The trial was conducted to quantify soil water loss under sorghum at Samaru (11o 11’N, 7o 36’E, 686m above mean sea level) on the Northern Guinea Savanna Ecological Zone of Nigeria during 2005/06 rainy seasons. The treatments, which consisted of two soil management practices, mulched soil and bared soil, were replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. Microlysimeters were installed at 8 weeks after sowing (WAS) for daily reading of potential evapotranspiration . Data were analyzed using the two way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation analysis.

AbstractCocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is an important cash crop in many tropical countries, particularly in West Africa. Heat and drought are both known to affect the physiology of cocoa plants through reduced rates of photosynthesis and transpiration, as well as changed physiological processes such as the functions of photosystems, chlorophyll synthesis, stomatal conductance and expression of heat-shock proteins. This in turn leads to decreased yields and increased risks of mortality under severe heat and drought. To help cocoa plants adapt to climate change, the literature suggests agroforestry

Abstract:
Vineyards are found on six of seven continents, producing a crop of high economic value with much historic and cultural significance. Because of the wide range of conditions under which grapes are grown, management approaches are highly varied and must be adapted to local climatic constraints. Research has been conducted in the traditionally prominent grape growing regions of Europe, Australia, and the western USA, but far less information is available to guide production under more extreme growing conditions. The overarching goal of this project was to improve understanding of vineyard water

Abstract:
Risk management has been recognized as an essential decision-making tool in the pipeline industry over the past decade. However, there are still knowledge and process gaps that prevent broader implementation by industry stakeholders. The work described herein generated a gap analysis on risk management practices in the pipeline industry to define a future project roadmap that will be used to fill in the information, knowledge, and process gaps and to advance the application of risk management in the industry. Abstract:
As stormwater regulations for hydrologic and water quality control become increasingly stringent, Department of Defense (DoD) facilities are faced with the daunting task of complying with multiple laws and regulations. This often requires facilities to plan, design, and implement structural best management practices (BMPs) to capture, filter, and/or infiltrate runoff—requirements that can be complicated, contradictory, and difficult to plan. This project demonstrated the Stormwater Management Optimization Toolbox (SMOT), a spreadsheet-based tool that effectively analyzes and plans for complian

It is a truism of educational research that almost all data are seriously under-analysed; unless data collection is tightly designed to test a specific hypothesis, the original researcher will explore only a fraction of its potential (Corti, 2000). To attempt to extend the utility of research data, an increasing number of researchers and research institutes are encouraging the archiving and sharing of research data (Backhouse, 2002; Corti, 2000; Corti et al., 1995; UK Data Archive, 2013; Parry & Mauthner, 2004; Qualidata, 2013; SIDOS, 2013; Thompson, 2003). Abstract:
Pesticides are agricultural technologies that farmers use to control pests and weeds and remain an important modern input for crop production including vegetable farming. There are many types of pesticides, such as insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides and herbicides, that target different threats to crops. While the potential production benefits of chemical pesticides are undeniable, people are becoming more aware of their risks. There is an array of dangers associated with inappropriate pesticide use. As pesticides are a poison, they pose inherent health risks to the farmers exposed to them

Abstract:
We conduct a meta-analysis of 44 studies and 68 different managerial skills training programs, with the aim of identifying program characteristics that can lead to more effective public policies promoting firm growth and entrepreneurship. We synthesize 431 estimates to assess the effects of these programs on firm performance. Our findings show that, on average, managerial skills development programs have positive returns on management practices, firm productivity, profits, and survival. We also examine how program and participant specifications affect program effectiveness. Our analysis sugges

Pollinating insects provide vital ecosystem services and are facing global declines and habitat loss . Roadsides are increasingly regarded as important potential areas for enhancing pollinator habitat. Understanding which roadsides best support pollinators — and why — is essential to helping locate and prioritize pollinator conservation efforts across roadside networks. To support this effort, we assessed butterfly, bee, and flowering plant species richness and abundance on a set of 63 stratified randomized roadside transects in State -managed rights -of -way in SE Idaho.
