Full textThis doctoral thesis focuses on two main topics in the semantics of French nominal phrases headed by "des" and "de". The first part is devoted to the generic and habitual reading of sentences with "des" NPs' phrases in subject position. We argue that three types of genericity must be distinguished : (i) quasi-universal genericity, (ii) taxonomic genericity, (iii) partitive genericity, and that all three interpretations are available with "des" DPs. The internal structure of "des" DPs plays a crucial role in the selection of one of these three readings. For example, the occurence of a predicative semamtic restrictive phrase in the logial form is a necessary condition for the availability of the quasi-universal generic reading. The second part deals with "de" phrases in object position within negative sentences. We suggest that "de"is a deficient determiner, whose only function is to satisfy a formal constraint banning bare NPs in French. We argue that "de" phrases in negative sentences cannot be considered as Negative Polarity Items, and exhibit most of the caracteristics of semantically incorporated items

Full textThe aim of this study is to show how, in deep structure operations, word order in Korean takes on an important metalinguistic dimension, affecting the way the speakers see the world. Guillaume's psycho-mechanical theory, insofar as it does not cut off the speech act from the speaker and the context of communication is particularly well-equipped to examine this question. The study starts with the identification of the immediate constituents of the simple sentence in Korean (semasiological approach). Next, with a view to highlighting the morpho-syntactical and semantic organization of the language, the variations in meaning obtained by the different internal ordering of each functional constituent unit is examined at word level, at phrase level and at sentence level. To what extent is the speaker free to choose the order in which he arranges the elements of the sentence he instantiates in the speech act? These are just some of the questions that this study tries to answer. This study comprises four parts. The first examines the structure of Korean sentence: from the sentence to the phrase. The second focuses on the disposition of sentence constituents. The third part investigates the order of the constituents within the noun phrase, comparing relative positions of the determinant in the phrase. This relates to the rules governing the combination of lexical words and grammatical words; this sheds light on the internal syntax of each functional constituent of the utterance. Finally, the last part is devoted to syntax of the adverb, based on its mobility and the way that position affects adverbial incidence

Full textThis thesis argues in favour of describing all proper names (PN, including proper nouns) in English as nominals, regardless of how many / which words they include – London, Christmas, Everbrite, United States, Wuthering Heights, GrandMother’s Footsteps, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. A nominal corresponds to the intermediary stage between a noun and a noun phrase (NP): such a unit can be modified, or modify something else, and it needs a determiner in order to form a NP. To confirm this “proper nominal” hypothesis, the typographic, morpho-syntactic and referential properties of PNs are analysed: the significance of the capital letter (and other signs), sub-phrasal modification (close appositions, PN + PN, N + PN, PN + N patterns of modification), reduction processes and their link to “nounyness”, external determination and noun classes, the question of meaning / sense. Stating that proper names are nominals questions their so-called “inherently definite” property as nominals require an external determiner that would inform on the (in)definiteness of the NP as a whole. It also allows for the existence of a zero determiner associated with PNs, whose referential logics align. Finally, this hypothesis suggests that proper names (even proper nouns) are not exactly nouns: only common nouns are. PNs are analysed as nominalising units par excellence, enabling sometimes long, non-nominal or non-orthographic (numbers, symbols) sequences to be integrated into a NP and to behave “like” a noun. PNs may not be nouns, but by imitating nouns, they tend to be increasingly integrated into the linguistic system. As a result, they also seem to be associated with the expression of a high degree
Vicente, Fernanda Pedrita. "Predicado Nominal em Posição Temática: Papéis Modalizadores." Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Parana, 2007. http://tede.unioeste.br:8080/tede/handle/tede/2404.
Full textThe aim of this research is to investigate the modalization role of the nominal predicate in thematic position from the analysis of textual portions at phrasal level, taken from texts produced by candidates to Unioeste entrance examination, in 2004. The interest in promoting an analysis in this context reflects an attempt to contribute, yet minimally, with the teaching of Portuguese, considering that the writing activities at high school aim to prepare the students linguistic-discursive abilities for the text production at the entrance examination. During the route traced for the development of this work, we tried to demonstrate that the unity nominal predicate + subject represents a structure of asseverative content from which the text producer exposes value judgments. The thematic position is used as a parameter for the recognition, in the syntactic plan, of a specific type of semantic organization. The delimitation of a syntactic-semantic description conducted an evaluation that joins the thematic position and the modalization content activated by the nominal predicate. For this reason, Halliday´s (1985) theory, based on the thematic structure of the clause, and the studies on modalization made by authors like Parret (1988), Castilho and Castilho (1992), Neves (1996), among others, support the hypothesis that the nominal predicate, when placed before the subject, plays a modalization role. The analysis carried out resulted in the recognition of a relationship between the nominal predicate and the propositional content exposed inside the subject. In this sense, the classification proposed in this work, although limited, summarizes the interpretation derived from comparisons and contrasts of the relationship PN + subject .
Paris, INALCO, 2001. http://www.theses.fr/2001INAL0004.
Full textDid the Germanic languages fix the position of the adjective epithet before the substantive, did Albanian place it behind, then why French he would not make it ? This position in French being always variable, soon before and soon behind the substantive (of course, it is not valid for all), small problem pose to the French and to the French-speaking strangers. It is for it that we undertook such a research that is especially important that she/it also touches Albanian. From there, it comes out again that the comparative method is the one that predominated our research. A small preview on the source of these two languages appeared us indispensable. We also had need to really know the used terminology. The discovery of the ways of adjectives epithets, used to try to find the reasons of the positions different of this adjective in French as well as the concordances of Albanian on that point. These adjectives can be of the relational, of colour, of shape, of nominal or verbal origin ; they can be also monosyllabic or polysyllabic. Following their adherence in these divisions, their sometimes offer different senses in relation to the position that they occupy by the substantive. It appears us that the adverb also has a some role to play. Most adjectives epithets always have a fuzzy position in French, what makes that the anteposition and the postposition are always present, with a predominance rather important of the second. It doesn't prevent to have some adjectives epithets with a stationary place close to a substantive, either before, either behind ; coordinated juxtaposed either. All it made that this question has been called by specialists all domains, especially by the linguists. This problem has been landed of different sides. Of the linguists, of the old centuries, rather made it of a point of view unscientific, of others, more recent, from a structuralist or semantic view point, as well as from a stylistic and pragmatic view point. Does an acceptable solution exist then, to this phenomenon ? For us only one rule of after which we could choose the position of the adjective epithet in French doesn't exist. On the other hand, there are several choices. It is in relation to what we want to say, and in relation to the means that we use to say it, that these choices intervene in turns

