Full textCardiovascular disease constitutes the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in France. Atherosclerosis is a key contributor to cardiovascular disease. During the development of atherosclerosis, two major events signify that complications may arise, first of which is the destabilization of the atherosclerotic plaque, leading to plaque disruption and secondly, vascular calcifications leading to vascular rigidity. In order to improve our knowledge of molecular mechanism involved in both atherosclerosis and vascular calcification, we studied the potential implication of TRAIL and OPG. Through immuno-histochemical analysis of aortic valves taken from ApoE-/- mice, a model of chronic kidney disease (CKD), we were able to show that the occurrence of CKD correlates with an increase in the expression of TRAIL and OPG at the arterial level. In vitro, we alsio demonstrated that TRAIL dramatically increase the capacity of smooth muscle cells to mineralize. To extend these experimental observations, we carried out two clinical studies in which we have measured the concentrations of TRAIL and OPG in the serum of patients on haemodialysis presenting with calcifications and in patients presenting with an acute coronary syndrome. Our results clearly demonstrated in both populations studied, a significant decrease of seric TRAIL level, while OPG level were notably increased. In patients on haemodialysis, by contrast to OPG, TRAIL did not correlate with calcification score. A significant inverse relationship was found between TRAIL and CRP in both populations. Moreover, in patients with an acute coronary syndrome, we also demonstrated an inverse relationship between TRAIL and MMP-9 levels. Taken together, our data clearly suggest that TRAIL and OPG are involved in pathophysiological mechanism of atherosclerosis and vascular calcification

Full textMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system which is frequently responsible for motor disability. Better assessment of pathophysiological process implicated in motor system dysfunction (cortico-spinal tract or more diffuse tissue damage) as well as the compensatory mechanises are critical in the understanding and the prevention of disability. Their study in the early stage of the disease will allow to a better understanding of the links between tissue injury, compensatory mechanisms and functional consequences. We have better characterized functional dysfunction of the central motor pathway at the early stage of multiple sclerosis. We have also evidenced the influence of diffuse brain injury on functional motor cortical reorganization. Last, we have demonstrated the existence of a basal functional plasticity at rest of the nondominant motor network that is correlated with its functional plasticity during action

Full textAim: To investigate dental biofilm bacteria for growth and acid production in different environments. The occurrence of inherent buffering capacity by alkali production in an artificial consortium and oral consortium was also examined.Materials and method: Fresh isolates of Actinomyces, Lactobacillus paracasei, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus intermedius and Streptococcus oralis were incubated in growth media with neutral or acidic initial pH and with and without glucose and/ or urea. Growth was monitored by measuring optical density at 600nm. Acid and alkali production was monitored using a pH meter. Results: L. paracasei and S. intermedius showed growth independent of pH and a more acidic final pH at acidic than neutral initial pH. S. oralis and Actinomyces showed a greater growth at neutral pH and had an acid production insensitive to an acidic environment. All species reached a final pH below the critical pH for enamel (5.5) independent of initial pH. Growth was unaffected by glucose. In oral consortium, the final pH was less acidic in the medium with glucose and urea compared to in the medium with only glucose. Conclusion: All species showed acidic and aciduric properties and may contribute to tooth demineralization. Further studies with a larger number of measurements are needed to assess the cariogenicity of these species with a higher reliability. Alkali production in saccharolytic species may affect the plaque pH. Further studies are needed to assess the occurrence of alkali production in saccharolytic species related to caries and its effects on the pH in the biofilm.

Full textThis research has the purpose of investigating through an epidemiological study, the distribution of the hydrogenionic potential of the Plaque and the possibles variables which influence them in 14-year old schoolboys. Data on the hydrogenionic potential of the plaque were collected at rest and five and twenty minutes after having rinsed the mouth with a saccharose solution at 10 per cent . Data were also collected about usual ingestion of food, plaque rate, caries rates, preventive practices related to Buccal health, occupation and educational level of parents or adults responsible for the schoolboys. The analysis of the data made it evident that under the conditions of this study, no associations were observed that would allow for the detection of influences of the variables investigated in relation to the hydrogenionic potential of the dental plaque.

