Abstract:
This book presents the results of a corpus-based case study of diachronic English syntax. Present Day English is in a minority of European languages in not having a productive dative external possessor construction. This construction, in which the possessor is in the dative case and behaves like an element of the sentence rather than part of the possessive phrase, was in variation with internal possessors in the genitive case in Old English, especially in expressions of inalienable possession. In Middle English, internal possessors became the only productive possibility. Previous studies of th

Concentrates show you what to expect in a law exam, what examiners are looking for, and how to achieve extra marks. This chapter discusses the concept of adverse possession. An owner of an estate in land (paper owner) is under no obligation to make use of that land; mere neglect will not end ownership. However, where that land is adversely possessed by another for the required period, the paper owner will lose his title to the land. Through his acts of adverse possession, th

Lord, Errol. What it is to Correctly Respond to Reasons. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815099.003.0005.

Abstract:
This chapter defends an account of what it is to correctly respond to possessed normative reasons. This view is intimately connected to my account of possession. When one possesses a reason r to X, one is in a position to manifest knowledge about how to use r as the reason it is to X. When one responds for r, one manifests this know-how. This manifesting is spelled out in terms of essentially normative dispositions, which are dispositions that are essentially sensitive to some normative facts. The view is defended by showing how it (i) explains core data about responding for normative reasons;

Abstract:
The Importance of Being Rational systematically defends a novel reasons-based account of rationality. The book’s central thesis is that what it is for one to be rational is to correctly respond to the normative reasons one possesses. The book defends novel views about what it is to possess reasons and what it is to correctly respond to reasons. It is shown that these views not only help to support the book’s main thesis, they also help to resolve several important problems that are independent of rationality. The account of possession provides novel contributions to debates about what determin

In Roman terms, there is no real equivalent to the modern concepts of “possession”, as present-day laws use them. Possessio may describe the actual control over things that could lead to the acquisition of ownership; the control that made it possible to defend against encroachments by third parties; and the control that could result in the capacity to be sued in an ownership case. Frequently, the use of possessory elements is subordinated to property law. This chapter surveys the development of the law of possession in the late Classical period, when some attempts were made to structure the re

This chapter defends the book’s official view of possession. It starts by arguing that meeting the epistemic condition is not sufficient for possession. There are cases where one meets the epistemic condition but fails to possess because one does not appreciate the normative relevance of the fact in question. The bulk of the chapter is dedicated to spelling out what it takes to adequately appreciate normative relevance. Arguments are given against subjective reason accounts and Humean accounts. It is argued that what it is to possess a reason is to be in a position to manifest knowledge about
