Full textFrom a dialectological point of view, few studies have been carried out on Angolan Portuguese. Publications exist on aspects of the lexicon, or authors' writing styles, and remarks are made on this language in diverse researches. We propose a broad study of Angola's Portuguese language which approaches the phonology, the lexicon and the syntax, while considering existing researches and various written texts as well as verbal recordings of Angolans. There are no standard rules for Angolan Portuguese. Basically, the European Portuguese rules serve as reference for Angolans. However, despite a real diversified and individual means of appropriation of Portuguese language by Angolans, certain characteristics make it possible to recognize the Angolan origin of a speaker or a text ; This reality permits to raise the question of a third future rule for this language in this country, as Angola is, a country (apart from Brazil and Portugal) where Portuguese is mostly established despite the fact that it's the country's official and first language. The Bantu languages of the substrate are the principal elements of the Angolan ecosystem and they have exerted their influence on the adaptation of Portuguese language in Angola. Amongst these Bantu languages, Kimbundu plays the strongest role, besides, historically, it appears to have had the most frequent contacts with Portuguese language, and the effects are present in Portuguese of Portugal and Portuguese of Brazil. The principal hypothesis for interpreting the observed linguistic specificity of Angolan Portuguese, is the superposition of two systems : the system of European Portuguese and the Bantu languages' system

Full textThis dissertation addresses some aspects of the grammar of possessives in Portuguese, both simple forms and de-phrases. It is shown that simple possessives have two homophonous series in Portuguese: prenominal possessives occur in definite contexts (like French and English and unlike Catalan and Italian ones); postnominal possessives occur in non-definite contexts. It is assumed that the former are generated in D, the position in which definiteness is interpreted. This proposal captures the contrasts between the two positions with respect to modification by weak and strong adverbs, coordination and strategies of focus. It is also claimed that the variation observed in Portuguese in the constructions with prenominal possessives - presence of the definite article in European Portuguese (EP) versus its absence in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) - is due, not to differences in the grammar of possessives, but to differences in the determiner system. Since Portuguese displays the same variation in nominal constructions with proper names and generics, it is claimed that they all involve an expletive, i. E. A semantically vacuous definite article, which is phonetically overt in EP and phonetically null in BP. In the 3rd person, Portuguese has two possessive forms: seu and dele. Seu, unlike dele, is an ambiguous form because it is not fully specified for phi-features (gender and number). Data from both spoken and written corpora show that dele is not replacing seu. In EP and BP, the two forms are not equivalent: dele only takes referential antecedents whereas seu may also be bound by non-referential expressions (generics and quantified)

Full textThe main objective of this thesis is to understand the phenomenon of loanwords and their phonological adaptations. The research was based on consulting the Brazilian newspaper of the nineteenth century 'A Gazetinha', whose use of French words is common. Thus, we start with a written corpus, which makes us think about the role of orthography in loanword adaptations. After our research in the literature about loanwords, we focused on two aspects: the phonological adaptation of French words in Portuguese and the link between etymology and loanwords. This work contributes to the description of the Portuguese lexicon and its phonology from the process of adaptation of French loans. In addition, we contribute to the description of Portuguese vocabulary from their etymological dictionaries and monolingual. Our assumptions are that the orthography and knowledge of French play a role in the adaptation process; Portuguese and Brazilian speakers may show differences to adapt the French words; European and Brazilian vocabulary may show differences related with words of French origin. Our methodology for assessing the phonological adaptation involves the application of a test based on the article The influence of orthography on loanwords adaptations of Vendelin & Peperkamp (2006). The test has been adapted to our subject and applied to Brazilian and Portuguese speakers to compare the results. We analyze six French phonemes in this work. The test results on phonological adaptations show that there is no difference in choice of adaptation between European and Brazilian speakers at the phonological level. Adaptations are always to the target language, Portuguese. However, orthography and knowledge of French appear to be related and active factors in the process when the speaker is needed. The subtle differences in adaptation are only on the phonetic level, obeying the phenomena of Portuguese.Concerning the second aspect studied- the relation between etymology and loanwords-, we use as a research method the consultation of etymological and monolingual dictionaries of Portuguese to establish a framework for discussion comparing their information about the origins of words. After a data analysis, we verify that the information is quite contrasting, which prevents easy reading to any reader, not just to linguists. Our conclusion is that dictionaries are not a source of research with compelling information and other studies and discussions are still needed

