Abstract:
In Paradigm Function Morphology, it is usual to model affix position classes with an ordered sequence of inflectional rule blocks. Each rule block determines how (or whether) a particular affix position is filled. In this model, competition among inflectional rules is assumed to be limited to members of the same rule block; thus, the appearance of an affix in one position cannot be precluded by the appearance of an affix in another position. I present evidence that apparently disconfirms this restriction and suggests that a more general conception of rule competition is necessary. The data appear to imply that an affixation rule may in some cases override a rule introducing an affix occupying another, distinct position. I propose that each inflectional rule R carry two indices — the first, as usual, specifying the position of the affix introduced by R. The second, however, specifies the position(s) that R satisfies. By default, these two indices identify the same position. However, where one affix precludes another, the second index of the appearing affix specifies two affix positions: the one in which it appears and the one which it precludes. With both blocks satisfied, no other rules which fill either may be applied.

Abstract:
When an observer or a target is moving, the motion of the eye or the object can be taken into account to compute the current object locations. It has been shown many times that visual motion can strongly influence the perceived position of an object. For example, a stationary patch containing moving texture (De Valois &amp; De Valois, 199; Ramachandran &amp; Anstis, 1990), a flash presented on (Cavanagh &amp; Anstis, 2013) or next to (Whitney &amp; Cavanagh, 2000) a moving texture, and even the onset and offset positions of the moving targets (Fröhlich, 1923) are perceived as shifted in the direction of motion. In this thesis we explore the relationship between these motion-induced position shifts and visual attention in the following forms: 1) transient spatial attention, 2) global and local attention, 3) sustained spatial attention, and 4) object-based attention. In the first series of experiments we looked at whether and how attention modulates the shift in localization of motion onset (Fröhlich effect). In Experiments 1 and 2 we measured Fröhlich effect under different cueing conditions and established that invalid or late cues produced larger perceptual shifts. In Experiment 3 we compare the motion-induced shifts when the subjects attended to a set of moving stimuli as a group and when they attended to an orientation singleton. We showed that the Fröhlich effect was only present when the target was individuated and disappeared when the stimulus was perceived globally. Thus, the Fröhlich effect appeared to be both produced and modulated by focal attention. Having established that temporal delays of attention increase motion-induced position shifts, the next study explored if spatial distribution of attention has a similar effect. In this study we used flash grab - an illusory position shift seen when a target is briefly flashed on top of a moving background that abruptly changes direction (Cavanagh &amp; Anstis, 2013). Trials were presented in blocks and before each block a cue indicated a range of possible target locations. We found that the flash grab was reduced if the spatial distribution of targets was limited to a range of 90° or less. The final study asked whether motion shifts the perceived position of an object as a whole or if separate features of a single object are shifted independently. To test this we used the flash grab paradigm and briefly presented a shape on top of a moving background at the moment it changed direction. The results showed that the features of the target that were orthogonal to the background motion were shifted, whereas the features parallel to the motion were intact. This suggests that motion interacts with the position of the object's features (and focal attention selects them) before they are bound together into an object. In conclusion, we applied a variety of attentional manipulations to motion-induced position shifts, and examined the link between the strength of the illusion and the characteristics of attention used in a particular task. We found that 1) motion-induced position shifts require focused attention and the possibility to track an individual motion trajectory; 2) allowing attention to be allocated more efficiently in space reduces the illusion; and 3) motion-induced shifts operate on the feature-based and not object-based level

Abstract:
Today outer –often opposing- influences are endless; varying from contact with group features such as cultural, economical, national distinctions to differences in individual religious beliefs, sexual behavior, political views, ecological consciousness, etc. … Being confronted with this otherness leads to a crumbling, an unsettling notion of the known, the established values which throughout time were thought to have become one’s own; leading to confusion and resulting in the questioning of the self. A learning and growing process which does not become easier with all the changes in our contemporary Western society… How do we, contemporary Western human beings deal with the apparent freedom and insecurity we are confronted with in our society? The essay starts off by looking at some of the major shifts in our contemporary society. A first important change is the space-time compression. The consequences of this shift, such as the dissolving of nations, hybridizing of national identities, globalization and theuncertainty it brings forth, are explored from different angles.Fast-moving trends have caused a confusion of beliefs and identities and as there is not one principle provided, one has to learn to grasp the contrasts. Today there is a taste for heterogeneity, causing a shift towards openness, inclusion and tolerance. Even though it is on its dispositions that contemporary society thrives, it also means that opposing extremes exist next to one another. In our ‘information society’ innovation of communication and knowledge occupy a significant role. Besides the confusion caused through the space-time compression, all truly transformative advances in knowledge bring along the downside of uncertainty and incalculability.Along with these ‘sources for uncertainty’, there is also a short look into possible certainties in contemporary life, since traditional religions and modern substitutes are not satisfactory and a strong belief in anything today seems rather improbable.A possible source for answers and improvements which is given are the humanities. They confront people with making judgments about the relationship between facts and values. It is important in creating awareness in an ‘information society’ since innovations are value-free. Humanities can have the ambition to bring people towards each other to take up new forms of identification that are open for collaboration and unity.

