Abstract:

This research focuses on the problem of how early pottery in New York State is defined and analyzed. Many traditional models suggest early pottery developed from an earlier steatite stone bowl technology. Thus far, studies that examine early pottery in the Northeast, called the Vinette Type Series, focus on the potential functions, archaeological contexts, and surface appearance of these vessels and fail to account for the social practices and technological choices inherent within these artifacts. This dissertation reevaluates early pottery using a non-typological approach. In the place of descriptive analysis, this research uses petrography, experimental geo-archaeology, and technical choice and agency theories to identify the different types of temper present in early ceramic vessels. This study also looks at the patterns of different technical choices made by early potters. The redefinition of early ceramic technology using post-modern theories allows the author to better understand the social practices involved in the rise of ceramic technology. The ceramic technological patterns identified are then compared with steatite stone bowl technology. This study concludes that early ceramic technology is more closely related to the practices of earth oven convection cooking than it is to any other cooking artifact. A reclassification of early ceramic fabrics is presented and the traditional early ceramic Vinette type categories are rejected.

Abstract:
The Wickliffe Thick pottery type, an unusual vessel with a globular body, thick wall, and funnel-like opening at the bottom, has been assumed to be related to salt production and/or juice pressing. The following project presents the results of a use-wear analysis in order to understand Wickliffe Thick’s possible uses demonstrating that past conclusions likely need revision. A systematic, macroscopic analysis of ceramic sherds from more than 20 Mississippian sites throughout Kentucky, Missouri, and Illinois are included in the study. Use-wear on the samples occur in a low frequency. Although other factors such as a white efflorescence, and Wickliffe Thick’s temporal and spatial layout may hint at its usage in the nixtamalization process. This paper lays out the evidence for these hypotheses while also recording the characteristics of Wickliffe Thick across the southeastern United States.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examines the relationship between form and the resultant space that it encloses, through a process of assembly. The process consists of assembling materials in Phase 1, and assembling parts cut-out from a homogenous ceramic form in Phase 2. Embedded in the act of assembly is the designer's ability to construct the object in multiple formal configurations. Manipulating the form (solid) results in mutation of the space (void) held within and in-between the solid, and vice-versa. Four formal concepts guide the process of assembly in this study: interplay of solid and void, manipulation of the material skin, dynamic visual motion, and light as a building materialThe research in this paper consists of literature survey, precedent studies on two ceramic artists, and analysis of art exhibits. The significance of this project lies in its ability to blur the boundaries between academic disciplines of metalsmithing and ceramics, art and architecture. Design resulting from the overlap between disciplines has vast potential and can lead to dynamic possibilities.

M.A.
Using the Mohr Site as a case study, this project examines the role of pottery in Shenks Ferry mortuary features. Following an analysis of the mortuary pottery, the resulting information is compared with pottery from the general site assemblage as well as with descriptions of pottery from other Shenks Ferry sites. In addition, an inventory of the Mohr Site grave good assemblage has been created. The assemblage at the Mohr site is especially rich and is particularly noteworthy given the nature and number of the burials discovered; no other current collection has as much variety or quantity as is seen at this site. The pottery recovered from Mohr exhibits characteristics typical of pottery found at other Shenks Ferry Sites and in other Shenks Ferry burials. The ceramic evidence challenges the traditional assumption that the Mohr site is a transitional Lancaster-Funk Phase site. Likewise, the length of time this site was occupied is also debatable. Mortuary vessels at Mohr are predominately associated with extended burials oriented to the east. There are also correlations between mortuary vessels types and age and sex. Possible connections between other grave goods and age, sex, and body position and between body position and season of interment are also discussed. Additional research employing methods such as residue analysis to compare information regarding the contents of the mortuary and non-mortuary Mohr Site pottery as well as further evidence produced by additional excavations or more in-depth analysis of current grave material collections will provide further insight into Shenks Ferry mortuary ritual and is necessary in order to fully understand this site and its place in the chronology of the Shenks Ferry Complex.

