The objective of this research was to design an alternative wastewater treatment system for turkey processing plants to recover energy and reduce N and P to allowable discharge levels. The objective included: 1. Determine the quantity and quality of biogas produced from the turkey processing wastewater (TPW) and COD reduction efficiency. 2. Design a waste treatment system and validate proof of concept for simultaneous P and N removal with a goal of attaining effluent concentrations of 0.1 mg/L and 4 mg/L, for P and N, respectively.
The Australian chicken industry produces significant amounts of waste. The meat chicken industry alone produces about 1 million tonnes of poultry litter, with high levels of manure and wastes (mortalities and eggs) generated annually by the egg chicken industry. Poultry producers face increasing social and regulatory pressure for waste management but are limited by economically viable and sustainable waste management options. Therefore, management and disposal of poultry waste has increasingly become a major cost for industry. The conventional methods of poultry waste management are windrow

MSCAGR (Soil Science)
Department of Soil Science
Poultry manure (PM) is an inexpensive source of fertilizer but it decomposes quickly and releases carbon and greenhouse gases. Biochar (BC) could be an alternative source of carbon to improve soil quality and reduce greenhouse gas emission. This study investigated the effect of co-application of BC and PM on selected soil physical and chemical properties and performance of maize. A field experiment was conducted at the University of Venda experimental farm during 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons. The experiment was a 4 x 3 factorial arrange
