Full textPostmodernism is the state of culture of the contemporary world and postmodernity the corresponding historical period. During the 1970's, postmodern theories enjoyed a considerable development at the time when the lebanese civil war (1975-1990) erupted. Ilyas Khuri, a lebanese author born in 1948, experienced violence and defeats. His novels express the fragmentation of the country and the narration. Postmodernism in literature proves to be a paradigm to interpret his writings. Our approach helps to reveal the central role of engagement and values despite the collapse of big narratives. It enlights the underlying tensions of his novels. The interaction between text and context helps to grasp the change process of his literary writings. Ilyas Khuri literary works bring therefore distinctive answers to current questions

Full textPostmodernism and neo-liberalism is often thought of as two opposite conceptions of the reality and the world. This thesis takes on a critical view of this assertion and the main purpose was to perform a correlation between postmodernism and neo-liberalism. With different theoretical assumptions about constructions of thoughts, agency and structure and the welfare-state a theoretical framework was created. According to this framework the two isms were correlated to each other and the welfare-state to see if there where similarities or dissimilarities between the isms. The assumptions of this thesis are that there are correlations between postmodernism and neo-liberalism in the constructions of thoughts, namely similar view on epistemology. The two isms also show similarity between each other towards the foundations upon which the modern welfare-state rests. This is mainly manifested in their common view of the institutions of the welfare-state, which the isms both finds problematic. This results in a mutual problematic view on positive freedom, the foundation of legitimacy, the means and economic democracy as they are manifested in a given welfare-state. However, the motive for criticism rests mostly on different justifications for the two isms. Anyhow, their views share doubts about the legitimacy of the welfare-state in common. This even though postmodernism is partly a result of the welfare-politics. This thesis also shows why postmodernism and neo-liberalism at least in a theoretical perspective can not continue to develop side by side.

Full textThe concepts of dystopia and postmodernism have taken a new dimension for the past two decades. These conceptshave been explored in multiple studies from both literary and historical viewpoints, to name but these two areas thathave revealed other perspectives, which, to our knowledge, have not yet been addressed. This is the case, for example,of the relationship between dystopia and ruins. The present work explores the concepts of dystopia and ruins as theyappear in the three books (Riddley Walker (1980) by Russell Hoban, Cloud Atlas (2004) by David Mitchell and TheBook of Dave (2006) by Will Self) in the light of contemporary events and in connection with postmodernism. Thiscorpus was used to discover the links between dystopia and postmodernism through the aesthetic, ethical, poetic andpolitical values of ruins, the ubiquity of which brought us to consider the dystopian works as a depiction of the world inwhich we live. The present study has also helped highlight the destructive behavior of Man in relation to the notion ofprogress that is constantly questioned, thus becoming more of an illusion than a reality because of scenes of violencemainly illustrated by the two World Wars with the Shoah and the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,as well as the use of chemical weapons, commonly called mass destruction weapons. Besides being a bridge betweendystopia and postmodernism, ruins stand as witnesses of Man’s sinister past toward which they direct contemplatorswhile reminding them of the vanity of their lives and the evanescence of any existence. The ubiquity of the ruinsrelentlessly plunges survivors and contemplators into a melancholy supplemented by the trauma associated to thefeeling of loss and the threat of a repetition of the past. The ruin thus becomes a form of expression, a language forpostmodern dystopias and through it, the departed speak. The traces of what has been have thus become media through

Thus in this thesis, i intend to point cut the immanent structure and the essential characteristics of this subject by applying the rfisfchods of 1. Archetype-form, and 2. Idealtype to initiate the research. This method is developped from the theories of Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Durand and M. Maffesoli. Therefore, 3 archetype-forms (which each partially represented some feature of the nomadism in question) 1. Ulysse - voyage - "egarement", 2. Don Quichotte - rootless wandering, 3. Rimbaud - perpetual escape and Baudelaire - as an archetype-form par excellence with his 3 qualities 1. "Hundred moves, never a trip !" (in J. P. Sartre's words), 2. Trens, 3. "avarice onaniste" and then the road-movie as an idealtype (in the postnodsrn context). This subject will be analysed from 3 standpoints 1. Jack Kerouac and the "beat generation", for its textual justification ; 2. John Ford and this western - archetype of roadmovie, 5. Wim Wenders - apogee of . "Blade runner" - a road-movie's metamorphosis in which we uncover the same behaviours and trajectories of "homo-vagabundus" and "homo-noctambulus" from Baudelaire to blade runner in a symbolic, closed and nocturnal space which reveals further relationships between man and image. This would be at the same time an alternative communication form, one of the postmodernity's "drift" (derive) and "perverse effects"