Abstract:
There are two principle arguments in this thesis. First, this thesis will show that Félix Bracquemond had a profound impact on late-nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century ceramics in America. Second, this thesis will illustrate how John Ruskin’s principle that pottery is “more permanent than the Pyramids” encouraged reform of the ceramic arts and shaped the Art Pottery Movement of the late nineteenth century. After this thesis introduces Bracquemond as an innovator in ceramic decoration and the dissemination of Ruskin’s principle, the thesis will examine two instances in the American Art Pottery Movement in which Bracquemond’s and Ruskin’s influence can be detected. The first is Theodore Davis’s 1879 design for the Haviland-Hayes Service, the White House dinner service for Rutherford B. Hayes. The second case study is the Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati, which represents the apex of Bracquemond’s influence in America and Ruskin’s principle of the permanence of pottery.

Abstract:
Materials from archaeological assemblages around the world have been examined using a variety of methods in order to obtain data that can contribute to our understanding of past societies, cultures, and behaviors. In particular, ceramics have been analyzed to obtain data that can be used to determine how pottery was manufactured and how its use changed over time. While many ceramic analyses employ established methods of examination such as physical analysis, new methods have been developed. This thesis explored the use of computed tomography (CT), physical examination, and residue analysis to examine a collection of pottery sherds from four archaeological sites in American Samoa. The results obtained from this research were used to determine if CT and residue analysis could be viable for ceramic analysis in addition to determining if changes in ceramic manufacture could be documented over space and time in American Samoa.

Laforge, Travis. "Specialization in Small-Scale Societies: The Organization of Pottery Production at Kolomoki (9ER1), Early County, Georgia." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4115.

Full text
Abstract:
Investigating the organization of production systems can reveal much about a society, in particular how resources and labor were allocated, and the influence that economic, political, social, and ceremonial institutions had on the production process. Interpreting the nature of specialized production is useful for understanding how production was organized. In turn, the degree of standardization exhibited by the goods being produced is used to determine the nature of specialization. While archaeological research regarding specialized production has expanded over time to incorporate a wide range of societies, such research is often focused on complex societies. The research presented here focuses on the small-scale, or non-stratified, community that once inhabited the Kolomoki site, a Middle to Late Woodland period site in Early county, Georgia. This thesis utilizes a three-dimensional laser scanner to document Weeden Island pottery from Kolomoki. The digital images created by the scanner were used to measure incising and punctation marks. The measurements were then analyzed in order to determine the extent of standardization among the decorative attributes. Results suggest that standardization varies among different subsamples of pottery. However, the overall degree of standardization is relatively low, thus suggesting that specialized production may not have existed, or was very limited, at Kolomoki. Despite the limited extent of standardization among the decorative attributes, the results of this research, especially in conjunction with previous research, suggest that some pottery may have been afforded special attention during the production process. In particular, pottery from mound proveniences, and socially valued goods, notably sacred and prestige items, demonstrate higher degrees of standardization. This leads to the conclusion that the production of Weeden Island pottery was likely influenced by ritual and ceremonial activity within the Kolomoki community. This thesis contributes to a greater understanding of specialization in non-stratified Woodland period societies in the southeastern United States.

In this research, I investigated the ceramics of the Tapajos people, in approach that had opted to recognise the setting this production and verify, in structural analysis of its objects, some formal elements. It also sought to investigate how procedures inherent in ceramic making may have been employed in the process, observing singularities of some objects. Throughout the course, impressions and inspirations were also collected and stimulated the creative process of the author. In a dialogue between thought and action, theory and practice, words and objects, the research concluded with the elaboration of a set of objects and ceramic sculptures, which expose, in its visuality, perceptions of this contemporary artist ceramist about what was investigated.

Speakman, Robert J. "Mimbres Pottery. Production and Distribution." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/123805.

