Abstract:
The usual strategic analysis perceives the external business environment fragmentarily and without a coherent and unifying way. The three levels that a typical analysis of the external business environment involves are a) the macroenvironment and PEST analysis, b) mesoenvironment and “Porter’s diamond”, and c) industrial environment and “Porter’s five forces”. Contrary to the fragmentary analysis of the three levels, this article aims to counter-propose a restructured method of a unified and evolutionary analysis of the external business environment. After presenting the usual analytical handling of the external business environment in the three levels, we suggest that these are rather co-evolving than separate and autonomous spheres of analysis. Therefore, after introducing some elements of the evolutionary socioeconomic theory, we propose a systemic web that perceives the external environment of the socioeconomic organisations in dynamically unified and evolutionary terms. The systemic web conceptualises the approach of the external socioeconomic environment as an open and interactive system comprising three co-evolving spheres in the context of global dynamics: the institutional character of each spatially structured socioeconomic formation; the firm’s functions within the system; and the public-state intervention that contributes to the establishment and reproduction of the system. This conceptual redirection of the methodology of the external business environment can be useful for building an integrated strategic analysis that studies all “micro-meso-macro” components of the entire socioeconomic system.

Abstract:
In this paper authors have presented a case study of HIP Petrohemija company (Pancevo, Serbia) with the aim of generating feasible strategies for technological and economic development. The research philosophy is based on the critical realism, while the research methodology is qualitative. The paper begins with the introduction to the history of HIP Petrohemija, followed by the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, & Threats) analysis, and the SWOT analysis results that were used to construct TOWS (Threats, Opportunities, Weaknesses, & Strengths) matrix. This procedure generated two feasible strategies, both of which are subjected to further tests. The three portfolio models: Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix, General Electric (GE) matrix, and Nine specimen standardized strategies were used to describe the current situation of HIP Petrohemija, needed steps for the company to produce more finalized products, i.e., polymers, as well as the actions aimed at minimizing losses. This however did not provide sufficient data for determining the appropriate strategy for the company. The dilemma was solved with the help of Ansoff matrix, which showed that merging with, in its value chain, the distributor, not with to the supplier will be more profitable for the HIP Petrohemija. Contemporary Porter?s models - Five Forces and Value Chain Analysis, further confirmed the advantage of this strategy. The last model used in this paper is the Competitors Differentiation Iceberg Model that answers what the core competence of HIP Petrohemija is, with the results indicating the high quality of finalized products. Finally, the authors conclude that both strategies that were generated by the analysis are feasible - the merging with the supplier of raw material, as well as the merging with the large distributor of finalized products, with the latter being more profitable in the case of HIP Petrohemija.

Abstract:
One of the areas of industry in Konya which needs to be analyzed regarding effective factors on competition is hotel industry. Accordingly, the current research tries to analyze factors impacting on the industry using Porter's five forces model. According to this model, an industry is affected by five competitive forces and these forces determine the state of competitiveness and profitability of an industry. Porter’s model is based on the insight that a corporate strategy should meet the opportunities and threats in the organizations external environment. Especially, competitive strategy should base on and understanding of industry structures and the way they change. Porter has identified five competitive forces that shape every industry and every market: entry of new investors, threat of substitutes, bargaining power of buyers, bargaining power of suppliers, and rivalry among existing competitors. Porter’s model supports analysis of the driving forces in an industry. Based on the information derived from the Five Forces Analysis, management can decide how to influence or to exploit particular characteristics of their industry. This study aims to analyze the competitiveness at Konya Hotel Industry by using Porter’s Five Forces Model. In this study, questionnaires have been used for data collection. The statistical population of the research consists of managers of hotel business (Senior, middle, executives).

