Abstract:
Immanuel Kant is a philosopher who successfully defines ethicsin terms of moral imperatives, not in terms of efforts to attain happiness. He also proposes a rational metaphysics as opposed to the speculativemetaphysics. In the context of rational metaphysics, Kant leads his moralphilosophy to religion, even though the latter is not directly put as thefoundation of the former.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A claim, derived from psychoanalytic theory, which postulates that the religion, philosophy, and personality of Hindus are related to anal-erotic impulses, was examined. English college students (48 Hindus, 97 Muslims, 63 Protestants, and 54 of other religions) were administered a questionnaire on anal personality traits. Mean scores for each group were computed and comparisons drawn between groups. Both Hindu and Muslim religious groups displayed significantly more anal personality traits than did the Protestants and the ‘other religions’ group. Further, similar item endorsements were found for the Hindu and Muslim groups. The hypothesized claim relating Hindus and anal-eroticism was accepted.

Abstract:
The article discusses the ideas of famous religious scholars, the founders of religious studies P. D Chantepie de la Saussaye and C. Tiele. Their work may serve as an illustration of the process of separation of religious studies from theology. Despite the fact that both Tiele and Saussaye were graduates of theological departments, they were one of the most radical advocates for the separation of religious studies from theology. Both Saussaye and Tiele advocated the creation of a new way of studying of religion based on the principles of comparative analysis and the idea of equality of religions. At the same time, their religious projects implicitly contain the legacy of the theological worldview - the anti-reductionism they postulate as the basis for understanding and studying religion. Chantepie de la Saussaye believed that the project of the studying religion should help to translate Christian ideas into the languages of other cultures and religions. Saussaye not only introduced the phrase “the phenomenology of religion” into the history of thought, but also outlined the main prospects for its future development: the isolation of religious phenomena, anti-reductionism, the question of the center of religion. Tiele stressed the importance of a comparative analysis of various religions, based on this method, he sought to reform and transform the old theological guidelines.

AbstractAfter identifying contrasting formulations of the practical postulates of reason in Kant's second critique, I analyse the context of each formulation, showing both how the postulate of the ‘possibility’ of God is consistent with Kant's understanding of a significant transition arising from practical needs as well as how the postulate of the existence of God can be seen as a ‘practical belief’ acting out a ‘hope’. My goal is to re-examine Kant's view of the relation between the practical and theoretical employments of reason in order to distinguish clearly between what Kant sees asrequiredof the moral believer as opposed topermitted.

Abstract:
Przedmiotem analizy jest dokument Papieskiej Komisji Biblijnej „Interpretacja Biblii w Kościele”. Jest on najpierw odczytany w kontekście odnowy biblijnej, jaka miała miejsce w Kościele katolickim w XX wieku, w szczególności w związku z konstytucją Dei Verbum Soboru Watykańskiego II. W konsekwencji adhortacja stwarza nowe możliwości animacji biblijnej duszpasterstwa, rozwijając i pogłębiając postulaty wysunięte wcześniej w dokumencie „Interpretacji Biblii w Kościele”.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines three anthropological theories explaining how religion has evolved and continues to evolve. They are: commitment theory, which postulates that religion is a system of costly signaling that reduces deception and creates cooperation within groups; cognitive theory, which postulates that religion is the manifestation of mental modules that have evolved for other purposes; and ecological regulation theory, which postulates that religion is a master control system regulating the interaction of human groups with their environments. An assessment of the success of the theories is offered. The idea that the biological evolution of the capacity for religion is based on the group selection rather than individual selection is rejected as unnecessary. The relationship between adaptive systems and culturally transmitted sacred values is examined cross-culturally, and the three theories are integrated into an overall gene-culture view of religion that includes both the biological evolution and the cultural evolution of behavioral systems.