Abstract:
Our reasoning consists in studying the trade of occupational therapists. This profession can be included in a professional field in which legitimacy and recognition are at stake. Occupational therapy is a profession of reeducation and rehabilitation, that supposes a three-year training in special schools and for which a state degree is delivered. Indeed the state validates the professional qualification of occupational therapists through the decree of competences. However, the therapy performed by the occupational therapists has to be (taken) in accordance with medical doctor instruction. So, in the medical work division the place of the occupational therapist is in the middleman like the physiotherapist or the psychomotrician for instance. In these conditions can the occupational therapists get autonomy to a certain extent? Among the medical world in general the occupational therapists have difficulties to find a place because the knowledge on which is based the profession stems from many areas (medicine, psychology, ergonomics, ). In addition to that, all the areas covered by occupational therapists are not always known by the general practitioners, the others paramedical professions and people in general. So the recognition of the trade like the occupational therapists depends in great part on ability on his members to emphasize their expertise among the medical body, the patients and the administration

Abstract:

Lau, K. S. "Position controlled disc valve." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1987. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/847625/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent developments of electro-hydraulic disc valves at Surrey University have shown that with a careful balance between the hydraulic and magnetic forces, this type of valve can be used as a digital or proportional device. As the valve is simpler in construction and involves very few critical dimension compared with a servo-valve, the sensitivity to contamination is considerably reduced. The dynamic response of the valve is fast due to utilising high electro-magnetic and fluid forces for actuation. The research described in this thesis is an extension of earlier work by Yuksel and Usman to improve electro-hydraulic disc valves by applying closed-loop position or pressure control to the disc. From an investigation of an unbalanced single disc valve, it was found that using position feedback can help to stabilise the disc under varying load conditions. A special differential capacitive transducer to measure the disc position was designed and constructed and was found to perform satisfactorily. As the pressure-flow characteristic of the valve can be varied by controlling the disc position, the function of the valve is similar to an electrically controlled variable orifice. Various modular configurations are proposed to perform more complicated control functions. In the final part of the research, a double disc valve is described for used in an application study to control the damping characteristic of a modified vehicle shock absorber. Initially, the valve was designed for closed-loop position control due to the non-linear hydraulic and magnetic forces. Results show that the valve can be controlled to generate the required range of damping force and has adequate dynamic performance with a response time in the range of 10 to 30 msec. However, tests using direct pressure control were also carried out. Preliminary results indicate that pressure feedback is preferable to position feedback and that by using lead compensation together with a proportional plus integral controller, stable operation is possible.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between strength and position control, with an emphasis on measurements at low, absolute levels of force, as well as to examine the effect of load on position control. 33 healthy and physically active male university students were subjected to maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) tests and a weighted positional knee extension task involving trials at force levels ranging from 0.5-20kg, with the goal of maintaining position. Among the principal findings was the fact that strength did not affect position variability at lower levels of force, while at higher force levels, the stronger subjects exhibited lower levels of position variability. Thus, it was concluded that general strength training up to a certain level is non-detrimental to force control at low levels of resistance, and that increases in strength may contribute positively to force control at moderate force levels. In accordance with previous research, variability increased as a function of load, while variability relative to load decreased with added weight. At the heaviest weights, strength became the main determinant of performance, while its importance at lower force levels was negligible. Mean and maximum frequency of velocity and acceleration exhibited a U-shaped relationship with weight, which at the lower end was attributed in part to an inability to perceive and correct for the small force oscillations, as well as low inertia.

