Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) represent one of the longest wartime deployments in the history of the American military. To date, 1.6 million American military members have deployed. Of these, an estimated 300,000 have returned with a mental health condition, such as depression or PTSD. The Department of Defense has established a robust screening program to identify and track deployment-related physical and psychiatric illnesses. The Post-Deployment Health Reassessment (PDHRA) is a primary tool to identify physical and psychiatric risk follo

<p>Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common, chronic, and associated with greater risk of postoperative mortality in veterans. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to determine if elective outpatient surgery had a persistent and deleterious effect on the physical or mental health of veterans, and also to explore factors that contributed to postoperative health change in this population. A longitudinal, mixed method, quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group study was conducted. Physical and mental health, depressive symptom severity, posttraumatic symptom severity, an

Abstract:
There is an increase in the prevalence of physical symptoms in military veterans who have deployed to combat zones compared to those who have not been deployed. These symptoms can be distressing, disabling, and negatively impact quality of life. Current paradigms regarding the effects of traumatic deployment exposures on military personnel tend to consider non-specific physical symptoms (that are not due to injury) as simply a comorbidity of psychological disorder following trauma, rather than independent sequelae. For example, the diagnostic criteria for a condition specifically caused by tra

The present study was conducted to help understand the impact of living with multiple sclerosis (MS), an unpredictable, chronic illness that is widely known to have a large influence on psychosocial functioning, mental health, and life satisfaction (Motl & Gosney, 2007; Weiner, 2004). Recent research has begun to position certain chronic illnesses, such as MS, as traumatic events that influence mental health in both beneficial and detrimental ways. Thus, the present study investigated the positive and negative consequences of centralizing one’s identity within their MS experiences as related t

Highly evident is the increased incidence of PTSD within the violence stricken communities in South Africa. PTSD among black youths is so high that it can be described as an epidemic. Considerable empirical work has investigated theoretically-driven predictions about the distinctive nature of intrusive memory (IM) phenomena in PTSD. Recently, there has been increasing recognition that intrusive remembering may also play an important role in depression. The accompanying findings have been interpreted as indicating that IMs in depression and PTSD exhibit a large degree of overlap. However, much of the IM research in depression to date has been limited by a range of methodological issues (Brewin, Gregory, Lipton, & Burgess, 2010; Newby & Moulds, 2011). This dissertation attem