Full textThis dissertation is a monograph on Colson Whitehead's fiction and nonfiction from the perspective African American literary tradition. It raises an aesthetic and political question: is Whitehead a postracial writer? In The Intuitionist (1999), the rivalry between black characters and the game of camouflage undermine racial identity politics. The deconstruction of the myth celebrating the sacrifice of a relentless worker desacralizes the black hero of John Henry Days (2001). Apex Hides the Hurt (2006) offers a reflection on language, its relationship to power and racial belonging. The second part explores the paradox of a “postblack” identity with regards to racial stereotypes in Sag Harbor (2009). Finally, the last part signals an effort to redefine the human in Zone One (2011) where an invasion of zombies enables the transcendence of the Black/White binary construct in a post-apocalyptic world. The analysis relies on postmodern criticism since the notion of “race” and racism are addressed through the irony of a text that dramatizes and plays with the idea of a postracial American society

Full textBy adopting a phenomenological approach to analyze the essence of fashion like a transitory process of incorporation, my work entitled "Torn silk. Essay on the Fashion as frame of mind of the postmodernity" shows how, on the basis of sociology of the day-to-day, we can release a network of senses by analyzing the various courses of social actors as varied as the Valentino, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Paul Gaultier, John Galliano dressmakers, or the sciptwriter of Russian ballets Leon Bakst. From the set of themes of the mirror and its various reflective points, our study revisits the topics of Narcisse, the witches, the "femmes fatales" and the Russian Ballet in France to show the various modifications which the Fashion underwent and to try to seize its frame of mind. Various diagrams of comprehension of the new sociological and psychological values enable us to refine our approach and to delimit another delimitation as regards semiological analysis and phenomenology of the phenomenon of Fashion and anti-fashion

Full textWe mean to analyse the principal traits of sixty dream sequences and to evaluate their influence in American cinema from 1939 (The Wizard of Oz, Victor Fleming) to 2001 (Mulholland Drive, David Lynch). We suppose that a dream sequence contains the basis for a horror and fantasy fiction, which rests on an uncanny situation (self-division due to sleep), on an uncanny style (a so-called fantastic condensation and displacement) and finally on the horror and fantasy genre. Classical cinema often draws a clear line between the horror and fantasy of dreams and the rest of the film, thanks to a series of narrative conventions (the dream can be seen as a lesson, or a psychoanalyst will explain it rationally, as in Spellbound, Hitchcock, 1945). That ethical dream allows classic films to end on a reassuring reality, after experiencing the uncanny of the dream sequence. However, at the end of the sixties, the uncanny of the dream sequence seems to have spread to the whole film, thanks to key films such as Vertigo (Hitchcock, 1958) and Rosemary’s Baby (Roman Polanski, 1968). The telling of dreams can be misleading and dreams often become real set-ups. A second step in that change takes place with contemporary films. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) allows dreams to find their place in the whole film thanks to the key figure that Freddy Krueger represents. And David Lynch’s films often blur the line between dream and reality. The influential horror and fantasy of dreams in those contemporary films enables to consider a dubious reality from a new perspective

Full textThe post-modernity can be explained by existential myths making manifest convictions and representations of the contemporary humanity. The anthropological approach has been accomplished from a symptom, the drug addiction, which reveals something wrong about the social life. In front of this disease the society is disturbed and produces some reaction to keep the cohesion in the community. The research consists in analysis of three groups of discourse: one about 52 drug addicted letters, one about the political speech in 1986 about the struggle against the toxical dependence and one other about the economical speech: publicity. . . The structural method according to A. J. Greimas makes conspicuous the quest of value object. The play of the binding operating on the individual and representations depending of them. The psycho-analysis approach fills up the qualitative approach in order to notice the triad of the family, first element of the social group