Full textNotre étude porte sur le recours au plurilinguisme littéraire. Nous désirons comprendre pourquoi et comment les écrivains insèrent « l´étranger » dans leurs textes et nous nous demandons comment le plurilinguisme exprime, à travers le choix des langues, un questionnement sur l´identité et l´altérité. Notre point d’ancrage est la Révolution de 1974 et nous cherchons à savoir à quel point le contexte politique et social a pu conditionner les oeuvres littéraires notre corpus. Les écrivains exilés ou ayant participé de près ou de loin à la guerre coloniale, sont, dans la plupart des cas, des écrivains plurilingues. Nous avons donc décidé d’analyser des thématiques contemporaines à la dictature c´est-à-dire l´exil, l´émigration et la guerre coloniale. De cette façon, nous appréhendons la question de la vraisemblance et de « l’effet de réel ». Dans la première partie de notre étude, nous nous penchons sur le plurilinguisme dans la société et le texte littéraire et nous problématisons la notion même de plurilinguisme littéraire. Dans notre deuxième partie, nous analysons les principales caractéristiques structurelles et thématiques des romans plurilingues du corpus. Nous prenons en compte le contexte historique et social, la présence de différents éléments autobiographiques et les liens qui existent entre Histoire et mémoire. La troisième partie comprend l´analyse linguistique et énonciative de différentes occurrences plurilingues du corpus. Nous étudions des emprunts et des interférences dans les discours des narrateurs et nous analysons des dialogues bilingues des personnages. Nous abordons également la question de la plurivocalité au sein du plurilinguisme. Notre étude cherche ainsi à comprendre comment la littérature est tributaire et bénéficiaire de la pluralité des langues

Full textThe main concern of this research work has been to show how primary schoolchildren of portuguese descent cope with both portugese and french in their everyday life where sharing between family and school consists of a double experience. Living in a bicultural or pluricultural environment, on the condition that the intermixting of languages and cultures is accepted, is certainly for the child, more positive than negative. The learning of the portuguese language and culture by the children of immigrants, despite the overloaded school hours, enables them to get to know their roots, to understand better the rest of the family left behind, to be in a better position to choose the country, be it france or portugal, they want to settle down in. We shall say that this fact creates a new dimension inside them : the discovery of a country where they may not be born (because the majority of them are born in france) but where they have a sense of belonging. The better they will know the french and the portuguese cultures the better they will be able to act freely in their solidarity with the two communities without having the feeling of guilt of their co-belonging

Full textWithin the domain of modality and interlocution - conceived both at the level of the potentialities of language (that of the virtual means of verbal communication) and at the discursive level (that of the variation of individual realizations) - this study concerns "verbal proxemics". The problem is stated in the following way: which verbal means do subjects speakers of a language have at their disposal in order to regulate their interlocutive distance, when they proceed to verbal exchanges? How are these linguistic means being implemented in the variability of discursive solutions? Faced with the variety of these means, delimitation of a certain number amongst them is required. Have been chosen: address forms, "interlocutive expressions" (see "modal particles", "discursive particles", "enonciative particles", etc. ) and linguistic manifestations of politeness, in Portuguese. These three types of means, particularly well qualified for the regulation of interlocutive distance are delimited from different viewpoints (see "bilans d'études" ("assessments of studies") and a semantico-pragmatic delimitation based on a continuous vision of semantic phenomena (see B. Pottier's theory) is proposed (1st part). The modal realm to which these means belong leads to a reflection on the ways to access the study of the linguistic expression of modality, from a point of view of interlocution (2nd part). A certain number of discursive solutions which put to the test the results of our study (1st and 2nd parts) are then being analyzed (3rd part). This research follows, indeed, a movement to and fro between discursive realizations, language potentialities and conceptual possibilities, and aims to reconcile the point of view of linguistics "of the conversational field" and that of theoretical linguistics

