Full textThe paper industry generates a lot of sludges (around 6 million tonnes/year in Western Europe)which contain about 60% of dry matter mainly composed of cellulose fibres, kailinite and calcite. The present study deals with an original way of valorisation of such wastes : the production of metakaolin by calcining paper sludge in the temperature range of 700°C to 800°C. After calcination, pastes containing 50% calcium hydroxide and 50% brunt sludge are hydrated and the lime consumption investigated by DTA. The results obtained show that a very reactive pozzolan is produced by calcining paper slugde at 700 or 750°C for 2 or 5 hrs. Despite of a smaller kaolinite content, the burnt paper sludge exhibits more pozzolanic activity than commercially available matakaolins, specially at early ages. Thermodesorption analyses show that this higher activity is due to the presence of superficial defects which occur during the sludge calcination. The study carried out on 14 sludges also points out that the main factors affecting the reactivity of calcined sludge are the kaolinite, the quantity of calcite which decarbonates during calcination and the superficial defects. Particle size distribution and specific surface area have slight influence

Full textThis study concerns building materials engineering and Cameroon's natural resources. The use of pozzolans allows to elaborate light concretes both thermal insulating and strong. The study of this new material, about a few point of view (chemical, mineralogical, physical, reactivity with lime, potential reactivity with alkalis) shows that, depending) on whether the deposits, some aggregates are better to be used as an admixture for cement after a mechanical treatment and another ones as ordinary aggregates in elaboration of concrete. The aggregates of natural pozzolans are porous, so the classical theory of concrete composition can't be used. A method based on vacuum factor with a triangular diagram of mixture fillers, sand, aggregates, allows to optimize the formulation in getting building material according to the three set tests, lightness, mechanical strength and thermal insulation

Full textThe use of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) as a substitute for clinker is a well-known technology that can reduce the environmental cost of cement. Among the SCMs widely used today are fly ash, blast furnace slag and glass powder. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of calcined clays as SCMs, particularly due to their high reactivity and availability. This thesis project focuses on the use of calcined clays and marlstones as supplementary cementitious materials. The main aim is to identify new materials that could be of interest for use as SCMs. To this end, a multi-scale macro/micro approach is used to study the calcination, pozzolanic reactivity and performance in cementitious systems of these new materials. It was possible to demonstrate that marlstones (despite their complex mineralogical composition) have the potential to be used as supplementary cementitious materials after calcination, even with a low proportion of clays. Subsequently, it was shown that palygorskite is a high potential clay for use as a supplementary cementitious material after calcination, and can be considered as a viable alternative to metakaolin. The extensive study of the use of calcined palygorskites as SCMs has also provided new fundamental insights into the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the calcination of this type of material

Full textModern concerns lead us to maintain and expand our communication routes while preserving natural resources. In this context, the use of hydraulic road binders (HRB) during excavation works allows the use of in place materials having initially poor geotechnical properties. This thesis work deals with the valorization of a wastepaper sludge ash (WSA), industrial by-product from recycled paper, and a natural pozzolan as key components of new HRB. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of these materials was carried out. Their reactivity with lime and gypsum was evaluated using a new chemical test method developed to assist the HRB design. If this method remains to be optimized, it allows the design of HRB using pozzolan or WSA without clinker. Finally, the performance of HRB, formulated by the developed chemical test method or with a part of CEM I, were characterized on mortars and treatment of two clay soils. An environmental assessment of a binder containing a majority of WSA finishes the study

Full text[The aim of this study is ta show the possibility of manufacturing low-cost cement in Indonesia. To realize this objective, it is possible to use abundant laterites and a middle temperature thermal process (800°C) which is less expansive in energy than the Portland Cement production. The use of physical-chemical techniques (X-ray diffraction - differential thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry) and the study of mechanical strengths on mini-cylinders show the kaolinite content of the laterite is the main factor affecting its reactivity after burning. The strengths reached by mixtures of Portland Cement and burnt laterite are high and the durability of such binders is good because the lime content is lower. Concretes built up with these binders present interesting characterise in view of a low-cost housing in Indonesia. ]