Full textThis dissertation deals with the use of definite and indefinite determiners in generic noun phrases in contemporary English, using a corpus based on encyclopedic and scientific texts mainly. The categorization which genericity is based on results from various cognitive processes and levels of abstraction which are signified in the use of definite and indefinite determiners. The first part successively describes the referential framework of our study, the morphosyntactical forms of generic noun phrases, the values of definite and indefinite articles, as well as the pattern of constraints on definite and indefinite articles established by the lexico-grammatical features of nouns and the predicative context. The second part examines determiner possibilities and impossibilities with regard to the predicative context when a generic noun phrase is combined with a kind-predicate. More specifically, we correlate species classification, singular/plural number marking and definite/indefinite determination as we examine the plural structure of generic referents. The third part studies the use of the definite article as an abstraction operator. As we consider cases in which the use of definite noun phrases is favored, we show that its reference involves an externalizing and synthetic dimension. The fourth part deals with the way generic definite and indefinite noun phrases combine in generic texts with regard to the discourse structure. The use of the definite article presupposes an anaphoric dimension in generic reference also and indicates that the referent is salient in a cognitive perspective
Luu, Thi Kim Anh. "Etudes contrastives des déterminants quantificateurs en français et en vietnamien." Thesis, Lyon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LYSE2012.
Full textThe purpose of this contrastive study of quantitative determinants in French and Vietnamese is to examine the means expressing nominal quantification in the two languages and to establish a semantic classification of the quantifying determinants in order to show the common points as well as the syntactic and semantic differences of the equivalent quantifiers, on the other hand. The linguistic means used to express nominal quantification in both languages borrow their expression at all levels: syntax, lexicon, semantics, phonology, morphology which are not always corresponding in both languages. Morphological means such as prefixation, suffixation, pluralisation of names play a vital arole in the ways expressing nominal quantification in French, whereas in Vietnamese, as an insulating language, does not have this possibility. In Vietnamese, on the contrary, the phonological means are used frequently but they are not at all in French. The common way of quantifying in both languages is the use of the system of quantifying determinants. Those quantifying determinants would make readers think of a heterogeneity at the same time categorial, syntactic and semantic. This research has shown there is not always a correspondence between the grammatical categories of nominal quantifiers in French and Vietnamese. Moreover, corresponding to a quantifying determinant in French, it can have several equivalent terms in Vietnamese and vice versa. The heterogeneity and the categorical non-correspondence of quantifying determinants in French and Vietnamese allowed us to confirm the impossibility of establishing a strict correspondence table of quantifying determinants in French and Vietnamese. In order to show the commonalities and the differences of these systems, a classification of quantifying determinants in French and Vietnamese according to quantitative levels has been established. This ranking presented the means and quantifying determinants that used to express each quantitative level. It also helped us to cite the quantifying determinants considered equivalent in terms of the quantity expressed. Since these equivalents often do not belong to the corresponding categories in the two languages, we then tried to compare them syntactically and semantically in order to show the common characteristics, the differences as well as the equivalence conditions between them

Full textThe aim of this research is to study the way children acquire the referential use of nouns and pronouns in dialogues with their mother. The question is to determine whether the child acquires the pragmatics values of these referential expressions after their morpho-syntactic forms or at the same time? The analysis of our longitudinal data, three French-speaking children aged between 1;11 and 3 years, shows that determiner categories are gradually acquired and that the process implies the use of precursory phenomena, such as ‚filler-syllables‛. We also observe that young children show a certain ability to introduce, maintain and reintroduce referents with appropriate referential expressions. Those findings suggest that the referential valuesof nouns and pronouns are acquired from a very early age in French language