Abstract:
The systemic transformation initiated by the Roundtable talks of 1989 made it necessary for Poland to amend its constitution, including the regulations concerning the freedom of conscience and religion. It was natural for churches and religious organisations, including the Catholic Church, to participate in the constitutional debate. The study, reflecting only the Catholic Church’s official positions, presents issues concerning the Catholic Church’s position on religious freedom in the individual dimension, that is, the freedom of conscience and religion. The Conference of the Polish Episcopate’s 1990-1997 positions on religious freedom in the individual dimensions contained some of the most important aspects of the teaching of the Second Vatican Council. These represented the basis of the Episcopate’s position in the several-year-long debate on the desired model of the state. The constitutional guarantees of religious freedom contained in the article 53 (freedom of conscience and religion) should be seen as a compromise between the principles of liberal ideology and the teachings of the Vaticanum II.

Abstract:
The three great monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam — the subject matter of this survey — have several distinctive marks in common: they postulate the belief in and worship of God; they each have holy scriptures and other canonical texts and vest authoritative interpretations or applications thereof with binding force; each designates a class of officials or functionaries to preserve and propagate the faith; each seeks to imbue its religious, ethical and legal norms into the daily lives of individuals and communities; and none suffers dissidents from within. In addition there are, at least in Christianity and Islam, certain fundamental dogmata (for example, the Holy Trinity in Christianity, the divine prophecy of Muhammad in Islam) which everybody is duty-bound to believe. In each religion, ancient or medieval scholars of authority have compiled lists of articles of faith, the dissent from which by any individual coreligionist is proscribed. It will be shown that these lists are not necessarily exhaustive: the possibilities of dissidence are virtually unlimited.

Solarz, Anna M. "Religion and International Relations in the Middle East as a Challenge for International Relations (IR) Studies." Religions 11, no. 3 (March 24, 2020): 150. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/rel11030150.

Full text
Abstract:
This article addresses the search for religion’s “suitable place” within International Relations (IR), taking as a starting point the social changes in the world (“reflexive modernity”) and the postulated “Mesopotamian turn” in IR. The assumption is that religion is present at each level of IR analysis in the Middle East and, thanks to that, more and more at the international system level. This presence of religion serves to undermine one of the basic assumptions lying at the heart of the modern international order (and therefore also IR), i.e., the so-called “Westphalian presumption”. The author, inter alia, emphasizes how more attention needs to be paid to the “transnational region” constituted by the Middle East—in association with the whole Islamic World. A second postulate entails the need for a restoration of the lost level of analysis in IR, i.e., the level of the human being, for whom religion is—and in the nearest future, will remain—an important dimension of life, in the Middle East in particular. It can also be noted how, within analysis of IR, what corresponds closely to the level referred to is the concept of human security developed via the UN system. The Middle East obliges the researcher to extend considerations to the spiritual dimension of security, as is starting to be realized (inter alia, in the Arab Human Development Reports). It can thus be suggested that, through comparison and contrast with life in societies of the Middle East as it is in practice, religion has been incorporated quite naturally into IR, with this leaving the “Westphalian presumption” undermined at the same time. The consequences of that for the whole discipline may be considerable, but much will depend on researchers themselves, who may or may not take up the challenge posed.

Abstract:

