Full textThis thesis is in the field of research on foreign language acquisition. It aims to study the acquisition of the expression of hypothesis in two groups of learners: French speakers learning Portuguese, the Brazilian variety, and Portuguese speakers (Brazilians) learning French. Our research focuses in particular on the means of expression most used to express a virtual causal relationship (what we'll call the hypothesis) in L1 and in two different levels of L2. The data are examined from a formal and functional perspective, based on a functionalist method. We are interested in the role of the mother tongue in the acquisition of hypothesis expression in the target language. Oral data were collected from 90 participants, 45 French and 45 Brazilian. For each language, we had a control group, a less advanced group (CEFR B1) and a more advanced group (CEFR C1). A pseudo-longitudinal (oral) corpus was used to record the progressive development of hypothesis expression in L2. The results of the analyses not only facilitate the comparative study of learners at different levels in two different languages, but also their confrontation with learners from other research carried out in different source and target languages. Full textThis dissertation addresses some aspects of the grammar of possessives in Portuguese, both simple forms and de-phrases. It is shown that simple possessives have two homophonous series in Portuguese: prenominal possessives occur in definite contexts (like French and English and unlike Catalan and Italian ones); postnominal possessives occur in non-definite contexts. It is assumed that the former are generated in D, the position in which definiteness is interpreted. This proposal captures the contrasts between the two positions with respect to modification by weak and strong adverbs, coordination and strategies of focus. It is also claimed that the variation observed in Portuguese in the constructions with prenominal possessives - presence of the definite article in European Portuguese (EP) versus its absence in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) - is due, not to differences in the grammar of possessives, but to differences in the determiner system. Since Portuguese displays the same variation in nominal constructions with proper names and generics, it is claimed that they all involve an expletive, i. E. A semantically vacuous definite article, which is phonetically overt in EP and phonetically null in BP. In the 3rd person, Portuguese has two possessive forms: seu and dele. Seu, unlike dele, is an ambiguous form because it is not fully specified for phi-features (gender and number). Data from both spoken and written corpora show that dele is not replacing seu. In EP and BP, the two forms are not equivalent: dele only takes referential antecedents whereas seu may also be bound by non-referential expressions (generics and quantified)

Full textThis dissertation investigates the syntax and the acquisition of the left periphery by Portuguese children (from 1;2. 0 to 4;6. 18). A model of the left periphery is proposed, which relies on the system of feature checking within the minimalist framework and on the proxy category theory of phrase structure by Nash and Rouveret (1997, 2002). The C category splits in the course of the derivation in function of its formal features, in order to create the necessary syntactic space enabling the verification of these features. In the model proposed, the periphery is flexible since its syntaxic form may vary depending on constructions and languages. The Derivational Complexity Hypothesis is used to account for the development pattern of the left periphery, which is observable in the linguistic production data of the children under study. This hypothesis predicts that the less complex constructions emerge earlier; the derivational complexity notion being assessed by a specific and adequate complexity measure, which is defined

Full textOur purpose in this approach is to understand better the "competence performance" of the fishermen who are living in the florianopolis beaches, sc brazil. The analysis is restricted to the stops and liquid consonants and it is supported by the relations between phonetics and phonology. The theoretical basis is founded on the multilinear phonology (encreve, 1988, and others), on the geometry of the phonological features (clements) and on the most recent phonetic approaches. We obtained a "corpus" recorded on the beaches of the florianopolis region. We analyzed phonetically the data, using the computers pc and macintosh. We have as purpose to corroborate that aperture related to other variables affects the variational phenomena. So, it touches most hardly the liquid consonants and its sub-class, the lateral. The variation is explained by the floating of the elements, it means, by the possibility attributed to the speaker of choice in the lexicon of a specific dialect. Full textThe present dissertation is concerned with the use and interpretation of null and pronominal subjects in Brazilian Portuguese. This investigation examines these phenomena in an attempt to disentangle the semantic and discursive factors that can be relevant for choice between these anaphoric expressions in Brazilian Portuguese and the way in which this choice is articulated with the general theory of anaphora resolution. The starting point of this dissertation was the research looking into null and overt subjects from the perspective of Generative Grammar, specially the Parametric Theory. Throughout the present work, however, the analyses proposed in this perspective were shown not to account for the data at stake. The generalization that poor verbal morphology is directly related to the absence or reduced frequency of null subjects, for example, is challenged through experimental data and an investigation of the relative frequency of null subjects across