Berntsen, Per Ivar Barth. "Structural reliability based position mooring." Doctoral thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Marine Technology, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-2134.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>This thesis considers control of moored marine structures, referred to as position mooring. Moored marine structures can take on a number of different forms, and two applications are considered in this work, namely aquacultural farms and petroleum producing vessels. It is anticipated that future aquacultural farms will be significantly larger than the existing ones, and placed in much more exposed areas. Hence, there is a significant technology transfer potential between the two seemingly different fields of aquaculture and petroleum exploitation.</p><p>Today’s implemented state of the art positioning controllers use predetermined safety regions and gain-scheduling for evaluating the necessary thruster force for the vessel to operate safely. This represents a suboptimal solution; the operator is given a significant number of variables to consider, and the thrusters are run more than necessary. Also, it is likely that a more conservative controller regime does not necessarily increase the overall reliability of the structure as compared with a less conservative but better designed controller.</p><p>Motivated by this, a new control methodology and strategy for position mooring is developed. Two controllers using information about the reliability of the mooring system are implemented and tested, both via numerical simulations and model scale experiments. The first controller developed uses a reliability criterion based on the tension in the mooring system as a pretuning device. A nonlinear function based on the energy contained by the system is included in the controller to ensure that the thrusters are run only when needed. The controller is an output-feedback controller, based on measurement of position and estimated values of the velocities and slowly varying environmental loads. The second controller developed contains the reliability criterion intrinsically, thus, less pretuning is needed. The backstepping technique is applied during the design process, and the controller has global asymptotical stability properties.</p>

Abstract:
There appears to be a growing recognition among economists and other social commentators that people attempt to enhance their relative position (which is commonly described as status) through consumption choices and other behaviour. It has been less common to consider whether attempts to enhance relative position impact on saving behaviour. This thesis makes a number of contributions relating to the impact of relative position on saving behaviour. In this thesis I: - consider why concern for relative position may impact on saving behaviour. I demonstrate, with a simple intertemporal model the surprising result that when people are concerned with relative position, income risk can lead to most people saving less and the rich saving more. - conduct an empirical study to test the importance of relative position on saving behaviour. I find a statistically and economically significant relationship between peer income and saving behaviour consistent with theories that people actively forgo saving to seek to enhance their relative position. I use the data to demonstrate that relative position can help to explain why prior research has consistently found that the rich have higher saving rates. - consider the policy implications of relative position to saving behaviour. I examine the policies, primarily corrective taxation, that have been advocated to address externalities of relative position in a static setting. I find that there are significant issues when these policies are considered in an intertemporal setting. I examine the policy of mandatory saving in addressing distortions caused by relative position and the possibility that concern for relative position improves the effectiveness of mandatory saving policy.

Abstract:
Presented in this thesis is a summary of the development of gallium arsenide position sensitive detectors. These are aimed at various applications with the original motivation being experimental particle physics. An account is given of basic semiconductor physics relevant to particle detectors. A review of electronics applicable to reading out charged signals from semiconductor detectors is included. Applications of gallium arsenide X-ray detectors are described together with results from a Monte-Carlo simulation of the spectrum obtained from an X-ray source. The design, fabrication and laboratory testing of detectors is presented for pixel and microstrip detectors and other test structures. Test beam results are also presneted for pixel and microstrip detectors. An introduction to ATLAS detector simulation is also given, with examples of detector descriptions for the GaAs Forward Semiconductor Tracker. Results from a generator level study of b-jets from the process Hbb and predictions of influences in the Forward Tracker are also given.

Araújo, Filipe. "Position-Based Distributed Hash Tables." Doctoral thesis, Department of Informatics, University of Lisbon, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/14297.

Abstract:
In this thesis we want to create scalable, fault-tolerant and self-configuring dictionaries that can be deployed in a wide range of networks, including highly dynamic networks with frequent membership changes, like peer-to-peer overlay networks or wireless ad hoc networks. In recent years, distributed hash tables (DHTs) have emerged as a solution to implement large-scale dictionaries. However, given the existing bandwidth limitations, updating routing information in DHTs remains a challenge. Position-based routing schemes arise as an attractive solution to this problem, due to inexpensive and ubiquitous localization mechanisms. Positional information enables the creation of oblivious (or memoryless) routing schemes, where the coordinates of the current forwarding node, of its neighbors and of the destination, suffice to determine the next hop. Such routing schemes are very suitable to rapidly changing networks, because they require very little control information. We argue in this thesis that we can use positional information to efficiently support routing and DHT operation in wireless ad hoc and in wired networks, whenever position of nodes reflects network topology. To support this claim, we create and evaluate a number of algorithms that simultaneously support routing and DHT operation in both types of networks. % As an interesting result of our work, we can combine solutions into a single architecture that spans wired and wireless networks. This architecture can provide a seamless integration and use of a position-based DHT, despite the access network of the peer nodes

