Abstract:
Objective: A series of sniper attacks in the Washington, DC, area left 10 people dead and three wounded. The authors examined the relationship of sniper-related television (TV) viewing, identification with victims, and peritraumatic dissociation to posttraumatic stress symptoms. Methods: Participants were 1,238 DC residents (ages 18-90, M = 41.7; 51 percent female; 68 percent White) who completed an online survey including items assessing identification, amount of TV, peritraumatic dissociation, and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Identification was measured by assessing to what extent participants identified victims as similar to themselves, a friend, or a family member. Peritraumatic dissociation and post-traumatic stress symptoms were assessed with the Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire and Impact of Event Scale-Revised. Relationships of TV viewing, identification, and peritraumatic dissociation to post-traumatic stress symptoms were examined by univariable and multivariable regressions and variable interactions. Results: Female gender and higher levels of TV viewing, identification, and peritraumatic dissociation were each related to greater post-traumatic stress symptoms. After adjusting for gender and the predictor variables, higher TV viewing was associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (B = 0.72, p 0.01, ΔR2 = 0.05). Participants with greater identification (B = 0.85, p 0.001, ΔR2 = 0.08) and peritraumatic dissociation (B = 1.58, p 0.001, ΔR2 = 0.39) reported more post-traumatic stress symptoms. Among those with both high (B = 1.19, p 0.001) and low TV viewing, identification was associated with post-traumatic stress symptoms. Among those reporting low TV viewing, this association was greater for those who experienced more peritraumatic dissociation (B = −0.09, p 0.001).Conclusions: Trauma-related TV viewing, which may stimulate identification and peritraumatic dissociation, is an important consideration in understanding development of post-traumatic stress symptoms.

Abstract:
This study aimed to examine how L1 Arabic learners incidentally acquire L2 English collocations through various input modes in academic lectures. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 87 Arabic learners studying L2 English at a Saudi university. The participants were randomly divided into six groups (5 intervention groups and one control group). An objective type multiple-choice question test was conducted in three phases: a pre-test, immediate post-test, and delayed post-test, to assess the participants' learning. Each experimental group received a specific input mode during the lecture, encountering a total of 17 English collocations. The input modes included listening, reading, reading while listening, viewing, and viewing with captions. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0, employing ANOVA tests to compare mean scores across different test types (pre-test, immediate post-test, and delayed post-test) and the five input modes. The results revealed significant improvements in form-recognition learning from reading, viewing, and viewing with captions. These findings contribute further evidence supporting the effectiveness of academic lectures and multimedia theory in facilitating the incidental acquisition of L2 collocations.

Abstract:
The study investigates the effects of authentic listening-viewing and textbook listening material on ESL university students' listening comprehension skills. The experimental and control groups, that consist of second-year university students, completed pre- and past-tests. The pre-test showed approximately the same level of listening comprehension skills in the experimental and control groups. The result of the post-test does not show a significant impact of authentic listening-viewing material on listening comprehension of the experimental group. Employing the post-questionnaire, that the experimental group filled out, we determined the challenges, such as speakers’ tempo and accents. However, students have a positive attitude to such authentic aids. These findings confirm the constant difficulties caused by implementing listening-viewing material and indicate students’ positive perception of authentic aids. The study also proves that the regular employment of authentic listening-viewing materials decreases anxiety of the experimental group and improves confidence when working on authentic videos.

Abstract:
Objectives: To investigate emotional responses to food images in women with eating disorders (EDs) and healthy controls (HCs); and in underweight individuals post weight-restoration. Methods: Women (>14 years) with ( n = 139) and without ( n = 41) an ED rated food images evoking fear, disgust and happiness on a three-visual-analogue scale. Underweight participants viewed the images at two time-points; pre- and post-weight-restoration. Results: HCs were significantly happier, less fearful/anxious prior to viewing the images compared with EDs. Negative emotional responses when viewing images were significantly greater ( p < .001) in EDs compared with HCs; however, groups did not differ in happiness. Emotional responses were not significantly different within the ED groups. At post weight-restoration, individuals were significantly less anxious/disgusted when viewing the images. Conclusions: The importance of considering emotional responses when discussing food consumption in EDs trans-diagnostically is highlighted. Weight recovery reduces negative food responses, although responses remained high in comparison to HCs.

Natural disasters and conflicts are not gender neutral. They have a different impact on women, girls, boys and men, deepening and intensifying already existing, socially constructed, cultural norms and gender roles. However, crisis represents a “turning point” that shakes balances and traditions, unbalancing the fixed social structure, leaving room for women to exit the crisis empowered, rather than wounded. A systemic integration of a gender-sensitive approach into humanitarian and disaster reliefs operations wound tackle pre-existing inequalities, ensuring an effective quality response and recover from disasters.