Full textThis dissertation aims at describing and explaining the Portuguese verbal system, which is a system of sayable representations of time consisting of n potential significates, all distinct from one another, which alternate in a closed circuit. The explicandum – the facts to be explained – is, in this case, the paradigms of the conjugation, the overall inventory of its word-signs in detail (stems, inflexions and the like), as they manifest themselves in speech and writing, as well as the diverse senses expressed by these word-signs in discourse. The explicans – the explanatory fact – is, in this particular case, the operative system, the psychomechanism that brings the significates of these forms together in a coherent whole through the interplay of their related senses to express their full purport, which in fact does form a coherent whole only because of the operation that assembles them. The point is that the system cannot be discovered, reconstituted, and hence explained, until one understands its modus operandi, its constructive psychomechanism. In the case of the verb system, the constructive psychomechanism is the one called chronogenesis. It gives rise to a set of verbal categories all of which are temporal, except cardinal person (a spatial category) actualized to give the subject’s rank (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and its degree of control over the accomplishment of the event, thus providing a spatial support for the event signified by the verb. Aspect, mood, tense, as well as person and « voice » (or better, diathesis) do not refer, as it is widely taught or suggested, to disparate phenomena interconnected only in a desultory fashion but rather to different phases of a single psychosystem whose operation is beyond the conscious control of speakers: chronogenesis
Esta tese visa descrever e explicar o sistema verbal português, que é um sistema de representação dizível do tempo através de n significados potenciais, todos diferentes uns dos outros, que alternam em circuito fechado. O explicandum – os factos a explicar – são, neste particular, os paradigmas de conjugação do verbo, o inventário das suas formas semioplásticas examinadas em pormenor (radicais, índices temáticos, afixos, desinências), tal como se manifestam na fala e na escrita, e, de maneira complementar, os diversos sentidos que as ditas formas expressam no discurso. O explicans – o facto explicador – é, neste particular, o sistema operativo, o psicomecanismo que agrupa os significados dessas formas e que faz da sua reunião um todo coerente onde se totaliza o jogo complexo da sua relação recíproca, e que só forma aliás um todo coerente graças a esse efeito de totalização. Há que ter em consideração que o sistema só pode ser descoberto, reconstituído, e por conseguinte explicado, quando se compreende claramente o seu modus operandi, o seu psicomecanismo criador. No caso do sistema verbal, o psicomecanismo criador recebeu o nome, bem apropriado, de cronogénese. Daí, um conjunto de categorias verbais que são todas de ordem temporal, excepto a de pessoa cardinal (uma categoria espacial). Não obstante, a pessoa cardinal desempenha um importantíssimo papel na cronogénese, em virtude da intitulação variável de escalão e de dinamia que recebe para cumprir a preceito a sua função de sujeito (/suporte espacial) do acontecimento representado pelo verbo. Aspecto, modo, « tempo » (mais precisamente, temporama), assim como pessoa e « voz » (melhor dizendo, diátese), não se referem, como tem sido frequentemente ensinado ou sugerido, a fenómenos avulsos ou, no melhor dos casos, frouxamente interligados, mas às fases internas de um único psicossistema cuja operatividade escapa ao controlo da consciência dos enunciadores: a cronogénese

Full textPerceptual epenthesis is the illusory perception of a vowel absent of the speech stream. In this work, we study this phenomenon with speakers from Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese and Japanese. Our main purpose is to collect evidence of this phenomenon with speakers of each of the preceding languages. We then refine our analysis distinguishing between monolingual and bilingual subjects of Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese. We show that Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese speakers exhibit perceptual epenthesis whereas European Portuguese speakers do not. These results allow us to conclude that perceptual epenthesis is a phonetically based phenomenon that is not the result of orthographic, lexical or grammatical properties of the language. Moreover, as regards plasticity issues, the study of bilingual subjects show that the language used most often influences the choice of the epenthtic vowel more than the maternal tongue

Full textFirst, this crosslinguistic study aimed to investigate graphophonological, grapho-morphological and grapho-syntactical implicit and explicit knowledge development and the contribution of this knowledge to reading in vocalised Arabic and Portuguese mother tongue. Results indicate that Arabic pupils focus on root/pattern morpho-derivational structure, more than on inflected cues, whereas Portuguese pupils show a phonological sensitivity to rime and syllable but also better knowledge about inflexional than derivational morphology. Moreover, whatever mother tongue we studied, morphological knowledge plays a role on written words recognition, when more decontextualized knowledge occurs mainly in Arabic. The grapho-morpho-derivational knowledge contribution in Arabic reading comprehension accentuates the significance of morphology in this written language. Lastly, reading comprehension seems to be more dependent from automatised processes in Portuguese because of its relatively irregular orthography. The second aim of this research was to study the role of reading acquisition in mother tongue (Arabic vs. Portuguese) on learning to read in French as a second language. Comparisons allow to conclude that the special status of morphology in Arabic can conduct learners to pay attention on internal structure of French words in order to read it. In the other hand, similarity between Portuguese and French facilitates the development of graphophonological sensitivity and emphasises the symmetry between first and second language reading words skills. French second language reading comprehension profiles and their development are also very different between Arabic and Portuguese speakers

