Memory and nostalgia work in complex, paradoxical ways in Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men and The Road, both haunting the main protagonists, Sheriff Ed Tom Bell and the father, as well as bringing them to crucial realizations. These men give up the traditional hero role for the more meaningful and generative image of “carrying the fire,” which unites these two novels. Carrying the fire represents a memorial and nostalgic longing for home and family. Bell and the father attain this vision because of their obsession with the past, and because of their struggle with memory and nostalgia.

Abstract:
That women and men have different travel patterns has been known for a long time, and previous research argues that gender inequality is the reason for the different travel patterns. Thus, integrating a gender equality perspective into transportation planning has been a relevant topic for quite some time. However, it has been proven to be easier said than done. Gender equality has not been given much attention within transportation planning and planners find it difficult to know how to implement a gender equality perspective. By studying two County Transportation Plans developed by regions in

Katsoulis, George T. "Electronic counter-counter measures potential of a noncoherent FH/MFSK communications system under conditions of worst case hostile electronic counter measures and fading channels." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/8305.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the performance degradation resulting from multitone interference of orthogonal, noncoherent, frequency-hopped, M-ary frequency-shift keyed receivers (FH/MFSK) where the effect of thermal and other wideband noise is not neglected. The multiple, equal power jamming tones are assumed to correspond to some or all of the possible FH M-ary orthogonal signaling tones. Furthermore, the channel is modeled as a Ricean fading channel, a possibility precluded when thermal noise is neglected. Both the signaling tones and the multiple interference tones are assumed to be affected b

Abstract:
The area immediately surrounding a landfill was studied by DC resistivity methods, soil borings, and review of historical data bases to learn if the landfill had released leachate to the ground water and to define the geology and hydrogeology of the site. Property immediately adjacent to the landfill has been proposed as a new landfill site. The geology and hydrogeology of this site were investigated to provide supplemental data for use in planning and operating the new landfill.Although no contaminant plumes were located by resistivity methods, the range in measured resistivity values proved

Price, David James 1959. "The effects of ozone oxidation on dissolved organic matter, color, and trihalomethane formation potential of Orange County, California groundwater." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278305.

Full text
Abstract:
Laboratory studies using ozone oxidation were conducted on samples of groundwater. The effects of ozonation on natural organic matter (NOM), color, and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) were examined. The fourteen groundwater samples had dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations between 0.9 and 14.4 mg/L and color levels between 13 and 210 pcu. Small doses of ozone appeared to result in an oxidative polymerization phenomenon whereby the apparent molecular weight (AMW) of the organics increased. Higher doses of ozone led to lower AMW organic matter. Ozonation was successful at dest

<p> This study utilized geographic information systems (GIS) software to identify and map vacant parcels of land where the establishment of urban market gardens and small-scale farms would most likely be viable, and then estimated potential crop yields and gross sales based on available land resources. Of the 100,618 parcels (62,098 acres) within the study area, 14 percent (4,603 parcels, 8,612 acres) were water-metered, vacant, and met the study's minimum suitability requirements.
