Full textPossessives invalidate the opposition between Western (Spanish and Portuguese) and Eastern (Catalan) Ibero-Romance languages. Nowadays, in Catalan and European Portuguese, in the pre-nominal position, possessives are mainly preceded by the article (o meu amigo, el meu amic), while in standard Spanish, they are constructed without an article (mi amigo). In the Middle Ages, possessives may allow the article or not and the two systems alternate in the different linguistic areas of the Peninsula. This thesis sheds light on the evolution of the alternation between [article + possessive + noun] and [possessive + noun] in Catalan, Spanish and European Portuguese from the 13th to the 20th century. More specifically, this work addresses the question of the motivation of the variation by morphosyntactic, semantic or pragmatic factors. This research is carried out using the idiolectal method proposed by Barra Jover (2015), according to which variation must be analysed within productions to be considered separately and the relevant hypotheses must be tested against all the data of a text and each individual text, in order to check their solidity or to falsify them. The large chronological scope of the corpus and the substantial dataset, due in particular to the large number of examples examined per text, together with the detailed manual analysis of each occurrence of the possessive, and a systematic comparison with other languages, allow this thesis to combine precise analysis with a broad overview of the phenomenon.Ultimately, this thesis aims at contributing to a better understanding of the process by which a variation phenomenon may or may not lead to linguistic fragmentation

Full textPortuguese grammars set as a ternary system of demonstratives, but in the effective use of language we observe a tendency to install a binary system in both European and Brazilian Portuguese. The forms of 1st and 2nd person are neutralized in opposition to the forms of 3rd person, in the paradigm of determinants as well as in the paradigm of pronouns. In this study, we analyze the use of demonstratives and adverbs of place in a corpus of graphic novels of Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese. Our main objective is to verify if there are different forms of coding the dimensions of space and person in these two varieties. This work is aligned with Guillaume's psychosystématique concerning the representation of space and the formal differences in the manner how speakers represent themselves as persons. Our main hypothesis is that possible differences in the use of demonstrative forms reflect different orientation of mental operations adopted by Portuguese and Brazilian speakers. The two varieties represented oral Portuguese have neutralizations compromising the distinction among three referential domains: the 1st person, the 2nd person and the 3rd person. However, this trend appears differently in each variety especially in relation to the determinant demonstratives. While Brazilian Portuguese generalizes the form of second person esse, European Portuguese generalizes the 1st person form este. Furthermore, we show that the referential strengthening through reinforced sequences with adverbials of place, more frequent in Brazilian Portuguese, creates discursive oppositions that go beyond the reconstruction of a ternary division of geographical space

Full textThe study investigates the history of the word-class of participle through a close study of a corpus of French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian grammars which were published between the 15th and 18th centuries. The comparative approach is based on the methodological principle of “series of texts”, by grouping and collating a hundred works according to several variable parameters: the chronology, the theme or the grammatical tradition of the language in question. The first part of the study deals with the linguistic categorization and questions the nature of the non-finite verbal forms, especially the participle and its use in an analytical verbal form. The second part deals with the history of the participle from a more general point of view. Thus, after an overview of the problematic aspects of Greek and Latin grammarians, the analysis focuses on the treatment of the word-class in the grammars of the Romance languages. The third part focuses on the approaches and concepts used by the Renaissance grammarians to deal with compound tenses and on how they described and (re)-categorized the participle forms of these verbal tenses

Full textAlthough the verbal systels of french and slavic languages are structured quite differently, they are both based on the category of aspect. A comparison of the verbal systems of the ukrainian and russian with that of french is both possible and necessary, especially within a teaching perspective. Such a comparison must however be founded on the general theoretical principles provided by grammatical metalanguage. Aspectual values - i. E. The non-complete, perfect and aoristic - provide us with netalinguistic notions which coer be used to describe french, ukrainian and russian. In french, the grammatical category of aspect manifests itself in the opposition between simple and compound verbal forms. In slavic languages, on the other hand, aspect constitutes a lexicogrammatical category. The opposition between perfective and imperfective aspect is also an opposition between two distinct verbs

Full textOur study aims at singling out some major principles underlying the functioning of the nominal and verbal systems of ibibio, english and french, with a view to contributing to scholarship in the area of foreign language teaching, and elaborating general language theories. For this purpose, our study is carried out within the framework of the metaoperational theory put forward by professor henri adamczewski. In the first chapter, we present the ibibio language; its sociolinguistic context, its speakers, its phonology and its morphosyntax, and we lay emphasis on features that distinguish it from english and french. The second chapter deals with the nominal group, particularly with the formation of nouns and with their actual use in discourse by means of determinants (keet, mfn, ami, ako, and ado) and quantifiers (mme, afit, uwak, and ubaak). Similar operations in english and french are also examined. The pronoun is also examined in this chapter and differences between the languages in this domain pointed out. The third chapter considers the verbal group. The elements of this group team up with the verb to a predicative relation. In this sphere, ibibio distinguishes itself from english and french by the fact that some of tis predicative elements are tonal in nature. In conclusion, it would appear that a better understanding of the functioning of ibibio is a requirement for the effective learning of french and other languages by speakers of ibibio

Full textThe analysis of the negation, adverbs and floating quantifiers showed that brazilian portuguese makes use of the process named verbal raising in order to form a inflected verb. The hypothesis that negation denies the verbal phrase can justify the existence of the phenomenon named negative polarity in this language. The trace in subject position is head-governed by i when the verb is moved and the condition named super-relativized minimality can create a barrier for extraction. The hypothesis that adjunction to ip is possible in brazilian portuguese explains well formed wh violations. Fanally, a empty object can be licentiate by pronominal features associated to the head d of his antecedent

Full textThis thesis is a metaoperational approach to tense, aspect and modality in arabic and english through an application of the theory of phases to english and arabic verbal systems concerning these issues. The first chapter introduces both the language and the model of analysis of the arabic verbal system. Then a comparison with english is conducted in the third chapter. The fourth chapter deals with english and arabic utterances with an auxiliary component. The final chapter concerns modalization : a contrastive analysis of some english and arabic modal operators. The aim of the metaoperational grammar is to bring to light the systematic workinf og particular tonguesand the universals of human language