Abstract:
The aim of this diploma thesis is to carry out external and internal analysis of the firm according to selected analytic methods mentioned below. The fractional aim of this thesis is to find out what the preferences of customers are like in present times, when, in order with the needs of the firm, and concurrently with respect to the main aim of this diploma thesis, the research question was defined. On the basis of results of the questionnaire survey, I am able to answer this question. The diploma thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical-methodological part and application part. The theoretical-methodological part is dedicated to the basic concepts of strategic management, and it also represents characteristics of selected methods of strategic analysis and questionnaire survey. In the application part, there are applied theoretical findings, and there is also represented the analysis of external and internal surrounding of the firm. From the analyzes of external surrounding, there were used PEST, the method 4C, analysis of the sector and competitive environment, questionnaire survey and value curve. In order to research the internal environment of the firm, there was used the analysis of internal sources. Results of particular analyzes were summarized in the SWOT analysis, which serves as a background for particular strategic recommendations of the firm. On the basis of the results of the questionnaire survey and value curve, there was established recommendation what direction the optics should take, and how the company should improve the sales of products and services. Other applied methods were the interview and the analysis of documents. Further off, there were applied mathematic-statistic methods, most of all absolute and relative frequency, cross analyzes, median. All collected information and results of the survey were used for processing of the theme of this diploma thesis. I do not have many comments after evaluation of results of the survey and SWOT analysis. But I would still suggest several minor adjustments or changes. Particular recommendation and suggestion of possible changes may contribute to the successful achievement of targets established by the firm, so it would be possible to keep steady clientele, which could be eventually extended. Outputs of the analysis and final recommendation are fully applicable during decision-making carried by the optics management.

Abstract:
In order to build a successful strategy for any type of business, a strategic analysis needs to be performed. A strategic analysis consists of multiple elements, but it always starts with environmental scanning. This research focuses on that very first step by conducting an environmental analysis. It is a strategic tool that identifies all the external and internal elements, which could possibly affect the organization's performance. The aim of this research was not to provide all the final and conclusive answers. It was merely to explore the research topic with varying levels of depth. Additionally, this research tended to tackle new problems on which little or no previous research has been done by combining and elaborating well-known models, such as PESTEL, Porter´s 5 forces, and SWOT. The research problem of this chapter can be described as to determine the possibilities of starting a successful commercial business within the social welfare sector of Portugal.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of industrial games of innovation is often associated with dominant theories representing various generic forms of organizational design and dynamics. The dominant theories in this area were traditionally Schumpeter’s destructive innovation, Porter’s five-force competitive analysis and Nalebuff’s value net. Other frameworks for analyzing industrial behavior include game theory and its derivative innovation games theory. For regulated high-technology industries, theoretical frameworks that do not account for interfirm coordination are often insufficient to understand or predict the industry behavior. Innovation in the aviation simulation and training industry will be presented in this paper as typical of the regulated high-technology industries. The aviation simulation and training industry emerged at the turn of the twentieth century and it was mostly demand-driven at its onset. The increase in the volume and importance of aviation resulted in government regulation of the industry in the late 1960’s. This has radically changed the industry’s game of innovation into a regulation-based coordination game. Literature described the regulation-centered innovation coordination as “an internally-coherent system of innovation.” The new game had the regulatory frameworks at the core of the innovation process as they defined the market’s acceptance and value capturing from innovative technologies. The evolution of these regulatory frameworks was almost entirely reactive to accidents and catastrophic failures that highlighted existing deficiencies in training methodologies or technologies. This ex-ante regulator-driven system of innovation exhibited recent evolutionary changes towards being a pedagogy-centered service-based system of innovation. The reason behind this transformation was a combination of endogenous and exogenous forces. Technological opportunities, economic pressures and strategic transformation by industry leaders were the three main categories of these forces. The resulting mode of innovation coordination in the industry was a service-oriented pedagogical platform, lead by supplier-user partnerships and monitored by regulation authorities. Compliance to equipment regulatory guidelines is not the principal means of value creation anymore. Rather, the pedagogic value of the training curriculum, encompassing the training devices, is the main source of value creation. A new stable equilibrium of innovation coordination is being reached by the industry, driven by its downstream-most service provision component.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper finite element procedures are presented for analyzing the elastic-dynamic behavior of mechanical components fabricated from fiber-reinforced composite materials. An arbitrarily laminated composite plate element is created which allows the analysis of components that are moving in three dimensional space. The five D.O.F. per node static model of S. C. Panda and R. Natarajan is used as a basis for the derivation of the dynamic model. The elemental equations of motion are derived from Hamilton’s Principle. The formulation considers the total kinetic and strain energies of the moving element, together with the work due to bending, caused by the transversely acting external forces, as well as that due to the foreshortening of the element, caused by axially applied loads.