Full textThis study analyses the impact of postmodernism on the development of a new style of writing in post U. S. S. R. , it discuses the role of social political changes, the specificity of U. S. S. R. Modernism, as well as the influence of poetical postmodernism on the post-meta-narrative. Postmodernism would appear to be a logical development in Russian literature and whilst retaining its specific traits, parallels the West. When examining the origins of postmodern Russia, we try to estimate the value of official literature paralled with the development of a new style of writing. In order to help us decide how to categorize 'such and such' postmodern works on post U. S. S. R. Literature, we examine the criteria which enables us to qualify a postmodern text. By demonstrating the limits of this approach this work underlines the absence of a pertinent definition, and proposes to address postmodernism like a 'behaviour', a 'style of writing' which characterises the production of contemporary Russia
Sáez, Villarino Alberto. "La narrativa de Rodrigo Fresán y la vertebración de una poética afterpop." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/672926.
Full textThis study analyses the work of the Argentinian writer Rodrigo Fresán from an omnimode perspective that considers and questions the relevance of Contemporary cultural behaviors, specifically the impact of mass media in his narrative. This thesis investigates the implications of his work based on three 21st Century factors: the omnipresence of new technologies, affective distancing and the imposition of a superficial lifestyle. With the aim of providing demonstrative clarity, this work is divided into two key parts: the first one, carries a revision of the theorical framework that allows the consolidation of a new narrative whose goal is to eliminate the barrier between the highbrow and lowbrow culture concept. This new literature, coined Afterpop o mutant, is closer to a more current aesthetic where image comes before text by using an oversaturation of references and Pop motives to nourish the tale with great visually explicit allusions. The second part examines how Fresán uses all these Afterpop resources when creating his fictional work by implementing three strategies: 1. Theme: the way in which the Argentinian writer links all his work to the concept of memory. 2. Procedural: the use of different resources by the author in the construction of his referential universe. 3. Theoretical: the essays that support this narrating style and that make Fresán a referent of this new literature. Finally, this study proves how Fresán’s work surpasses the hegemonic model represented by the great Hispano-American Boom novel, and updates it to provide more closeness and honesty with the current reader. To achieve that, the writer does not only resorts to Pop iconography and multidisciplinary eclecticism, but also to Contemporary North American writers such as David Foster Wallace, Thomas Pynchon or Philip Roth. With this, he shifts to a narrative that endorses a Postmodern aesthetic.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of using a postmodern reading strategy for Afrikaans poetry, in particular that type of poetry which, following Linda Hutcheon, I will call historiographic metapoetry. The investigation consists of four phases. Firstly, in order to implement Hutcheon's model, cognisance will be taken of the theory of postmodernism (chapters 1- 3), particularly with regard to poetry, since the latter is apparently a marginalised genre in this theorisation. The second phase of the investigation encompasses a discussion of the discourse on postmodernism and poetry in America, the NetherlandsIFlanders and in Afrikaans (chapters 4-6, respectively). Attention is given to matters such as the developmental history of postmodernism, theorising on postmodern poetry and the practice of anthologising. The third phase bridges the gap between research on postmodernism and that on historiographic metapoetry (chapter 7). The focus will be on Pirow Bekker's poem "Apollo Smintheus", with specific attention being given to the representation of the event (the journey of Jonas de la Guerre into the hinterland in 1664) in the journal texts and other historiographic sources. Hutcheon's distinction between event and fact will also be adopted in the analysis. The last phase of this study is an application of Hutcheon's model to Wilma Stockenstrëm's poem, Die heengaanrefrein, a self-reflexive text on the arrival of the Huguenots in South Africa in 1688 (chapters 8-12). As an introduction to the discussion of the text, the problematising of various types of borders in the poem is examined. This is followed by an analysis of extracts from Die heengaanrefrein with reference to four matters that are, according to Hutcheon, central to postmodern theory and practice. These are: intertextuality, parody and the discourses of history; the problem of reference; the subject and the representation of subjectivity; and lastly ideological implications and political double-coding. The discussion of Die heengaanrefrein is supplemented with shorter discussions of other texts, for example, George H. Weideman's "Kieselguhr-kleim", two short poems from Breyten Breytenbach's Soos die so and P.J. Philander's poems "Die klippe praat" and "Genesis". In Chapter 13, the final chapter, the findings are summarised and Hutcheon's model is evaluated.