The cv syllable and the paroxyton stress are the most syllabic and accentual canonical types. We tried to establish the cognitive relevance of these canonical structures during the utilization of written language by brazilian children of 7 to 15 years old. These canonical structures also explain spelling variations observed during writing free texts and dictations. Full textThe goal of our search consists in analysing the metaphor in the speciality language which still constitute a reflexion theme not very well clarified. In this perspective, the analysis of the metaphor in the cardiology language represents a real ambitious adventure, as it is a will to demostrate that it is not only a simple way to talk, but also a key element of our thought and world experience. One of the major point of this work is to bring a reflexion and a contribution to nature and to the various functions hold by the metaphor in the medical terminology. To do it, we have presented a possible data basis model which throw light on the elucidation of certain questions reguarding the terminological metaphor. Thus, for us, there is no doubt that in the scientific activity, the metaphor is a need, a precious tool, but endowed with characteristical operating instructions. Yet, for a long time this vision of the metaphor was not in favour, as it contrasted with the Wusterian tradition wich had considered the metaphor as a non rational entity aiming at vague representations said to be not only subjectives but also devoid of any scientific rigour, and carrier of ambiguity. Our position is different. The metaphor is a path often followed by scientists who can appreciate its ability to produce knowledge and to denominate. We have also seen that the terminological metaphor has an undeniable walk-on part in the specialized communication, a fact that had been refutated for a long time. The terminological metaphor in the cardiology field carries out five functions : cognitive, heuristic, denominative, metalinguistic, didactic. Finally we will end with the idea of the metaphor presenting itself as a linguistic key with cognitive conceptualization amoung sciences field

Full textA contrastive analysis at the lexical level of the french and portuguese languages that takes a corpus as a starting point in order to detect the elements of divergence and similarity between the two systems. A first theoretical volume presents the objective and methodology of the research and points out the epistemological and historical aspects considered important to the comprehension of the problem. The contrastive lexical analysis itself comprises two phases - the comparison at the level of expression and the comparison at the level of meaning. Thus resulting a contrastive typology that serves as a basic material to the teaching of french vocabulary to native speakers of portuguese. The conclusion brings forward some theoretical reflexions based on the empiric data collected. In the contrastive dictionary ( vol. II and III), one finds the categorization of each unity of the corpus as well as of its equivalent in portuguese

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to give a description of the teaching and learning of the zero article in secondary schools in Portugal. First of all we were interested in the learning of the zero article and the error analysis has shown cases in the learning of the zero article which were difficult. Afterwards we have presented the differences between the French articles and the Portuguese articles. Then we have dealt with the learning of the zero article and we have analysed the syllabus, the coursebooks and the grammars. We have also inferred the practice of the teachers. Finally, we have formulated some didactic propositions to improve the teaching and learning of the zero article. The method that we have adopted is based on the metalinguistic perception of the learners in what concerns the Foreign Language (grammatical conceptualism). We have suggested some changes in the teaching and we have proposed a series of pratical exercises

Full textThe linguistic concept of vicariancy has never been defined precisely. The purpose of this thesis is therefore on the one hand to determine a notion of general linguistics, and on the other hand to study the main vicariant words in French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. We will see that vicariant words can be characterized by their incompleteness, by their abstract semantism and by the fact of being semantically neutral with regard to their antecedent. We will study from this point of view the verb faire, the que vicariant, the relative and interrogative pronouns, chose, truc, machin and bidule, the third-person pronouns, the pronouns y and en, the demonstrative pronouns and tous and tout, and, each time, their Italian, Spanish and Portuguese equivalents. Our approach is essentially based on Gustave Guillaume’s psychomecanics of language, which has the advantage of being a complete linguistics, since it considers the langue as well as the transition from this one to the discours. The psychomecanics of language postulates that the sense can be described as a movement of thought, and we will try to reconstruct this movement of thought for each one of the vicariant words we have enumerated.The linguistic concept of vicariancy has never been defined precisely. Full textFor a long time Mozambique has been a scène of immigration and the diversity of peoples resulting from those encounters reflected itself on a number of social domains. On of the vestiges of this past is the linguistic diversity. Since 90's it has been a revival on interest on the subject of sociolinguistic management. The prevailing sociolinguistic literature attributes rightly and wrongly to the language used in teaching, in this case, Portuguse, the low rate in scholatic achievement. All these elements considered, for us, it seems simplistic to point out Portuguese as the main cause of academic failure. In fact, a whole lot factors contribute to it. Aiming at reversing the academic tendency simpley by changing the language used in the education system, for us, it does not seem enough; We advocate that parallel to purely linguistic adjustements there should be adjustements making it possible for the prometed languages to "alive" socialy speaking

