Abstract:
- Lliterature on Taylorism has surprisingly ignored the role of its payment systems, while the results achieved on Ford's five-dollar day programme appear contradictory and sometimes isolated from the organisational change simultaneously undertaken. I seek to fill these theoretical gaps. I provide a historical analysis of the relevant features of Taylorism and Fordism and analyse a simple agency model with a linear compensation scheme to account for the observed differences in payment systems between Taylor's performance-related pay and Ford's fixed wages. I show how the ex-post observed diver

In the 1980s a growing number of books and articles utilized the terms 'post-Fordism; 'post-Taylorism ; 'flexible specialization' and 'new production concepts: This paper explores a number of common themes which have been developed under these separate titles. It is argued that many of these concepts do not represent a clear break from past theoretical traditions. Rather, they offer a restatement of many of the ideas found in Industrialism and Industrial Man (Kerr et al. 1960a). Moreover, it is argued that a number of conceptual and empirical problems exist that invalidate many of the claims m

Since the mid-1980s there has been substantial debate about changes in the nature of production systems in Europe and North America. A range of writers, operating within a paradigm of post-Fordism, contend that traditional Western manufacturing methods, based on mass markets, mass production and Taylorism, are being replaced by strategies premised on niche markets, small-batch production and the upgrading of workforce skills and autonomy. In Australia it has been argued, chiefly by Mathews, that such changes have important implications for the labour movement. In particular, the new circumstan

This article aims to develop an analytical framework for understanding the context in which a process of de-professionalisation exists within an employment culture dominated by capitalism, globalisation and inequality. It specifically focuses upon experiences arising in health, social care and education sectors typifying that found within the British Welfare State during late modernity. Different theoretical definitions are presented to introduce an argument for a multi-dimensional approach. For example de-professionalisation may cover the removal from professional control, influence, manipula

There are a number of ideological reference points from where the notion of de-professionalisation takes shape, including critiques of Neo-liberalism, Taylorism/Post-Fordism and the ideology of Life-long Learning. The argument is that any theoretical definition centres around a specific narrative and more than likely includes the notion of ‘de-skilling’ drawn from Marx’s theory of work in industrial capitalism. The chapter develops an analytical framework for examining the professionalisation/de-professionalisation nexus and highlights the corollary of different perspectives drawn from a range

What do we mean when we speak of algorithmic management? Starting from the case of digital food delivery platforms, this chapter proposes some theoretical and interpretative hypotheses regarding the introduction of algorithmic management systems. In particular, the authors argue that this management model can be described as not completely new, since it includes both elements of the industrial capitalism, based on direct and disciplinary control, and of the managerial model typical of post-Fordism, centred instead on the subsumption of subjectivity, which – by leveraging workers’ request for g