Full text
Abstract:
Mimbres-Mogollon people inhabited areas of southwestern New Mexico from approximately A.D. 200–1150, with settlements located primarily in the Gila, Mimbres, and Rio Grande Valleys and immediate adjacent areas. Among the most recognizable of Mimbres cultural traïts is the production of a white-slipped brown-paste ceramic decorated with bold, black, geometric designs. By about A.D. 1000, Mimbres pottery came to be more elaborately decorated with finely executed geomètric designs; in some cases, vessels were decorated with naturalistic motifs of animals, humans, plants, and anthropomorphized figures. This research project examines the production and distribution of Mimbres-Mogollon pottery using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA, NAA) to identify pottery production sites and the movement of pottery throughout the Mimbres and adjacent regions of the American Southwest. Since publication of Gilman et al.’s (1994) seminal study of Mimbres pottery from the American Southwest using NAA, dozens of research projects involving the analyses of Mimbres-Mogollon and Jornada-Mogollon pottery have occurred. Projects have ranged in scale from small (<30) to large (e.g., 100–200 samples). These combined efforts have resulted to date in the analyses of thousands of Mimbres-Mogollon and Jornada-Mogollon ceramics and clays. Very little of this research has been formally published, and until now there has been no comprehensive analysis and interpretation that includes most/all extant NAA data. In addition to hundreds of recent NAA analyses conducted for this project, most extant data generated for earlier Mimbres NAA projects are incorporated into this study. In total, the dataset includes more the 3,600 NAA analyses of pottery and clays obtained from several hundred archaeological sites in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico. Research discussed herein provides—from a chemical perspective—the most accurate and comprehensive interpretation of Mimbres pottery production and distribution to date. Statistical analysis of the NAA dataset resulted in the identification of 35 distinct pottery groups. This finding is in contrast to most previous studies that only identified on average four to six compositional groups. Knowledge of the true group structure allows for a more accurate reconstruction of Mimbres pottery production and distribution and allows for examinations of temporal changes. Ultimately, this research will serve as a basis for archaeologists seeking to examine a broad range of topics related to Mimbres social organization and interaction, gender, and ideology.

Abstract:
Taste--an appreciation for some things, a disdain for others--is usually understood by sociologists as playing a key role in struggles for position within closed, hierarchical status systems. Yet taste that reaches across cultural and social boundaries is a common phenomenon in a world of mobility and falling barriers to travel and access. This study argues that this expression of taste also has a political dimension, through an examination of the sponsorship of traditional Pueblo Indian pottery by Anglo newcomers to northern New Mexico in the 1920s and 1930s. The organization that these newcomers founded, the Indian Arts Fund, played an important role in building a differentiated market for Pueblo pottery, supported by an increasingly complex body of knowledge and evaluation. This intervention into the market for pottery, and into the definition of Pueblo culture, served to insert the Indian Arts Fund's members into regional society, against the resistance of older, more established elites. A visible association with Pueblo pottery linked newcomers to the transformation of the regional economy by tourism, which had shifted the source of value in northern New Mexico from natural resources to the marketing of particularity and difference. An examination of the role of pottery production, and income from pottery, in Pueblo communities reveals that the relationship between pottery and Pueblo culture was more complex, and more tangential, than the image that was being constructed in the context of the market.

Abstract:
This work argues that the cognitive theoretical approach called enactivism is the most functional to interpret contemporary YA speculative fiction. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter saga, Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments esalogy and Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games trilogy are the three case studies here analyzed. My original contribution to the rich debate on YA speculative fiction concerns the specific slant I propose which complements the many different perspectives already existing, from feminist, to socialist, to religious, posthumanist, to name a few; all of these perspectives take into consideration mostly one particular theme at a time, and the link between YA production and children’s literature. I argue that an enactivist perspective can provide an explanation for the increasing diffusion of these narratives among young adults but especially among adults, thanks to the focus on the interaction between text and reader, and also between readers and their contemporary environment; from this last interaction, also a multiplicity of themes usually conveyed by these narratives can be explained. I start from an explanation of Marco Caracciolo’s The Experientiality of Narrative, which provides the reader the basic tenets of enactivism in literature, then I proceed with mapping YA literature and speculative fiction considering their origins, narrative techniques and empathic bonds established with readers, to come eventually to focus on close readings and take a closer look at the themes in the three case studies I selected.

Defining the Fremont archaeological culture has challenged archaeologists for decades. There is still considerable debate about the origins of the Fremont, their eventual demise, their genetic relationship to modern Native American tribes, and myriad other issues. In nearly a century of Fremont research, socio-political, economic, and religious complexity remain elusive subjects. Examining technological style, the manifestation of socially influenced choices during each step of production as a means of passive communication, is one useful avenue to examine Fremont material culture to uncover the social patterns they may, or may not contain. I examine whether or not technological style in Fremont Snake Valley corrugated pottery hold traces of social identity produced by Fremont potters living in the Parowan Valley, Utah.