Full textThis work focuses on the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language by taking into account the teaching of Portuguese to non-native learners who require the language for professional purposes. It draws upon a spoken corpus of European Portuguese used by hotel receptionists in order to explore the pragmatic and discursive phenomena present in this discursive genre. The phenomena analysed include speech acts, modalisation and the address system. Following this linguistic analysis, teaching conceptualisation work was undertaken with regard to the teaching of Portuguese in the hotel industry. This conceptualisation includes the general and communicative (discursive, strategic, intercultural and linguistic) competencies required at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The research is concluded by a presentation of teaching proposals related to teaching Portuguese in the hotel industry such as discursive genre and task teaching or an action-oriented approach focussed on the didactic unit

As a consequence of the country's exchange with Europe during the colonial periods, the national languages ocquired a lot of new lexical items mainly from French, particulary in the technical, political, economical, religions and social fields. Once they are perfectly integrated in the languages' lexicon, they are used by the native speaker in the same way as primitive words are. Presently the socio-economical contacts are mostly localised in the country's urban areas where people meet foreign visitors before they reach the remaining areas of the country

Full textThis thesis is in the field of research on foreign language acquisition. It aims to study the acquisition of the expression of hypothesis in two groups of learners: French speakers learning Portuguese, the Brazilian variety, and Portuguese speakers (Brazilians) learning French. Our research focuses in particular on the means of expression most used to express a virtual causal relationship (what we'll call the hypothesis) in L1 and in two different levels of L2. The data are examined from a formal and functional perspective, based on a functionalist method. We are interested in the role of the mother tongue in the acquisition of hypothesis expression in the target language. Oral data were collected from 90 participants, 45 French and 45 Brazilian. For each language, we had a control group, a less advanced group (CEFR B1) and a more advanced group (CEFR C1). A pseudo-longitudinal (oral) corpus was used to record the progressive development of hypothesis expression in L2. The results of the analyses not only facilitate the comparative study of learners at different levels in two different languages, but also their confrontation with learners from other research carried out in different source and target languages. The main aim is to highlight ongoing phenomena in the acquisition of hypothesis expression in L2

Full textOur study focuses a comparative analysis in Portuguese and Romanian of the dynamic spatial relations expressed by intransitive directional verbs (± locative complement). The theoretical framework (Pottier 2000; Langacker 1987, 1991; Talmy 2000) allows us to combine the linguistic analysis with cognitive parameters. Our aim is a detailed syntactic and semantic study of each of the three classes entering the canonical form (NP1 +) V + preposition + NP2, as well as of their combination at discourse level, since we believe that their interaction offers information about the cognitive representation of the displacement process. First, we study how the two languages combine these three elements, which are the criteria of their combination and which is the interpretation when one of the three classes varies. Second, the analysis according to the cognitive parameters allows us to explain the different conceptualisations and semiotizations of the same spatial scene. Finally, we apply the four cognitive models proposed by Pottier (2000) to the analysed motion verbs and it results that the cognitive model A chronoexpérientiel is the most complex. Consequently, we propose two displacement schemes when several points of reference are expressed. The comparative analysis between two genealogically related languages allows us to present a detailed description of the semantic organization of the displacement in the two languages, as well as a perspective about a different semantic structure of space

Full textStarting from the interdependence of assessment practices and of teaching and learning practices in mother language, this work presents an integration of the reflection on assessment in this field as an indispensable tool to the transformation of the teaching and learning practices of Portuguese as a mother language in the Brazilian context. Seeking to show how this integration can be done, we present the theoretical basis that concern in the first place the language activity, in the second place the speaker and the learner's cognitive activity, and finally the assessment. On this basis, we analysed the assessment practices in portuguese as a mother language in the state of Para, Brazil and we proposed some actions that could reach this goal. This articulation is shown in two different levels: first, at the teaching stage through a teaching and learning approach called interactional approach; second, at in-service training of Portuguese teachers through activities of formative assessment that allow the preparation of teachers according to the interactional approach