discourse persons in corpora. An alternative explanation presented in the previous literature, namely the importance of the antecedents’ features of Animacy and Specificity, seems to better account for the attested distribution. However, this explanation is not sufficient for understanding the choice between null and overt subjects in Brazilian Portuguese, since the number of animate and specific null subjects is still relatively higher than in languages with obligatory expression of subjects. Therefore, it is argued that discourse factors seem to play a crucial role in the use of null and overt subjects in Brazilian Portuguese. The main factors identified here are Obviousness and Contrast. The first is a standard feature in the literature about anaphora resolution (expressed by a variety of terms, such as Salience, Familiarity, Accessibility, etc.), which is part of the reverse mapping hypothesis according to which the more obvious the subject is, the less explicit the co-referential form is allowed to be. The second factor, Contrast, is the main finding of the present dissertation: as is the case for other levels of linguistic analyses and other phenomena in language, the choice of anaphoric expression in Brazilian Portuguese seems to be driven by efficiency. In the present case, this means that, when the backgrounded information and the asserted (focused) in- formation in an utterance contrast the most, it is more likely that a null subject will be used. The design of a grammar that deals with these multiple features is sketched, specifically, a multi-layered scalar probabilistic grammar is proposed, whose semantic and discourse constraints act in parallel through a probabilistic mapping. It is, thus, shown that null subjects are likely in discursive co- reference, since in these contexts their antecedents are more obvious and the focused information contrasts the most with the background. An apparent counter-example to the proposal sketched here is analyzed: the generic interpretation of null subjects. However, it is shown that the same semantic constraints cross-linguistically applied to other generic constructions can produce generic null subjects in Brazilian Portuguese, given the failure to be grounded predicted by the approach proposed here. Finally, on-line evidence for the analysis of the use and interpretation of null and pronominal subjects is provided. The results found in three eye-tracking while reading experiments provide striking evidence in favor of the proposal put forward here, according to which null and overt subjects and their interpretation can be accounted for in terms of constraints on interpretation rather than licensing

Full textThe research aimed to attain 3 major goals : (1) to investigate Elementary School students' implicit and explicit knowledge about morphological, derivational and flexional dimensions of Portuguese spoken in Brazil, and also, to identify when, at the schooling process, is more evident the use of each of these levels ; 2) to identify relationships between morphology and other dimensions of language (phonological, lexical and syntactic) and also, how these relationships are expressed at different school levels, namely first , third, fifth and seventh grades ; 3) to investigate how implicit and explicit knowledge about Portuguese morphological dimension relate to literacy acquisition (decoding and understanding) and writing (orthography). Participants were 260 students, being 132 boys and 128 girls, who were enrolled at first (22), third (28), fifth (107) and seventh (103) grades of a private school at Sao Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected through 14 tasks that evaluated implicit and explicit knowledge about derivational and flexional morphology, morphological derivational knowledge employed to extract word composition rule, neologism production, writing performance of dictated words, reading performance (decoding) and sentences (understanding) as weIl as vocabulary. Results showed that first grade students have implicit knowledge, or in other words, are sensitive to derivational morphology, more specifically to suffix, that was not verified among more advanced grades students who displayed more explicit knowledge than implicit. It has also been noticed that since 1st grade, knowledge about the use of prefixes and suffixes is employed in the composition of fictitious words. For the two following group of objectives, the expected significant correlations between morphological knowledge and other linguistic dimensions - phonological, syntactical and lexical - are observed since 3rd grade. From this grade on we also verified a growing number of correlations between morphological knowledge and the performance of both reading and writing. In conclusion, we consider that some advances were made into the understanding of the role of implicit and explicit derivational morphological knowledge, and some open questions remain to be answered by future research

Full textWe present an acoustic description of nasal vowels (NV) in Quebec French (QF) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP), languages that possess phonological NV in their inventories. We show that QF and BP NV have different vowel qualities: QF NV are more dispersed than BP’s, smaller contrast (for corresponding NV), and greater amplitude of formantic movement. We also assess discrimination and identification abilities of BP speakers for QF NV. We show that [œ̃] is difficult to perceive because it has no equivalent in Portuguese; variability of [ẽ]’s quality and its important dispersion makes it difficult to discriminate, while its formant movement contributes to its correct identification; [ã] and [ɔ̃] are more easily discriminated, but [ã] is misidentified in a greater proportion because it overlaps several categories, while [ɔ̃] is more easily identified because of its similarities with BP’s [õ].