What is going to be read focuses on the study of the reasons which drive people to decide to join in the Catholic Charismatic Renovation. It involves an interdisciplinary discussion on the understanding of the process the subject goes through in the joining in dynamics. It is, therefore, with the instruments from the social sciences and psychology, as well as the Freudian psychoanalyses, that this work is achieved, understanding that the categories of this theoretical approach complement each other in the understanding of the joining in process in its full length. The conscious and unconscious subjectivity supporting the joining in and the new ethical posture, consequence of the process, constitute the study’s driving force. Thus, the dialectic man in Freud and Durkheim, in his partiality of fragility and might, determines the empirical work and the analytical conclusions. The subjective motivation is discussed as the attracting force, that determines the religious transit to CCR and the permanence of the faithful in this group, which is in the process itself. The identifications accomplished are presented, as well as the renewed identities, the redefined self-images, to lead to new ethical option. The man who lives this process is identified in his dichotomy between fragility and reactivity, between helplessness and the omnipotent attitude. Fragile because he suffers and is reactive in his individual and collective moral strength, as sees Durkheim. Constitutionally helpless and defending himself from that with a megalomaniac instinct, in Freud’s view. This man wants relief from suffering and seeks in CCR the cure for his illnesses. The approach of the charismatic offering turns to the possibility of responding to the expectations of the faithful. It reflects itself on the transformations of the adherents and the possible points of intersection between the therapeutics of the CCR and psychology’s ordinary psychotherapies. In the effort to understand the phenomenon of the subject’s reconstruction, from the joining in the charismatic renovation movement, the contributions psychology can add to this study are also numbered, as well as the subsidies it can receive in a feedback basis in its task to elucidate man’s psychical dimension.
A subjetividade consciente e inconsciente incentivando a adesão e a nova postura ética, como conseqüência do processo, constituem a força motora do estudo.

The object of study and research of this dissertation is to analyse the advance of the pentecostalism and the reaction of the arguments declared in some Catholic Church s documents, mainly in three sources: the Vatican, the CELAM and the CNBB, aiming at those that have more concern on the whole situation of the moment, that lead, as a consequence, to the necessity of dialogue toward religious pluralism. The questions of the research are as follow: How is it that the pentecostalism has historically spread up in Brazil? What are its causes and results? How the Catholic Church s word is placed toward the advance of the pentecostalism? What sort of interpretation we should give to the Church s thinkings, that try to reflect on the problem, specially in what is refered its attitudes concerning to dialogue and religious pluralism? The main hypothesis shows the Catholic Church in Brazil s concern to pentecostal growing, that produces strategics reactions, the recognition of the religious pluralism as well, and the seeking for dialogue, as the documents s contents expose in all theirs levels. The Church s thoughts are ambivalents: now an exclusivistic eclesiocentrism mark, than an inclusivistic cristocentrism position, or pluralistic teocentrism. The Church s praxis, mediated by discourses, change according to these positions. In the first chapter we work on the history of pentecostalism evolution by through several informations from census, different research sources, wich show the exodus of catholics to pentecostalism. In the second chapter we study some a few documents of the Church with its defensive discourse, of dialogue and the perplexity in front of religious pluralism and the advance of pentecostalism, the dialogue s trials with both evangelic and pentecostal people. In the third chapter we try to make clear the Church s position before the advance of pentecostalism, wich flows into the recognition of the religious pluralism and the necessity of dialogue. To interpret the discourses s position of the theology before religious pluralism we took in account three theological patterns: the exclusivist, the inclusivist and the pluralist. These are three paradigms with theological nature that let us to the knowledge of the Church s thoughts, in three levels: the Vatican, the CELAM and the CNBB, that aim at the pentecostalism s advance and place the problem on how to face this challenge , through dialogue with the creeds s diversity

The dissertation that follows will explore two essential topics in the field of religious learning and transmission. We are talking about to body postures and emotional aesthetic in christian religious services. To do this, we will research some anthropological studies on the emotions and the importance of memory in christian religiosity, in particular the implicit memory in the process of learning the body postures in liturgical services. We will finish this thesis with a question: whether it is to talk in terms of an epidemiology of body postures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter reviews a variety of anthropological approaches to religion from the work of Emile Durkheim through the contemporary cognitive theory of mind. It specifically investigates the culturally vast interplay of imagination with divinatory processes that legitimate war, witch-hunting, and revenge, and with cosmic postulates which sanctify the imposition of suffering on others and on oneself. Rituals have an important role in either supporting or opposing violence, whether or not they have explicitly to do with spirit worlds. Durkheim has argued that religion was essentially social and founded on the expression of community values, the images of society itself. Religiously sanctioned or enjoined practices of inflicting harm on one's own body depend on cosmology. Tendencies to violence are counterposed to tendencies to benevolence.

