Abstract:

Abstract:
This article analyses the intertextuality of the novel Volkswagen Blues by Jacques Poulin, a French-Canadian take on the road novel. The aim of the paper is to examine not only the relationships between Volkswagen Blues and its culturally diverse sources, but also to show how those multicultural intertexts permeate the road novel genre. In order to achieve this purpose, the study identifies in the novel instances of intertextuality which are analyzed within Genette’s framework for transtextuality. Considering the intertextual presence in Volkswagen Blues, the analysis ponders whether it is limited to this novel or is a manifestation of Americanness and, thus, a piece of evidence of multiculturality in the hegemonic American discourse. The study shows how Poulin depicts the crucial role of non-Anglo-American identities in contemporary American culture and explains the influence of world literatures in Poulin’s work

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis offers a critical study of Gabrielle Roy's presence in Jacques Poulin's works. Roy is a character, a reference and an inspiration; her books and her brilliant green eyes enthral Poulin and his protagonists. She is present through intertextual references---the mention of her name, her books, her characters or her quotes---but also, in a more abstract sense, through influence. In order to study the relationship between the two authors, a set of themes common to their literary works are analysed: their North-American identity (americanite), and their ambiguous treatment of sexuality.

Abstract:

Abstract:
On examining novels written in Quebec after the 1950s, surprisingly some common themes emerge. One finds progressively increasing references to the themes of the book, the library, and the author. In this thesis, we study the fictional work of Gerard Bessette and Jacques Poulin, two authors who make abundant references to the universe of the book. Their characters read, write, work and even live in libraries and bookshops.
We will discuss the concept of the library, in order to clarify various key issues. Our definition of the library will include any place where books are read or stored. In other words, we do not intend to limit our study only to the traditional library, but rather to extend it to any place which shelters books. The concept of the library is thus taken in its broadest definition and includes the bookshop, the office, or even the bus.
These books were selected because each author gives an account of contemporary Quebec history. In addition, the opposing themes in these fictitious worlds, seem to be at the core of the concept of the library. Indeed, it is at the same time both closedness and openness, both hoarding and lending. We will examine how the paradoxical realities are presented in these novels.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the model(s) of reading proposed by J. Poulin's novels. On the one hand, a phenomenological analysis enables us to observe textual strategies, such as intertextuality and photographs, which guide the empirical Reader through his readings. On the other hand, the representation of fictional Readers' act of reading, another textual strategy, is also analyzed.
As the phenomenological approach to the act of reading has not often been put into practice, our essay allows us to evaluate the reliability of different contemporary theories of the act of reading, particularly that of Iser in his The Act of Reading.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the intratextual literary symbols of Jacques Poulin's writings, and illustrates the autorepresentative characteristic of his production. Inspired by the three levels for the analysis of autorepresentation established by Janet M. Paterson, this essay demonstrates how Poulin's writings do, in fact, compose a system.
The author's choice to stage a character writer experiencing difficulties in his creative effort, is representative in itself: Poulin obviously wished to attract the reader's attention to the literary discourse of his writings. The concrete circumstances of the act of creation are therefore revealed by the fictitious writer. This essay suggests that the presence of auctorial figures complexify the text and generate a theory of the act of writing inherent to Poulin's works. If it shows how the author's discourse corresponds to an autotheorisation of the act of writing, it also shows how the reader's discourse works as instruction. The fictitious reader, by revealing his conception of the act of reading, indicates how Poulin's novel's should be read.
Finally, this essay suggests that Poulin's production is not only filled with literary references, but also with numerous references to itself. This network of autoreferences implies that Poulin's writing must be considered and studied as a whole.

Abstract:
Modular construction technology is one of the main technical features of AP1000. But after the construction practices of two self-reliance supporting projects, we found that concrete poured in the module is extremely difficult, the advantages of shorter construction duration in modular construction will be seriously weakened, so we designed three different pouring methods: layered pouring method, layered continuous pouring method and loop continuous pouring method. Deep comparative analysis on the principle, characteristic and implementation effect of these three pouring methods are studied in this paper.

Abstract:
Core melt solidification phenomena during external reactor vessel cooling is investigated in LIVE tests with different external cooling conditions and melt pouring positions. A non-eutectic simulant melt (80-20 mole% KNO3-NaNO3) is used in the LIVE tests. It is found out that when the vessel is cooled with water at the beginning of the melt pouring, the cooling is more effective than in the case of delayed water cooling condition, in which the vessel is first cooled with air and then flooded by water. The initial water cooling leads to a faster growth of crust layer, lower crust thermal conductivity and thinner crust layer than those under the delayed water cooling condition. The initial water cooling leads also to higher heat flux through the vessel wall during the steady state and shorter crust growth period in comparison with the delayed water cooling condition. The solidification of the melt is probably under supercooling condition. The pouring position near the vessel wall results in considerable asymmetric heat flux distribution at one latitude. The heat flux at the position of melt pouring is higher than the one at other locations.

Abstract:
The French composer Francis Poulenc had a profound admiration and empathy for the writings of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. That empathy was rooted in shared aspects of the artistic temperament of the two figures but was also undoubtedly reinforced by Poulenc’s fellow-feeling on a human level. As someone who wrestled with his own homosexuality and who kept his orientation and his relationships apart from his public persona, Poulenc would have felt an instinctive affinity for a figure who endured similar internal conflicts but who, especially in his later life and poetry, was more open about his sexuality. Lorca paid a heavy price for this refusal to dissimulate; his arrest in August 1936 and his assassination the following day, probably by Nationalist militia, was accompanied by taunts from his killers about his sexuality. Everything about the Spanish poet’s life, his artistic affinities, his personal predilections and even the relationship between these and his death made him someone to whom Poulenc would be naturally drawn and whose untimely demise he would feel keenly and might wish to commemorate musically. Starting with the death of both his parents while he was still in his teens, reinforced by the sudden loss in 1930 of an especially close friend, confidante and kindred spirit, and continuing throughout the remainder of his life with the periodic loss of close friends, companions and fellow-artists, Poulenc’s life was marked by a succession of bereavements. Significantly, many of the dedications that head up his compositions are ‘to the memory of’ the individual named. As Poulenc grew older, and the list of those whom he had outlived lengthened inexorably, his natural tendency towards the nostalgic and the elegiac fused with a growing sense of what might be termed a ‘survivor’s anguish’, part of which he sublimated into his musical works. It should therefore come as no surprise that, during the 1940s, and in fulfilment of a desire that he had felt since the poet’s death, he should turn to Lorca for inspiration and, in the process, attempt his own act of homage in two separate works: the Violin Sonata and the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’. This exposition attempts to unfold aspects of the two men’s aesthetic pre-occupations and to show how the parallels uncovered cast reciprocal light upon their respective approaches to the creative process. It also examines the network of enfolded associations, musical and autobiographical, which link Poulenc’s two compositions commemorating Lorca, not only to one another but also to a wider circle of the composer’s works, especially his cycle setting poems of Guillaume Apollinaire: ‘Calligrammes’. Composed a year after the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’, this intricately wrought collection of seven mélodies, which Poulenc saw as the culmination of an intensive phase in his activity in this genre, revisits some of ‘unheard voices’ and ‘unseen shadows’ enfolded in its predecessor. It may be viewed, in part, as an attempt to bring to fuller resolution the veiled but keenly-felt anguish invoked by these paradoxical properties.