Abstract:
PART I I believe we are products of the age in which we live. Contemporary thinking shapes our historical present and reinterprets our historical past. This world is shaped by many keyhole views. The cornerstones of knowledge are built on a foundation of theory and objective reality. However, the fundamental underpinning of knowledge and theory lies in our perception of reality itself. The old cliche, “you don’t know what you have until you lose it,” is a perspective from which we can evaluate that which preceded as well as the threshold of new thought. A construction of reality is fundamental, yet particular to the temporal context. I propose to explore these issues and their relationship to judgement and decision making processes in design. The approach will be essentially pluralistic. PART II The uncertainty of the historical present is coupled with a hope for the future. For many architects the future holds their vision and inspiration. The future is, after all, the horizon we travel toward. Man is now expanding this horizon to space and other planets with alternative environments. Part II will explore architecture as atmosphere, landscape and dwellings through a collection of paintings free of the constraints of existing technology and theory. Architecture must first exist in the mind and heart before it can come into being.<br>Master of Architecture

Abstract:
This work discusses the use of Positive Position Feedback (PPF) for Active Vibration Control as part of an Active Damage Control System (ADCS). Vibration control increases the fatigue life of a structure and decreases the in-plane stresses that can cause delamination in a composite. PPF is a collocated direct-output feedback control method that increases the effective damping in a structure. A simply-supported beam was used as the testbed which used strain gages as the sensing element and piezoelectric ceramics as the actuator.</p> <p> Initial investigations into sampled-data systems using PPF are presented. The issues addressed are: stability of the sampled system, the effects of the sampling rate on the system, and degradation from predicted analog performance. A digital design procedure for the tuning filters in the Z-plane is suggested if the sampling rate to be used is known. If the sampling rate varies significantly, to avoid redesigning the filters for each new sampling rate, they should be designed in the continuous-time and transformed to the Z-plane. The Tustin transformation was found to adequately map the poles and zeros of the compensator to the Z-plane for digital control.</p> <p> Experimental implementation of PPF on a simply-supported beam resulted in vibration suppression of three modes with a S180 controller. The beam was subjected to both a single-frequency harmonic disturbance and a broadband harmonic disturbance. One, two, and three-mode controllers were designed with disturbance suppression up to 15dB achieved.</p><br>Master of Science

Elftorp, Kristian. "Abuse of a dominant position : The legal position of tying practices within European Competition Law." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Commercial Law, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-12245.

Abstract:
<p>This thesis intends to analyze and clarify the legal position regarding abuse of a dominant position and particularly tying practices. The practice is central within European competition law and has been highly discussed in literature recently. In Article 102 TFEU it is explicitly stated that supplementary obligations which have no connection with the subject of such contracts, shall be considered as a way of abusing a position of strength. Although the method is often reasonable and very common within many business areas, it might be pursued as a tactic of excluding competition. The General Court’s decision in <em>Microsoft </em>led to some confusion as regards to the European approach towards tying practices. Prior to that judgment, the EU Courts appeared quite negative to the practice and seemed determined that the practice was in fact anticompetitive. For an example, in <em>Hilti </em>the Court found it sufficient that the company had deprived its costumers of a choice. The effects on competition were not analyzed in great detail and in most cases the EU Courts fined the undertaking involved in such business methods. However, in <em>Microsoft </em>the General Court took a new approach and focused on the actual effects that followed from the practice. Many argues that European competition law has moved from a <em>per se </em>approach to a <em>rule of reason</em> approach. In my opinion however, it seems relatively unclear whether or not this new approach shall apply to all versions of tying or if it was applied due to the certain circumstances involved in <em>Microsoft</em>. The tying practice involved a form of technical tying, i.e. an integration of two distinctive products. Cases prior to <em>Microsoft </em>mostly concerned a form of contractual tying and were treated very differently by the EU Courts. My opinion on the matter is therefore that it is not possible to declare a clear legal position regarding the practice of tying. There is a need for new judgments and official guidelines since the current situation deprives companies of legal security as concerns the practice of tying within European competition law.</p>