Full text[The decreased availability of industrial by-products usually employed for elaboration of pozzolanic binders led us to consider the development of metakaolin by thermal activation of kaolin clays at intermediate temperatures (600-800°c). When metakaolin is mixed with Portland cement,it is possible to get high quality hydraulic fasts. Optimisation of such compounds involves the study of their micro-structure and specially of their porosity. Indeed, porosity and pore size distribution are parameters which affect some of the basic properties of concrete such as strength, permeability and durability. Transformations in porous structures of blended fasts which tend to form a discontinuous network have been demonstrated. ]

Full textThis work is a contribution to the general study of the silting consequences of dams in Algeria. With an optic of durable development we begin with the presentation of the sedimentation phenomena and the studied site. After that we present the study of sediment properties before our proposals for their valorisation in BTP. The constructions of water storage are very importants for the population needs, in the regions depending on an agricole and a breeding economy and whose climatic conditions make impossible to exploite grounds without using an adequate system of irrigation. Our research concerns the possibilities of recovering the useful volumes of dams storage lost by silting. The dam of Fergoug located at the north-west of Algeria was in a recent past, the source of wealth for the town of Perregaux, but it was and remains the theatre of the erosion consequences. The first experiment of dredging with a sucker dredger in Algerie was made on this dam. From 1986 to 1989, 10 million m3 of mud were extracted and deposited downstream in coarsely arranged zones. The mud is involved again by erosion to oued la Macta. Since the dredging operations were necessary, it was also necessary for the assumption of responsibility of the repercussions for the rejection and storage of the dredged matters. The study of the valorization of the dredging sediments offers many ways being able to be exploited. The mud in a solid state, taken in the zone of rejection on Oued El Hammam in the area of Macta, stabilized with cement under particular conditions of temperature, moisture and pressure, gave compressive strengths comparable with those of sandlime brick. We present in this study the mode of activation, having led to the performances measured in experiments. In addition, the Algerian cement factories use, for the production of cement made up of type CEM II of raised class, a natural pozzolana. Our study brought us to the design of an artificial pozzolana by heat treatment of the argillaceous fraction of the muds resulting from the dam of Fergoug. Micro-tubes-test of hardened paste manufactured and tested in uniaxial pressing in order to consider of their pozzolanic reactivity. These results are compared with those obtained with the natural pozzolana of Beni-Saf, under the same experimental conditions

Full textThe use of locally available resources is a major concern for construction sector when it comes to sustainable development. In the case of concrete, a variety of by-products is currently being investigated for use as cementitious materials so as to develop concrete made out of alternatives resources. The present study intends to assess the performance of four kinds of by-products on corrosion-related properties in reinforced concrete. Glass powder, paper mill fly ashes, sewage sludge ashes or calcined sediments exhibit a mineral nature compatible with the medium of concrete. In terms of corrosion concerns, the concrete act as an alkaline medium that enable steel passivity and as a transport barrier that limits deleterious elements ingress (mainly chlorides, carbon dioxide). Thus, the use of alternative cementitious materials should enable the passivation of steel and should also provide a densification to the cover in order to limit contaminants ingress toward steel vicinity. The electrochemical properties of steel in contact with cementitious additions were characterized and the transfer properties of concrete were investigated. The use of these materials has an insignificant impact on the behavior of steel. However, the concrete cover has significant influence on both chloride and carbon dioxide ingress as well as on the corrosion kinetic of reinforcement. The reactivity of the cementitious materials impacts the transfer properties which control the kinetic of contamination of concretes and the corrosion process of non-passive steel