Abstract:
Religion disappears in the fog of plurality, vanishes in the heat of profanity. This is a common thesis that ties in with the modern "master narrative" of the disenchantment of the world and the decline of religion. But the postulated megatrend of the disappearance of religion is countered by its return in many areas of social life. The supposed secularization is confronted with a resacralization. Beyond its supposed disenchantment, religion obviously possesses a productive 'glowing core'. The dimension of transcendence, the genesis and enforcement of religiously shaped values, the significance of religious symbol systems in seemingly secularized societies, or even concepts of the sacredness of people, gods, living beings, and things are all worthy of consideration. The contributions by Klaus Bieberstein, Ernst Peter Fischer, Hans Joas, Thomas Laubach, Angelika Neuwirth, Peter B. Steiner and Reinhard Zintl reflect on this tense situation and offer starting points for a new dialogue between secularization and sacralization.

Abstract:
In this work, a sequel to my A New Science: The Discovery of Religion in an Age of Reason (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2010), I study some major aspects of the scholarly study of religion in the long nineteenth century—from the Enlightenment to the First World War. More precisely, I seek to understand the new status of Judaism and Islam in the formative period of the new discipline. In order to do that, I focus on the concept of Semitic monotheism, a concept developed by Ernest Renan around the mid-nineteenth century, on the basis of the postulated (and highly problematic) contradistinction between Aryan and Semitic families of peoples, cultures, and religions. This contradistinction grew from the Western discovery of Sanskrit and its relationship with European languages, at the time of the Enlightenment and Romanticism. Together with the rise of scholarly Orientalism, this discovery offered new perspectives on the East, as a consequence of which the Near East was demoted, as it were, from its traditional status as the locus of the biblical revelations. The book essentially studies a central issue in the modern study of religion. Doing so, however, it emphasizes that the new dualistic taxonomy of religions had major consequences and sheds new light on the roots of European attitudes to Jews and Muslims in the twentieth century and up to the present day.

Abstract:
Modern political ideologies can be divided into two categories, individualist and holistic. ‘Unity’, ‘community’, ‘totality’, ‘organism’ are typical concepts of holistic ideologies. This article deals with the holistic ideologies born after the French Revolution, and within this category distinguishes total from totalitarian ideologies. A total ideology is a global conception of life and of history, which postulates the social essence of man and subordinates the individual to the collective. A totalitarian ideology may be defined as a holistic ideology of a revolutionary party that considers itself to be the unique and exclusive vanguard of its own reference group—the proletariat, the nation, the racial entity—and as such demands for itself a monopoly of power in order to establish a new order. Total and totalitarian ideologies, presenting themselves as global conceptions of life that defined the significance and ends of individual and collective existence, have been interpreted as secular religions contributing to the sacralization of politics.

Abstract:
This chapter provides rationales for a philosophy of music education based on classic Chinese philosophies. The philosophy contributes to an array of ways of thinking in music education and emphasizes the quintessence of the human spirit that transcends time and space. The author points to the significance of early Chinese philosophies as postulated in Yijing (The Book of Changes), classic Confucianism (represented by ideologies of Confucius and Mencius), and classic Daoism (represented by ideologies of Laozi and Zhuangzi). Understanding these early classics is critical to understand a characteristically Chinese philosophy. An organismic worldview and a unique perspective in harmony characterize this philosophical inquiry. The author cautions readers about the developments of Confucianism and Daoism evolved after the classics, because their doctrines could be far removed from those of the classics, especially those indicated by prefixes such as “neo-,” “new,” and “contemporary,” or the adjective “religious.”

Abstract:
This book is a sequel to A New Science: The Discovery of Religion in an Age of Reason, where I analyzed new intellectual approaches to religion in early modernity, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century.1 In the present work, I study some major aspects of the scholarly study of religion during the long nineteenth century. More precisely, I seek here to understand the implications, in a secular age, which was also the formative period of the new discipline, of a major paradigm shift. The nineteenth century witnessed the transformation of the taxonomy of religions. According to the traditional model, in place since late antiquity, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam were cognate religions, all stemming from the biblical patriarch Abraham’s discovery of monotheism. This model was largely discarded during the Enlightenment, and would be later replaced by a new one, according to which Christianity, the religion of Europe, essentially belonged to a postulated family of the Aryan, or Indo-European religions, while Judaism and Islam were identified as Semitic religions....

