For the non-collaborative problem, characterization encompassing the number of minima and the causes thereof is provided. Based on these efforts, we propose an improvement to the existing modified parallel projection method (MPPM), the reflected parallel projection method (RPPM). We show that the global minimum to the non-collaborative objective function can nearly always be found using the non-optimal reflected parallel projection method (RPPM). For the collaborative

This Master’s thesis studies different ways of exploiting the signal strength measurements from wireless interfaces for position determination. Difficulties include handling the fluctuating observations and their sensitivity to obstruction. Compared to typical fingerprinting solutions, the training time is an order of magnitude shorter, but the location resolution is limited to locations of particular interest.

These features can be leveraged in the design wireless ad hoc position-location networks (PoLoNets) for accurate location tracking and monitoring where GPS is not available, especially indoors. The widespread adoption of 802.11x wireless LAN as the network infrastructure creates the opportunity to deploy WiFi-based location services with few additional hardware costs. While recent research has demonstrated adequate performance, localization error increases significantly in crowded and dynamic situations due to electromagnetic interferences. This paper proposes collaborative localization as an approach to enhance position estimation by leveraging more accurate loc

Passive source localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is an important field of research with numerous applications in signal processing and wireless communications. One purpose of a WSN is to determine the position of a signal emitted from a source. This position is estimated based on received noisy measurements from sensors (anchor nodes) that are distributed over a geographical area. In most cases, the sensor positions are assumed to be known exactly, which is not always reasonable. Even if the sensor positions are measured initially, they can change over time. Due to the sens

This project proposes an approach for supporting Indoor Navigation Systems using Pedestrian Dead Reckoning-based methods and by analyzing motion sensor data available in most modern smartphones. Processes suggested in this investigation are able to calculate the distance traveled by a user while he or she is walking. WLAN fingerprint- based navigation systems benefit from the processes followed in this research and results achieved to reduce its workload and improve its positioning estimations.

This work compares localization techniques used in mobile robotics. Localization - how to determine one's own position within a space - is one of the fundamental challenges of robotics. The introduction is devoted to a detailed description of localization and to the categorization of localization techniques. In subsequent chapters, category by category, various localization techniques and their variants are described and their strengths and weaknesses are compared. The work successively addresses: probabilistic localization techniques used for inaccurate sensor measurements processing and for
