With the increased use of technology in society, there are concerns about how reading is affected by the constant access to an incessantly increasing amount of information. The present study examined how reading strategies and resulting memory and comprehension is affected by the belief that information to be remembered would continue to be available. In a within- participant experiment, twenty-seven participants were instructed to read six texts, and led to believe that they would have access to some of the texts while later answering comprehension questions. The present thesis aimed to explore potential weight loss using Self- Compassion and Mindfulness. Interested in the Greek population due to increasing rates of obesity (see Panagiotakos et aI., 2004), this thesis starts with a chapter of translations of the Self-Compassion and Mindfulness scales and psychometric evaluations of the Greek versions (i.e., Chapter 2).The Greek versions were shown to be reliable and valid measures. Chapter 3 investigated the relationship of Self-Compassion and Mindfulness traits to weight differences in a stressful environment, and whether relationships of construc

Species of Prosopis (Mimosaceae), or mesquite, are native to the Americas and introduced in South Africa as agro forestry trees to provide wood, fodder and shade in the late 1800s. In the Northern Cape Province, these trees have been particularly used for their pods by local farmers and local industry. However due to Prosopis’ ability to spread rapidly there has been increasing pressure to step up control of the tree. Due to the costs associated with most control methods biological control has been singled out as the most viable control method worth pursuing. This thesis attempts to explain an

Multiple Description Coding (MDC) was fi rst formulated by A. Gersho and H. Witsenhausen as a way to improve the robustness of telephony links to outages. Lots of studies have been done in this area up to now. Another application of MDC is the transmission of an image in diff erent descriptions. If because of the link outage during transmission, any one of the descriptions fails, the image could still be reconstructed with some quality at the decoder side. In video coding, inter prediction is a way to reduce temporal redundancy. From an information theoretical point of view, one can model int

The divergence of the two superfamilies belonging to the Infraorder Catarrhini – Cercopithecoidea (Old World monkeys) and Hominoidea (apes, including humans) – is generally assumed to have occurred during the Oligocene, between 38 and 20 million years ago. Genetic studies indicate that this time period was one of active genetic evolution under strong purifying selection for catarrhine primates. This includes selective pressures on the glycoprotein galactosyltransferase 1 (GGTA1) gene and subsequent inactivation "clocked" at approximately 28 ma, possibly prior to the Cercopithecoidea/Hominoidea

Inflammation is a major contributor to postmenopausal bone loss. Various long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs), particularly those of the n-3 family, are known to have anti-inflammatory activity and may have a role in minimising postmenopausal bone loss. The objectives of this thesis were to determine whether some LCPUFAs have greater bone-protective effects than others; to identify some of the mechanisms of action of LCPUFAs in bone and to explore the possibility that combined treatment with LCPUFAs and phytoestrogens offers greater bone-protective effects than either treatment alo
