Abstract:
Chapter 4 considers the posthumous premieres of 1928 and their performance in a high-profile concert commemorating the tenth anniversary of the composer’s death. The event sparked fevered debate in the press and occasioned a surge of vitriolic commentary. By performing unpublished works from Debussy’s student years as well as his final incomplete work, the Ode à la France, the concert program and ensuing controversy got to the heart of what was now at stake in the composer’s posthumous reputation: what should be commemorated and who had the authority to decide. The struggle over these two questions led to numerous exchanges in the press and culminated in a lawsuit that pitted the composer’s widow, Emma, against a committee formed of Debussy’s closest friends and colleagues. Whereas the previous chapters highlighted the antagonisms between the pre- and postwar generations, Chapter 4 turns its focus to the fissures within the debussyists themselves.

Owens, W. R. Bunyan’s Posthumously Published Works. Edited by Michael Davies and W. R. Owens. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199581306.013.17.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of sixteen works left in manuscript at Bunyan’s death. After giving an account of the circumstances of their posthumous publication, the chapter discusses their dates of composition and why Bunyan did not publish them, emphasizing particularly the context of severe persecution in which they were written. Most originated as sermons, and the chapter considers Bunyan’s style and rhetoric as a preacher. It also discusses Bunyan’s use of typology in interpreting the Bible, particularly in his commentary on the first ten chapters of Genesis: one of the most ambitious of the posthumously published works. Finally, it argues that these works reveal a great deal about the development of millenarianism in Bunyan’s thinking, and about changes in his political views.

Walden, Joshua S. Epilogue. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190653507.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
The book’s epilogue explores the place of musical portraiture in the context of posthumous depictions of the deceased, and in relation to the so-called posthuman condition, which describes contemporary changes in the relationship of the individual with such aspects of life as technology and the body. It first examines Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo to view how Bernard Herrmann’s score relates to issues of portraiture and the depiction of the identity of the deceased. It then considers the work of cyborg composer-artist Neil Harbisson, who has aimed, through the use of new capabilities of hybridity between the body and technology, to convey something akin to visual likeness in his series of Sound Portraits. The epilogue shows how an examination of contemporary views of posthumous and posthuman identities helps to illuminate the ways music represents the self throughout the genre of musical portraiture.

Caldwell, Lesley, and Helen Taylor Robinson, eds. The Collected Works of D. W. Winnicott. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med:psych/9780190271428.001.0001.

Abstract:
Volume 10, Therapeutic Consultations in Child Psychiatry, a posthumous publication of twenty-one case histories of children and adolescents taken over a ten-year period, is introduced by the Florentine analyst and child and adolescent psychiatrist, Marco Armellini. It concerns the application of psychoanalysis to child psychiatry. The technique in these reported cases usually takes the form of what Winnicott describes as the Squiggle Game. Winnicott states that what happens in the game and in the whole interview depends on the use made of the child’s experience, including the material that presents itself. In these consultations, unlike what happens in ongoing intensive analytic cases, interpretation of the unconscious is not the main feature. The backbone of all the work described here is the theory of the emotional development of the individual.