Full textThe purpose of this doctorate thesis consists in theorizing the "post"-modern modernization of prevailing social relations from a double standpoint - an anatomy of current transformations of contemporary capitalism and a critique of "post"-modern concepts connected to this modernization. Beginning from a concept of modernity as an analytical determination of capital, the specific object of this study concerns advanced capitalist modernity, a global experience that characterizes the third capitalist transition ("post"-modern phase). The term of "flexible accumulation" refers to the social structure of "post"-modern modernization whereas the regime of ideological restructuring concerns the emergence of new ideological matrixes (the firm, the market, the ethos of "post"-modern individuality) as new strategically programs of modernization. The methodological concern of the analysis of "post"-modern capitalism, both as a theory of the ongoing process of modernization and as a critique of "post"-modern concepts consists in underlining the new possibilities for collective class and mass action

Full textMethodologically rooted in the paradigm of the constructivism and the complex thought, the research work reassesses the history of the discontinued thought, characterized by epistemological ruptures. It shows that each of them has been both a dialogic and a progress but also a regression for the human spirit. We refer to that of the historical modernity (around XVII century called “the Cartesian moment” by Foucault), that of the Enlightenment, the Moderns, the post or the hypermodernity. So, this work finds its theoretical anchorage, including its hypothesis, in these different ruptures. How does modernity allow questioning, the moderns’ abstract and Universalist humanism by opening coming views which structured the professional teaching ethic? The first three parts will enlighten the emergence of the issue, scope the skates of the new ethic and sign another educational paradigm, taking into account the current issues and trying to understand what for ages, structured the traditional teaching ethic. The last two parts make a bent and flashback towards former humanism and stoician, having a look both at the paradigm of the tale and the value it sets to the topological, creative, poetic and imaginary dimension. That is the starting point of the results of this research and its four teachables around which have been articulated the new landmarks structuring that new professional teaching ethic heard as “conatus”, a being attention and style

Full textThis dissertation comprises a study of the postmodernist tendencies in Wilma stockenstrom's poetry text Die heengaanrefrein (1989). It is argued that the postmodernist text carries with it certain political implications, among which are an interrogation of the way in which history is represented, as well as an interrogation of the ways in which each literary text can be read as a rewriting of existing, or precursor texts. It is further argued that the interrogation of historical representations opens up links between the postmodern debate and postcolonial discourse. This is especially pertinent when reading literary texts from a former colony such as South Africa, and specifically a text which focuses on an event which forms part of the country's colonial history, that being the arrival at the Cape of the Huguenots in 1688-89. Finally it is argued that this postmodernist text, by way of intertextual references, not only implies a rewriting of colonial perspectives on history, but also a rewriting of a literary history, thereby contributing to the decolonisation of the Subject.

Full textDissertation of TURARBEKOVA Laura Nomadic Limit. The problem of method of Gilles Deleuze is dedicated to the problems of method in the work of Deleuze, its theoretical and historico-philosophical foundations, as well as to the transformation of its method in theorizing and practices of the contemporary authors belonging to the different deleuzians schools. The author assumes therefore to study deleuzian method under three aspects to which are dedicated the reciprocal parts of work: the historico-philosophical aspect of its thought, and its methodological foundations, which includes at least two important points, the criticism of methodological techniques (Plato, Kant, Hegel) and of the loan of methodological techniques (Hume, Kant, Bergson, Nietzsche); properly theoretical aspect or transformation commits that the theory of method received in properly deleuzian interpretation; finally, the aspect of the interpretation of its theory of method in the current which some name contemporary"contemporary deleuzianisme". The topics of nomadism and of border serve for explaining themechanism of the general technique of this original method

Full textWhat does the term “postmodern” mean? And above all, what were the forces that changed the way we used it? This work argues that beyond being just an inadequate semantical object, an empty signifier, the term “postmodern” is worth studying as it helps us identify some of the theoretical forces which shaped the end of the 20th century. In that respect, it offers a fitting lens to analyse the reconfiguration of western Marxism in the English-speaking world, the conflicts within the Anglo-Saxon Left at the university level and the regeneration of various streams of critical theory in the United Kingdom as well as in the United States. Taking a transdisciplinary stance, this work studies the emergence and the dissemination of that signifier along a transatlantic axis, the major interpretations that were made about it as well as the often conflicting ways it was used. To chart the intellectual history of that era, our historicist approach will take us to the debates around the modernist controversy in the US in the 1960s and 1970s, the involvement of Jean-François Lyotard and Jürgen Habermas and especially the contributions of Fredric Jameson, Zygmunt Bauman and Stuart Hall in the course of the 1980s and 1990s. Borrowing from the fields of literary theory, political sociology and cultural studies, this work takes into account the combination of theoretical, affective and political dimensions in order to best identify the ideological and institutional strategies at play behind this chapter of the social history of ideas. Being essentially a historical sociology of a transnational, intellectual space, this study explores the various paths that led to the construction of this postmodern moment so that we understand better what was truly behind this intellectual effervescence

