Abstract:
Heroes of portraits of Roman Petruk are open-world creative people – his teachers, parents, of the same age – young artists, actors in whose faces the reality of the Spirit is manifested, the movement of life. The article analyzes Petruk's portraits of his teacher, an outstanding Ukrainian artist and teacher, Nikolai Andreevich Storozhenko and teachers of NAOMA. The ritual value of a portrait is shown, which provides the connection of the worlds - temporary and eternal. The symbolic content of portraits, the value of the conditional background in character characteristics is studied. The relat

The reader must not identify Stephen Dedalus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man with James Joyce in every respect. For instance, Stephen is represented at Clongowes as a timid boy, conscious of his smallness and weakness. Conversely, young Joyce was keen on hurdling and cricket, won cups in sports competitions and earned the nickname “Sunny Jim” due to his cheerful disposition. This paper will trace autobiographical elements in the novel with the purpose to prove that they are meant not as mere recordings of particular autobiographical experiences but as instances of universality. James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man has fascinated readers for more than a century and there are layers of psychological meaning to be found throughout the novel. The novel is the perfect vehicle to discuss the relationship between form language and emotion as Joyce deliberately manipulated the emotional response of the reader through innovations in form and language, departing dramatically from previous literary traditions. This paper attempts to take a fresh look at the novel from a psychological perspective and seeks to examine underlying conditioning processes at work in th

This thesis examines the use of irony in Joyce’s Portrait, claiming that it has the effect of deconstructing common notions of maturity that are engrained within the Bildungsroman tradition, and that this was Joyce’s intention. In Portrait, irony plays the role of psychological reality, undercutting Stephen’s unrealistic expectation to see his life follow a traditional path of teleological progression. This essay proceeds by looking at the novel’s symbolic, thematic and literary cues, as well as through an analysis of its structure, and Stephen’s psychological and behavioral tendencies through

Influenced by post-Lacanian psychoanalytic feminist theory and Judith Butler’s theories of gender performativity, this project examines three fictional brooding male writers from three separate periods of twentieth-century Ireland and Britain and their performances of authenticity, authority, and exceptionalism as artist figures. By tracing a sociohistorical arc and conducting close literary analyses, this project argues that the myth of white male artistic genius is derived from the power and privilege of a cult of individuality that can be used to excuse and justify harmful behaviour and tha

Abstract:
After centuries under British domination, Ireland experienced a strong demand for the restoration and consolidation of its own political and cultural identity in late nineteenth and early twentieth century. James Joyce tried to fulfill the Irish need for identity (re)construction and blended mythology and realism in his works and, by doing so, he made an attempt to provide self-awareness to his people. Abstract:
Initial excursions of 1975/1976 into a genetically critical analysis of the material document transmission of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man are developed in this chapter. At the core stands a recognition of the novel’s structured complexity; that Joyce carefully mid-centred its five chapters on the hell sermons in chapter three to mirror around them chapters one and two leading towards and chapters four and five leading away from that axis. He also shifted accordingly one text segment as earlier drafted from the second to the first chapter, so as to mirror-relate the novel’s frames, chapters one and five.

Abstract:
This chapter deepens the argument that Stephen Dedalus’ Hamlet performance originated during the gestation of Chapter V of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. This opens a suggestion that not integrating a Hamlet movement in A Portrait meant also sacrificing the one single morning-to-evening duration for the novel’s fifth chapter this would have integrally sustained.