Abstract:
This study illustrates the importance of finding out whether painted ceramics represent the total repertoire of decorated artifacts that are expected to carry social information. Painted designs on pottery are the focus of study because (1) painted decoration has had great importance in Southwest archaeology for studying social interaction, cultural affiliation, and fine-grained chronology based on stylistic change, and (2) painted decoration is less constrained by technology and intended vessel function than other attributes, and is most free to vary for social or ideological reasons. Two assumptions underlying previous work on ceramic design "messaging" are examined. First, are ceramics the most important medium for carrying social information? Second, is ethnicity the kind of information they are most likely to carry? These questions are addressed in a case study from the American Southwest. Decorated pottery, baskets, textiles, figurines, and rock art from the seventh century Basketmaker III period occupation of rock shelters in the Prayer Rock District, northeastern Arizona are examined. Comparison of design structure and content across these different media reveals two decorative styles, one for the portable household artifacts and one for rock art. In this case, pottery does not carry the full range of potential social information signalled by applied designs. The contexts of these two decorative styles are suggested by considering aspects of artifact function, design visibility, spatial distribution of artifacts, rock art, and architecture, together with hypotheses about gender differentiation and community organization. It is concluded that for the Prayer Rock Basketmakers, pottery decoration may have carried messages that had more to do with gender than ethnicity.

Krummel, Jordan Andrea. "Holt Cemetery| An anthropological analysis of an urban potter's field." Thesis, Tulane University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1522757.

Full text
Abstract:

Holt Cemetery is a historic potter's field in New Orleans that has been in active use for several centuries. One of the few below-ground cemeteries in New Orleans, it is one of the most culturally fascinating burial places in the city. In spite of being frequently visited by families (evidenced by the unique votive material left on grave plots) and the final resting place of several historic figures, Holt is threatened by a lack of conservation so extreme that the ground surface is littered with human remains and the cemetery is left unprotected against grave robbing. Many locals have expressed concern that occult rituals take place within Holt, promoting the theft of human bones, while others have expressed concern that the skeletal material is stolen to be sold. Attempts to map and document the cemetery were originally undertaken by archaeologists working in the area who intended to create a searchable database with an interactive GIS map. Additionally, the nonprofit group Save Our Cemeteries, which works to restore New Orleans' cemeteries and educate the public about their importance, has taken part in conservation work. As of today all the projects and preservation efforts involving the cemetery have ceased. This thesis documents and analyzes the skeletal material within the cemetery alongside the votive material and attempts to explain why Holt is allowed to exist in its current state of disrepair while still remaining a place of vivid expressive culture.

Abstract:

Good leadership is arguably important to the success of any organization, nation, or people. Research over the last 50 years indicates that transformational leaders are desirable and that such leaders can be developed. This research assessed whether and to what extent the protagonists in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire and Mockingjay: The Final Book of the Hunger Games, Harry Potter and Katniss Everdeen, respectively, demonstrate the four characteristics of transformational leadership: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis thesis situates the Harry Potter books into the greater body of food studies and into the extant children's literary tradition through an examination of how food can be used to understand cultural identity. Food is a biological need, but because we have created social rules and rituals around food consumption and sharing, there is more to eating than simple nutritional value. The Harry Potter series is as much about overcoming childhood adversity, and good versus evil, as it is about magic, and food in the Harry Potter series is both abundant and relevant to the narrative, context, and themes of the books. Sweets such as candy, puddings, and cakes, help construct both wizard and Muggle identity in addition to serving as a bridge between readers and characters. How the characters use sweets to create and reinforce friendships or exclude those who do not belong is important, especially since children usually lack other cultural capital and, in their worlds, food is reward, treat, and punishment. Examples of this are shown in the scene where Harry first travels on the Hogwarts Express, in the ways the Dursleys deny Harry birthday celebrations, and in how holidays are celebrated by the witches and wizards in the series. The sharing of food in the novels builds tensions, creates bonds, and codes different characters as "acceptable" or "unacceptable" based on their willingness, or refusal, to share food. Teatime and feasting are examples of how food is shared by analogous and disparate groups of people in the series. Tea is served most often by those in subordinate positions of power, but is one way in which the characters can socialize and create community. Feasts at the beginning and end of the school term bookmark the year by immersing students and faculty into a shared world at first, and then by sending them back to their families, aware of their own triumphs and accomplishments. When feasts are used to unite outside groups, such as before the Triwizard Tournament, the ways that different foods are embraced or rejected serve to reinforce identity and inclusion.Using cultural studies methods in conjunction with food studies and Reader-Response critical theory, this thesis argues that food in the Harry Potter series represents the socially constructed identities of the characters within the texts, and also serves to bridge the gap between the readers and the characters.