Full textThe principle aim of this study is to examine some aspects of the prosody of French as a foreign language spoken by students of TLE' who are native Brazilian-Portuguese speakers living in the region of Fortaleza (North-West of Brazil). Moreover, it is claimed that prosody alone, can allow the recognition of non-native French speakers, in other words, is highlighted what I. Fonagy called 'the intonation accent'. This experimental study starts by highlighting the perceptual aspect of this phenomenon: Brazilian'students divided into three groups according to their recognized level of French, are evaluated by a jury of French-speaking and Portuguese-speaking listeners (ail professors of French) in auditory tests based on manipulation allowing eliminating segmental information. Native French, native Brazilian and 'French-Brazilian' utterances (interlingua) were analyzed at the acoustic level, which helped making obvious the prosodic cues allowing the recognition of the 'non- native'. The results allow to confirm the influence of the intonation of the mother tongue (Brazilian) on French sentences uttered by Brazilian students. The comparison was held referring to the analysis of utterances of the same type (same modality and comparable syntactic structures in the two languages) pronounced by both native French and Brazilian speakers, as well as to the prosodic model of the French language given by Philippe Martin ('slope contrast'), model extended to the other Romance languages including Brazilian Portuguese. The prosodic re-synthesis confirmed the results of the acoustic analysis. On the teaching level, this study would help in proposing a new method to improve the realization of prosody by visualization of the intonation curves

Full textPortuguese grammars set as a ternary system of demonstratives, but in the effective use of language we observe a tendency to install a binary system in both European and Brazilian Portuguese. The forms of 1st and 2nd person are neutralized in opposition to the forms of 3rd person, in the paradigm of determinants as well as in the paradigm of pronouns. In this study, we analyze the use of demonstratives and adverbs of place in a corpus of graphic novels of Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese. Our main objective is to verify if there are different forms of coding the dimensions of space and person in these two varieties. This work is aligned with Guillaume's psychosystématique concerning the representation of space and the formal differences in the manner how speakers represent themselves as persons. Our main hypothesis is that possible differences in the use of demonstrative forms reflect different orientation of mental operations adopted by Portuguese and Brazilian speakers. The two varieties represented oral Portuguese have neutralizations compromising the distinction among three referential domains: the 1st person, the 2nd person and the 3rd person. However, this trend appears differently in each variety especially in relation to the determinant demonstratives. While Brazilian Portuguese generalizes the form of second person esse, European Portuguese generalizes the 1st person form este. Furthermore, we show that the referential strengthening through reinforced sequences with adverbials of place, more frequent in Brazilian Portuguese, creates discursive oppositions that go beyond the reconstruction of a ternary division of geographical space

Full textFirst, this crosslinguistic study aimed to investigate graphophonological, grapho-morphological and grapho-syntactical implicit and explicit knowledge development and the contribution of this knowledge to reading in vocalised Arabic and Portuguese mother tongue. Results indicate that Arabic pupils focus on root/pattern morpho-derivational structure, more than on inflected cues, whereas Portuguese pupils show a phonological sensitivity to rime and syllable but also better knowledge about inflexional than derivational morphology. Moreover, whatever mother tongue we studied, morphological knowledge plays a role on written words recognition, when more decontextualized knowledge occurs mainly in Arabic. The grapho-morpho-derivational knowledge contribution in Arabic reading comprehension accentuates the significance of morphology in this written language. Lastly, reading comprehension seems to be more dependent from automatised processes in Portuguese because of its relatively irregular orthography. The second aim of this research was to study the role of reading acquisition in mother tongue (Arabic vs. Portuguese) on learning to read in French as a second language. Comparisons allow to conclude that the special status of morphology in Arabic can conduct learners to pay attention on internal structure of French words in order to read it. In the other hand, similarity between Portuguese and French facilitates the development of graphophonological sensitivity and emphasises the symmetry between first and second language reading words skills. French second language reading comprehension profiles and their development are also very different between Arabic and Portuguese speakers