Abstract:
Mendelssohn argued for the immortality of the soul in his 1767 best-seller Phaedo. Kant’s argument for the postulate of immortality in the first two Critiques was not dissimilar to Mendelssohn’s; both may have drawn on the influential Vocation of Man by Johann Joachim Spalding. But in his 1793 Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason, published after the death of Mendelssohn, Kant argued that the radical nature of human freedom means that a human being can undertake a change of heart from evil to good at any time, thereby undercutting any need to postulate immortality.

Abstract:
This Chapter, published by Depends on timing. the journal Asian Ethnology, is a theoretical exercise, inspired by Mary Douglas’s classic anthropological text Purity and Danger, that sets out to clarify the wide range of relationships between religions and humanitarian traditions as ideological movements, taking Islam as an instance. It postulates that the concept of the “sacred” is a special case of boundary maintenance or “purism”. Metaphorically, “puripetal force” (a neologism) is defined as a tendency common to all ideological systems, a resistance to social entropy or anomie. An explanatory model is proposed that accommodates forms of concentrated purism such as (within Islam) Wahhabi-Salafism and (within humanitarianism) the legacy of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Specific Islamic charities and welfare organizations interact differentially with both religious and humanitarian traditions. Meanwhile, US government policy towards charities sometimes seems dominated by an urge to peer into purity of motives. Finally, it is suggested that the model could equally be applied to Christian and other religious traditions, with the concluding thought that the common ground between the institutions of international humanitarianism and religious traditions is currently expanding.

Abstract:
Metals are fundamental components of modern society worldwide, and, despite the current economic downturn, we know we will be faced with ever increasing demands and ever-shrinking supplies. Efforts to achieve sustainable supplies of minerals must include efforts to expand the supply. About 60% of the ocean surface consists of the ocean floor, so it is reasonable to expect that deep ocean minerals could contribute significantly to the world supply. Human efforts to recover minerals have thus far concentrated almost exclusively on land-based resources, so it is reasonable to postulate that marine minerals might offer better prospects for future mineral supplies than land prospects. Currently, we know of at least six separate categories of marine minerals: 1. Aggegrate sand and gravel deposits; 2. Placer deposits of relatively high value minerals (gold, diamonds, tin, etc) hosted in aggegrates; 3. Biogenically derived phosphate deposits; 4. Sediment-hosted (manganese nodules) and hard-rock hosted (ferromanganese crusts) ferromanganese oxide deposits; 5. Sediment-hosted methane hydrate deposits; and 6. Hydrothermally derived sulfide deposits of copper, gold, nickel, zinc, and other metals. Thanks primarily to the engineering developments made by the offshore oil industry and the computer-science advances that have revolutionized much of modern society, the technology is in place for most of the tasks of deep seabed mining. The objective here is not to provide a general status update regarding marine minerals technology, but simply to demonstrate, using the best example available to date (the Nautilus Minerals venture in the Territorial Waters of Papua New Guinea) that the technology is in place and ready to go. Development of marine minerals has both the curse and blessing of taking place in the ocean. Since the 1970’s and before, the marine environment has taken on a public aura reserved more commonly for religious beliefs. This aura poses substantial obstacles to any marine development efforts. At the same time, a basic advantage of marine mineral developments is that nobody lives there. Thus, marine mining activities will not conflict with most normal human activities. Marine mining proposals should be subjected to thorough impact assessment analysis, but it is also critical that policymakers take steps to provide a level playing field for marine developments that encourages objective comparisons with alternative land-based proposals for supplying needed mineral resources. Governments should foster reasonable access to the marine mineral resources under their jurisdiction while also supporting incentive policies and related research programs.
