This developed into an interest in creating contemporary iconic images of celebrity personalities. Portraits that exhibit qualities of layered imagery appear as an integrated whole from a distance, but as the observer approaches the canvas, the figure of the portrait disintegrates into atomic elements that stand on their own. It uses the portrait of laughter in theory and in practice to explore a ́non-like ́, iconic relation between a photograph and its model. Abstract:

The nineteenth century's creation of different optical devices such as the camera obscura, the kaleidoscope and the thaumatrope signifies a change in the perception of vision at the time. The aim of this dissertation is to examine the work of four artists with reference to nineteenth century concerns surrounding vision. The scope for this examination is limited to the painted portraiture of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Singer Sargent and photographic portraiture of Julia Margaret Cameron and FÃ©lix Nadar Tournachon.
