, since domestic apparel manufacturers didn’t invest much in product development and design ability. Chinese fashion retailers do not play a leading role in the global industry, having only a few influential international brands. However, efforts have been made in order to innovate their merchandise distribution channels and improve promotion policies, to frame the domestic retail networks, appealing to consumers’ attention, and attain market share (Li 2002). Statement of Purpose: The aim of this paper is to firstly identify the difficulties that these private labels can face due to the typical Chinese consumer profile that is characterised by high spenders in haute couture in foreign markets rather than in the domestic market. Secondly, this phenomena might influence these private label brands to expand to international markets, which creates new difficulties due to the world’s perception of the low quality of products manufactured in China. Finally, how these Chinese private-label companies will create a brand equity, in domestic and foreign markets, in order to positioning themselves in the fashion market. Methodology: A multiple case study involving three Chinese apparel companies was employed. Abstract:
The present dissertation aims to understand the strategy dimensions that are at the core of ASPORTUGUESAS’s development. As written in the form of a case study, this thesis serves a pedagogical purpose by providing the essential tools for students to relate strategic frameworks to a real business situation. ASPORTUGUESAS represents a Portuguese cork footwear brand that was initially envisioned by a single entrepreneur. Nonetheless, by stemming from two distinct clusters, the brand benefited from the close cooperation and collaboration between member firms, ultimately establishing within the clusters’ internal network key alliances with the leaders in its respective industry, Corticeira Amorim and Kyaia. The two partnerships provided ASPORTUGUESAS with the support needed to escalate the business, by enabling access to miscellaneous R&C that proved crucial, particularly for the brand’s international market expansion. Accordingly, Clusters, Strategic Alliances and R&C emerge as the focal strategic elements sustaining ASPORTUGUESAS’s development and further market competitiveness. Therefore, the aforementioned strategic concepts represent the basis of this case analysis in an academic context, as it is meant to be discussed in light of strategy-based theory.

Abstract:
The following thesis, presented in the form of a case study, aims to report the successful story of NOBRAND, a Portuguese company within the footwear industry, whilst serving as pedagogical tool for exploring and reflecting on strategic frameworks. For this purpose, the case-study is written in a way that it may serve as a proper analytical tool for developing the strategic topics of resources and capabilities, the importance of clusters for competitive advantage and modes of internationalization based on strategic alliances. NOBRAND functions as a good example of a company that has worked on its resources and capabilities as a way to establish competitive advantage, whilst also taking advantage of its presence within the Portuguese Footwear cluster. By establishing international collaboration agreements and diversifying on their nature and conditions across different markets, the Portuguese footwear brand managed to expand its brand and products overseas. With a strong international focus, more than 90% of NOBRAND’s production is exported to international markets. Taking into account the resource-based view of the firm, a critical reflection on the most important resources and capabilities of NOBRAND is explored and considerations about the contribution of the synergies of the footwear cluster to NOBRAND’s distinctive resources and capabilities is also taken into account. Finally, there is a reflection on NOBRAND’s international strategic options, which leads to the conclusion that modes of internationalization are very much affected by the resource-commitment that a firm wants to pursue and also on its aversion to risk.