Though urban morphology has typically addressed studies of form in cities, with emphasis on historical cases, diachronic comparative studies are still relatively rare, especially those based on quantitative analysis. As a result, we are still far from laying the ground for a comprehensive understanding of the urban form’s model of change. However, developing such understanding is extremely relevant as the cross-scale interlink between the spatial and social-economic dynamics in cities are increasingly recognized to play a major role in the complex functioning of urban systems and quality of life. We study the urban form of San Pedro de Ate, an informal settlement in Lima, Peru, along its entire cycle of development over the last seventy years. Our study, conducted through a four-months on-site field research, is based on the idea that informal settlements would change according to patterns similar to those of pre-modern cities, though at a much faster pace of growth, yet giving the opportunity to observe the evolution of an urban organism in a limited time span. To do so we first digitalize aerial photographs of five different time periods (from 1944 to 2013), to then conduct a typo-morphological analysis at five scales: a) unit, b) building, c) plot, d) block, and e) settlement (comprehensive of public spaces and street network). We identify and classify patterns of change in the settlement’s urban structure using recognised literature on pre-modern cities, thus supporting our original hypothesis. We then suggest a unitary model of analysis that we name Temporal Settlement Matrix (TSM). Reference List Caniggia, G., & Maffei, G. L. (2008). Lettura dell’edilizia di base (Vol. 215). Full text
Abstract:
In a lead-bismuth alloy (45%Pb-55%Bi) cooled direct contact boiling water fast reactor (PBWFR), steam can be produced by direct contact of feed water with primary Pb-Bi coolant in the upper core plenum, and Pb-Bi coolant can be circulated by buoyancy forces of steam bubbles. As a basic study to investigate the two-phase flow characteristics in the chimneys of PBWFR, a two-dimensional two-phase flow was simulated by injecting argon gas into Pb-Bi pool in a rectangular vessel (400mm in length, 1500mm in height, 50mm in width), and bubble behaviors were investigated experimentally. Bubble sizes, bubble rising velocities and void fractions were measured using void probes. Argon gas was injected through five nozzles of 4mm in diameter into Pb-Bi at two locations. The experimental conditions are the pressure of atmospheric pressure, Pb-Bi temperatures of 443K, and the flow rate of injection Ar gas is 10, 20, and 30 NL/min. The measured bubble rising velocities were distributed in the range from 1 to 3 m/s. The average velocity was about 0.6 m/s. The measured bubble chord lengths were distributed from 1mm up to 30mm. The average chord length was about 7mm. An analysis was performed by two-dimensional and two-fluid model. The experimental results were compared with the analytical results to evaluate the validity of the analytical model. Although large diameter bubbles were observed in the experiment, the drag force model for spherical bubbles performed better for simulation of the experimental result because of high surface tension force of Pb-Bi.

The bearing with a double tilting support is lubricated by spray-bars and can be described by the following specifications: Five pads, 0.23 nominal preload, 60% offset, 56° pad arc angle, 500 mm inner diameter, 350 mm pad length and 1.28 per mill relative bearing clearance. The test rig and the test procedure are described in detail. For the determination of the dynamic coefficients, a harmonic force is induced by two unbalance-vibration generators being attached to the frame of the rig. The relative movement between bearing and shaft is detected by proximity probes between bearing housing and shaft. The bearing forces are identified by measurements of the entire film pressure distribution in both circumferential and axial direction. In the post processing of the data, the dynamic force components are determined by a Fourier-analysis. This procedure is well-established for fixed-pad bearings. However, the uncertainties of its capabilities for tilting-pad bearings are investigated and discussed in this study. The theoretical analyses with the code COMBROS are based on a calculation of linear perturbations for the predicted static properties. The measurement and the calculation procedures show very good agreement for fixed-pad bearings. For a tilting-pad bearing the results differ with increasing frequency ratio and rotational speed. The experimental results show very poor frequency dependence in load direction and a very high one in the orthogonal direction. Theoretically, the influence of the frequency ratio is comparable in both planes and pretty low due to the pivot offset and the high effective preload. While good agreement for the measured and predicted K-C model can be observed at the lower rotational and vibrational frequency the correspondence becomes worse with the increase of both. The identification procedure uses the fluid film force to determine the dynamic coefficients and assumes that this is equal to the load on the bearing in every time step. The results indicate that the experimental identification is uncertain due to the elasticity of the double tilting bearing support and the initiated dynamic effects of it. An improvement of the measurement that also identifies the limitation of the current procedures as well as simplifications in the theoretical analyses are discussed.
