Full textThe paper industry generates a lot of sludges (around 6 million tonnes/year in Western Europe)which contain about 60% of dry matter mainly composed of cellulose fibres, kailinite and calcite. The present study deals with an original way of valorisation of such wastes : the production of metakaolin by calcining paper sludge in the temperature range of 700°C to 800°C. After calcination, pastes containing 50% calcium hydroxide and 50% brunt sludge are hydrated and the lime consumption investigated by DTA. The results obtained show that a very reactive pozzolan is produced by calcining paper slugde at 700 or 750°C for 2 or 5 hrs. Despite of a smaller kaolinite content, the burnt paper sludge exhibits more pozzolanic activity than commercially available matakaolins, specially at early ages. Thermodesorption analyses show that this higher activity is due to the presence of superficial defects which occur during the sludge calcination. The study carried out on 14 sludges also points out that the main factors affecting the reactivity of calcined sludge are the kaolinite, the quantity of calcite which decarbonates during calcination and the superficial defects. Particle size distribution and specific surface area have slight influence

Full textThis study concerns building materials engineering and Cameroon's natural resources. The use of pozzolans allows to elaborate light concretes both thermal insulating and strong. The study of this new material, about a few point of view (chemical, mineralogical, physical, reactivity with lime, potential reactivity with alkalis) shows that, depending) on whether the deposits, some aggregates are better to be used as an admixture for cement after a mechanical treatment and another ones as ordinary aggregates in elaboration of concrete. The aggregates of natural pozzolans are porous, so the classical theory of concrete composition can't be used. A method based on vacuum factor with a triangular diagram of mixture fillers, sand, aggregates, allows to optimize the formulation in getting building material according to the three set tests, lightness, mechanical strength and thermal insulation

Full textThe use of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) as a substitute for clinker is a well-known technology that can reduce the environmental cost of cement. Among the SCMs widely used today are fly ash, blast furnace slag and glass powder. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of calcined clays as SCMs, particularly due to their high reactivity and availability. This thesis project focuses on the use of calcined clays and marlstones as supplementary cementitious materials. The main aim is to identify new materials that could be of interest for use as SCMs. To this end, a multi-scale macro/micro approach is used to study the calcination, pozzolanic reactivity and performance in cementitious systems of these new materials. It was possible to demonstrate that marlstones (despite their complex mineralogical composition) have the potential to be used as supplementary cementitious materials after calcination, even with a low proportion of clays. Subsequently, it was shown that palygorskite is a high potential clay for use as a supplementary cementitious material after calcination, and can be considered as a viable alternative to metakaolin. The extensive study of the use of calcined palygorskites as SCMs has also provided new fundamental insights into the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the calcination of this type of material

Full textModern concerns lead us to maintain and expand our communication routes while preserving natural resources. In this context, the use of hydraulic road binders (HRB) during excavation works allows the use of in place materials having initially poor geotechnical properties. This thesis work deals with the valorization of a wastepaper sludge ash (WSA), industrial by-product from recycled paper, and a natural pozzolan as key components of new HRB. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of these materials was carried out. Their reactivity with lime and gypsum was evaluated using a new chemical test method developed to assist the HRB design. If this method remains to be optimized, it allows the design of HRB using pozzolan or WSA without clinker. Finally, the performance of HRB, formulated by the developed chemical test method or with a part of CEM I, were characterized on mortars and treatment of two clay soils. An environmental assessment of a binder containing a majority of WSA finishes the study

Full text[The aim of this study is ta show the possibility of manufacturing low-cost cement in Indonesia. To realize this objective, it is possible to use abundant laterites and a middle temperature thermal process (800°C) which is less expansive in energy than the Portland Cement production. The use of physical-chemical techniques (X-ray diffraction - differential thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry) and the study of mechanical strengths on mini-cylinders show the kaolinite content of the laterite is the main factor affecting its reactivity after burning. The strengths reached by mixtures of Portland Cement and burnt laterite are high and the durability of such binders is good because the lime content is lower. Concretes built up with these binders present interesting characterise in view of a low-cost housing in Indonesia. ]