Full textThis dissertation investigates the syntax and the acquisition of the left periphery by Portuguese children (from 1;2. 0 to 4;6. 18). A model of the left periphery is proposed, which relies on the system of feature checking within the minimalist framework and on the proxy category theory of phrase structure by Nash and Rouveret (1997, 2002). The C category splits in the course of the derivation in function of its formal features, in order to create the necessary syntactic space enabling the verification of these features. In the model proposed, the periphery is flexible since its syntaxic form may vary depending on constructions and languages. The Derivational Complexity Hypothesis is used to account for the development pattern of the left periphery, which is observable in the linguistic production data of the children under study. This hypothesis predicts that the less complex constructions emerge earlier; the derivational complexity notion being assessed by a specific and adequate complexity measure, which is defined

Full textIn this work, we analyze four markers from Brazilian Portuguese: agora ("now"), entao ("then"), depois ("after"), and ainda ("still"). Our approach is a result of various research trends in pragmatics. These units mark temporal and discursive relations, both functions being present in the actual stage of the language. Our starting hypothesis is that a meaning continuum fastens their different uses. So, we postulate the existence of an invariant core of sense that underlies all their uses, and for which their etymologies give preliminary indications. In the first part of our work, we analyze the temporal uses of these markers. We show that deixis (for agora), anaphora (for entao), succession (for depois), and extension of a limit (for ainda), constitute their basic meaning. In the second part, we analyze their non temporal uses. We do it in two parts: first, their local uses (where they set intra- or inter-propositional relations), and second, their global uses (where they set relations between units that are larger than propositions, and or non adjacent units, as well as conversational uses that create a bridge to other's prior discourse). In their non temporal uses, these markers provide indications about discourse organization, and signal opposition (agora), inference and conclusion (entao), concession (ainda), and argumentative relations (depois, ainda). In conclusion, we discuss the most important notions and theoretical questions raised by our research

Full textWe present an acoustic description of nasal vowels (NV) in Quebec French (QF) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP), languages that possess phonological NV in their inventories. We show that QF and BP NV have different vowel qualities: QF NV are more dispersed than BP’s, smaller contrast (for corresponding NV), and greater amplitude of formantic movement. We also assess discrimination and identification abilities of BP speakers for QF NV. We show that [œ̃] is difficult to perceive because it has no equivalent in Portuguese; variability of [ẽ]’s quality and its important dispersion makes it difficult to discriminate, while its formant movement contributes to its correct identification; [ã] and [ɔ̃] are more easily discriminated, but [ã] is misidentified in a greater proportion because it overlaps several categories, while [ɔ̃] is more easily identified because of its similarities with BP’s [õ].

Full textThe research aimed to attain 3 major goals : (1) to investigate Elementary School students' implicit and explicit knowledge about morphological, derivational and flexional dimensions of Portuguese spoken in Brazil, and also, to identify when, at the schooling process, is more evident the use of each of these levels ; 2) to identify relationships between morphology and other dimensions of language (phonological, lexical and syntactic) and also, how these relationships are expressed at different school levels, namely first , third, fifth and seventh grades ; 3) to investigate how implicit and explicit knowledge about Portuguese morphological dimension relate to literacy acquisition (decoding and understanding) and writing (orthography). Participants were 260 students, being 132 boys and 128 girls, who were enrolled at first (22), third (28), fifth (107) and seventh (103) grades of a private school at Sao Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected through 14 tasks that evaluated implicit and explicit knowledge about derivational and flexional morphology, morphological derivational knowledge employed to extract word composition rule, neologism production, writing performance of dictated words, reading performance (decoding) and sentences (understanding) as weIl as vocabulary. Results showed that first grade students have implicit knowledge, or in other words, are sensitive to derivational morphology, more specifically to suffix, that was not verified among more advanced grades students who displayed more explicit knowledge than implicit. It has also been noticed that since 1st grade, knowledge about the use of prefixes and suffixes is employed in the composition of fictitious words. For the two following group of objectives, the expected significant correlations between morphological knowledge and other linguistic dimensions - phonological, syntactical and lexical - are observed since 3rd grade. From this grade on we also verified a growing number of correlations between morphological knowledge and the performance of both reading and writing. In conclusion, we consider that some advances were made into the understanding of the role of implicit and explicit derivational morphological knowledge, and some open questions remain to be answered by future research