Full textThe objective of the present research is to find out the methodological image processings of raws data landsat thematic mapper in order to determine the soil characteristics in the central plain of thailand for water resources management prospective, and on behalf of testing the avantage of remote sensing in the framework of agricultural policy. The landsat tm image acquired during the end of dry season (08 april 1991) in the central region. The numerical data of six bands landsat tm were processed without the band tm6 and without the sampling of test areas by the principal component factors analysis (pca) for study the soil moisture behaviors. The classification of surface stages had been carried out by the stepwish discriminant analysis with the seven bands of landsat tm numerical raws data in order to classify the bare soils in particular of the soil textures and the soil moisture stages. The results of image processings were displayed in the form of classified images. It is possible to process the pca direct so as to obtain the first three linear components of a pca which explained more than 95 % of variance. The result images of the third component permitted to elaborate the soil moisture index. We can classify the various surface stages related the agro-ecological landscapes and corresponding with the spectral graphics of radiometric reflectance values of the training areas. The obtained map of surface stages show : kinds of crops cultivation, soil moisture stages, stages of crops growing, kinds of soil textures and different water surfaces. The classified images and the obtained maps may be used to determine the suitable areas of rice production, and to mark off the hydromorphic soils with high moisture retension. These images and informations can contribute a improvement soil maps, a water resources management, a soil management and provided a better orientation and organization of new agricultural policy of thai government

Full textThe abundance of phytophagous insects is determined by numerous interacting biotic and abiotic factors. In capital-breeding phytophagous insects, larval host plant quality is a key determinant of the adult phenotype and the performance of both males and females. Curiously, if the effect of host plant quality on female reproductive success is well-established, little effort has been conducted to determine this effect on male reproductive success. Moreover, in Lepidoptera, males transfer to females a spermatophore containing sperm and accessory gland products rich in nutrients that could be reinvested into female reproduction. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate how male larval nutrition on different host cultivars affects male reproductive traits which could, in turn, influence female reproductive output and mate choice strategies in an important grapevine pest, the European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana). During these three years, we found that the host cultivar for the larvae strongly influences the energy reserves of male adult moths, affecting ultimately their reproductive potential through the size and content of spermatophores they transfer to females at mating. Moreover, male investment in the spermatophore declines over consecutives matings, suggesting that spermatophores are energetically expensive to produce in this monandrous capital breeding species. Thus ‘male quality’ depends on both the male larval origin and mating history, and females receiving protein-rich spermatophores at mating have an overall greater reproductive output than females mated with poor quality males producing less nutritionally rich spermatophores. Finally, females are able to discriminate among males and mate more with males having high sperm quality (virgin males or males from certain cultivars or geographical origins) to obtain substantial direct benefits. The results of this thesis confirm the importance of considering the “male effect” when trying to understand the evolution of phytophagous populations. Moreover, identifying the ecological conditions that influence the mating success of male and female in crop-pest species may lead to a better management of these crop pests

