Introduction: Post-traumatic arthritis of elbow is a crippling condition that frequently develops after a serious joint injury. The condition is characterized by pain, rigidity, and diminished functionality, considerably affecting the quality of life of those impacted. Despite advancements in surgical and conservative management, the optimal treatment strategy remains elusive. Case Report: A 31-year-old male presented to us with post-traumatic elbow arthritis with loss of function affecting his activities of daily living, 2 years post a road traffic accident. Radiographs showed a malunited rig

ABSTRACT Post-traumatic arthritis (PTA) is a frequent cause of disability following trauma of weight-bearing joints and is associated with significant physical impairment and loss of function. The development of PTA often occurs after an articular fracture. Currently, the only treatment option available to orthopaedic surgeons in the management of an acute articular fracture is anatomic fracture reduction. The complex pathway involved in the development and progression of PTA after articular injury, however, remains unknown and largely unstudied. Proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-

The purpose of this study was to develop a model of post-traumatic osteoarthritis in the palmar metacarpal condyle and to evaluate the timing of the early events following impact trauma on subchondral bone and articular cartilage. In each of 12 skeletally mature horses, an impact injury was created on the palmar metacarpal condyle of one randomly chosen limb, under arthroscopic and fluoroscopic guidance. A low to moderate level of forced exercise was instituted; and horses were evaluated clinically via lameness examinations, synovial fluid analysis, and radiographs. Macroscopic examination, mi

Current treatments for PTA range from over-the-counter medication to knee replacement; however, in the presence of obesity, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α,) are more elevated than in non-obese individuals. The role of fatty acids, obesity, and PTA has been examined, with omega-3 fatty acids showing promise as an anti-inflammatory after injury due to its ability to suppress IL-1 and TNF-α. Due t

Painful and inflamed joints result from joint trauma involving disruption of the cartilage [1]. The pathogenesis of post-traumatic osteoarthritis is not well understood but is most likely multifactorial. Other factors, such as inflammation, may be a critical precursor for post-traumatic arthritis. Transient acute synovitis and inflammation following a traumatic event can persist for months and may be representative of a serious joint injury [2]. Joint effusion aspirates from patients in the acute phase of injury have a higher level of activated leukocytes and an increased rate of reactive oxyg

Intercarpal arthrodesis is a common motion sparring procedure for post-traumatic arthritis of the wrist. Untreated scaphoid non-union or scapholunate ligament injury often leads to progressive arthritis of the wrist that can be salvaged by proximal row carpectomy (PRC), limited intercarpal arthrodesis or total wrist fusion. Most surgeons elect to perform a motion sparring procedure in lieu of total wrist fusion. PRC is favored by many because of the ease of surgery and no need to obtain bony union. However, several reports are pessimistic about the out comes of the PRC operation in the long te

Chondrocyte death, induced by impact injury (necrosis) and/or apoptotic inducers such as cytokines, and high level of nitric oxide, is important for the development of post-traumatic arthritis (PTA) [1–3]. The upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin −1 (IL-1) and Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α, is known to mediate cartilage degradation in inflammatory diseases and after trauma injury [1,2, 6–9]. IL-1 induces the degradation of proteoglycan (PG) in cartilage through NF-κB and Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK: p38, ERK and JNK) pathways [1,2,6]. IL-1 is highly upreg

Abstract Joint injuries in humans are frequent and similar to those seen in all mammalian species. The most commonly used method to study the correlation between trauma and cartilage survival (post-traumatic arthritis) has been conducted using in-vivo animal models. In a majority of these animal models a single or multiple impact was delivered to the patello-femoral joint (PFJ) using a drop tower type apparatus [1–6]. A main limitation of these models is with the drop tower itself and the impaction of a “whole joint”. A free-falling mass impacting the specimen abruptly decelerates, generating
