Beginning in 1897, the American ceramics industry entered a period of stability and collaboration that emerged from an agreement by several leading firms to fix prices and discounts, exchange cost and price information, and begin close contractual relations with its workers' union, the National Brotherhood of Operative Potters. One issue, however, remained trouble-some: how to deal with occupational health issues in this disease-ridden trade. Should firms rely on state or private inspection? Should they be bound to one standard? Significantly, the companies and unions opted for private inspect

The attitudes of the ancient Greeks towards their material culture—so far as we can discover from their writings—was rather different from that of most modern students of the remains of classical antiquity. The Greeks esteemed gold and silver vessels, while many archaeologists still believe that they preferred painted pottery. This reversal of classical values came about through the entry of Utopian ideals into the mainstream of classical scholarship in the 18th century. Laudable in themselves, these ideals have led to a serious misunderstanding of the role of ceramic in antiquity. Prices for

This chapter deals with the short-lived post-war boom, and its aftermath. Surviving factory documents record the continuing (and growing) demand for Moorcroft’s ware, long after other manufacturers struggled to stay afloat. Contemporary correspondence and reviews reveal his enterprise and sense of purpose. At a time of economic slowdown and widespread retrenchment, Moorcroft expanded his facilities, building kilns for both flambé and lustre ware, and defiantly maintaining production through the miners’ strikes of 1920 and 1921, firing his ovens with wood. The Wall Street Crash of October 1929 caused havoc in the industry as a whole. Moorcroft’s trading figures declined progressively, and he was obliged, for the first time, to sell pieces at reduced prices. Significantly, even as he began to struggle commercially, his reputation as a designer continued to grow. He responded defiantly to the bleak economic climate with a series of new desi

Fission-track dating, one of the more recent techniques involving the use of radioactivity, has developed one of the widest ranges of applications. Dates of objects have been obtained ranging from 6 months to 109 years BP. Volcanic tephra, obsidian, man-made and basaltic glass, meteorites, and mica have been dated. A more apt term is nuclear-track dating because fissionable elements do not have to be present in the material. Fission, which produces one form of nuclear track, is a rare mode of radioactive decay. A more common decay is alpha decay, which produces a different type of track. Urani

In the Mаeotian burial grounds on the right bank of the Kuban river, several kantharoi of the Hellenistic series are known. The origin of these kantharoi is related with different production centers. Three forms distinguish among them: rounded-biconical (S-shaped), with an “angular” profile and with a neck sharply separated from the body. The first form includes 3 pieces (nos. 1–3), ornamented in the West Slope style with the so-called “spearhead necklace”. The earliest of them is kantharos no. 1. In terms of proportions, it can be attributed to the second quarter – the middle of the 3rd cent.
