Abstract:
We discuss in detail the weak field limit of f(R, 𝒢) gravity taking into account analytic functions of the Ricci scalar R and the Gauss–Bonnet invariant 𝒢. Specifically, we develop, in metric formalism, the Newtonian, Post-Newtonian (PN) and Parametrized Post-Newtonian (PPN) limits starting from general f(R, 𝒢) Lagrangian. The special cases of f(R) and f(𝒢) gravities are considered. In the case of the Newtonian limit of f(R, 𝒢) gravity, a general solution in terms of Green's functions is achieved.

Abstract:
After an introduction to theories of gravity alternative to general relativity, metric theories (Sec. 1) and the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism (Sec. 2), we define a new class of metric theories of gravity (Sec. 3). It turns out that the post-Newtonian approximation of these new theories is not described by the PPN formalism (Sec. 4); in fact, in the limit of weak field and slow motions, the post-Newtonian expression of the metric tensor contains an, a priori, infinite set of new terms and correspondingly an, a priori, infinite set of new PPN parameters. As a consequence, the parametrized post-Newtonian formulas describing the classical relativistic tests should include these new parameters, and therefore the experimental values of the classical relativistic effects should not be used to put limits only on the standard ten PPN parameters. Finally, we note that a subset of this new class of theories has the same post-Newtonian limit and value of the PPN parameters as general relativity, and therefore is automatically in agreement with the classical general-relativistic tests (Sec. 4, theory III).

Abstract:
Abstract We study the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) limit of higher-derivative-torsion Modified Teleparallel Gravity. We start from the covariant formulation of modified Teleparallel Gravity by restoring the spin connection of the theory. Then, we perform the post-Newtonian expansion of the tetrad field around the Minkowski background and find the perturbed field equations. We compute the PPN metric for the higher-order Teleparallel Gravity theories which allows us to show that at the post-Newtonian limit this more general class of theories are fully conservative and indistinguishable from General Relativity . In this way, we extend the results that were already found for F(T) gravity in previous works. Furthermore, our calculations reveal the importance of considering a second post-Newtonian (2PN) order approximation or a parametrized post-Newtonian cosmology (PPNC) framework where additional perturbative modes coming from general modifications of Teleparallel Gravity could lead to new observable imprints.

The post-Newtonian formalism is developed for hybrid f(R)-gravity. The model is tested in the weak field regime of the Solar System. Using scalartensor representation of hybrid f(R)-gravity we impose restrictions on the parameters of the theory and show that hybrid f(R)-gravity is not ruled out by the observations in the weak field limit.

Abstract:
We present a new kind of model, which we call δ Theories, where standard theories are modified including new fields, motivated by an additional symmetry ( δ symmetry). In previous works, we proved that δ Theories just live at one loop, so the model in a quantum level can be interesting. In the gravitational case, we have δ Gravity, based on two symmetric tensors, g μ ν and g ˜ μ ν , where quantum corrections can be controlled. In this paper, a review of the classical limit of δ Gravity in a Cosmological level will be developed, where we explain the accelerated expansion of the universe without Dark Energy and the rotation velocity of galaxies by the Dark Matter effect. Additionally, we will introduce other phenomenon with δ Gravity like the deflection of the light produced by the sun, the perihelion precession, Black Holes and the Cosmological Inflation.

2013 - 2014<br>In this Thesis we report a general review of Extended Theories of Gravity and the fundamental aspects of General Relativity. We show the technicality of development of field equation with respect to Newtonian, Post-Newtonian approach and the post-Minkowskian limit. We analyse also the problem of how conformally transformed models behave in the weak field limit approximation. This issue could be extremely relevant in order to select conformally invariant physical quantities. The photon deflection is considered in the framework of the Newtonian Limit of a general class of f (R, Rαβ Rαβ, RαβγδRαβγδ) - Gravity where f is an unspecific function of the Ricci scalar R, Ricci tensor squareRαβ Rαβ and Riemann tensor square RαβγδRαβγδ. Studying in the weak-field approximation - Newtonian and Post-Newtonian limit - the geodesic and Lense-Thirring processions by using the recent experimental results of the Gravity Probe B and LARES satellite and using the damping of the orbital period of coalescing stellar binary systems, we impose constraints on the free parameters of such models of Extended Theories of Gravity. In this thesis, we review some basic properties of the Einstein-aether gravity. We derive the field equations from an action and study a subclass of this theory corresponding to the Einstein-Maxwell like theory. We also show that the G&ouml<br>del type metrics are also exact solutions of this theory. Furthermore, we determine the observational constraints on the dimensionless preferred parameters of this theory using the parametrized post- Newtonian formalism. We stress that none of calculations and discussions are original in this thesis.

The comparisons of the post- Newtonian result with general relativity and solar system experiments are discussed.

This chapter embarks on a study of the two-body problem in general relativity. In other words, it seeks to describe the motion of two compact, self-gravitating bodies which are far-separated and moving slowly. It limits the discussion to corrections proportional to v2 ~ m/R, the so-called post-Newtonian or 1PN corrections to Newton’s universal law of attraction. The chapter first examines the gravitational field, that is, the metric, created by the two bodies. It then derives the equations of motion, and finally the actual motion, that is, the post-Keplerian trajectories, which generalize the post-Keplerian geodesics obtained earlier in the chapter.

Contemporary Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) packages within the communications network infrastructure have reached a thermal limit. Integrated packages involving microfluidic channels are an appealing development to improve the thermal design of future PIC packages, to significantly improve the removal of heat fluxes in order to sustain the expected enhanced data traffic growth. The Thermally Integrated Smart Photonics Systems (TIPS) project aims to develop and demonstrate a thermally enabled integrated platform that is scalable, to meet the predicted data traffic demands. Full system integration requires an integrated pumping solution, therefore a primary heat exchanger that can deliver the required thermal performance with a low pressure drop (ΔP) is needed. A channel containing a single array of cylindrical posts offers a low pressure drop, similar to a large hydraulic diameter minichannel. Local destabilization of the flow would provide heat transfer enhancement. In particular, non-Newtonian fluids have been shown to exhibit significant mixing in such configurations. Micro Particle-Image Velocimetry (μPIV) measurements were taken for Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids within this channel. Instabilities associated with the viscoelastic fluid were recorded immediately upstream of the post array. This flow exhibited almost a four-fold increase in mixing at comparable flow rates to the Newtonian fluid tested. This suggests that the Nusselt number enhancement associated with such flows could increase the heat transfer rates quite significantly in microchannels containing obstructions.
