Sumida, Paulo Yukio. "Post-larval development in deep-sea echinoderms." Thesis, University of Southampton, 1998. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/42173/.

Full text
Abstract:
The post-larval phase is an essential period in the life history of marine invertebrates; vulnerable to high mortality, it ultimately influences the distribution and abundance of adult populations. The postmetamorphic ontogenesis of thirty species of deep-sea echinoderms, belonging to three classes (Ophiuroidea, Asteroidea and Echinoidea), is described using scanning electron microscopy. The life history of Ophiocten gracilis is also examined as a case study for future research on post-larval organisms. The analysis of development in ophiuroids reveals that species can be identified from a ver

Abstract:
Organisms with complex life cycles may experience diverse stressors during their development. Stressors experienced in early life stages may influence the quantity and quality of individuals in later life stages. However, it is unclear if these effects persist later in life and how they may influence population dynamics. This dissertation uses two amphibian species, the Western spadefoot toad (Pelobates cultripes) and the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) to explore how biotic and abiotic factors experienced in aquatic and terrestrial environments influence phenotype and survival. Morphometric and meristic characters for distinguishing between clupeid fish stocks were examined on specimens of post-larval and juvenile sprat and herring entering the Loughor Estuary. Temperature was the major factor influencing arrival and departure time of sprat and herring to and from the estuary. Their arrival time is species-specific. Post-larval herring arrived during May every year, when most of them had not completed metamorphosis, as compared with sprat, which arrived during July and mostly had completed metamorphosis. Abstract:
Significant seasonal variation in size at settlement has been observed in newly settled larvae of Dreissena polymorpha in Lake Constance. Diet quality, which varies temporally and spatially in freshwater habitats, has been suggested as a significant factor influencing life history and development of freshwater invertebrates. Accordingly, experiments were conducted with field-collected larvae to test the hypothesis that diet quality can determine planktonic larval growth rates, size at settlement and subsequent post-metamorphic growth rates. Larvae were fed one of two diets or starved. One diet

Abstract:
The Olympia oyster, Ostrea lurida. was overharvested in the early 20th century and is now the focus of restoration efforts in estuaries along the west coast of North America. These efforts would be aided by a better understanding of larval abundance patterns, settlement behavior, and post-settlement performance of oysters in estuaries throughout its range. In Coos Bay, Oregon, all three of these components of the oyster life cycle were investigated at multiple sites. Like adult oysters, larvae were restricted to the upper portion of the bay, although larvae were supplied to sites in the upper

I conducted a 12-month study of near-shore habitats in Lake Pontchartrain to assess spatiotemporal variation in the abundance of early life stage blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus). Collections were made using a 1 m2 throw trap and data showed that C. sapidus numbers varied over time and among sites. Two recruitment events occurred during the study. During the first recruitment in May-June, C. sapidus entered Lake Pontchartrain via the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal. In September-October, C. sapidus entered the Lake Pontchartrain via the Rigolets and Chef passes. My data suggest that C. s

Abstract:
There is much evidence supporting the idea that pelagic larvae of coral reef fishes are active participants in their dispersal and return to a reef, however, the mechanisms used to navigate are still uncertain. It has been proposed that sensory cues, such as hearing, play a role. Sound is a potentially important cue for organisms in marine environments, especially in noisy environments like coral reefs. Sensory organs, including otolithic organs, of most coral reef fish form within the first few days of life. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) technique was used to measure hearing on a wide