The EduCase recording system consists of three devices, one per lecture hall board. Each recording device records color, depth, skeletal, and audio inputs. The Post-Processor automatically processes the recordings to produce an output file usable by the Viewer, which provides a more dynamic student experience than traditional video playback systems. In particular, it allows students to flip back to view a previous board while the lecture continues to play in the background. It also allows students to toggle the professor's visibility in and out to see the board they might be blocking. The system was successfully evaluated in blackboard-heavy lectures at MIT and Harvard. We hope that EduCase will be the quickest, most inexpensive, and student-friendly lecture capture system, and contribute to our overarching goal of education for all.
by Sara T. Itani.
M. Eng.

Abstract:
This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1990, 2001) and self-study to investigate ways to further understand and facilitate the integration of holistic philosophies of education with media literacy pedagogies. As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.

Full text
Abstract:
In the twenty-first century horror television has spread across the digital TV landscape, garnering mainstream appeal. Located within a transmedia matrix, Transmedia Terrors in Post-TV Horror triangulates this boom across screen content, industry practices, and online participatory cultures. Understanding the genre within a post-TV paradigm, the book readdresses what is horror television, analysing not only broadcast TV and streaming platforms but also portals such as YouTube, Twitch.TV, and apps. The book also investigates complex digital media ecologies, blurring distinctions between niche and general audience viewing practices, and fostering new circulation pathways for horror television from around the world. Undertaking netnography, the book further offers an innovative model – abject spectrums – to empirically explore myriad audience responses to TV horror, manifesting in various participatory practices including writing, imagery, and crafts. As such, the book greatly expands what is considered horror television, its formatting and circulation, and the transmedia materiality of audience engagement.

Haines, Tasha. Redemptive Hybridism in Post-Postmodern Writing. Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781501394539.

Full text
Abstract:
From Virginia Woolf to David Foster Wallace and beyond, 'redemptive hybridism' – a new way of reading texts full of possibility and genre blending – emerges as a key trajectory for post-postmodernity. Tasha Haines investigates what she calls "redemptive dybridism" in post-postmodern writing, a paradigmatic shift characterized by possibility. In the textual production of the 21st century, Haines argues, postmodern elitism gives way to the reparative blending of high-low forms and genre collaborations. This shift invokes both intellect and soul in the act of challenging and extending the relationship between the writer, the written material, the reader and their context. By combining an innovative literary investigation with creative, auto-theoretical strategies, Haines connects with readers as she offers valuable new interpretations of texts belonging to ‘the modernisms continuum’ – from the novelistic and essayistic writing of Virginia Woolf to the paratextual fiction writing of David Foster Wallace, and in between Nathalie Sarraute, Édouard Levé and Maggie Nelson. She responds to the hybrid-and-creative theories of Deleuze and Guattari, Hassan and many others for whom form, style and content are fluid, overlapped or collaborative. And she arrives at a new way of viewing works that exemplify the liminal space of possibility, self-expression, restoration and genre blending that is Redemptive Hybridism in Post-Postmodern Writing

Abstract:
This handbook explores the cultural and religious customs concerning death, burial, and mourning in countries throughout the world and covers all the major religions. At present there are more than 190 independent countries in the world, and the funeral practices in each are closely related to the culture, history and geography of the country concerned. Matsunami examines the ways people living around the world deal with the death of a loved one, and what kind of post-mortem arrangements are made. In doing so, he provides a better understanding of the world's cultures by viewing people's individual and collective behavior when it comes to funeral customs. Scholars of comparative religion, cultural anthropology, sociology, and even funeral directors, will value this comprehensive reference.

Full text
Abstract:
Does adherence to the principles of logic commit us to a particular way of viewing the world? Or are there ways of being – ways of behaving in the world, including ways of thinking, feeling, and speaking – that ground the normative constraints that logic imposes? Does the fact that assertions, the traditional elements of logic, are typically made about beings present a problem for metaphysical (or post-metaphysical) prospects of making assertions meaningfully about being? Does thinking about being (as opposed to beings) accordingly require revising or restricting logic's reach – and, if so, how is this possible? Or is there something precious about the very idea of thinking the limits of thinking? Contemporary scholars have become increasing sensitive to how Heidegger, much like Wittgenstein, instructively poses such questions. Heidegger on Logic is a collection of new essays by leading scholars who critically ponder the efficacy of his responses to them.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter explores and develops the notion of spaces for peace in the context of women’s cooperation in post-conflict Mitrovica. It argues that understanding women’s cooperative activities as spaces for peace highlights women’s voices and agency in the constrained context of Mitrovica—a divided city where, since the end of the Kosovo conflict, ethnic/national boundaries and patriarchy have had a profound effect on everyday life. The chapter focuses on three particular actions—learning/training together, working together and travelling together—which are viewed as women’s responses to Mitrovica’s constrained context, and explores how these actions contribute to peace and peacebuilding in the city. It concludes by suggesting that viewing women’s cooperative activities as spaces for peace can be the first step to transforming the ways in which women’s empowerment initiatives are viewed, conceptualised and delivered in post-conflict contexts around the world.