Abstract:
Ora stiamo convalidando punti di dati isolati con analisi più specifiche dell'IS.<br>Gene Therapy (GT), the recent approach to cure rare and inherited genetic disorders by delivering therapeutic gene in targeted cells interacted with bioinformatics and data analysis-related domains. In GT applications, the molecular monitoring of the treatment is required and exploits Next generation sequencing (NGS) to assess efficacy and safety. One of the principal efforts in IS identification is mapping millions of sequenced reads to the reference genome. Today, several aligners are available for this aim. However, still improving the IS detection performance by choice of appropriate algorithm and testing various pre-/post-alignment filtering strategies is the scope of some works. Since despite the current improvements in the field, some factors like length of sequence reads, repeat regions in the reference genomes and sequence errors decrease the mapping accuracy. False Positive IS, is an IS that is reported at the end of IS identification when it is not present. Mis-alignment is one of the possible sources for False Positive IS.Here, to solve the problem of False Positive and discarding the noise in our clinical IS databases, we first focused on alignment and post-alignment filtering. For this aim, we generated a ground truth of simulated reads overall composed by 125,778,685 sequencing reads containing a total number of 4,333,904 IS and tried to test several steps of our bioinformatics pipeline. We confirmed that BWA-MEM, the widely-used aligner which is also the choice of VISPA2 has a good performance with 91% accuracy. Further analyses revealed that some of the statistic measurements such as Mapping Quality (MAPQ) and Sub optimal Alignment Score (XS) that are reported for each mapping result are not well-correlated with alignment accuracy. Therefore, filtering steps after alignment might lead to discarding many reads without improving the accuracy. Discarding reads which are aligned correctly might highly reduce sequence count. Moreover, knowing that interaction of several factors such as read length, sequencing errors, uniqueness of the reference genome together could contribute to the final alignment outcome, we proposed a decision tree-based filtering approach. Our result showed that XGBoost algorithm and the set of features which are related to sequence reads, alignment statistics and genome properties with the accuracy of 95% is able to identify artifacts of synthetic reads. This suggested that the current filtering approach can be replaced by our proposed method. In the second part, we aimed at assigning a probability score to each IS to be observed in that genomic region. To achieve this goal, we exploited the known genomic preferences of viral vector and added new genomic features to generate a probability score. Our results on GT patients with two different disease backgrounds showed AUROC > 80%. Majority of IS with low probability score have low values for sequence count and re-occurrence. We are now validating isolated data points with more IS specific analyses.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses how Hezbollah has perceived Israel since its establishment. In this study it is argued that Israel is the main enemy of and source of hatred for Hezbollah. The references of this overall statement are the ideology and political, social and military history of Hezbollah. The armed struggle of Hezbollah against Israel started with the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon evolved into both a political participation with the continued armed militia in the period between 1982 to today. During this period, in addition to its armed conflict with Israel, Hezbollah came on the stage with social services for Lebanese society and political propaganda in Lebanese elections. The intersection point of these three identities is the endless encouragement of Hezbollah for a determined resistance against Israel. While on the one hand Hezbollah defines Israel to be the most dangerous threat for the world, in addition to being a prominent enemy for the Arab and Muslim community<br>on the other hand Israel regards Hezbollah to be the highest impact menace. Consequently, the thesis is finalized with outputs and predictions taking all historical and ideological aspects into concern.

Abstract:
This Master’s thesis studies different ways of exploiting the signal strength measurements from wireless interfaces for position determination. Difficulties include handling the fluctuating observations and their sensitivity to obstruction. We list important factors to take into account before describing a new system based on location fingerprinting and capable of integrating observations from multiple wireless interfaces. Compared to typical fingerprinting solutions, the training time is an order of magnitude shorter, but the location resolution is limited to locations of particular interest. In an office environment, the proposed solution determines the location correctly 80 percent of the time with sufficient precision for being used with context-aware services. In an open space environment, an incorrect location is reported 42 percent of the time.<br>Det här exjobbet studerar olika sätt att använda signalstyrka från trådlösa gränssnitt för positionsbestämning.

Ray, Indrani. "Analysis of offset pulse position modulation." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2015. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/24847/.