Full textActive materials, first of all piezoelectric and piezo-electro-magnetic ones, are often used as functional parts of different electronic devices including sensors, transducers and actuators because these materials have the ability to change their shape under electric or magnetic field. In many cases the size of the mentioned devices is relatively small, but nevertheless they can undergo to very large mechanical, electric and magnetic fields. Moreover, these devices are usually constructed of elements which can be manufactured of different materials (piezoelectric or piezoelectromagnetic elements, electrodes etc.). Because of an imperfect adhesion of the mentioned elements different defects, like debonding and delamination, can occur between different elements. These situations may take place during the manufacture and exploitation of the active smart structures. The mentioned defects between different constitutive elements are called interface cracks. These cracks are usually the main reason of constructions failure, therefore, their investigation is very important for avoidance of such failure and providing the reliability of electronic devices. Various methods of the investigation of fracture mechanics problems for piezoelectric and piezoelectromagnetic bodies with interface cracks have been developed up to now. The methods of interface crack investigations essentially depend on the modeling of the electrical conditions at the crack faces. Because cracks are usually filled with some medium (air, silicon oil, water and so on), it is desirable to take the properties of this medium into consideration. On this reason the so called electrically permeable, impermeable and limited permeable crack models are developed and actively used at present. Moreover, the crack faces can be sometimes covered with electrodes or the crack can be filled by conducting fluid. In both cases the so called electrically conducting crack model should be applied. Many problems for interface cracks in the framework of the mentioned electric crack models are already solved, however some important problems remains unresolved till nowadays. The solution of these problems defines the tasks of the present investigation. First of all it should be mentioned that the analytical investigation of interface cracks with mixed electrical conditions at the crack faces are unknown for the author of this thesis. Therefore the first task of the work is related to the investigation of an interface crack in a piezoelectric bimaterial under the action of antiplane mechanical and in-plane electric loadings provided that one part of the crack faces is electrically conducting whilst another one is electrically permeable. Due to the presentation of electromechanical quantities via sectionally-analytic functions the problem is reduced to the combined Dirichlet-Riemann boundary value problem and solved exactly. All electromechanical characteristics along the interface, including the stress intensity factors, are found in a simple analytical form. The second task is devoted to the consideration of a conductive crack and an electrode interaction at a piezoelectric bi-material interface under the action of anti-plane mechanical loading and in-plane electrical field parallel to the crack faces. Special attention is devoted to the consideration of new interface crack model, which is free from the oscillation in case of completely permeable interface (no electrode) outside of the crack. The analytical approach based upon complex potentials method is used. The third task is associated with the first one, but for piezoelectromagnetic material and an additional in-plane magnetic loading. The presentations of mechanical, electric and magnetic quantities via sectionally-analytic functions are found and the problems of linear relationship are formulated and solved exactly for any lengths of electro-magneto conducting and electro-magneto permeable parts of the crack. Full textIn mobile networks, the mobile core plays a crucial role in providing connectivity between mobile user devices and external packet data networks such as the Internet. After more than three decades, the mobile core has been gradually evolved through four generations and is called the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) in the current generation (4G). In recent years, the explosion of mobile data traffic and devices and the advent of new services have led to the investigation of the next generation of mobile networks, i.e., 5G. Among other technology candidates, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) have been widely considered to be key enablers for the network architecture of 5G, especially the mobile packet core (MPC) network. This thesis aims at identifying benefits and challenges of introducing SDN and NFV to re-achitect the current MPC architecture towards 5G and addressing some of the challenges. To this end, we conduct a comprehensive survey of the existing SDN/NFV-based MPC architectures. Through this survey work, several research questions for future work have been identified and we contribute to address two of the research questions. Firstly, we propose an SDN/NFV-based MPC architecture for providing multicast and broadcast services. Secondly, we tackle the scalability problem of the Mobility Management Entity (MME) - one of the EPC key control plane entities. In particular, we investigate different approaches to achieve better load balancing among virtual MMEs in a virtual and distributed MME design, which in turn improves scalability.

Full textThe future of sustainable agriculture is based on an optimal management of the soil fertility and the soil physical and biological properties. The present study focused on identifying cultural practices that mimic some ecological processes (facilitation, complementarity, "plant-soil-feedback” effect) contributing to the maintenance of the soil fertility. These concepts have been empirically used in farming practices mixing plant species in cropping systems. One of the most commonly Mediterranean cropping system associates legumes to cereal in rotation or intercropping (i.e. Faba bean/ Durum wheat association). However, in order to optimize the impact of crop management on the productivity and stability of agro-ecosystems, the biological mechanisms involved must be clarified. The aim of this study is to improve our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the soil microflora plant interactions and especially the importance of mycorrhizal symbiosis in these biotic and abiotic processes. By conducting experiments in controlled and in situ conditions, our results show that intercropping stimulates the wheat growth and its mineral nutrition (N and P). We also showed that this cultural practice induces significant changes on the soil microbial functional diversity, on the fluorescent Pseudomonas functionalities, and also on the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) community structures. Furthermore, and in order to optimize the impact of the composition of the plant cover in intercropping, we have shown that increasing the diversity of legumes significantly improved the expected benefits on wheat growth and its mycorrhizal status. These results highlight the need to manage crop diversity in agroecosystems, in order to enhance the ecological services provided by legumes, and to consider the management of AM fungal communities in agro-ecological strategies as major component to maintain crop productivity