Abstract:
Three-dimensional (3D) television (TV) is becoming more popular and used for entertainment than the conventional two-dimensional (2D) TV. This study conducted to examine the effect of 3D TV watching on the subjective visual fatigue and EEG data. Thirty male healthy participants (aged 31.4 + 7.1) recruited from the community. We conducted pre- and post- EEG signal collection on participants who watched the same 2D/3D movie content. Additionally, we administered a subjective visual fatigue questionnaire to the participants following the viewing task. The two-way ANOVA was used to verify significant interaction effects of 2D and 3D on before and after watching. A paired-samples t-test was performed for the mean values of subjective questionnaires results to identify significant differences between after watching 2D and 3D movie. Compared with watching 2D TV, 3D TV viewing will cause more fatigue and discomfort. A new evaluation model for 3DTV with beta waveband parameters in seven regions was established, according to the result from EEG data analysis.

Abstract:
Although the Beam Propagation and Finite Element Methods (BPM & FEM) are widely used for the analysis of optical devices, they suffer from poor handling of input and output data and are often inflexible. Physical data such as the waveguide structure and associated material parameters must be transformed into a form acceptable to the solver algorithm. A similar interface is required at the other end of the process where a set of numbers must be restructured into a form which the engineer can assimilate. These interfacing functions are known as pre-processing and post-viewing (or post-processing) respectively. Following the example set by other areas of engineering, we have integrated both the FEM and BPM with user-friendly, graphics-based pre- and post-processors, and produced design tools which combine versatility with accuracy and make the numerical techniques accessible to the device engineers.

Abstract:
This paper describes a method for the acquisition of the flying shape of spinnakers in a twisted flow wind tunnel. The method is based on photogrammetry. A set of digital cameras is used to obtain high resolution images of the spinnaker from different viewing angles. The images are post-processed using image-processing tools, pattern recognition methods and finally the photogrammetry algorithm. Results are shown comparing design versus flying shape of the spinnaker and the impact of wind velocity and wind twist on the flying shape. Finally some common rules for optimum spinnaker trimming are investigated and examined.

Abstract:
This report compares the teacher knowledge of two early career primary school teachers (drawn from a study of four teachers) as it was needed in the classroom during the teaching of statistics through investigations. The study involved video recording a sequence of four or five lessons and audio recoding post-lesson stimulated recall interviews with the teachers. These interviews were based on the teacher viewing selected episodes from the lesson videos. The results showed marked differences in the teacher knowledge of the two teachers, as analysed against a framework developed from the mathematics teacher knowledge domain and the statistical thinking domain. The conclusions and implications drawn from the results are discussed in relation to both initial (or preservice) teacher education and professional development for teachers.

Abstract:
The internet is an extraordinary source for language teaching. Set as valuable input to teaching language and culture, online films can be extensively used by language teachers to develop students' language and socio-cultural skills. The careful choice of films is made according to pedagogical objectives such as: the development of colloquial language skills, the acquisition of socio-cultural knowledge, the practice of summary skills etc. The teaching of language and culture through films or film fragments is an entertaining and motivational activity. In this manner, learning occurs and teaching is effective. Teaching Romanian for foreign students has captured people's attention in the last 10 years and its importance is increasing. More and more foreigners arrive in Romanian for various reasons, such as to further study in the Romanian language; to find a job in Romania, to obtain a degree in an European country and continue their studies abroad in Europe; to pursue a career in our country or abroad or to attend specialization programmes to work in Romania The present article introduces the importance of teaching Romanian for foreigners and covers, in its theoretical background, advantages and drawbacks of using films in the language classroom. Research in this domain covers the majority of these topics and offers examples of pre-viewing, while-viewing and post-viewing classroom activities but it doesn't offer concrete examples of online film-based lesson scenarios for teaching foreign languages, and in particular, Romanian for foreigners. That is why our article, presents a lesson scenario based on a short online Romanian film available on the website: www.cinepub.ro. This website offers plenty of films and we found it very useful to use it both as lecture inputs and homework. The article concludes that with appropriate tasks designed to achieve the teaching objectives and to be appropriate for the students' language level, films are a valuable resource which both teach and entertain.