Full textThe primary focus of this research is to examine Discourse Markers (DMs) in spontaneous spoken interactions. DMs are lexemes or small expressions that underwent pragmaticalization. They do not participate in constructing the meaning, being directed at managing spoken interactions. Proposed DM functions vary greatly depending on goals and analytical methods, with most studies taking the lexicon as a departing point. However, the same DM function can be accomplished through various lexemes. This research takes a different approach. The formal criterion is the prosodic form, which is deemed more stable and revealing regarding the functionalities of DMs. Thus, the objective is to comprehend the factors contributing to expressing DMs' functions and understand how their prosodic form can predict their respective functions. The theoretical framework utilized for this investigation is the Language into Act Theory (L-AcT - Cavalcante, 2020; Cresti, 2000; Moneglia & Raso, 2014). The L-AcT views DMs as a special type of Information Unit (IU), which are conveyed by prosodic units and have distributional constraints. Based on previous studies (Cresti, 2000; Raso, 2014; Raso & Vieira, 2016; Raso & Ferrari, 2020), a reviewed DM framework is proposed: the Allocutive (social cohesion); the Conative (pointing to an illocutionary solution); the Expressive (enacting non-illocutionary surprise); the Highlighter (highlighting); and the Incipit (opening a TU or a turn). Statistical and experimental evidence supporting the proposal is presented. An IU sample containing DM candidates was extracted from the C-ORAL-BRASIL I corpus (Raso & Mello, 2012). The data were categorized into the five proposed classes. 30 prosodic-acoustic descriptors were estimated, including intonational shape, syllable lengthening, and relative intensity. Different classification models were trained and evaluated on a cross-validation set. The best classification model achieved an accuracy score of 78% for these five categories. The more relevant features for distinguishing each class from others are described. The results show that despite the large variability of contexts, speakers, and speaking styles, achieving a reasonable classification through the prosodic form is possible. Additionally, an experiment evaluated participants' ability to recognize DM classes occurring in the initial position based on prosodic cues. 25 utterances containing three different DM functions (ALL, CNT, and INP) and seven different lexemes were selected. A trained speaker reproduced instances in a sound-processed room, and the original DMs were manipulated to match the prototypical forms of all functional targets. The stimuli were presented to 120 participants, whose task was to identify the function. Results show that all controlled factors were relevant: the original context, the prosodic form, and the lexicon. However, the prosodic form is less variable and less submitted to the sentence's interpretation to cue functionality
O foco principal desta pesquisa é examinar Marcadores de Discurso (MDs) em interações de fala espontânea. DMs são lexemas ou expressões que passaram por pragmaticalização. Eles não participam da construção do significado, sendo direcionados ao gerenciamento das interações faladas. As funções propostas variam muito dependendo dos objetivos e do método analítico, e a maioria dos estudos toma o léxico como ponto de partida. Contudo, uma mesma função pode ser realizada através de vários lexemas. Esta pesquisa adota uma abordagem diferente. O critério formal é a forma prosódica, considerada mais estável e reveladora no que diz respeito às funcionalidades dos DMs. O objetivo é compreender os fatores que contribuem para a veiculação dos DMs e como a forma prosódica pode ser utilizada para prever as respectivas funções. O referencial teórico utilizado é a Language into Act (L-AcT – Cavalcante, 2020; Cresti, 2000; Moneglia & Raso, 2014). A L-AcT vê os DMs como um tipo especial de Unidade Informacional (UI), que é veiculada por unidades prosódicas e possui restrições distribucionais. Com base em estudos anteriores (Cresti, 2000; Raso, 2014; Raso & Vieira, 2016; Raso & Ferrari, 2020), propõe-se um quadro de MDs revisto: o Alocutivo (coesão social); o Conativo (apontando para uma solução ilocucionária); o Expressivo (representando surpresa não ilocucionária); o Marcador (destaque); e o Incipitário (abrir uma TU ou um turno). São apresentadas evidências estatísticas e experimentais que apoiam a proposta. Uma amostra de UIs contendo candidatos a DM foi extraída do C-ORAL-BRASIL I (Raso & Mello, 2012). Os dados foram categorizados nas cinco classes propostas. Foram estimados 30 descritores prosódico-acústicos, incluindo forma entoacional, alongamento silábico e intensidade relativa. Diferentes modelos de classificação foram treinados e avaliados em validação cruzada. O melhor modelo de classificação obteve uma acurácia de 78%. Os resultados mostram que, apesar da grande variabilidade de contextos, falantes e estilos de elocução, é possível conseguir uma classificação razoável por meio da forma prosódica. Além disso, foi realizado um experimento para avaliar a capacidade dos participantes de reconhecer classes de DM que ocorrem na posição inicial com base apenas em pistas prosódicas. Foram selecionados 25 enunciados contendo três funções diferentes (ALL, CNT e INP) e sete lexemas diferentes. As instâncias foram registradas em um ambiente controlado e os originais foram manipulados para corresponder às formas prototípicas de outros DMs alvo. Os estímulos foram apresentados a 120 participantes. Os resultados mostram que todos os fatores controlados desempenham um papel relevante: o contexto original, a forma prosódica e o léxico. No entanto, apenas a forma prosódica é menos variável

Full textThis dissertation provides insight into the complex process of how the Portuguese language, as practised within the "Portuguese community" in Montreal, is evolving and how it is changing the group's identity (re)presentations. This community, created from the migration process that began in the 1950s, is an example of linguistic integration in the particular context of Montreal where French and English dominate the linguistic landscape. The findings indicate the dynamic of the Portuguese language within the group and the evolution of the practice through the analysis of seven "weak points" in the language's structure that are consequences of its contact with the two dominant languages. In addition, based on epilinguistic discourse analysis, the research shows how the Portuguese language and its representations may help in understanding the complex process of defining the group's identity through language practises
Esta tese aborda a evolução da língua portuguesa em contexto da diáspora, e em particular a influência das práticas linguísticas nas (re)presentações identitárias da "comunidade portuguesa" de Montreal. Através duma pesquisa sociolinguística sobre as mudanças da língua em situação de contacto com outras línguas, a nossa análise linguística identificou sete "elementos de fragilidade" da estrutura da língua, através do processo de erosão da língua falada dentro do grupo, sublinhando as particularidades do contexto de contacto entre línguas. Em segundo lugar, procedemos a uma análise do discurso epilinguístico, tendo observado diferentes discursos sobre as representações da língua e das suas práticas dentro do grupo, sublinhando estas últimas enquanto marcadores fundamentais da identidade da comunidade em estudo
Questa tesi nasce dallo studio del processo evolutivo della pratica orale della lingua portoghese all'interno della "comunità portoghese" di Montreal, e in particolare del come le pratiche della lingua possano influenzare le (rap)presentazioni identitarie dei membri del gruppo nelle diverse generazioni. All'interno di una comunità minoritaria, in un contesto particolare come quello della città del Québec, dove due lingue, il francese e l'inglese, dominano il panorama linguistico, la nostra ricerca sociolinguistica ci ha permesso di osservare il percorso d'erosione del portoghese all'interno della comunità, attraverso il distaccamento di sette "punti di fragilità" della struttura della lingua portoghese, conseguenza della situazione di contatto tra le lingue. L'analisi si propone, inoltre, d'illustrare il ruolo fondamentale della lingua nel processo identitario attraverso le sue pratiche, in quanto strumento di preservazione dell'eredità culturale e linguistica propria del gruppo. In quest'ottica, la lingua è vista come una manifestazione d'identità e d'appartenenza al gruppo