Full textThe objective of this work was to investigate the effects of soil compaction on carbon assimilation, photosynthate partitioning, and morphology of corn plants during vegetative growth period up to tassel initiation. We were particularly interested in carbon input into the soil and soil microbial biomass. Corn plants were grown in culture pots containing compacted soil (bulk density of 1. 45 g cm-3 ) or loose soil (bulk density of 1. 30 g cm-3). Experiments were conducted in a growth chamber and lasted for 21 to 42 days. Carbon partitioning in the plant-soil system was evaluated using 14C pulse-labeling techniques. The increase in soil bulk density decreased carbon assimilation rate and total carbon fixation. Furthermore, soil compaction delayed leaf appearance rate decreasing therefore plant height, shoot dry weight, and leaf area. In addition, root biomass and root elongation were also inferior when plants were grown in compacted soil and root length appeared to be the most sensible parameter to high soil mechanical resistance. Simultaneously, a great increase in carbon input into the soil occurred to the detriment of root carbon. Soil microbial biomass increased considerably in compacted soil thanks to this increase in carbon substrates and to physical protection provided for soil microflora as a result of the reduced porosity in compacted soil. Three hypotheses were formulated to explain these results: 1- a decrease in soil or root water potential or a sink limitation induces a down-regulation of photosynthetic activity, 2- the increase in root diameter decreases soil mechanical resistance, and 3- the increase in carbon rhizodeposition alleviates the effects of mechanical constraint. The effects of soil compaction persisted with plant age although the difference between the two treatments decreased in terms of percentage

Full textUrban green-spaces are considered to be more important today than ever before. Parks arenot only beneficial for their positive effects on human health, but also for their social aspects. Parks are consequently considered to be the most suitable environment for encounters between people with different backgrounds and interests. Urban parks have developed from a place where the city-eliteexpressedtheir power to the public into a common place for all. Even though the parksareconsidered to be an open and welcoming place, users are considered to represent a homogenous group of people, which in turn, eliminates the potential of social interaction between different social groups. In this thesis a part of the urban park, Stadsträdgården, is investigated with the intention to study and map its use, its users and the existing supply. The methods used in this project are a questionnaire and observations. During the observations elements like counting, mapping, a qualitative experiment and an inventory of the park-attributes have been implemented. In the park, a broad composition of visitors consisting of varied age, gender and ethnicity, can be found. The focus area of this case study is divided into zones through the area of use and the users. In parks, time is an important dimension controlling whether different people will meet or not. Social interaction between strangers occurs in a small amount, and when it does, it depends on a third component, an event or a physical object that calls for a common interest. The parklacksnumerous qualities in the existing supply of the parkaccording to the users. However, it is uncertain towhat extent the public influencesthe planning of existing urban parks in Gävle, and thus if their considerations are ever involved in the planning process.

Abstract: We describe here methods for the area estimation of plane regions bounded by simple curves and also some properties of plane transformations which preserve area. In Chapter 1 the area of polygons, described as a sum of determinants, is used to discuss the calculus of the area of plane regions bounded by simple curves approached by polygons adjusted through geometric parameters. Mechanical processes ( planimeters) based on the Green's Theorem are described in Chapter 2. Properties and special families of area preserving mappings are presented in Chapter 3.