Full text
Abstract:
This work presents the performance analysis of the offset pulse position modulation (PPM) scheme using graded-index plastic optical fibre with a Gaussian impulse response. The aim of this analysis is to predict how sensitivity, error, number of required photons, threshold voltage, and the effect of inter-symbol interference will change with the change in the number of data bits encoded at a rate of 1 Gbit/s. An information theory analysis is presented in detail and also the band-utilization efficiency is determined. Results are compared to equivalent digital PPM and multiple PPM schemes and it is also shown that offset PPM gives an advantage over on-off keying (OOK). Bit error rate (BER) analysis has been presented numerically. The errors due to different coding techniques are compared. It has also been shown that offset pulse position modulation is more power efficient than multiple pulse position modulation. The spectral analysis of offset pulse position modulation coding scheme has been carried out. For an offset PPM sequence the spectral characteristics is presented both theoretically and numerically. The results show strong frequency components at the frame rate and, if return-to-zero pulses are used, the slot rate. Slot synchronisation has been taken into consideration for the first time as offset PPM spectrum exhibits discrete slot rate component. The effect of pulse shaping and modulating index on the spectrum has been shown. The dependency of slot component on the pulse shape is examined. The results show that the frame synchronisation is possible for offset PPM as this coding exhibits a strong frame rate component. A comparison of spectral characteristics has been presented considering digital, multiple and shortened PPM. For ease of implementation an offset PPM coder has been designed. In this work an efficient clock recovery topology is presented for offset PPM data sequence at the receiver end. For clock recovery, a phase locked loop is designed. Data recovery has also been presented. It is shown that a frame clock can be extracted from the data sequence that yields the possibility of frame synchronization. A detailed noise analysis has been performed for random offset PPM input. It has been shown that the proposed clock recovery system is also effective for extracting other data sequence. To elucidate, a multiple Pulse Position Modulation (MPPM) data sequence is considered. The MPPM data sequence has also been synchronised with the recovered clock. A noise analysis is carried out for multiple PPM.

Mahmood, Faaiz Hadi. "Implementation of Offset Pulse Position Modulation." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2017. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34409/.

Abstract:
Optical fibre systems have played a key role in making possible the extraordinary growth in world-wide communications that has occurred in the last 25 years, and are vital in enabling the proliferating use of the Internet. Its high bandwidth capabilities, low attenuation characteristics, low cost, and immunity from the many disturbances that can afflict electrical wires and wireless communication links make it ideal for gigabit transmission and a major building block in the telecommunication infrastructure. The main concern of this thesis is a full and detailed investigation and implementation of the Offset Pulse Position Modulation (Offset PPM) communication system. Novel work is carried out for applying Offset PPM over an optical communication channel theoretically and experimentally to examine the system performance. An Offset PPM encoder and decoder were implemented to code Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) format into Offset PPM format and to decode back the Offset PPM to PCM. The first paradigm of implementation was implemented using electronic components. A further investigation took place on the Offset PPM associated output. Computer programming and simulation using the VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) of this PPM code was considered and comparison with previous theoretical results presented. The received Offset PPM signal returned back to its original input PCM form without errors. Successful VHDL and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation using Altera Quartus II of Offset PPM encoder and decoder as a single system has been presented in the study. An FPGA embedded Bit Error Rate (BER) test device has also been implemented for sensitivity measurements purposes and all the designs have been tested successfully with back-to-back testing. Results show that Offset PPM is an advantageous PPM code for optic communication. Furthermore, the system has achieved a very high data rate of 50 Mb/s without an optical communication set. An optical communication system (transmitter/receiver) over POF was developed and the Offset PPM scheme was investigated through this optical channel. Results show that the Offset PPM sequence transferred through the optic system without being altered. In addition, this implementation is optimised PPM coding; the system is working perfectly with up to 10 Mb/s with 10-12 BER based on the limitations of the optical communication set. All the results and analyses indicate that Offset PPM is an ideal alternative to be considered for highly dispersive optical channels, and performance evaluation for higher bandwidths also favourably compares to existing coding schemes.

Abstract:
Discipline relationships are consensual adult relationships between submissive and dominant partners who employ authority and corporal punishment. This population uses social media to discuss the private nature of their ritualized fantasies, desires, and practices. Participants of these relationships resist a sadomasochistic label of BDSM or domestic abuse. I conducted in-depth interviews and narrative analysis of social media to explore experiences and identities of people in discipline relationships. The sample includes social media bloggers and past and present participants in discipline relationships. I compared explanations participants give for wanting and participating in discipline relationships. I combine identity theory, constructionism, post-structuralism, and critical feminism as an analytic frame to understand this practice sociologically. I found gender differences in the media format and communication style of participants, but the ritualized expressions for discipline relationships remain consistent regardless of gender. The social process of community identification for participants includes coming out, educating others and “inviting in.” The online community provides a forum for relationship negotiation techniques, and encouraging the embrace of non-normative sexual identity. Participants use social media to form a nascent social movement that resists normative views of sexuality and relationships in the dominant culture.