Abstract: Noticing a dynamic in the indigenous ceramics that is the result of agencies and their capture effects on the receptors of this art, the research makes an approximation to the socio-environmental relations and cosmologies, Andean and Amazonian, to understand the indigenous ontologies and the relations of alterity with mythical beings like the serpent that trigger social transformations in the communities. The agency of the xamanism in the production of concepts and of person is inscribed in the ceramic productions through references to the serpent as the kene, drawings Shipibo-Conibo, and prehispanic Andean ceramic iconography, indicating that indigenous ceramic knowledge functions in a cosmological network in South America.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the traditions of textual interaction that impact the forms of reading engaged in with fanfiction. This thesis continues by exploring how self-insertion fanfiction functions as a medium through which authors express their reading of the text primary through the emotional impact of the text through wish fulfillment, and the interaction of their cultural moment and the text. Furthermore, it argues that self-insertion fanfiction is a mode of literary critique in which the author acknowledges the effect of a mediated world on their perception of self and reality. Through this recognition of a constructed self, the author rejects the attractiveness of objective analysis, allowing them to critique the work from their subject position influenced by the text.

McGee, Paula L. "The Wal-Martization of African American Religion: T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cgu_etd/70.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an ideological critique of the New Black Church model of ministry, with T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed (WTAL) as a case study. T.D. Jakes is an African American televangelist who pastors The Potter’s House, a supermegachurch in Dallas, Texas. He is the quintessential example of a New Black Church pastor—a religious entrepreneur with several successful faith brands. WTAL is by far his most successful brand. Unashamed of his capitalist success, with an empire estimated to be worth $100 million dollars, Jakes says that it is occupational discrimination for him not to reap the benefits of the American dream. This dissertation identifies what has happened to the brand and Jakes’s ministry as “the Wal-Martization of African American Religion.” As a theoretical concept, Wal-Martization speaks to both the ideology and process that explains the generational differences between the New Black Church and the Black Church. It also is indicative of the branding and storytelling at every level of representation of the New Black Church. Jakes and New Black Church pastors are successful because they blur the lines between sacred and secular when they combine their vocations of pastor and entrepreneur. In this dissertation, I propose a cultural studies approach and a two-fold theological method for scholars to study these popular preachers. The method combines James McClendon’s Biography as Theology and Paul Tillich’s definitions of theology and theological norm from Systematic Theology. The method is a collaborative effort between the academic theologian and preacher. The scholar uses Biography as Theology to study the preacher (Jakes), and the second part of the method, Brand as Theology and Theological Norm, is where the scholar uses qualitative research methods to study the brand (WTAL). I define theologies of prosperity as contextual theologies of empire on a continuum that affirm it is God’s will and a believer’s right to obtain health and wealth by using Scripture and rituals like seed-faith giving and positive confession. Because these popular preachers offer adherents existential explanations for suffering (health and wealth), and prescriptions for liberation, I describe theologies of prosperity as theodicy and contemporary liberation theology. However, unlike traditional liberation theologies, these theologies do not have a preferential option for the poor. Instead, Jakes and other New Black Church pastors only offer adherents a pseudo-liberation. In essence, the stories of liberation that Bishop Jakes tells in his brands do not actually empower women, ideologically these stories only encourage women to stay loyal to his brand, become covenant ministry partners, and to buy more products. Jakes and New Black Church pastors are from the Second Gilded Age, they encourage women to pursue individual success within an oppressive system. Similar to Russell Conwell and other celebrity clerics from the First Gilded Age, Jakes and these pastors inadvertently blame the victims for their poverty and for not reaping the benefits of the American Dream, which according to prosperity preachers is available to all.