Esta tesis aborda la temática de la evolución de la lengua portuguesa en un contexto de la migración y en particular la influencia de las prácticas lingüísticas en lo que se refiere a las (re)presentaciones identitarias. Dentro de un contexto particular como el de la "comunidad portuguesa" de Montreal, en un contexto urbano dominado por dos idiomas, el francés y el inglés, nuestro estudio se concentra sobre el análisis lingüístico de siete "elementos de fragilidad" de la estructura de la lengua portuguesa hablada dentro la comunidad por sus miembros como consecuencia de la situación de contacto. Por otra parte, considerando esta visión de erosión de la lengua portuguesa, gracias al análisis del discurso epilingüístico que fue realizado, podemos ilustrar varios discursos que se crean sobre las diferentes definiciones del idioma y de sus prácticas, en particular con respecto a la práctica de la lengua como marca fundamental de la identidad del grupo

Full textIn this research, I will question a concept halfway between knowledge and action, interculturality in field oflanguage sciences and more specifically in educational and linguistic policies, within the context ofinternational cooperation between France and Brazil. Which intercultural skills are French and Braziliancooperating partners lacking of in international cooperation? To what extent is the intercultural dimensiontaken into account in language education policies in France, in Brazil and at an international level? Whatrecommendations for language education policies, both in terms of initial training and continuing education,are conceivable to train cooperating partners? These are the questions that this doctoral dissertation will tryto answer through an analysis of interculturality in French and Brazilian language education policies. Thequalitative approach of my analysis is based on a corpus of semi-directive interviews and observations on asynchronic, macro and micro levels. This highlights the multiplicity of challenges and the different dynamicsat work within the question of interculturality in language education policies, and into the didactics oflanguage and culture. This research deals with the cultural and linguistic dimensions of the cooperationbetween France and Brazil through the prism of the language and culture substratum. It’s from this linguisticand cultural substrate, which carries the linguistic exchanges of the cooperating partners that we will askourselves how the international cooperation between France and Brazil are sources of intercultural relations.These relations are a prerequisite and necessary to a successful partnership. We will also measure theintegrity of adaptable antagonisms as a source of construction of intercultural skills in situations experiencesby international cooperation professionals. This work fits within a perspective of continuous professionaldevelopment, taking into account the intercultural dimension in language education policies, with theobjective to train professionals in international cooperation between France and Brazil at initial andcontinuing education levels

Full textThis paper analyzes the place of Júlio Ribeiro in the history of linguistic ideas in Brazil. Situated in the field of History of Linguistic Ideas, we try to understand how the image of Júlio Ribeiro is constructed as a founding author in the history of Portuguese studies in Brazil in three instances: 1) in the research carried out in the axis of the project History of Linguistic Ideas in Brazil and in the dissertations and theses that in recent years have taken the author as object of study; 2) in his own work; 3) in the work of subsequent authors until the establishment of the Brazilian Grammatical Norm in 1959. With this, we show how Júlio Ribeiro himself is represented in a Brazilian history of reflection on language and how he is incorporated or erased in the horizon of retrospection of Brazilian grammatization. The analysis of the whole Júlio Ribeiro's work allowed us not only to map his first positions on the study of languages and language; but also to publicize and analyze in detail works of the author unique in their genre in their time and until now completely forgotten – two of them are: Traços Geraes de Linguistica, the first book of linguistics produced in Brazil, and Holmes Brazileiro ou Grammatica da Puericia, one of the rare examples of grammar directed to childhood in nineteenth-century Brazil. Besides, we have been able to verify how Júlio Ribeiro composes his texts with the use of third-party works in translation and adaptation procedures, and with the reuse of his own writings; as well as how the author countered the accusations of plagiarism aroused by these methods of composition of their texts and in reaction to their theoretical but also political positions. Deepening the knowledge about the linguistic ideas circulating in Brazil at the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century, our work seeks not only to throw a new look at Júlio Ribeiro's work as a grammarian who adopts historical and comparative grammar, pointing to unorthodox interpretations; but also to draw attention to the