Abstract:
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) varieties Atlantic and Granola are widely grown in Indonesia. The optimal method of cultivation in the tropics, due to the susceptibility of cut seed for disease, is by small (20 to 55 g) whole seed potatoes. However, the variety Atlantic produces mostly large tubers, which are not suitable for planting as whole seeds. Although Granola produces a reasonable proportion of small tubers it still produces a few in the larger size grades and there is no fresh market in Western Australia for the larger tubers for this variety. The aim of this study was to develop method

A protocol is presented for the rapid (28 days) induction of microtubers on micropropagated layered potato plantlets of 'Kennebec', 'Russet Burbank' and 'Superior' in medium devoid of growth regulators. With this method the addition of coumarin, 6-(2-chloroethyl)-trimethylammonium chloride and 6-benzylamino-purine to the microtuberization medium either had no effect or significantly reduced microtuber weight per plantlet. Increasing the incubation period from 28 to 56 days significantly increased the weight of microtubers per plantlet and the proportion of microtubers heavier than 1 gram. Incr

Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The potato can be considered as one of the most important food crops in many African countries. The potential of this crop is reflected in the large increase in area of production where Africa showed the highest rate of growth within the developing world over the past twenty years. The multiplication rate of potatoes is very low compared to other crops. Therefore it is essential to investigate methods of increasing the number of minitubers produced from disease free in-vitro plantlets. There is a number of potato propagatio

Abstract Seed potato is the starting point in the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production chain. In order to secure potato production in a variety of production conditions, plant diseases must be controlled and the yield characteristics of the used cultivars ensured. In addition, production must be cost-effective. Characteristics particular to northern production conditions include long periods of daylight and a short growing season as well as a several months long seed potato storage period. Abstract:
The management and manipulation of soil nitrogen (`N`) was investigated as a means of influencing plant growth to increase tuber numbers produced from early generation seed potato crops. The project focussed on crops grown from minitubers, small potatoes produced under controlled environment conditions from tissue culture plantlets. The use of minitubers as planting material for first field generation seed potato crops reduces the risk of disease but is commercially challenging as the plants tend to produce low tuber numbers, limiting the seed multiplication rate. The first field generation is

Abstract:
The project examined the effects of seed potato production on the performance of the seed in the following ware crop. The research was conducted in Tasmania, Australia, where the temperate maritime climate supports a lengthy growing season and a low aphid borne virus pressure permits crops to be grown to senescence, or defoliated if prevention of oversized tubers is desired. Harvest in the relatively cool autumn/winter may be delayed many weeks after skin set as soil temperatures do not fall below -1˚C often. These factors permit a greater range of seed crop management options than is present