Full textThe last decades of the XXth century and the first of the XXIth are of paramount importance in the cultural definition of the Mexican borderland identity. Actually, they epitomize most of the central postmodern symbols: the end of the nationalist ideologies, the rise of a massive industrial culture, the deconstruction of the former relationship between Mexico and the USA. The literature seems to reach a new definition of identity, space, History and storytelling. In this perspective, Baja California’s writing production is quite a good sample: well-separated from Mexico City’s cultural world, it has built an internal system of values and a publishing network of its own, dedicated to the border and its universe. This work intends to map out and define the main aspects of Baja California’s last forty years of literary creation

Full textOne of the decisive factors that has led to the election of Vattimo as the subject of this work is the variety of themes dealt with by the writer: few areas of human experience are exempt from analysis via the reflections of weak thought. Politics, religion, ethics, aesthetics, human rights, or naturalism, limited by the critique of objectivity linked to violence, are developed by the Italian thinker through the prism of declination. Vattimo is, undoubtedly, one of the most significant exponents of Postmodernity. One of the points to be treated is the concept of modern reason, following the path mapped by thinkers such as Nietzsche or Heidegger, reinterpreted by Vattimo with total freedom. This concept of reason has been connected, historically, with ideals of progress and welfare; Vattimo criticises the concept from a postmodern point of view. The absence of a strong rationality, in the foundational sense, means that we need to work with interpretation, with a plurality of perspectives, with hermeneutics being especially relevant as a new ‘philosophical community’. The central point in the question of fundamental philosophical themes will consist of the appropriate comprehension and description of the diagnosis of the epoch undertaken by Vattimo. We aim to offer a clear and synthetic revision of the weak thought system as presented by the Italian philosopher. This includes as much an historical criticism of that thought which employs a strong notion of rationality to accede to the fundaments it requires, as well as the ideas that weak thought may offer, based on the rejection of objectivity and the possibility of emancipation derived from the same. The thematic objectives we aim to explore, are, in synthesis, threefold: the description of the influences on Vattimo, the definition of weak thought and the hermeneutics of the work of Vattimo, and the development of the most significant characteristics of the ethical, political, religious and aesthetic approaches of Vattimo.

Full textBaroque, neo-baroque and postmodernism are subject to many vague and sometimes contradictory definitions which need to be revisited and completed. Yet, one of them offers an interesting starting point to the present study : the baroque corresponds to the rise of harmony and the neo-baroque to its sudden disruption (Gilles Deleuze in L epli, Leibniz et le Baroque [1988]). Thus, the baroque is characterised through the illusory revelation and shiny exhibition of a harmonius surface. In other words, it is nothing but a trompe-l'oeil façade. The neo-baroque, on the other hand, acts as a breaking element anxious to themselves in Jeanette Winterson's postmodern novels ? What kind of thematic and textual excesses as well as "anamorphotic" distorsions are to be fpound? How are predominant motifs like the visible, the grotesque and the imaginary formed, deformed and reformed ? Is the deconstruction followed by any kind of reconstruction in progress ? And, if it is so, can it be seen as a new literary era ? All these questions will be dealt with and meticulously analysed in the light of six of eight novels published by the author : The Passion (1987, John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize), Sexing the Cherry (1989, E. M. Forster Award), Written on the body (1993), Art and Lies (1994), Gut Symmetries (1997) et The Powerbook (2000). Oranges are not the only fruit (1985) - more an autobiography than a novel - and Boating for beginners (1985) - more a comic strip than a novel - have not been selected

Full textThe rise of a culture industry represents a critical step in societal historyand indicates a radical reshaping of the realm of imagination and of daily life. In this new techno-social landscape, we observe a resurgence of political action and a progressive transfiguration of its status, language and content. This research focuses first on existing relationships between television and politics, then tracks the mutations of those relationships as precipitated by the advent of digital culture. Their current manifestation attains andsurpasses the historical trajectory of the 20th century avant-garde, in further establishing a realm of imagination separate from the existing games, aesthetics and emotions of experience. One great attribute of the postmodern realm of imagination is found in the multiplicity of communities and in their powerful communication; these "communicracies" are replacing the democracy and its obsolete political model before our very eyes