existence of an important grammatical movement in Maranhão to be considered beyond the Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo axis, for the analysis of the controversy between Júlio Ribeiro and Augusto Freire da Silva (from Maranhão), showing that the general grammar was also a model of scientificity in the Brazilian grammatization process of Portuguese. Furthermore, we argue that, besides being a grammarian, Júlio Ribeiro can also be taken as an author of linguistics, who takes up and innovates the questions of historical grammar, and also as a historian of the language sciences, who presents particular interpretations of the history of Linguistics, inserting the Portuguese language and the Brazilian indigenous languages in the general questions of the scientific knowledge on language in the 19th century. In the end, we could conclude that there is a contradiction between a double erasure of Júlio Ribeiro as a reference for performing grammatical and linguistic analyses and also most of his works in the horizon of retrospection of Brazilian grammatization and a historical discourse, supported by a reduced number of authors of the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, which puts Júlio Ribeiro at all times in the first place in the history of grammatical and linguistic studies in Brazil
O presente trabalho analisa o lugar de Júlio Ribeiro na história das ideias linguísticas no Brasil. Situados no campo da História das Ideias Linguísticas, procuramos compreender como se constrói a imagem de Júlio Ribeiro como um autor fundador na história dos estudos sobre o português no Brasil em três instâncias: 1) nas pesquisas realizadas no eixo do projeto História das Ideias Linguísticas no Brasil e nas dissertações e teses que nos últimos anos, a partir dessas pesquisas, têm tomado o autor como objeto de estudo; 2) na sua própria obra; 3) na obra de autores posteriores a ele até a instauração da Norma Gramatical Brasileira em 1959. Com isso, mostramos como o próprio Júlio Ribeiro se representa numa história brasileira de reflexão sobre a linguagem e como ele é incorporado ou apagado no horizonte de retrospecção da gramatização brasileira. A análise do conjunto da obra de Júlio Ribeiro nos permitiu mapear as suas primeiras posições sobre o estudo das línguas e da linguagem e dar publicidade e analisar em detalhes obras do autor únicas no seu gênero em sua época e até agora completamente esquecidas, caso dos Traços Geraes de Linguistica, o primeiro livro de linguística produzido no Brasil, e a Holmes Brazileiro ou Grammatica da Puericia, um dos raros exemplares de gramática voltada para a infância no Brasil do século XIX. Além disso, pudemos verificar o modo como Júlio Ribeiro compõe os seus textos com a utilização de obras de terceiros em procedimentos de tradução e adaptação e com a reutilização dos seus próprios escritos, bem como o modo como o autor rebateu as acusações de plágio despertadas por esses métodos de composição de seus textos e em reação a seus posicionamentos teóricos mas também políticos. Aprofundando o conhecimento sobre as ideias linguísticas em circulação no Brasil na virada do século XIX para o século XX, nosso trabalho busca lançar um novo olhar sobre o próprio trabalho de Júlio Ribeiro como um gramático que adota a gramática histórica e comparada, apontando interpretações não ortodoxas quanto ao objeto central do comparatismo, a mudança linguística, e chamar a atenção para a existência de todo um movimento gramatical importante no Maranhão a ser considerado além do eixo Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo, pela análise da polêmica entre Júlio Ribeiro e o maranhense Augusto Freire da Silva, mostrando que a gramática geral também foi modelo de cientificidade na gramatização brasileira do português. Além disso, defendemos que, para além de gramático, Júlio Ribeiro pode ser tomado também como um autor de linguística, que retoma e inova as questões da gramática histórica, e também como um historiador das ciências da linguagem, que apresenta interpretações particulares da história da linguística, inserindo a língua portuguesa e as línguas indígenas brasileiras nas questões gerais do conhecimento científico sobre a linguagem no século XIX. No fim das contas, pudemos concluir haver uma contradição entre um duplo apagamento de Júlio Ribeiro como referência para a realização de análises gramaticais e linguísticas e também da maior parte de suas obras no horizonte de retrospecção da gramatização brasileira e um discurso histórico, sustentado por um número reduzido de autores de finais do século XIX e primeira metade do século XX, que o coloca a cada instante em primeiro lugar na história dos estudos gramaticais e linguísticos no Brasil