Abstract:
The current statistical data in badminton event broadcasts primarily present score information for real-time match situations, offering limited insights into key events that influence the direction of the game. Additionally, past research has predominantly focused on providing post-game analysis for professionals, with a limited investigation into audiences' opinions on broadcasted statistical information. However, for both broadcasters and audiences, statistical data can aid in understanding the game content and enhance entertainment value. This study explores the evaluation of badminton event broadcasts by audiences with varying levels of experience and examines whether visualizing key events can enhance audience comprehension and enjoyment. This study consolidates international badminton event broadcast channels, selecting three channels based on event grades for testing. Through surveys, 30 participants were invited to participate in physical experiments, comprising 15 high-experience and 15 low-experience individuals (participants), and viewed simulated broadcast interfaces to assess their evaluations of the content. Two samples displayed scores for all games in badminton matches, while the third sample presented statistics for winning game points and the current game's score. Evaluation methods included: (1) participants are asked to explain and illustrate the game situation after watching the match; (2) participants respond to event-related questions regarding the broadcast interface, and complete the survey that included re-viewing intention, word of mouth, sport involvement, hedonic and utilitarian attitudes scales; (3) semi-structured interviews aimed at understanding participants' evaluations and suggestions for the viewing experience. Results revealed that (1) participants with high experience rated scales of re-viewing intention, word of mouth, sport involvement, hedonic and utilitarian attitudes significantly higher than low-experience participants; (2) 50% of participants accurately recorded scoreboard information, including winning player, final score, and game points. There are no significant differences between high and low-experience participants or different broadcast interfaces; (3) 80% of participants indicated that presenting scores for all games on the broadcast interface helped anticipate the match's overall direction; (4) 60% of participants preferred using the colour to highlight winning game points in the scoreboard for clearer identification of the ongoing game score; (5) 67% of participants believed trajectory information improved understanding the game; (6) 76% of participants suggested adding visual trajectory information to enhance understanding and enjoyment of the game, with 53% recommending providing this information during replays, as offering it during the game might disrupt the viewing experience. This study, by understanding audience evaluations of badminton event broadcast interfaces, provides relevant suggestions for future improvements in visualizing broadcast information to cater to fans with different levels of involvement.

Full text
Abstract:
To study the fracture behaviour of nuclear graphite, a full-field digital image correlation technique has been applied to large specimens of isotropic Gilsocarbon graphite. Optical images of the tensile surface in four-point bend tests were recorded throughout the loading history, with a 100 × 100 mm viewing area. Although crack nucleation was not observable in these raw images, the high sensitivity of digital image correlation to the small displacements allows cracks to be detected. Strain maps are derived from the displacements, and surface cracks with lengths from 1 mm can be seen due to the high effective strain that results from crack opening. Post-processing of the strain maps can track the development of every such defect. These unique observations show the distribution of cracks and their sub-critical development and interactions prior to unstable fracture. This information may be used to validate models for the effects of sample size and stress gradient on component fracture strength.

Abstract:
The November 25, 1988, moment magnitude 5.9 (Mw) Saguenay earthquake is one of the largest eastern Canadian earthquakes of the 20th century. It was preceded by a magnitude (MN) 4.7 foreshock and followed by very few aftershocks considering the magnitude of the main shock. The largest aftershock was a magnitude (MN) 4.3 event. This Open File (OF) Report presents a variety of documents (including original and interpreted felt information, images, newspaper clippings, various engineering reports on the damage, mass movements). This OF updates the report of Cajka and Drysdale (1994) with additional material, including descriptions of the foreshock and largest aftershock. Most of the felt report information come from replies of a questionnaire sent to postmasters in more than 2000 localities in Canada and in the United States. Images of the original felt reports from Canada are included. The OF also includes information gathered in damage assessments and newspaper accounts. For each locality, the interpreted information is presented in a digital table. The fields include the name, latitude and longitude of the municipality and the interpreted intensity on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale (most of which are the interpretations of Cajka and Drysdale, 1996). When available or significant, excerpts of the felt reports are added. This OF Report also includes images from contemporary newspapers that describe the impact. In addition, information contained in post-earthquake reports are discussed together with pictures of damage and mass movements. Finally, a GoogleEarth kmz file is added for viewing the felt information reports within a spatial tool.