Full textAbstractBecause of the specificities of self-compacting concrete (SCC), especially regarding their high volume paste content and the presence of large amounts of mineral admixtures and substitutes, the behavior in fresh and hardened state and the durability of these concretes are strongly influenced by these two parameters. Some treated sediments acquire pozzolanic properties and can be used as additions orsubstitutes to the cement. This possibility makes of concrete technology a privileged way of enhancement. The present study aims to contribute to the enhancement of the treated mud of Chorfa and Fergoug dam (situated in west of Algeria) as a mineral partial substitute for CPA CEMI 42.5 cement in the composition of an economic and preferment mortars and self-compacting concretes. The aim is to compare the influence of the incorporation of this calcined mud to the natural pozzolana of Beni Saf (situated, also in west of Algeria) in (SCC) on their physical, mechanical behavior and their durability of these concretes in short, medium and long term. The study was conducted on four SCCs, the first based on 20% natural pozzolana Beni Saf (SCC-PZ), the second based on 20% of the calcined mud of Fergoug dam (SCC-VF) and of Chorfa dam (SCC-VC) and a control SCC without additions to the need for comparison .Apart from the economic interest of the SCCs based on calcined mud, our study showed that these concretes have comparable performances to that obtained on SCC based on natural pozzolana (SCC-PZ).In fact, concerning compressive strengths, our study indicate that the SCC with calcined mud ((SCC-VC) and (SCC-VF)) present the best results especially at long termThe results of the different following tests: the acid attack (HCl and H2SO4), carbonation and sulphate attack (Na2SO4 and MgSO4) show that the calcined mud has an influence roughly better than the natural pozzolana on the physic - mechanical behavior and durability of the SCC which it is incorporated.Key words: Dam of Chorfa – Dam of Fergoug – Calcined mud – Pozzolana – SCCcontaining mud - SCC containing pozzolana – Mechanical strength –Durability

Full textThe Ph.D. work, presented in this manuscript, is devoted to evaluating phosphate adsorption process on carbonate ferric green rust and ferrihydrite. The main objective concerns an application for the treatment of waste water in rural areas. Both iron oxides are first synthesized and their physico-chemical properties characterized. The ferric green rust structural properties differences as a function of synthesis parameters such as aging period and addition of hydrogen peroxide solution is of particular interest. A detailed study of surface physico-chemical properties by X Photoelectron Spectroscopy is carried out in the case of ferrihydrite. The reactivity of these two iron oxides is then evaluated in batch experiments. Adsorption process follows the pseudo-second order kinetic equation and Freundlich isotherm model which give the best adjustments of experimental data. The influence of various parameters such as pH, ionic strength, etc on phosphate adsorption is also taken into account. Column experiments are afterwards carried out by using filtration material constituted of iron oxide deposited onto pozzolana. The optimal conditions to prepare this filtration material are naturally predetermined. Phosphate adsorption in hydrodynamic mode is characterized by advective and diffusive mechanisms and water regionalization which govern the adsorption process in the column. Moreover, phosphate adsorption capacity and flow rate influence on adsorption process are obtained. Finally, a preliminary experiment on a pre-treated waste water finally shows that the filtration material is potentially interesting for an industrial application

Full textThe incorporation of crop wastes or natural materials in the cement matrix confers interesting properties to composites prepared. The aim of this thesis is to develop a material that can reach the mechanical, thermal and durability requirements for building materials in the humid tropical zone. Firstly, pozzolanic activity of a natural pozzolan, bamboo stem and sugar cane bagasse ashes has been determined. Influence of their incorporation on mechanical properties and durability of mortars exposed to chloride and sulphate ions was studied. Secondly, influence of addition of bagasse fibers on thermal and mechanical properties of composites was studied as a function of various parameters (fibers content, curing, type of cement matrix). These results has shown that the materials studied have pozzolanic activity and it is possible to incorporate them into the cement to fight against corrosion. Moreover, composites elaborated with bagasse fibers are more insulating than those elaborated without fibers. However, from the viewpoint of mechanical properties, incorporation of bagasse fibers decreases flexural strength of composites in the present work and under the conditions producing procedures that were adopted
